This is by far the best Authentic Mexican food I have ever had. We spend two nights in Capital Reef and ate here both nights. We didn't even discuss another place the second night. My only wish is that it wasn't 3 hours away. But then again, I would go broke!! read more

From the outside, this restaurant doesn't give a clue to the delicious food inside. Lucky for us, we were hungry and Chak Balam was open. We shared enchiladas, an octopus taco (Wow!) and flan for desert. On our return trip (to Salt Lake City), we tried another restaurant that wasn't even able to deliver a hot chai latte. The exterior may look less than unassuming, but if you're looking for good Mexican in the Capitol Reef area don't pass this place by. The interior was very small (it looked like some work was being done to add space) but was clean. Although there was only one waiter service was speedy. Stopped here on my way from Moab to capitol reef. There are not many options and even if there were a million I would probably stop here every time! This place is SOOOOO good. Unfortunately, our group had a poor experience. We had to flag down servers to get just about anything. Our food was nearly inedible. We let the server know our meat tasted as if something might be wrong with it, but they responded with we were probably expecting Taco Bell style food. We happened upon this little gem 30 minutes before closing last week when arriving in Torrey the night before doing Capitol Reef National Park. The building was small, but the service was excellent and the food was amazing. The restaurant is newly opened (The owner came out and talked with us for a while and shared his journey with us). It had only been open three weeks when we were there. You never would've known it was that new based on our experience. The salsa was fresh and very tasty, the queso was amazing and creamy, chips were hot, and all three of us loved our food. I had the chimichanga, a friend had tortilla soup, and another friend had the flautas. Portions were generous and the owner was open to suggestions. We got there right before they closed and thought we might have to wait quite a while for our food, but it was fast and hot and our server was ready with lots of suggestions. We were never rushed and were treated as valuable and appreciated customers. Definitely give this family-run restaurant a try when in Torrey. You will not be disappointed. Our jeep guide recommended Chak Balam. Most other places were closed anyway. The place is nothing to look at. It looks like a construction shed, actually, but don't let that fool you. The service was friendly and fast and the food was outstanding. Everything was obviously homemade, including the red sauce and mole. The mole was PERFECT. Nothing was greasy. Ingredients and meals were fresh and authentic. The beverage options were fun, including Mexican sodas, horchata, and Mexican hot chocolate, which was excellent on a cold day. This little place was recommended by a local- my mom thought it was the best Mexican food she's ever had. The outside is a little shabby, but it was spectacular food. The presentation was beautiful, huge menu, very fresh ingredients. All the servers were delightful, and the service was so quick. Fresh baked chips and homemade salsa for a free appetizer! We are outside and the views of the park are amazing. Whole dinner came to only $32 including tip for 3 items!!! read more

Overall just not a good experience. I think this restaurant has a management/leadership problem. I don't blame the wait staff. It was obvious they haven't been given good coaching and training. Ambience is stressful, crowded, unhappy customers because of inadequate service. I could overhear nearby tables complaining. Waitresses was a downer. Led with the single mom/kid at home story which is the story of many people I know, but they make the best of it and don't use it as leverage with their job. Food was just OK. If you're driving through Torrey Utah - this is a delicious and tasty find. Small. Cozy. Unpretentious with incredible Mexican food. The shrimp fajitas were generous- seasoned to perfection that puts expensive gourmet Mexican places to shame. Pricing is fair and choices in the menu are excellent. Service is excellent as this is a family business that really cares about each guest. Swing by and enjoy some great food. You won't find better anywhere. It's worth a detour if you're even close. My pork tamales with green sauce were better than any I ever had. My friend's cheese enchiladas were scrumptious. Large servings - enough for tomorrow's lunch. First off, the pin for this place is off. It's right on 24. This place in very small, but was really hopping the night we went in. We actually already ate dinner somewhere else, but came here mostly for desserts, which they were happy to accommodate. We did get chips and salsa (good) and queso dip (very good!) before desserts. They were out of two of the desserts, which made me sad, but we enjoyed a few others. Flautas was good (Apple cinnamon), and the flan was excellent! Nice firm but creamy texture. Does not look like much on the outside, but wow is it good!! We came for breakfast after finding out the original restaurant we were going to was not opened yet for the season. This place was GREAT. Mixed results. Limited staff meant that when three tables arrived at the same time ours got slow service. I wouldn't serve the enchiladas to anybody. The shrimp tacos and the salsa were very good. The fajitas looked good but didn't live up to the looks. They actually served a bowl of thin bean soup as an order of refried beans. The food is fresh and authentic, the staff is super friendly and most importantly, the food is delicious! Best meal we've had in our entire trip throughout Utah- hands down.
