    Alfredo oily reheated garbage

We are staying at the red sands hotel attached to the restaurant and are pleased with the hotel so we decided to try dinner at the restaurant. We started with cups and queso and were bummed it was store bought chips and canned stale unflavored cheese. Yuck. My husband ordered the chicken sandwich with rice. The rice was bland literally no flavor, although it's advertised as seasoned rice. It is far from seasoned. I had the wedge salad and although it was not a wedge (it was chopped) I thought it was very tasty and fresh. The kids split Alfredo and when the waitress set the plate in the table i was appalled. The sauce was separated and very oily. I am a cook and can tell this was a reheat and a very bad reheat at that! Totally gross. I expressed my dislike for the kids food and the waitress laughed me off instead of addressing the pile of oily mush she set in front of my kids... at least the bread was edible. The wine was 8 bucks a glass and i got a 1/4 cup of wine in my glass... lame. Lastly the side salad came after the entrees and the "fresh" onion was translucent as if previously frozen. Gross! We will be eating outside the hotel for the rest of our stay.

    Cheesy Tots

Had dinner here last night. It was really good! They were about to close and they were able to accommodate us. This was the only place that was open and we were very thankful. I'm not sure if it's because of covid or the season but all of the restaurants were closed by 8/9PM. We ordered the cheese tater tots. They were delicious. The cheese was on the inside and they came with ranch. We also ordered two orders of the Chicken Alfredo Pasta. It was perfect. The fetichismos and chicken were great, I would consider it Cajun style. The employee who was handing the front of the house and gave me my food was friendly. They also seemed to have a great draft beer selection but I can't comment on that because sadly there were closing so I couldn't try any. Next time for sure!

    Fresh jalapeño poppers. Yuuummmm

This was a real hidden gem for my friend and I when searching out dinner options after a long day of hiking, less than stellar lunch choices, and a later dinner in a super small town. We arrived around 8pm for dinner here and there were two other tables already dining but having received their entrees so the kitchen was not busy at all. We had already browsed the menu before arriving so had an idea of what we wanted and liked their local food sourcing, salad and healthy options. It looks like it's fairly new based upon photos and reviews and we could not have been happier with both the service and the food. Our server was very friendly and personable - I had a pineapple cream soda from their Stubborn soda brand and it was really very good. We also split the bacon-wrapped jalapeño poppers stuffed with cream cheese and drizzled with a sweet glaze. They were two large peppers wrapped in bacon and lightly air-fried. Made fresh to order. Out in less than 5 minutes and absolutely delicious. Just enough heat with some sweet. I could've eaten 5 of them easily. We both chose the quinoa and couscous salad. It was light, fresh, and filling! Lots of fresh items inside the salad and a house-made light dressing on top. Really delicious. We saw a dessert tray after dinner and it had lots of things I could've eaten but I was stuffed! We browsed their breakfast items and our server made some suggestions on her favorites as well and they had some great options and good coffee as well. If you are in the area and hungry - this is the place to be.

This is a room that isn't advertised in 3rd party sites and has to be booked on the property website only - it's something like 50% cheaper than the rooms in the hotel. The room comes with unlimited tea, coffee, and hot chocolate from the General Store/Cafe. We were a bit confused with how it worked since other customers have to pay for drinks, but the clerk assured us we could go whenever to get drinks (which we did multiple times!) While we checked in too late in the day to eat at the deli and left too early in the morning for Chuckwagon's famous lunch boxes, we did hit it up in the morning for breakfast pastries, which according to the cashier are all baked in house (and why we were attracted to them in the first place). We were having trouble deciding between the Kouign Amann and the Chocolate Croissant, eventually deciding on the former, but the cashier tossed us the latter for free! What great service! Chocolate Croissant (Complementary, normally $6) - This is a gorgeous looking croissant, golden brown with a drizzle of sweet chocolate on top, still soft and gooey thanks to being fresh from the oven. It's baked hard, so croissant shards fly everywhere while eating. I'd say it's baked a tad too long, so while extremely flaky, the interior isn't quite as chewy as I'd like. The lamination does look quite good from what I can tell after having some difficulty slicing through with a plastic knife. As is traditional, two chocolate batons are baked inside. (5/5) Kouign Amann w/ Cream ($6) - Again, this pastry has a really hard bake, so almost the entire thing shatters easily, except for the stellar caramelized sugar layer covering the bottom. It's hardened, sticky, and sweet with a great crunch factor. The interior is actually correct for a Kouign Amann, which is really surprising for a small-town bakery. It's not laminated nearly as much as the croissant, and instead seems to be a nice enriched brioche interior, albeit not particularly airy and soft in texture due to the bake. There's a really tangy and somewhat sweet cream cheese frosting that's piped into the center. I'd actually prefer the pastry without this extra flourish, but beggars can't be choosers! (5/5) Both pastries are more of a 4.5/5 due to the bake, but the ingredients and technique (other than bake) seem to be well thought out. We were not expecting much from these baked goods given that the Chuckwagon Deli isn't exactly a specialty bakery, but in the end we were extremely surprised by the quality. I'll definitely be revisiting if I'm ever in town again.

Guests of the motel gets free coffee, tea, or hot chocolate from the general store which is open early til late, 10pm I believe. We ate at the deli for breakfast. I was looking forward to the quiche based on what I saw on the Yelp pictures but I guess the menu has changed. They only offer breakfast sandwiches now but it's made to order so we got to choose type of eggs and proteins. It did take a bit a time for them to make it so factor that in when planning your visit. The sandwiches were ~$12 each but were pretty filling so perfect for another day of hiking.

It's located in Torrey- you can spot the gravel parking lot with lots of cars in front. In fact we actually didn't see the restaurant because there were 2 rows of cars parked in front-a good sign! The menu was varied- from pizza ( more about that later), steak, salads, sandwiches, trout, mexican food. Good selection of alcoholic drinks, beer and soft drinks and even ice cream floats. The meals came with a choice of salad or soup and choice of baked or mashed potato, fries or vegetables. I ordered the steak sandwich which was strips of steak with grilled vegetables -onions and peppers, cheese and a spread of guacamole. It was served on crusty ciabatta bread. I asked for no added salt on the steak and they graciously accommodated me. It was nicely seasoned and didn't need the extra salt. The meat was nice and tender. Hubby ordered the starter dish taco (2) and it had a large piece of battered fried fish. It was crispy and moist. It could be an entree! I saw other diners order the burger and it was thick and large. Another party ordered the large pizza- let me tell you it was huge-almost big as a lazy susan. It could easily feed four or more. And the price was so reasonable- $23 for the premium pizza and $22 for the others. Looking around, all the meals that came out were generously portioned. No wonder the place was full! In spite of the steady flow of customers, the staff was very friendly and helpful and came by to refill waters. We didn't have to wait too long for the food in spite of the busyness. For those wanting a good meal after a day in the park, come here!
