The fairways were nice. The greens were ok but areas around the greens were poorly maintained, especially the bunkers which were completely un maintained on most holes. Like seriously what golf course that is offering teatimes as early as 645 doesn't open their range until 8 AM?? So if you have an early teatime at this place paying $80-$100 a round you can't even hit a bucket of balls before your round.... The course is in excellent condition. Greens have filled in and are fairly firm and fast. Puts are rolling true with the exception of a few poorly cut cups that were pulled up. The tees and fairways are filled in and firm, no plugged balls. It should be in great shape for several weeks as long as they don't go crazy with the water, at least until the summer heat show up. read more

I saw the most horrific thing on this course. I honestly am horrified. My husband and I love this course because it's beautiful and fun to golf and local. But I will never ever go back. There was two babies and a mother deer out on the driving range and I went into the pro shop to ask them to send one of their boys out to shew them off the range and close to the range deck. The older gentleman told me no. I told him but people are almost hitting them and young high schoolers hitting balls we're just laughing and trying to aim for them. He said no. I told him that's absolutely inhumane and a lady told me that last week a baby was killed for the same reason. This is sickening to me. We had not hit one of our balls from our bucket and I told him I wanted a refund. He said he didn't know how to do that and if I wanted to stand behind all the other people then maybe he can see if he can. He was rude and absolutely a cold individual. Broke my heart to think people saw a baby deer killed last week on that range and I was trying to get help for a deer with two tiny babies so close to the range that the teens were hitting right at the' and barely making it past them and not one person working would do anything but laugh. I'm honestly sickened by the humans that work at this golf course. We have spent so much money golfing there and to think they are so cruel. These deer were not just on the golf course they were right on the range and close enough for people to barely miss or not miss. I'm just sad and heartbroken by this. And to think a gal said a baby was killed last week in the same manner. Could you image taking your kids to practice hitting balls and then seeing that. It's sickening. read more

Tough course but very fun, has fast greens with unpredictable break. Took me 3 hours to complete playing by myself and walking. Teeing off right at sunrise, there was no one on the golf course and it was very peaceful. Very hilly so unless you're in good shape and want a hike, take a cart, I enjoyed walking though. Our golf club recently played a Saturday round here as we were in the SLO area for the weekend. I've enjoyed playing courses in the foothills and love the topography in this type of area. It's a bit hilly so I was grateful we were riding. It's hilly enough to where Chalk Mountain still has gas powered carts! To me this is a type of course that you tend to improve upon each time out. With the handful of blind tee shots, course knowledge (and where to miss it) would have saved me a few shots. From what I'm hearing, the heavy rain season made the rough much more difficult than it was in the past. Still, if you're striking the ball well, you will have a good time. I love the value of Chalk Mountain however that might have contributed to the 5 hour round. I liked the grass driving range as well. I wouldn't mind coming back here next year. read more

Beautiful course. There USED TO BE a grass driving range that was beautiful at sunset and early morning. Peaceful, and a great place to practice irons. Well they just chopped off the top of the hill and put up a driving range complete with....you guessed it....BAD CANNED MUSIC, TVs, and hitting mats. No more hitting off the grass. No more gorgeous sunsets with birds and deer. Now it's concrete, mats, and the worst pipes in music you have ever heard. Nice move Chalk Mountain. read more

My partner and I golfed here for the first time on a Saturday. We had a tee time reserved for 8am. The first thing we noticed after exiting our vehicle in the parking lot was the strong odor of sewage. This was unmistakable, although we do underthere is almost nothing that can be done to remedy this long term, any treatment to the system would be temporary. We went to the proshop to pay and the pro was very helpful and nice. He gave us a key to a cart and we were shocked to realize the carts were gas carts. We don't know why this is the case and we are still baffled. We teed off after our name was called and realized the course was absolutely beautiful (mostly)! There are a lot of hills, challenging fairways, a combination of very fast and very slow greens. Being the novice golfers we are, we got quite the workout. The cart did not have the torque needed to trek through all of the areas we hit our balls. The fairways and many greens on the front nine were soaked with the tires often settlting a bit in to the fairways. There were a few holes which lacked the beauty of the rest of the course. Mostly on the back nine. The fairway of hole 10 rested betwen a huge (mostly dirt, hill and an OB area with trees, it was difficult to determine where the green was for hole 12, tee boxes at hole 13 are riddled with mosquitoes from nearby settling ponds, and the dead/ dirt area where the green of 13, entire hole 14, and tee boxes of 15 converge was an eyesore. Not to mention the on course toilets which were dirty and left a lot more to be desired. Nevertheless, this course was so much fun to play, if you've never played it before, bring bugspray and a ton of extra balls! I've never lost so many balls on a single course ever. I guess there's definitely room for improvement. read more

Overall, a really solid golf course. The family and I booked it for Thanksgiving. Beautiful scenery and a really challenging course with lies above and below your feet. Most areas are really well taken care of too. One hole, the drivable par 4 on the front 9, had a beater up fairway. However, who's laying up on a drivable par 4? I stopped and played this course on my way home from Monterey. I absolutely loved it. Lots of beautiful scenery, elevation changes on the course and it had tons of deer to keep you company. Amenities were right on par with the course. Carts, driving range club house with food options and even the new cart scooters. Just make sure you do your waiver ahead of possible. Had a really fun time golfing here. It wasn't too expensive to golf 9 holes with a cart. Personally I recommend getting a cart because its a pretty hilly course. There were lovely deer that would walk around the course and poop (small poops). There is a free parking lot for the course. The course could have been watered a little more. We almost got hit with a golf ball from another player who was doing the entire course so the holes should be more spread out to prevent that. Overall it was a good course and a fun day. read more

Driving into the parking lot gives you a pretty good idea of what you're in for. It's weed strewn and gravely and sorely in need of resurfacing. Glance over to the Pro Shop you'll note the lawn in front has long since gone to seed - it's now a barren stretch of dirt and weeds. That said, the driving range is acceptable, especially by SLO standards. As far as the course itself, well, let's just say that who ever designed it was having a really bad day. Teeing off on the first hole says it all. This is a par 5 who's fairway twists and turns downhill like a roller coaster gone amuck. Traditional course design calls for the first hole to be a playable par 4 with the aim of easing the golfer into the round. Not this place. There are a number of tortured holes like this one which make the course nearly unplayable at times. Finally the greens, ah the greens. There is rarely a flat spot to be found on any of them and the greens keepers try to avoid the few that exist when placing the pins. It's not unusual to have a putt break three ways in the span of 10 feet. On the day I played it, I noticed several groups of beginners on the course. Let me say this for the record. THIS IS NOT A BEGINNERS COURSE. Anyone trying to learn the game will be no doubt frustrated beyond words trying to do anything but survive these 18 holes. Even for mid to high handicappers, the best way to play this course is to bring a case of beer, plenty of golf balls, and not keep score. read more

The course is nice and difficult at some times and easy at others. All and all, good price, fun atmosphere and a central coast classic course. Course is in excellent condition with super smooth and semi-fast greens. People are super nice and helpful - there is still good customer service left in this great country of ours. You share the fairways with deer but their no problem at all. The value is fantastic!!!! Only complaint is that I live in Moorpark vs. Atascadero.....Damn!!!! read more

Played over Spring Break with my buddy Robert...actually the second course in our golf marathon. This golf course is a hidden gem. I had played this course many years ago and still receive emails from them. The course was in great shape. The fairways, bunkers, and green were awesome. The layout of the holes plus the scenery was beautiful. We had a 2:00pm tee which made our green fees plus cart equal $37/person. Overall, the place is wonderful. We are definitely going back. The only negative which was HUGE was the "JERK OFF" cashier/attendant in the club house. This guy needs customer service classes. When we walked in, the guy says "you guy wanna play?" DUH...that's why we're at the golf course... Then he proceeds to tell us that the high school team is on the number one tee box and that they're "really good" so we wouldn't be able to catch up to them. And he asks why we want to play so fast? Obviously, he doesn't know what Ready Golf is. At the end of the round, Robert and I both shot 79; we past the high school team after hole number 3, and had a great day...regardless of the that "Jerk-off" read more

Pretty much your standard municipal course. $13 for a 9-hole twilight is a steal nowadays. Facilities are small and outdated. Course is fairly well maintained, challenging enough for a single-digit handicapper, yet manageable for your weekend duffer (me). I'd say the signature hole is #13, in which your approach shot will be the equivalent of trying to hit a golf ball up to the top of the Sears Tower. Also, beware...if you play the back nine late in the day with the sun low, expect to have a lot of tee shots disappear into the sun...my last tee shot on #13 is still out there somewhere! read more

Such a cool place to golf. The fairways are a little worn & beaten up sure, but all the greens are in superb shape! You have a variety of lies to play & challenging par 5's & some tricky par 3's. very challenging golf. Not to mention the price to play 18 holes with a cart & club rental is under 50$ - a great deal. They have a great driving range which allows you to hit from the grass. They also have a great putting & chipping areas...Real great staff also,so nice & accommodating. I have played this course many times over the years, and it still offers challenges every time I go out. It's not a perfect course, but it's challenging, demands accuracy and good wedge play, and is well-maintained in an area that is still in a drought condition. Another value is the relatively low green and cart fees combined with a friendly staff and a good restaurant. This course is also scenic with lots of wildlife. If you enjoy a challenge at a reasonable price on a well-run course, this is it. read more

A tough course with no easy shots. Most of the time you are hitting up a hill, down a hill, on the side of a hill, behind a tree, or in the rough. Lots of deer hang out here, and the course is very scenic and pastoral. Par 3 greens are tough to master. Very nice friendly staff. read more

The layout is interesting but for me two factors detracted from enjoying this course. First, many of the holes have side-sloping fairways and therefore even a well-hit drive can end up in the rough or worse. Second, the grass is very tough (kikuyu?) and catches the club-head if the ball is not struck PERFECTLY. Related to this is the thick rough which tends to swallow up the ball and makes it difficult (and time-consuming) to find. Too bad, because this course is designed quite well and the fees are reasonable. read more

I'll keep an open mind with this course and give it a three, because maybe I caught it at a bad time of the year. All the grass (Except the greens, thankfully) was dead throughout the entire course. I was coming to this course with pretty high expectations that were far from met. Aside from that there were two holes that gave me real trouble, other than that the rest are pretty easy. A couple of par 5's can made on the green in two, and a couple par 4's can be made on in one. I'll try coming back in the spring... Hopefully it will be green next time. read more

I played chalk mountain a lot as a starving Cal Poly student in the early 2000s; had a few golfing buddies and with the student deals ($15 to walk), Chalk was a part of our regular rotation with Dairy Creek and Morro Bay. So last time we got together in Paso decided to relive our glory days and head to Atascadero again. Sadly, this course is just not what I remembered. First off, the weekend rate is now $39/person with $17/person cart fee (we're not in as good of shape as we used to be) for old as heck carts that literally struggle to make 3mph. Yesterday I paid $14 bucks for a GPS-equipped cart at a much nicer course! Secondly, the course is just not in very good shape anymore. A lot of the holes are gimmicks (on number 1 you have to hit a huge left to right drive to have any hope of holding the sharply sloping fairway and then there's a grove of trees in the middle of the fairway blocking your approach). I always feel the Bay Area is super expensive for golf, but I can play Golf-Digest rated courses in the Bay for less than Chalk. I still have lots of great memories of Chalk, but next time we're in the area we'll go back to Dairly Creek or Morro Bay and get a whole lot more bang for our buck. read more
