During an RV trip to Paso Robles, CA, we chose to have lunch at the restaurant at the Hunter Ranch Golf Course, so this review is more about the dining experience than the golfing. The course grounds, however, are spectacular, well cared for, and quite beautiful. Now for lunch: First class experience. The greeting was super friendly, and we were quickly seated at an outdoor table. Our server, Kyler, was superb, providing just the right about of attention. I had a bacon cheeseburger, and my wife had a club sandwich, both of which were quite large and exceptionally tasty. Overall service and quality were outstanding. Reasonable price. Good layout. Cart path is gravel or dirt in most places. Easy to get to. Pleasant staff.

The greens are excellent, but the tee boxes aren't maintained. On the practice green near the front enterance, the have removed the holes and on the upper practice green, there is only one hole to putt to so multiple golfers have to putt to the same hole. Either they don't care about the golfer's experience or they are too lazy to put more holes in. read more

Improving my rating of the course. Cost is still very high. The course has been in much better conditions this year. The grass is now going dormant for winter and may not be as visually appealing as it was earlier in the year. This is due to drought tolerant fairways. Practice greens (1-3) can get beat up pretty bad by people with poor golf etiquette. The range can be very busy at times. Still prefer this course over all the north county courses. Just be prepared to $$$. read more

This course could be a 5 star review however I hate that I have to leave a 2 star here. Last time I played here was back in high school golf about 23 years ago and from what I remembered then I actually looked forward to playing here. The drive from Bakersfield is exactly like driving down to LA except there is zero traffic here and back. We scheduled ahead of time to tee off first on a Friday in plans of playing 36 holes here. The course condition overall was a 3 out of 5 with most fairways having dead spots or over watered fungus in parts of fairways. Once you get off the fairway with a minimal space of rough grass it's pretty much non playable if you can even find the ball. 5 perfect drives down the middle of the fairway only to never finding those balls for whatever reason. The greens were in great condition except the fact that no one hardly fixes their ball marks here. I think I averaged 4 repairs every green I went on including the second round. Most bunkers from the looks of it were good and the one I played out of was not bad but could have used a deeper rake on the machine which seemed to be compacted from the heavy watering due to summer months I would assume. The drinks at the bar were on pint especially the bloody Mary's and the cart girl was always able to be found about every 6 holes. However the cost overall here is what factored this two star. The condition of the course overall, and lack of maintenance outside of the fairways including fairways minus the greens really doesn't deserve a $115 round as a non resident. The replay fee of $55 was definitely not worth the actual initial price for a round here. This place would be better suited as 4 star if they could drop there price at $45-$55 a round. Two players with a cart at La Purisma which is 10 fold this course is is only $50 a player right now. Most courses twice as good as here in LA only charge $55-$75 a round. I definitely would not play here again unless they cut their rates well below the 50% mark off what they charge now. read more

I love this course. The views are amazing with excellent golfing conditions. The bar staff was super friendly and the food was really good to top it all off. The Good = the clubhouse and the pro shop and the tables for eating in between. Amazing Tri Tip sandwiches. 5 star experience. Great sand traps w lots of sand and fast true greens. Motorcycle golf cart options I believe. The trees on the course are beautiful but unfair. The Bad: Gimmicky! Unfair! Poor Course upkeep! this course is stupidly unfair I shot a 95 and anywhere else that is a 90. Fact. Also if you hit just a smidge left and right see ya! Down a hill of dirt. Idiotic slopes. On top of all that it's a course that can charge $90 but because of the terrible condition of the course it's not worth more then $50 read more

The negative reviews don't lie! The tee boxes, fairways and car paths (dirt with potholes) are in the worst condition I've ever seen. Muni courses are better kept. For the money this is completely over priced! The only reason I didn't give it one star was because of the setting. I did not play well but it was enjoyable. Hard to be objective when you only play once/twice a year. I have played La Purisma in Buelton, designed by same person (Sandpiper, in Goleta too.). The clubhouse and cafe staff deserves an applause, very friendly/good vibes. read more

When the fairways are dead, and you hit good drives that land in dead fairways, that's really not worth paying an arm and a leg to play here. Some of the tee boxes were awful. Lower your rate. Outrageous green fees. The driving range is trash. Nothing like warming up before a round hitting off of dirt. read more

This is a nice course. Two very different nines. In fact, it could be considered two different courses they are so opposite of one-another. The course is well maintained and has a great, challenging layout. I liked the course very much. What I wasn't thrilled with: The price, they ask over $100. I'm from Southern California, we have comparable courses all over the place from $40-$75. So the price was a bit steep. The club house staff...stuffy and condescending. In addition, at the turn, I ordered a hamburger, hot dog, and fries....$22. Also a bit pricey, and not all that great. I am not familiar with the area at all, so there may not be other options, which would explain the high greens fees, the not-so-friendly staff, and the expensive junk food. Next time, I will try the links course across the highway so that I have some comparison. read more

Pretty poor experience from beginning to end. Came to golf a new course from Texas, the appeal here was they had the golf scooters which we have in Texas and I enjoy them because the pace of play is improved and you can stay in your groove if you're a momentum player like I am. First, we paid and had to wait a while for them to be rode up to us which didn't give us much time to warm up. Then the scooters came and one of them had a broken off break lever and the kickstand didn't have a foot knob like they should. Pace of play was brutally slow - even with the scooters. Third hole my scooter completely died - I had to call the pro shop and get a normal cart because they ran out of the scooters. Next hole my buddies scooter completely died. We asked if we could just get a rain check for the final 9 for the next day. The smug middle aged man in the pro shop staff denied the request saying it was out of their control. B/S. For the price you can do much better. Would not recommend. read more

The golf course is challenging and good but the staff is lazy and worthless. I stopped in at the turn to let them know there was an extremely slow group holding up several twosomes and what did they do... NOTHING. I trailed them in the whole way and never once did a Marshall show up to help. Piss poor customer service and I spent 7 years in the golf business. These guys should be ashamed. This is the worst kept up golf course I have ever played that costs over $100. I was excited to play since it's one of the "nicer" courses in the central coast. The tee boxes our kept up terribly. Hard to find a spot to stand. Greens and bunkers were the only things kept up. If it was $40 I wouldn't be so upset. Save yourself the money and play another course in town for half the price. Also pace of play was over 40 min behind and they had no interest in moving things along. read more

PROS: *Very putt-able greens, at least for me. *Interesting course layout, especially the front nine. *The back nine has a number of holes that require sizable carry over water which can make some holes unplayable for short hitters * The restaurant serves very good food. CONS: * Most of the course does not have cement cart paths so you're driving over really rough, rutted trails eaten through and through by gofers and other burrowing critters. After 18 hole you really feel like you need a back adjustment, very rough and they're no avoiding it. * The tee boxes and fairways are a mess, chewed up by hundreds of weekend duffers of the cargo pants and baseball cap backwards sort that don't bother to fix their divots. * The driving range is more of the same, very chewed up by over use and poor maintenance * Pricey if you play on the weekends with a cart. * The Pro shop staff can be a bit prickly attitude wise. * SLOW PLAY - the last time I played, I couldn't finish. At almost 4 hours for 14 holes I threw in the towel. The group ahead of us had two very young children about 8 years old and the two fathers were trying to teach them how to play golf on the course! Behind us, (thankfully) the Pro-Shop had allowed a six-some to go out. -- Sadly, these complaints seem consistent in the reviews over the years and nothing seems to change. Go at your own risk. Enlight of all this COVID-19 concerns, my wife and I decided to it was time to get out and enjoy the wonderful weather and great opportunities this great state of ours has to provide us. So we decided to drive up the coast from Moorpark to Paso Robles to play golf at a great golf course. It has been a very long time since I've played Hunter Ranch and I forgot what a great course it is! Compounded with a great day weather wise...it was perfect! The course layout is awesome with great challenges but, very playable. The conditions were excellent; well groomed fairways, pristine greens, perfect sand traps, not over watered and well manicured rough. Truly a course I look forward to playing in the future many times to come since my wife and I spend a lot personal time within the central coast area. Also, even with COVID-19 concerns, all the staff there are great....very welcoming and helpful. I can tell that they seem to really enjoy their jobs and why not, it's beautiful & calm. I now consider this is one of my top ten course in central & Southern California. read more

This is a fine course, and the more I play it, the more I like it. Excellent fast greens, very challenging but fair, many visually interesting holes. Moderately hilly, but after taking a cart the first time I now always walk it and carry, much better played that way. Very nice staff, pretty easy to walk on during the week. I usually use most every club in my bag during each round and the approach shots require a lot of thinking and shot shapes. Very challenging when the coastal winds come up! read more

Fantastic course! But you better hit it where your looking. Rough is worth 1/2 a stroke everytime your in it. And if you can't hit the rough, well, maybe you should stay at your muni.... I laugh at the no cart girl comments. It's a small town people! Water dispensers &/or fountains are EVERYWHERE! She's out there, book your tee time on the weekend. After 10, she'll get to ya. Could they provide you with more, sure they could. But then it would cost more. Day in, day out, give me Hunter. Their motto says it all, 'Small town charm, World class golf'!!!! read more
