I LOVED this 6-hole course! A bit basic for hubs tho
    Lynn O.

This is my favorite golf course! River Oaks uniquely offers a 6-hole golf course, which was so perfect for my stamina and attention span as a beginner! The first couple holes were fairly easy (par-3), but gradually becomes more challenging with sand pits, bodies of water to clear, hills and distance. My husband, who's an avid golfer, even enjoyed the course! He did say the grass could be better maintained, though. I'm okay with brown, dry grass to save water given our drought! No tee time reservation necessary. It costs $16 per person and $7 per person for a golf cart. Driving golf carts are so fun! The staff were nice and helpful too. Too bad this course wasn't closer to my home. I'm sure I'll be back next time I'm in town!

From the first tee box (red eagle)...a look at the clubhouse!

I liked all five wines on the tasting menu, including the rosé, which is new for me because I don't usually love rosés. I ended up getting another glass of the Barbera after we finished the tasting. Let me preface this with this - I rarely write reviews, and never have had to write a bad one…read moresadly. I believe sometimes companies have off days, and employees may have a bad day, which can affect one's experience, thus I dont let one bad experience ruin a company's review. But when it comes to my CHILD, you best believe i will never forgive and forget or let our experience be forgotten. We visited this winery expecting a relaxing, family-friendly experience and instead left with our daughter crying after being scratched in the face near her eye by the owner's off-leash dog. What makes this especially frustrating is that the winery's own rules state dogs must be leashed, yet the owners' dogs were roaming the property freely. Our daughter was calmly petting one of the dogs with me standing directly beside her when the dog suddenly growled and scratched her across the face. This was completely unprovoked and witnessed by the owner himself, who said absolutely nothing afterward. No apology, no concern, no accountability. An employee later approached us and said, "Sorry, he's old and maybe didn't like that she was the same height as him, which made him react".....which felt less like accountability and more like an absurd attempt to excuse why a reactive dog was allowed to roam off leash around guests and children. We also observed the dogs behaving territorially toward other leashed dogs on the property, making it even more inappropriate that they were allowed off leash in a public setting. My father-in-law is a VERY well known, well respected, and prominent winemaker in Virginia and across the United States, if you know anything about wine, you know him. So lets say, we understand winery culture and hospitality, fairly well. Had something like this happened on his property, it would have been handled immediately and professionally with genuine concern for the injured guest.....especially a child. Watching the owner casually continue on in his conversation with whomever, and pet the dog like nothing happened while our daughter screamed and cried was honestly unbelievable. In my opinion, not worth the visit for the subpar wine, if you want to take your children/dog somewhere. The poodles were friendly to me, and other adults, until we saw their behavior to other dogs & then my child....The complete lack of concern from ownership after a child was injured was shocking. Frankly, they are fortunate we chose not to escalate the situation further. Parents should absolutely be cautious visiting here with children or pets. An off-leash dog with territorial behavior has no place interacting freely with guests. Absolutely shocked and the owner should be ashamed of his actions & response (or lack there of) to the situation.

Free, ample parking and short drive to downtown and all the wineries/tasting rooms. This Holiday Inn Express consists of two separated buildings, with the second building being worked on during our stay. Despite the construction, we did not experience any interruptions. Actually the unpainted walls and some leftover tools were the only indication there was something going on. The free breakfast is in the main building and standard HIE: they had pancakes, bacon, and sausages on top of usual continental options. And a fancy, automated coffee machine. The kitchen staff was working hard to get everything topped off as soon as an item started to get low. I also used the gym, which is located next to the indoor pool and it was good for a quick workout: some treadmills, elypticals, free weights. The check-in and check-out were quick and easy and I consider the price point a good value. We had a nice time and if going to Paso next time, I'll defiently keep HIE in mind.

I walked into the…read morefront lobby area and was immediately greeted by a lonely front desk to the left and huge pile of caution taped boxes being moved on the right. The walls are completely bare, stripped of paint and most of the decor, but penciled-in instructions of what SHOULD go on the wall is definitely still visible. I thought I had made a huge mistake from the minute I walked in. While I was told all amenities are still open and accessible during this time, I think it's important to set expectations. The outdoor fire pit sits directly to the right of the entrance and borders sidewalk... the neighboring view is of the parking lot. The "free breakfast" is nothing like you see on their website. There is no brightly lit room with cute kitchen themed decor... or places to sit. Rather, it is a set of 3-4 chaffing dishes, arranged on a folding table, next to a "coffee station" atop of a random cabinet haphazardly placed just outside the 2nd floor elevator doors. The highly recognizable pancake machine is legit for display only because of the two days I was here it was not functional... very disappointing. The "newly renovated rooms" looked nice... but that was truly where the buck stopped. Upon arrival, the neighboring room happened to slam the door at just the right time that a plastic covering popped off the wall and left exposed wires at eye level. Uhm what?! It is worth mentioning, that I booked a room with two queen beds. The beds are very tall and while comfortable, were horribly squeaky at the base. Even the slightest shift in the bed led to horrible squeaking from the boxspring. And to make matters worse, the walls in the room are extremely thin... and the front door is hollow core (Google it) so you can hear EVERYTHING. Restful sleep? Think again. And unfortunately, it doesn't end there. The bathroom vent fan in our room didn't work so if you take a hot shower, it immediately turns into an unexpected steam room. (Not just the bathroom, the WHOLE room. No joke. Check the windows and you'll see what I mean!) If you move the mixer valve just a little too far away from the hottest setting? Prepare for an instant ice shower. There was seemingly, no in-between. And the best part, If you are sitting on the toilet, be careful if someone else tries to open the door because your kneecaps are doomed. Long story short... my family has officially barred me from making any hotel reservations in the future as a result of this stay, and honestly... I can't blame them. This was one of the toughest hotel experiences I've had in a long time.

I especially want to recognize the young woman working the Starbucks/food service counter in the lobby during our visit. She was the only employee handling the entire operation and somehow still managed to provide friendly, professional, 5-star service while nonstop guests continued ordering food and drinks for hours. She never stopped hustling and kept everything moving with a great attitude. Honestly, the fact that one person was left to run the entire cafe by herself feels like a management staffing issue, not an employee issue. Management should make sure the cafe is properly staffed, and if someone calls in sick or doesn't show up, leadership should step in to help rather than leaving one employee to carry the entire workload alone. That said, our cafe experience remained positive largely because of her work ethic and professionalism. She deserves recognition for holding it all together and taking care of guests under what looked like a very stressful situation. I only wish I had gotten her name.

It was extremely loud every time someone would get off the elevator. Our room was also on the back of the building by the highway and the road got pretty loud. Luckily I had my sound machine which helped a little but it was still pretty loud. The room itself was clean but they only gave 3 towels for a room with 2 beds. I feel like 4 should be the minimum. The beds were also so hard and the pillows were not good. We did not sleep well. They have a nice big open lobby and a bistro that we didn't go to. They have water in the lobby but it tasted weird. Parking is confusing because the front desk never asked if I had a car. She gave me a parking pass in the stack of check in stuff but I didn't notice it. The next morning I got a notice on my windshield that I didn't check in my car. When I went to talk to her about it she said she would take care of it. I still don't understand if parking is free, or not. I saw QR codes outside on signs to pay for parking.

Of note, we were never given an option for indoor seating when making our reservation nor when we were seated. After ordering, we received our starter (shishito peppers) within 10 minutes. However once we finished the starter we waited an additional 30-40 minutes for our entrees. There was no communication from the wait staff at all, no refills on water, nothing. In fact in the patio dining area I saw three plates of food (including our peppers) delivered to tables in the hour we had been sitting there. Interestingly the wait staff all seemed very busy and moved around the restaurant but not much appeared to get done. Having worked in hospitality previously I have a lot of empathy for the staff as they seemed to lack direction and management support. My husband ordered the mushroom and scallop pasta. It was okay. Overpriced, but was tasty. I ordered the chile relleno and steak. The chile relleno was filled with a large amount of corn that tasted freezer burnt. My steak was thin and grey and overcooked. It was nearly all grey inside with a couple spots of pink. It wasn't seasoned either. The sauces on the plate were good. Our server was polite and did take it off the menu. However, no manager ever came by to check on us or any other table on the patio in the time we were there. I had high hopes for this place based on the reviews. It was a real let down to have a lackluster food and service experience at "one of the nicest places" in Paso.

I ordered the beet salad and it was honestly the best beet salad I've ever had -- super fresh, beautifully presented, and full of flavor. Total standout. My dad tried the salmon taco, which he thought was just okay. A bit greasy and not something he'd reorder, but still fine for a quick bite. The outdoor seating is lovely -- a peaceful garden-style patio that makes the whole experience feel relaxed and charming. My only wish is that the menu had a few more options, as it's definitely on the limited side. Overall, great ambiance, exceptional salad, the service is fast, friendly; a nice little stop if you're passing through Paso Robles.
