Booked a foursome on a busy Saturday. Friendly staff at the check in with the pro shop. Carts were clean and appreciated the oversized cup holders in the clean carts. There was a starter at the busy first tee to keep everyone on time. Course has nice green fairways and tee boxes. Narrow-ish fairways and fast greens. The Marshal was nice and explained some of the quirks of the course. Great views on several holes. Pretty slow pace of play as it's a crowded course with a variety of skill levels. Did I say the greens are fast? We didn't finish our round due to having to turn in our carts by 6:15. We were at 4.5 hours at that point and only got through 14 holes. Not sure if we'll play there again unless we have a morning tee time. read more

Not sure what's with all the recent negative reviews but I had a great time. Last time I played here was 3 years ago. Played on a Thursday afternoon and took 4.5 hours to finish. There was overcast but could still see the water. A lot less trees this time compared to last. read more

Excruciatingly S L O W P L A Y !!!! A 6 HOUR ROUND!?!?! Are you kidding me??? The Marshal did nothing to speed up players ahead at any time during the round. We saw him at least 6 times but still, slow play all day. You need to adjust your marshal's role and responsibilities ASAP. People are paying to GOLF not LOITER. We "played" Saturday with a 1:51 tee time. Didn't tee off on time because the group ahead was waiting for the group ahead of them and so on. That was the start of the slow play. If you have 2 groups stacked at #2 tee box watching 2 groups on #2 fairway, you have a problem. At one point there were three groups on the #6 tee waiting. We saw 4 carts of people leaving at different times during the day because of the slow play. You would think that would speed it up, but no. Still slow. The course was in great condition, the weather and scenery was beautiful, and the clubhouse staff and starter were very nice. But the marshal was ineffective at keeping players moving at any reasonable pace. If play is 15-20 minutes behind at the turn, you have slow players. If it's 1hr + at the turn, you have ineffective marshals. read more

What really makes Morro Bay Golf Course special is the people. Tammy Doshier, Head Pro and General Manager, and Kevin "Schmitty" Schmitt handle the course with professionalism and warmth. They always greet players with a smile and genuinely care about your experience every time you play. I get to play a lot of courses, and I'm always happy to return home here. The views of the bay and Morro Rock are hard to beat, and while the layout is approachable, the greens definitely keep you on your toes. It's a course our community can be proud of. read more

They only charge $5 for kids to play, which sounds like a great family deal until you find out it's somehow $27 for the kid to ride in the cart. Apparently swinging clubs is cheap, but existing near the steering wheel is a luxury upgrade. To make it even better, our cart ran out of battery on the back nine, so for that premium riding fee we got the full 'walk and drag a dead cart' experience. Nothing says customer service like paying extra to get stranded mid-round. read more

I don't know if it is because this is a county run course, but the customer service is horrible. I walked up to the counter in the pro shop to make a purchase while there were three employees behind the counter - within a couple of feet of me. I was not acknowledged. They were talking among themselves, one guy walked right in front of me without even looking at me. I waited for about 40 seconds, enough time for me and my buddy to exchange looks like "can you believe this." I finally had to demand their attention by asking why I wasn't being acknowledged he said "someone had left a wallet", as if that explained why none of them couldn't address the person at the counter. I pointed out that there were three of them, and that the most basic aspect of customer services was to acknowledge the customer. I also explained that it is rude to let a person stand two feet away from them at the counter and not be acknowledged. I explained that they could have acknowledged me and asked for a moment if it was not possible for two of them to look for the wallet while I made a purchase. None of them seem to have a clue about customer service. Only go there if you are prepared for rude behavior from the employees being paid to serve you. read more

Our men's club played here earlier in the year and this was my first experience playing this beautiful course. Yes I agree with some other Yelpers that the course can play slow however, the price to play on the weekend with ocean views, it's well worth the extra wait. I typically play local muni's in the Ventura county area. So I thought the greens and the fairways were in pretty good condition. The holes are unique, can be challenging depending on the tees you are playing, and relatively fair for scoring purposes. The wind kicks up a bit on our back 9 which did make the course noticeably more challenging. Based on the courses proximity it seems like you'd be best to stick a pullover jacket and your rain cover just in case. Overall I really enjoyed Morro Bay Golf Course and I'm looking forward for our club to return next year. read more

We were traveling thru and stopped to play the course. We made the mistake of playing on a Saturday and not asking if there were any tournaments! They had three ‍. We happened to get behind a five some with a kid and they were playing a scramble. (All beginners)Each person took three and four try's on every shot to make contact !!! The Marshall just told us that's how it is on Saturdays it was a 6 hour round !!!! The views are incredible, the course not so much . Not in great shape and very bumpy cart paths ! I love this course. Being a senior with a SLO card, paying $30 to walk these hills amongst trees and turkeys with great views is a pleasure beyond words. It's a beautiful course in a great location and the quiet is so enjoyable after having golfed for years in SoCal. "Don't tell others about this gem" should be a requirement for any new Morro Bay resident who golfs. read more

Horrible costumer service! These people need serious training regarding manners and how to speak to people. They lack any effort on wanting to be there and do their job properly. Can't believe the weekend rates here ... $98 to play this course had me blown away. The website displays $75 for a weekend rate , but that doesn't include the cart fee which is $24. We tee'd off first thing in the morning so pace of play was great ! Lovely views , but not worth $100. read more

Honestly was looking to see what the catch was but there wasn't any. Amazing green, great prices, courteous staff, and carts are charged per cart which makes it more affordable. Was interesting that there were no bunkers but I personally loved that since I'm not a pro. Amazing and beautiful course to do. It's a must!! read more

The most expensive golf course that is so slow you can't finish 9 holes under 3.5 hours. Pay 65$ for 18 but they can't handle flow so you're forced to play 9. Cart Marshall is an absolute asshole. Never coming here again. read more

Great views towards the ocean, forgiving course layout. Cool in the Summer. The entire facility is old and run down. Bring mosquito spray. We were swarmed starting at about 6pm through last light like I've never seen before. Hundreds of mosquito bites. Made it impossible to even concentrate on your swing. If I don't get West Nile or Zika virus, I'll be amazed. Clearly the neglect of this facility has allowed standing water in numerous places on the course. Visited the course from LA in the beginning of June and no complaints whatsoever. The course was well maintained, priced reasonably, amazing staff, and GREAT VIEWS! Just recently I went to the range and noticed my rangefinder was gone and I knew I left it at the course. I called and Justin helped me and was able to locate the lost rangefinder and guide me to communicate with Tammy. Tammy assisted me in getting it shipped to my residence as I live almost 3 hours away. The both of them were a massive help and will definitely plan on coming back!!! Love the course. Love the views. Love the greens that challenge you. This course has no clue how to manage pace of play. A weekend round will take you 6+ hours. Thursday and Fridays will be 5+ hours. Lots of old timers and locals (which is great) but just don't give a damn about golf edicate. Multiple redos out of the box, multiple redo putts, or taking 10 mins to find a Kirkland Golf Ball in the eucalyptus grove. You get the picture. read more

I've played this course a few times now , and the previous rounds were all non-weekend days, we finished in acceptable 4 to 4 1/2 hours. Those rounds were pre-COVID, so I was a bit nervous reading the more recent reviews saying the rounds were 6+ hours. I booked a Saturday morning tee time 7 days in advance with no trouble. My wife and I arrived about 1 hour ahead of time and checked in. Had no problems with the two young guys at the desk, even though it was 7:15 in the morning. Yes, the clubhouse is feeling a bit rundown and the products and displays should be updated. Driving range is in decent shape. The starter at the first tee was friendly, reminded us that the greens always lean toward the water, warned us about the possibility of mosquitoes, and even offered some bug repellent for my wife. The mosquitoes or not a problem, especially after the wind picked up a little bit after about the 7th hole. The course is in good shape. A few fairways were a little brown patchy, but generally okay. The greens were in very good condition and had a good feel to them, even though they were very fast. We finished our round in 4 hours 10 minutes, never having to wait at a tee box. Overall a very good experience. Four stars only because the rundown feel of the clubhouse and food service was not open early enough for something to eat in the morning. read more

Played here a few times over many years and they always have slow play. They have a Starter that shoots groups out every 8 mins but maybe they should go to 10 mins. With it being a tourist course and the quality of play it is just too many golfers on the course. We had a couple tees with three groups backed up on them. The Marshal was cruising around and no help. He wasn't making any effort to try and speed play up. 3 hrs plus for 9 holes is ridiculous. We quit after 11 holes. Pretty course but you better get the first tee time of the day. read more

Overcrowded and understaffed. They tried to put way too many people in the course at the same time. There were FOUR foursomes playing one hole during my time there. I walked off after a two and a half hour front nine...I must say, the starter was incredibly friendly despite the overcrowding. read more

The course is very beautiful and you get amazing ocean views surrounding you. The people who play are very nice and patient so atmosphere and players who treat golf as a gentleman's game is a plus. However with that being said I was marginally disappointed with my last visit slightly. The gentleman named Jim who you sign in with at the first hole although initially friendly became very impatient with my mother who misunderstood his instructions for the group we were supposed to tee off with. When my mother apologized he seemed unfriendly and rude. People do make mistakes and she did apologize and said she was just driving the cart for me and tagging along and when my mother apologized he was impatient and not gracious. So I'm taking a star off for Jim's bad attitude but aside from him I otherwise would not hesitate to recommend this course. It is beautiful and a great way to enjoy golf and soak up some amazing beach views. However I would appreciate staff being more patient and understanding when misunderstandings happen. They will from time to time and if we were doing our best to correct the misunderstanding Jim should have been more patient especially with what we paid to golf here. read more

Friendly staff, challenging course, and $122 for 2 players for 18 and a cart in a midday Friday in June. The guys in the Pro Shop, as well as the Marshall, the Starter, and the young man working the cart return were A+ in friendliness and hospitality. Carts were well maintained, and a cart from "the line" will do 36 holes, no problem. The course is beautiful! Lots of slopes, so the cart recommendation by fellow Yelpers is spot on. Greens were in wonderful shape, as were the tee boxes. As for those greens--UGGH! Everything rolls towards the ocean! Remember that, and, well, good luck! Seriously, the greens were the toughest I've ever played . . . yet, still, they were fun! This course is definitely worth the visit, and I am told the views on non-June Gloom days are fantastic (smile). Cheers! RS read more

Course is beautiful and fun. However after teeing off the young man who checked us in approached my sister in law and girlfriend who were in the same cart aggressively spoke to them and after realizing that they were a part of our 6some loudly yelled "F***". The girls didn't understand what had been the issue being that HE had been the one to check us in. Later, the same staff member approached us and said our group needed to split up into a 4some and 2some. We tried to do that, but being that the play was so slow, we ended up playing closely after a few holes. The staffer came back and aggressively approached us and yelled at us stating that "if we don't do what he says he's going to kick us off of the course." At this point he was shaking and yelling at us. We had already told him we could split up, however this obviously didn't quicken pace of play, because it was still 6 people playing. It would be one thing if the staff member was being treated unfairly or we had tried to get one over on him, but for him to approach the women in our group and yell explicatives, and then berate us later on for not staying split up, and not actually addressing the slow players ahead of us, was abhorrent. I love coming to this course, but this issue was one of the worst ways I've ever been treated on or off of the course. read more

This review is from 9-11-11: I have been meaning to try out the restaurant at the State Park Golf Course in Morro Bay for a couple of years now, and I finally got the chance. It is basically a glorified snack bar. I had the most fun people-watching while I ate my lunch!! Golfers are a whole 'nother breed of folks!! Most of the business this place has is the golfers picking up some food (and DRINK) for their golf day. Most meals were taken with them on their carts. People also fueled up after their golfing day. This "snack bar" is also a "bar bar"!! They even have a happy hour. While I was there folks ordered beer and mixed drinks (a double vodka cranberry was ordered for lunch!!) One little old lady ordered a hot chocolate, asking what they had to "go in it"!! I would love to just hang out here people-watching for hours on end. Oh, there was also a Rotary Club meeting going on in the banquet room so there was a bit of a parking issue. Their items are quite overpriced, but they are made in the back fresh by hand. There are many "regulars" who just have to walk up and the ladies know what they will order. I ordered the Cheeseburger, which came with fries, and I also ordered a large soda (she gave me one refill). When I ordered my meal the "Tip" jar was almost empty, but by the time I added my dollar after my meal it had at least $10 in it!! These ladies sure make great tip money :-) I had to take a picture of this humongous cookie they are selling!! Check out the size by comparing the $5 bill next to it!! The burger tasted like one I would get off the grill at home, charcoal taste. It was large and tasty. The fries were slightly seasoned steak fries, although they didn't stay crispy and warm very long. I am not sure I even finished the fries!! I got a soda refill, and I liked being able to take the cup with me when I left. I decided to try their grilled chicken breast sandwich out, no tomatoes, no bbq sauce, cheddar not swiss. It was a bit spicy and too salty, must have been the seasoning on the chicken. I didn't like the french fries enough to have them this time, but the pickle was a nice touch. I wanted to dine on the patio, but there was a rude cigar smoker. All of the other tables were taken by non-diners so I had to eat at the table right next to the snack bar. The soda was a bit flat, but I was able to get one refill to-go. I didn't like that the credit card slip asked for a tip and there was a tip jar also. I don't like tipping before service, but then I think the gal thinks I don't tip because she doesn't see the money going into the jar!! It took a while to get the sandwich, but that means they cooked it fresh, which is a good thing, and it had a nice char-grilled taste. They also have specials, so I might try one out one of these days. I don't like the chairs at the tables, they are for skinny butts!! They have a patio, but they allow smoking so that is not an option for many people. They offer breakfast options, as well as lunch and a full bar. I think they forgot my receipt both times I dined here, but one time for sure. I did see that a golfer got the wrong order, but he was nice about it. If I was in the mood for this sort of food and wanted to people-watch I might return here some day. read more

I love the course, I always have. I worked at the course in the early 90s and except for a few missing trees, it felt the same which is great. The Pro shop is a disaster. I decided to play last minute and had to buy shoes and rent clubs. The clubs were atrocious...not even a full set and some brand that I wouldn't give to my kids as a starter set. I get that this shop won't sell a lot of golf equipment, but spruce the place up, set up some decent displays, have ten decent rental sets and sell some decent balls. You might be surprised and maybe some of the locals will actually buy something. Oh, and the guy behind the counter just told me to go behind the counter and pick a set of rentals. I rarely rent clubs, but I've never seen that ever--whether I was just hanging around a shop or renting clubs myself. Our 11:30 tee time was also running 30 minutes late. That shouldn't happen..I know...I was a starter at the course for several years and if you're 1/2 later by 11:30, you're not taking care of things the way you should. For the price and locale, this place would be a 10 if it were not for the shop. read more

Ocean views from almost every hole, the course is always in great shape, and you can play a round with a cart for around $35 in the afternoon. We showed up for our round and it turned out to be almost a 6 hour round. They over book and under perform. I ended up leaving my range finder on the golf cart. When I noticed it missing I called the pro shop. They told me they had it there. I asked if they could mail it to me since I lived over 5 hours away and I would gladly pay for the shipping. They said no problem they would get it out. A few days went by and I had not heard from them about the shipping cost nor had I received my range finder. So I called only to be told that the person who I spoke to was off and I would have to call back after the weekend. So I called the following week to be told that they could not find the range finder now. After several days of trying to contact the manager Matt he finally called me back. He said the range finder that I was told was mine was really someone else's. He then started to get upset and yelling at me when I was asking simple questions. He said I had an ulterior motive and what did I want. I was calm the entire time and he just keep getting louder and louder on the phone with me. I told him all I wanted was to find out what happened when I was told one thing then somethings else a week later. I fully understand it is my responsibility that I left my rangefinder but to be told it was there and then treated the way I was by a manager of a golf course it ridiculous. read more

The ONLY reason I am not giving this course 5 stars is because it was our first time playing this course and we were reprimanded by the Starter for not checking in with him. Had we been familiar with this course at all we would have most definitely done that but upon check in & payment we were told they would call us when it was our turn. The Starter was rude and completely out of line yelling at us like we were children. Everyone knows golf is a mind game sport so he totally put us in a negative a the 1st tee off. Make sure you ask EXACTLY where, who & what at this course from the start. Otherwise, views are amazing and the rest of the staff was pretty great. read more
