My friends and I came here just for the driving range and, wow, this thing is tore up... AND, it's not on the beach. It's in a small valley near the beach. There's only nine or ten driving mats here and all them of are either falling apart, lumpy, or laying on a slant so your ball won't stay put. The range balls here match the mats. A lot of them had chunks missing and large cracks. A large bucket of balls cost $10, but I'd say onlty about 75% of the balls are worth hitting. This is an iron only range, no drivers allowed. Which is odd because they have the space for driver shots. I did hit one driver shot and got in trouble for it. The staff here wasn't the friendliest. In my opinion, avoid the range and just give the course a try. read more

My family and I decided to played 9 holes & visit the range as we were in the area for a quick trip. We were a little nervous since the reviews were hit or miss... but we were pleasantly surprised. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. By the pro shop and restaurant there is a super serene seating area overlooking a body of water with sun chairs, tables and chairs. The range was okay. The grass was a golden color but I thought it was a great place to bring a beginner since we had brought my dad for the first time. The 9 holes that we had played were nice! I absolutely loved all the trees, flowers and plants surrounding the area. The grass was green for the most part (there are visible yellow patches on each hole). My family thought it was a decently hard course considering they're intermediate golfers & 1 beginner. We saw deer, rabbits, squirrels and turkeys which was super cool as well. This course wasn't too bad in our opinion. It definitely served its purpose for us & definitely one of the more affordable options. read more

It is a goat track! Tee boxes are not maintained. The trash cans were filled. The holes are poorly marked making it a mystery as to which tee box is with. Never again! The cart path "if you can call it that" was horrible. The tee boxes are 1/2 numbered. Oh and the driving range is a mess. No maintenance there either with sad mats. I wasn't expecting pga but a lil tender care for the cost of the course warrants a lil more care. It has been the worse course I think I have ever been to. read more

What happened to you guys? Yes there is very little maintenance happening. I wanted to write this in the hopes that the management would just take one day and use it to put markers and signage on the front 9. I mean paint some rocks red and white and put them on the tees. A small sign that has the hole #. We spent too much time looking for the tee boxes. In 25 years of golf I have never seen anything like it. Several folks looking for their tees. It's so shaggy it's hard to know where to go. Lots of backtracking and searching. You have to keep a close watch on the group in front of you and hope they are going in the right direction. The back 9 has signs for the most part. We used our yardage watches to calculate whether we had the right box or not. Lots of lost people. An easy fix. It's a shame their prices aren't lower. Let's start this off by saying.... I drove an hour just to come golf by the beach. The pictures and area stood out and made me want to come play golf here. Do not be fooled! First off, the staff are pretentious and rude, the range is the most janky I've ever seen and worst of all WHAT TYPE OF PRO SHOP DOESN'T SELL GOLF BALLS! I am from out of town and just wanted to play some golf on vacation and I would never think to be treated so rudely and poorly for not having my own clubs or supplies! I can see why it only receives 2.5 stars We have been staying here for years and in the last 3 years the golf course has really gone down hill. The fairways are poorly cared for. The golf cart paths are full of ruts and pot holes. There are lots of tourists in the area and the course isn't vigilant in making sure they stay off of the course when taking their walks, riding their bikes or scooters. It's a shame because it has beautiful potential. At those prices it should be much more cared for. read more

A challenging course to play and we did get all 18 in. They were setting up for an event which is probably why the other reviewers only played 16. But yes, the course was in pretty bad shape. If it weren't for the deal of two players and cart from Golfmoose I would never had paid full price to play. All the other mentions are pretty much true. The cart path is horrible, the fairways are pretty much dead (but your ball goes a long way), and the layout is funky. Heard there was something going on with management, neighbors, local players etc., but the few people that were playing there said "ya should have been here 15 years ago". Good things were it wasn't crowded, starter was super nice and Mulligan's employees were cordial. When I stay in Avila next time, I'll play again but only if I can get a deal. read more

This was my first time here. I enjoyed the golf course. I thought I would see the ocean from any hole I tee'd off from, but the day we golf was the same day as the Sublime w/ Rome concert. So a couple holes were rerouted and not playable. Besides that, I enjoyed it, I also got to Sublime practice. Beers and burgers were delicious, but tell me a golf course that doesn't have a good burger. I plan on playing again soon, if you want a nice view and semi challenging course, then Avila Beach Golf Course is your place. read more

Location location location! Nestled into the hills beside the sea, this golf course meanders along a valley. It is not an easy course, but not too difficult either. The weather in Avila Bay (Port San Luis) is tricky. It can be cold and overcast, then warm to scorching with a kind of trapped air bubble, so think Northern California and layer accordingly. The holes back in the valley will always be a bit warmer. You do share the course with joggers and bikers along the bike trail, and sometimes the drought has yellowed patches of the grass, but the fresh sea air makes it all worthwhile. It is one to a cart right now because of COVID, which slows the play a bit for everyone. Average cost can be $60. You can go online for coupons ahead of time. The local Mulligans Grill and Bar is a good choice for refreshment when you have completed 18 holes! read more

This place is a goat track at best. I think I herniated a disk driving my cart done the pastures they imply are fairways. It's disappointing that they charge 88 dollars to play with temporary holes and dirt you have to hit off instead of grass. What set the tone was just the difficulty getting a cart from the starter who has some oddities about asking questions. It's Just too bad because the town is stunning. Bottom line: 2.5 x over priced for the gopher holes riddled coarse, dirt for fairways that were in places 10 inches high with weeds. read more

Very disappointing. Not worth the money. The maintenance of the course is terrible, almost non- existent. The only green grass is the tee boxes and the greens. The fairways are dry, brown, very hard. Unless there is a drought, they shouldn't look like this. Cart paths are terrible, potholes, many just dirt. The golf carts don't look like they've ever been washed. 4 of us took a golf trip out here, drove from Fresno. We took a look at the reviews on the way up and I have to say this course is unfairly rated. It does not deserve 2.5 starts. And the ones who have given it bad reviews sound dramatic. For the price it's not bad at all. You're in paradise. Sunday afternoon went for a drive up north and wanted to golf so I stopped by and not many ppl so it was an easy day at the green but the courses were not marked right so from time to time I got lost on where I was going , also there was no 10th hole but there was 19th hole which evened out the 18 holes For me it was fun cuz the reds were shorter compared to the mens blue and white There were too much bird poops on the green I wonder if it was the three hours drive.. til next time.. read more

This course is very poorly maintained. It used to be pretty decent a couple years ago. They have increased rates since and the course has went downhill. Very disappointed with the care that the staff shows for this course... especially for the money. Not worth it. All bunkers have weeds overgrown in them. Half the cart paths are closed and you have to take extremely bumpy off-road cart paths. I wouldn't recommend this course to my worst enemy. 1/10. This course is hard to play as a novice. You can't see where the flag is and the course map is nearly nonexistent. I have an app where you can see the satellite map and yardage and I recommend that if you are new to the course to download some type of app to use while playing. I think we lost at least 2 dozen balls on this course. You see exactly where you hit and when you arrive at the ball it has vanished! It's deceiving because it's so sloped everywhere on the course that you could hit a great shot but it rolls off the turf by sometimes 30/40 yards! There is lots of water everywhere so bring lots of balls. I was playing with a pretty seasoned golfer who lost a bunch of balls himself. I can't complain though you are surrounded by beautiful ocean views and trails. The turf itself has lots of crabgrass, is very dry and the tee boxes are not level at all. read more

They were replaced with two rinky dink par 3 s Someone should have given us a heads up ( though it was supposedly noted on website) felt like we were playing at an amusement park. This course is in bad shape. The greens are good, but everything else is terrible. They are very strict on no ride alongs (spectators) so I paid full price for my wife to join me in the cart. I get it, they have probably had some people take advantage of that in the past. I just wish they would use this money to fix the course. You have to drive on the fairways because the cart paths are so chewed up my four wheel drive truck would have felt it driving over them. And the fairways are in terrible condition, dried up. No seed on the cart to fill in your divots. On top of all that there was a ton of garbage all over the course. Broken glass on the fairways, cans and bottles all over the place. I get it, it's a concert venue, but hire some people to clean this place up! This should be a $45 green fee cart included. It's a cool course but it seems they are more interested in events than taking care of the course. read more

They appear to have given up. Numerous severe deferred maintenance issues on top of an overall poorly maintained course suggest management/ ownership have generally given up. Washed out cart paths (unrepaired) that cause awkward rerouting between green and tee boxes on a couple of holes are inexcusable. Fairways generally splotchy, greens poor. Partially redeeming qualities were a fabulous 19th hole environment, friendly staff, golfmoose discount, and a pretty good course layout which gets them up to one star. Play elsewhere. read more

We love the location of this course. It has some good Challenging holes . The 7th is a par 3 over a pond . The 10th & 18th you hit over the estuary outlet to the Pacific Ocean . The course green we're in good shape . The fairways were ok . The patio behind pro shop has great views of beach . We will be back to enjoy the great weather in SLO. read more

Never, in all of my life (56), have I been charged such an incredible amount of $ for a "spectator"/"ride-a-long". My green fees on-line were $41....then they asked for $89 for wife to ride...said they were short on carts....well, that is a golf course problem, not the golfers....gouging the golfer! Been waiting to play this course for a while. I can tell you it is a magical aged course with spectacular views You can tell the golf course is going through a lot of course management changes (bare hill fairways, patchy greens) but the layout is beautiful with narrow fairways, and blind corners for $89 green fees. The front is through more trees and requires accurate shots. The back has spectacular over the water shots as well as different angles to the green. Next time I would play a lot more iron and hybrid shots, especially in the tight chute fairways Afterwards they were setting up for a big band at the grassy knoll outside of the pro shop and Grill. Would love to stay here especially with the views of the beach. With a little bit more love and care this golf course jewel could become a five star golf course.
