Most of the houses in the immediate area are French Style New Orleans homes so it's really cute. Just be aware that if you drive a couple blocks down in the wrong direction the roads will start tearing apart and scenery will change. I've told a few people my son will be attending this school and most ppl applaud the news. I hear great feedback from other parents of a mix of different races and I've only heard good things about them. During orientation they stressed about how they are a school who welcomes families of different cultures and students who have differences. And I feel like they mean it. During orientation one of the teachers was giving a story about how much they care about their students and how racism is around us so much and the students who attend this school will learn how to accept one another and learn and understand the different cultures of different races and learn to love one another. The lady was in tears at the end of her speech and I just knew she meant every word of it. We did apply for a scholarship to attend the school, we applied rather early and we got in. They have an online system to pay for lunch, field trips, donations etc.. which I think is very organized. They do have a bus service for New Orleans parish residence, for Jefferson Parish, parents have to pay for bus service. Inside the school is very clean, everything looks fairly new, colorful, bright, and organized. I'm really picky so yes I looked around. The equipment in the cafeteria also looked fairly new and clean. They stress the importance of music, art, and physical education. Which most schools do not. Also they have a speech therapist at the school. Some people tried to discourage me from bringing my son to a language school when he has some catching up to do with his speech. It's amazing to see that he's not the only child who struggles with speech and they have professionals there to help regardless if he's learning one language or two. They also have after school programs like home work help if they stay in after school care, science club, and Soccer Shots. My son just started attending, we find out who our teacher is on Monday but I'm really excited, some say it may be challenging but we are ready for it.

I know mommas complain about grass stains and dirt stains. But it's better than blood stains. Kids get rough. Kids fall down. Black top is unforgiving. There could be traumatic brain injuries and worse. I know the playground doubles as a parking lot for mass and that's where a lot of funds come in but regardless. Total insanity starts in the summer. They have softball leagues playing on the hard black top. Not cabbage ball. Softball. With aluminum bats and gloves. So you have a relatively hard ball coming off a metal bat bouncing off black top. Players diving and sliding on black top. That's a recipe for disaster. If a kid falls on his/her knees that's it. A bum knee for decades and knee replacement eventually. Believe it. It would be idea if the school laid down a layer of a foot or two of soil and grow grass. Sure mommas won't like the grass stains and church goers won't like parking on often times wet grass but still. It's a lot better than leaving your kids running around and falling down on hard blacktop.

Catholic School System and I am in awe of the superior classroom experience provided to my children here (e.g. a Science Curriculum that not only included dissection but also a skill set of over a half dozen different types of medical stitches that were instructor demonstrated, student shadowed, then proficiency tested...WOW; and is your 7th grader being taught History by a published author? This particular instructor managed to not only capture the attention of my ADHD son, but he imparted knowledge that was carried, with I dare say, excitement back home.) The Curtis Family leads by example, they are personable, professional, and accessible to their students and parents; to be welcomed into their community by The All-Time Most Winningest Coach in high school football history was both humbling and inspiring, as he is the most genuine human being I have had both the privilege and pleasure of meeting. There is a winning attitude that is ever present and contagious, and the love, respect and support is not only shown by the faculty and staff but is also seen by the respect shown amongst their students. But upon graduation or course A/B level grade course completion, you will know the material FORWARD AND BACKWARDS. Not bashing other universities, but a UNO Degree holds weight; here you get OUT WHAT YOU PUT IN!!!! I graduated from high school in the mid 1990's, and had gone to community college where I was living. In my search for a 4-year university to transfer to, UNO was suggested to me. I applied, and was admitted Fall term 2011 as a junior in the College of Business Administration. This school is built on what is a former military installation, as you may be able to tell by some of the older cookie cutter houses surrounding it that all look like military housing. The base was closed sometime in the mid-1950's, and the state took over the property, creating the University of New Orleans. In recent years, the basketball team has had some recognition for their stellar plays. My anxiety was high as I moved across the country to come here. I do feel as if I got a well rounded education, and was exposed to differing points of view here. Though it took me another 2 and a half years to graduate, I can say that I did it. The gym is nice, has an indoor swimming pool, an elevated track above the basketball courts. The University Center houses the student government, the dining hall and several kiosks of fast food. All of the buildings were clean and neat that I have been in. The school of Business is awesome. The career development center is very helpful and will help you in getting your resume in shape. I would be careful of the tutor center for the school of business, as I did not find them helpful. The main piece of advice they give is to read the textbook. They are unable to help with the details of accounting. The Cove was still closed when I first arrived to UNO, but they finished renovating it my second term I was there, and that was nice. It is also nice that they have the Privateer Enrollment Center in the library, taking up half of the first floor. It is nice to have one stop shopping for financial aid, Veterans Services, the bursar's office and be able to get your parking pass and student ID all in one place. It was all in separate areas and buildings when I first got to UNO, and quite the pain to get to everything, as the steps seemed out of order to get everything done. The streamlined affects are wonderful. When it comes to the parking pass, I think it is a bit on the high side for prices, and parking is at a premium. The library is pretty cool. When it was built, there was a rule put into place that nothing could be built between it and the lake so you could have unobstructed views from the 2nd floor up. That is a great idea. The only reason you can not see it from the first floor is due to the levee being in the way. In the spring, they have a crawfish boil that is free for all students, and a small charge for the alumni. They have plenty of things to do. An outdoor movie night near the cove. Plays, musical performances, and so much more. I am glad that I came, I am glad I graduated. And I am glad to have done my first two years at a community college to transfer so I did not have to retake the ACT! Also, when you (as a student) have enough credits to be considered a junior, each term, there is an option for a fine dining experience. The intent is to get you more comfortable with the experience of dining in a professional setting. Half your table will be students, the other half will be faculty and staff and will give insights on how to properly handle yourself in public with future bosses, coworkers and other business people. Too cool! And a great experience! This may not be the most popular school, but the basketball team has made some traction with improvements lately. You are in a good part of New Orleans, and you are close enough to all of the action in one of the coolest cities in the world. All in all, I appreciate my experience and education here. I do feel prepared for the much anticipated career change, and am grateful for the opportunity. This university is more of a commuter school, but as an adult student, I, in no way, shape or form, felt left out or old. I highly recommend this school for a well rounded education that is well earned. Some of the Business Administration courses and more of the Accounting courses really tested my stamina and drive for a degree. Truly. Please do not mind the younger students that guide the orientations or the tours of the university, they do not fully represent the entirety of the school, but talk to some of the students if you can.

The kids were fantastic. Anyone with the brains to get in can and will fit in here. The faculty is great. The administration was such a problem that I can't give more than three stars. In fact, the administration is what I attribute my pure hatred for high school. Unfortunately there's a school board that oversees the principal. So even though there are huge problems with the current (not personal experience with this one, just from having spoken to several members of the faculty) and previous (good riddance!) principal, it's next to impossible to convince the board that there needs to be a change. If the principal is allowed to pick on teachers he or she doesn't like, it affects how the teachers treat each other and thus how the teachers treat the students. This is a very liberal school. I wish the dress code were less strict. The point of going to Franklin was supposed to be having the ability to be yourself, and to learn who you are. Why can't kids in high school shave a mo-hawk or dye their hair blue if they want to?
