First of all, I recommend making reservations. I made reservations prior to arriving in the city. I had the best experience at this restaurant, and recommend it to everyone who visits New Orleans who desires dining at a high end restaurant. It was raining. Luckily I had an Uber driver drop me off at the entrance, same as other patrons. I was early, so I checked in, and waited in the lobby. The host was polite and professional. There's the main dining area downstairs, but I was taken upstairs where there were two additional, separate dining areas. I was seated at their "best" table. Great view of the first floor, outdoor patio dining area. Wine with dinner? They brought out the wine book. It was nearly as thick as a dictionary. Regardless to say, this restaurant has an extensive wine list. Ordered a bottle of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 2020 ($135). Very good. Bread was served. Hot, fresh, and absolutely delicious. I chose the gumbo for my soup, and for my entree, I ordered the Squash Gratinee ($47). Nash H was my main server, but there were at least three others. One to refill my water glass. Another to pour my wine. She said I was supposed to relax and not "work." Challenge accepted. Superb service. I ended the evening with a slice of Pecan Pie à la Mode. Delicious, and beautifully presented. The most memorable part was when I was leaving. I walked down the stairs, but took the wrong stairs, down to the kitchen. None of the staff stopped me, although in hindsight, they were looking at me funny. One of the gentleman said I was there to say hello to the chef. If you want a more relaxed New Orleans experience than the French Quarter, give Commander's a try. Off in the much-quieter Garden District, it's in a nice neighborhood, with a stately old-school vibe. There is also a dress code to be honored, which we were prepared for, but be advised and check the website before making reservations. This was jarred a bit by being led back to the "annex" building - which means the hostess leads you through the kitchen (!), back to another building that is decidedly 1970's in its vibe, decor, and lighting. And I don't mean this in a good way. Service was very good, our server was knowledgeable, funny, experienced. Food was 4 out of 5, and struck me as a more traditional menu with a creole "nod". Looked like there were at least four different parties of locals celebrating birthdays, so it certainly can't be described as a tourist spot. If we return and try it again, I will insist on the main dining room and not this 'annex' option. read more

No matter how many years go by Commander's remains the gold standard for dining in NOLA. The service is always top notch, the jazz brunch always puts a smile on your face, and the food is always outstanding. I feel like if there was a restaurant to be one of those people who steal the rolls and puts them in their purse this is it. The buttered bread starter is the definitely the bread to do it with. I'm honestly so disappointed. I've heard so many good things about the service ambiance and food here. But I was so so so let down. The food was mediocre at best. The only thing I did really like was the lemongrass fish. The worst part of the night was the service. Our server, kori was so inattentive. my water was empty for more than half the night, she rushed through the menu and we could barely hear her, she didn't come check on us, and when she made a mistake on the check, she didn't even come and apologize or address the situation. In fact, she was so MIA, we had to ask another waitress for help. It's a three course meal for brunch. We came on a Saturday, late morning. From the minute you walk through the doors you are treated so well! Everyone greets you, says hello and welcome. It took my breath away. We were seated and our waiter came over right away and introduced himself to us. Ryan took great care of us with regard to all of our food. There was another server who handled all of our drinks. She was great too. We enjoyed some drinks. I had the gumbo, beef entree and strawberry shortcake. My fiancé had the fish entree and the pecan pie. Be ready with a song to request when the trio comes to your table! We didn't come prepared! We were so happy to have come here for brunch! The restaurant is beautiful and the servers are all polite and patient. If you ask them for anything, they'll take care of it. However, with a team of servers, you'd expect empty drink glasses to be cleared and water glasses to be filled without asking. The mocktail menu was quite surprising, so make sure you give it a gander. Plan for 2-2.5 hours for dinner at least. They are in no rush and want you to enjoy your dinner. Everything was very tasty and well seasoned. They were out of the fish for the lemongrass lacquered fish, so they substituted scallops. They were good but there were only four medium sized scallops. I was expecting more of a portion size. Dessert was decadent. The Sparkle Plenty was too tart for our table, but the table prepared Bananas Foster was a hit. If you come to New Orleans, this is one of those restaurants that you must visit. But, do not show up here unless you have a reservation. Reservations are a must! From the moment you walk into this restaurant you step into the old school. Not only in atmosphere, but in service. That's one of the great things about this restaurant. This is the case with myself, as well. The one thing I will say about this restaurant is that if you want to order a bottle of wine, you will have to ask for the wine list. This is both a great boon and a detriment. This is due to the fact that this restaurant has one of the largest wine lists I have ever encountered in any country, anywhere on the planet. It is massive! It is page after page of wines that you can choose from from all over the world. For me, someone who has a very good knowledge of wine, many of the wines they offer I have never even heard of it. This is both a good and a bad thing. Good, because you can experience something new. Bad, because you do not know which wine bottle to choose from. Of course, their staff will attempt to provide their services in helping with your choice; whether asked for or not. But, I always find this style of service tends to be a little bit biased. Me, I always like to choose my own bottle of wine. Meaning, this may take you a little bit of time to accomplish. Beyond the wine, their menu is fairly limited. You basically have a few choices to choose from. All of which are good, depending on your pallet. The meals they prepare are all Louisiana-influenced dishes, so this is a great thing. You're entering into a very exclusive restaurant, that offers Cajun style dishes. It can be a great experience. Overall, the main thing to keep in mind, at this establishment, is that the staff will never leave you alone, even for a couple of minutes. They take care of you at a level that has been lost through time. It is really extensive! I cannot emphasize this enough. A fun note here: The last time my wife and I ate at this restaurant, we were unintentionally exited down through the kitchen. Personally, I thought this was some sort of mistake. But, one of the staff members happily said, "Say hi to the chef." The moment we entered the kitchen, the head chef greeted us with the biggest smile. The servers are well dressed and there is a formal ambiance you no longer find today, That said the service was excellent. The server had my water replaced before I even noticed it was low. We went to Commander's Palace for the 25 cent martini lunch on a Friday. When I say this is one of the best experiences I've ever had in New Orleans, I mean it with all of my heart. One of us had a chicken dish and myself and another friend had the beef dish. Everything was beyond exceptional food wise. As a 33-year-old pastry chef, I've had the opportunity to experience a lot of great restaurants, and Commander's Palace absolutely lived up to the reputation. We went for the jazz brunch and had an amazing time from start to finish. The atmosphere was lively, elegant, and full of classic New Orleans energy. One of the coolest moments was getting to hear "Pennies from Heaven" played right at our table, which made the experience feel even more memorable and personal. The service was on point the entire time and honestly went beyond my expectations. The staff was attentive, knowledgeable, and made the whole experience feel welcoming and special without ever feeling overdone. The food was outstanding. The black skillet roux dish had incredible depth and richness with toasted garlic and local hot sauce. The cold-smoked cauliflower with green tomato chow chow, crispy oyster mushrooms, and Louisiana field pea hummus was creative and perfectly balanced. The 16-hour barbecued pork shoulder over warm buttermilk biscuits with mushrooms, caramelized onions, poached eggs, and tasso hollandaise was comforting while still refined and elevated. As a pastry chef, dessert really stood out to me. The bread pudding soufflé finished tableside with warm whiskey cream was exceptional--light, airy, rich, and technically flawless. The butternut squash soup was also excellent. Great food but our server was pretty bad during the jazz brunch. Our entire meal for 2 ppl ended up being 2 hours long! First we waited a long time for the menu, then a while between courses, and then a long time for the bill. You could tell he really didn't want to be there. Would've been so much better if they just played jazz in the corner like literally every other restaurant. I was expecting a lot more from the bread pudding. I thought the bread pudding was going to be a bready top but it was a huge layer of whipped egg whites. What I love about bread pudding is a really good crust but there was no crust lol. Everything was soft. It was delicious especially the sauce but I didn't care for the texture. 2/5 service. From the kitchen tour to the food and the drinks, thank you! Service, I will say, is more casual, or they feel you out, if that tracks? For such a high-end place, they are more happy to have you than "you should be grateful to be there." Which I love! Jokes, fun and good times is the atmosphere here, but always with respect and an incredible wine and food knowledge. The tuna was a big Star and the bread pudding soufflé, come on now?!! A must get. So I had the Cochin de lait tostada, which is pork shoulder on a tortilla goodied up with cheese and red bean purée and a pickled relish. As my choice of soup I chose the demitasse tasting of all 3 soups: the turtle, creole gumbo and the soup of the day, which was a corn and crab bisque. Perfect night at Commanders Palace. I have to share that the food was fabulous, but what made our evening so special was the team that served us. Emma's team made us feel like family. Her team was constantly checking in with us making sure everything from the water glass to our anniversary cocktail was perfect. When we arrived, no less than 20 people greeted us as we walked to the table, Seated in a corner with glass everywhere overlooking the neighborhood met us feel relaxed at home. Emma started our experience, with champagne and garlic toast , we followed with a cocktail as we peruse the menu, and decided on our courses. I chose the 1-1-1 soup sampler, turtle soup with Sherri. Black Eyed Peas and cabbage soap, and the third was their famous gumbo. The trio allowed me to taste their soups, and I was not disappointed. I think my favorite was the turtle soup over the gumbo and that surprise me. My wife had the black eye Pea and shredded pork soup. For dinner Kathy had the Garlic seared Louisiana Gulf shrimp over sweet corn creamed polenta, and I had the Prosecco poached jumbo lump crab over spiced New Roads pecan crusted fish with roasted corn, asparagus, grilled kale, melted leeks, and whiskey spiked crushed corn cream. The corn cream complimented the fish perfectly. We paired it with a recommended, red wine. For dessert we both had Commanders Palace signature Creole Bread Pudding Soufflé with a whiskey sauce. The soufflé topping was so light and airy and as we spooned past the baked topping we experienced the caramelized, cinnamon bread pudding beneath ... and of course the sweet whiskey sauce... I have a new favorite dessert.. This a desert you do not want to miss. As we enjoying the dessert, Emma brought us each a Milk-Punch Brandy....(brandy, half-and-half, a sweetener, topped with nutmeg) a unique treat to close the dinner. Local. Been many times. Recommended many, many times to visitors. Today reversed my opinion. Noise level: perfect. Didn't need to shout to have a conversation. Lighting: perfect. We went to celebrate a birthday. The wait staff was more engaged with one another than our table. Constant bottlenecks outside of the kitchen where they congregate. We ordered a "rubber duck drink" for one of the kids and they brought out the toy with no drink. Beverages arrived slowly and in shifts. The food. I should preface with this: I have an extremely refined palate. I've worked in food service. I know what works and what doesn't and why. The sweet summer salad was drenched in vinegar. The sweet part never showed up. The gumbo roux was burned. Salty. The cochon soup: congealed. Literally looked like the wet part of canned dog food. We found all of the food over seasoned. Salt, paprika, vinegar. Heavy handed. The pecan crusted fish was overpowered by the heavy peppery spice. The steak was cooked well but hard to cut through. The menu said mashed sweet potatoes but it had 3 small bite sized cubes and again, a spicy vinaigrette that stopped us in our tracks (not in a good way) and drenched the steak. The pork chop was the clear winner at our table. We had to continuously ask for refills. The server took one person's coffee order and no one else at the table. We had to flag them to get more coffee. I have bragged to literally thousands about my undying love for Commander's bread pudding soufflé. I dream about it. I make a copy cat recipe once or twice a year at home for guests. This was my big disappointment for the night. It was so heavy with cinnamon, it tasted like it had been drenched with red hots candy. Way off. I've eaten this dish at least 30x over the years. I know the bread pudding. The real kick in the teeth was when we got home and our 20 something's headed for the fridge to get leftover burgers from yesterday's cookout after we had just spent $700 (with no alcohol) On my way home, I sat and read through other recent reviews and found the owner's feedback sounding something like this: Thank you for your review. We appreciate your comments and will share it with our kitchen staff-my paraphrase. I realize food and flavor combinations are extremely subjective. I noticed similar complaints in several of the reviews I just read. It's not us, it's you. If you had indeed made changes in the kitchen and with your staff, we would've had a much better experience today. The silver lining: my husband leaned over during dinner to tell me my gumbo and bread pudding are far superior to what he just had. So there's that. read more

We had an early reservation for the Saturday Jazz brunch. They walked us through the kitchen which was nice to see and a smaller bar area to our seating room which was past the outdoor patio. We were treated to nice soft jazz and were happy that they went around the room to ask each table for a song request. L-O-V-E by Nat King Cole was mine. All the balloons were a nice festive touch. I'm told it's only for the weekend. The service was impeccable and they were dressed in tuxedos. We had a team of two servers and they were attentive and not overbearing or rushing us. We had Bloody Mary drinks and a delightful espresso tequila drink. Delish! My favorite was the pecan crusted fish. Cooked perfectly and wonderful flavors and sauce. All my favorite elements: fish, corn, crab, green beans, and crispy batter. My plate was clean! Desserts were impressive. Sad we couldn't finish them. Five star service! I was blown away with how great the service and ambiance was during my visit. Little did I know, the original owner was an avid solo diner, and they place a blue ribbon on any tables for "special guests" and that includes solo diners! They sure made me feel special on this night I chose to treat myself! I was sat at a nice little table in a dining room overlooking the courtyard. I received a warm welcome from everyone on the service team, no less than 5 servers waited on me during my visit. I chose to try the chefs tasting menu and the wine pairings. I also asked about adding a tasting of the famous turtle soup, and they were happy to add a course. The tasting menu was perfection. Perfectly time courses, great portions, and fun unique flavors. This was my first time try anything with turtle in it, and my first time trying sweet breads. Everything was fantastic. The wine pairings were very nice as well and a worthy addition to the tasting menu. The server who was describing the pairings was nice, but I think an educated sommelier would have matched the experience more. The experience definitely lived up to the price tag. Hubby brought me here for my Birthday. I have to start off by commending them on the service. I am a stickler for hospitality & the did not disappoint. Everyone was super helpful, friendly and efficient. It seemed genuine and wasn't off-putting at all. We arrived earlier than expected, so we waiting less than 5mins to be seated. We were seated upstairs and and I noticed the banquet style chairs that weren't as comfortable as the one downstairs. We ordered: Starters: Gumbo & Lamb Salad Entrees: Gulf fish w/saffron sauce & Wild Shrimp w/ polenta & broccoli o Dessert: Bread pudding soufflé Drinks: Cabernet/Prosecco My husband said the "garlic bread" was his best bite and the cab was incredible. We realized he is not a fan of saffron. My shrimp were cooked/seasoned to perfection. I also like the bread pudding soufflé, it had nice flavor and contrasting textures. We absolutely loved our Jazz Brunch at Commander's Palace! It was recommend to us by multiple people and we are so glad we went. First, the service is top notch. From the greeters to the wait staff, everyone was so attentive, helpful, and kind! You truly feel that southern hospitality. We also loved how the band walked around asking for song requests. It was such a cool experience that I'd love to repeat again someday when I'm back in Nola! Also, there is a dress code. There will be a wide range of outfits but I'd just recommend dressing like you're going to church and you'll be just fine! read more

The service here is absolutely second to none. We had come to celebrate my bachelorette party - not only did they get us celebration balloons, but they came back to replace all the balloons with white ones for the occasion. Incredible! Food was pretty good - cauliflower hummus is incredible! The steak is delicious but the swamp fish is just okay. I'd go with the steak. Lastly, we got the bread pudding soufflé and they also brought out the ice cream trifle for free. So incredibly sweet! Thank you to the amazing team that made us feel so special. We frequent Commander's Palace quite often. We are here two nights ago and it was wonderful. Unfortunately, we had a different waitress. She was drool, inattentive, and condescending. Although the turtle soup was divine, the salad had no dressing on it when it arrived and the garden risotto was bland and unremarkable. read more

ONE OF THE TOP 5 MEALS OF OUR LIVES!!! We went for a delayed anniversary lunch (because we have toddlers at home) and it was such a great experience! We had the turtle soup and gumbo and my husband and I both (he being from Washington and me a NOLA gal) agreed that it was the best gumbo we'd ever had! The turtle soup is also a must. We had the beef tournedos for entree and the bread pudding soufflé and both were melt in your mouth amazing!! Oh and the 25 cent martinis were also a hit hehe! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! read more

Wow, wow, wow! Booked the Sunday Jazz Brunch for our anniversary while we were visiting NOLA. This place is a classic and so classy! The food and the service were outstanding. I LOVED everything about it! We had gumbo and the Tasso Shrimp for appetizers. I had the Curry shrimp for my main and my husband had the pecan crusted fish. For dessert we had bread pudding and strawberry shortcake. The food was exceptional the service was the best I've ever had. This was by far my favorite experience in New Orleans.
