If you just want fun, oh my gosh.... when my daughter had her 6th birthday party this year, my favorite part of the entire event was watching the looks on all the parents' faces. Every one of them was beaming. It is FUN watching your kid do this stuff. And inspiring too... cuz guess who started working out??? Me. The coaches are supportive and encouraging. When they see SuzieQ working on something (not in class, just on her own) they whoop and cheer her victories. They say hello when she walks in. She's six, but they say hello. They acknowledge her. That's vital because it builds a sense of belonging.

The gym is a bit laxed, so it started off a bit rocky in that I didnt realize that the class has started without me. We started the class running laps outside. And came in for some heavy stretching and overheas bar work! That's when things got real. Tip no. 1 dont wear gloves, use plenty of hand/climbing chalk. It makes a great difference. Also, when you want to store things in the lockers, bring your own lock! They dont have any there. We transitioned into squats and intense leg work... Woooooooooow (Im still feeling it today). We moves upstairs, where I found a Ninja Warrior's dream. It was everything from Rock Climbing Walls (easy, medium, and hard), to overhead bars, overhead balls (of all sizes). It was aweeeeeeesome!!! The instructors, Sam & Sam, were doubly awesome! They made sure that an amateur Ninja Warrior like me did not feel left out, modified exercises to help me build my endurance and strength, and helped me make sure I did them correctly to prevent injury. We finishes the class by completing an intense ab workout!!! Although I am super sore today, I loved the class and will def be back!

I tried going to the gym, which worked out for a while, but I soon became bored with the constant repetition. I needed something a little more interesting. Lo and behold, I stumbled across this gym. Met the owner Jeff on an open gym day, who offered a free class before a membership, but I decided to become a member right then and there anyways. Best decision I could've possibly made. Here's a mental picture of a typical weekday evening, maybe around 7: walking into the gym, the first thing you see and hear are the punching bags. The smack of gloves against rubber, and then a timer going off every minute or so at a constant rate. Look to your right, a small class of new members doing a warm up. Look up at the boxing ring, a sparring match is taking place while the owner Jeff is on the sideline throwing in commentary for improvement. Chairs by the front might be occupied by a mom or two, watching as her little ones learn the basics of shadow boxing and how to wrap their hands for protection. All whilst rap music is blasting throughout the gym. With this scene in front of you, you won't be able to shake off this need to put in some work. Moving onto the actual classes. Not going to lie, the first few days suck. The workout with the instructor Jorge is going to kick your ass- I've been here for a little more than a month and for some classes I show up to, there's someone running to the bushes outside to puke at the very end. I've seen a military personnel practically winded- guess boot camp has nothing on here! But as the weeks pass by, you start noticing that hey... I did 10 more than the last time. This doesn't suck as much. And you start noticing how your stamina is improving, and that makes everything so incredibly worthwhile. You can thank Jorge for that, an amazing instructor who will push you beyond your boundaries, but understands that the body still has physical limits and will always want your health to come first. All around fantastic gym with great energy. I highly recommend to anyone seeking out a good workout for a very good deal, wants to relieve some stress, or plan on becoming the next Rocky. Coach Donis is a great coach--he explains things in a way that actually makes sense and really takes the time to help you improve. Since I started, I've gotten a lot better and learned way more than I expected. He pushes you, but in a good way, and you can tell he really cares about everyone getting better. He's also just a genuinely good guy, not just a coach. This gym is a great place for kids who want to learn boxing, build confidence, and actually work toward becoming champions. Rise Gym has a commercial gym side, a powerlifting side, and a strongman side. In the commercial gym, there is an upstairs and a downstairs section. There's already plenty of treadmills and cardio machines downstairs but there's even more in the upstairs area as well as a section for kids to play in. Not to mention, there is a supplement store where you can shop for protein, preworkout, vitamins, healthy snakcs, etc. so I thought that was pretty neat! As a powerlifter, Rise Barbell is hands down, the best place to work out. The powerlifting side just opened this summer and I cannot thank the owner Dr. Sean for providing such an amazing facility for me to train at before I competed at Raw Nationals this year. There are plenty of brand new TSS combo racks and barbells as well as new Rogue Kilo/pound plates. There's also many deadlift platforms as well as one olympic weightlifting section. Aside from that, there is a long strip of turf that separates the powerlifting section from the machines for body builders. Speaking of body builders, there is a posing room so that's another big plus! Inside this building, there is also a Physical Therapy section run by Dr. Sean. Oh yeah, did I mention there's AC too? I've visited numerous powerlifting gyms in the Houston area but none of them had AC so I appreciate how I'm not drenched in sweat just from walking into a gym. Aside from the amazing facility, the staff and trainers here are incredibly kind. I appreciate how they helped host/run fun events for members to participate in! Overall, the amount of hard work and passion that the owners and workers put into this gym speaks volumes. I do appreciate the cleaning products and towels to clean off instruments after use, however during non peak times there are no towels available. Not sure who to let know regarding this, but will change my review once I see this area addressed.

Positives: Master Mark the owner was willing to coordinate with us on scheduling and the kids being beginners trying something new. The location is wonderful with a large facility, ample seating, and clean well-kept space. Our kids learned the basics and overall enjoyed their time spent at Double Dragon including the joy of earning their first belts. Master Mark was also attentive to our kids as they learned the basics, stepping in to help when they needed additional instruction. Negatives: Our primary reason for not committing to this business long-term is that our kids are used to positive reinforcement through their school and at home and we found the approach Double Dragon uses to be contrary to our values. At times, it was reminiscent of boot-camp for kids. A second concern is that Master Mark was not present as often as we would expect. There are two young adults/older teens that lead the lessons on a regular basis as confirmed by other reviewers. From an outsider perspective, there are some behaviors of these two young leaders that indicate immaturity and getting their ego fed by pushing young children to do their bidding by shaming and belittling. We do believe this is what they have been taught as a leadership approach modeling Master Mark. Also not appropriate for children, in our opinion, is the sexually inappropriate music choices playing during practice. Finally, we signed up during COVID and found very little enforcement of parental masking. If you are looking for a place of old-school discipline, where your kids will be pushed to their limits and beyond through threats and punishments, then this might be a good fit for your family.
