Great stay at the Chancellor with my husband and two young kids. This was one of our last stays on a round the country six week roadtrip. So we were rough from the road. Staff very friendly and helped us get our bags from the car and direct us to parking. Our room was on the 4th floor near the elevator. There must be some kind of kid science behind that because a lot of hotels put us near elevators - whatever- we don't mind. The building and rooms have that San Fran character. Cozy small spaces overlooking busy avenues. Large walk in closet was a huge bonus to keep our roughridin burst open bags of contained. The bathroom tub was luxe large and kids loved the bath and promotional rubber duck they included. That's the thing about this hotel - of course they have nice clean rooms , an amazing location you can't beat, friendly staff - but they also have these little touches of awesomeness that put them from bland hotel stay to awesome experience: the little duck in the bath, the jar of sucker candy in the room, the convenient jar of cotton balls and toiletries in the bathroom etc, mucho extra towels stacked in the closet basket, the two for one drink coupon for to loosen up a couple of road tired parents, and the gratis old-timey popcorn machine filled with delicious smelling hot pop in the lobby. All these things that the hotel entrusts its visitors to use not abuse as needed, makes you feel more like a human than a number here. We will be back for sure. read more

UPDATED REVIEW: After staying here a second time, I am updating my review. You have to take this place for what it is, and that means that, it you are lucky, it will be a great bargain, but if you are unlucky, it will be an uncomfortable experience. Pros: + Good location, right on Union Square. + Off-site parking garage (currently $45/day) + Rooms are clean and seem pretty recently updated. + The bed (mattress + pillows) were very comfortable. + Staff are friendly and professional. + There are nice little amenities like free cookies, fruits, 2-for-1 drink coupon, and the coffee station (with teas, honey, flavored syrups, etc) + Price is about as good as it gets, considering all of the above. Cons: - Walls are pretty thin... we could hear some of the outside noises, and even moreso could hear the sounds of noisy neighbors at all hours of the night. UPDATE: I didn't have this issue the second time I stayed. - There is no air conditioning. On many days and nights in SF, this won't be an issue, but when it got up to the upper 70s when we were there, the room became a bit stuffy. UPDATE: The second time I stayed was in the winter, and weather outside was cool... the room itself was a very pleasant temperature. Overall: The price for the location can't be beat, so I gave this place a second try for a one-night stay, and glad I did. It's kind of a hidden gem, but I probably wouldn't stay in warmer months (such as September), due to the lack of AC. read more

This place has been perfect! Close to Chinatown, close to shopping, close to the BART. The bathtub is amazing! Perfect amount of space. A coffee machine in the lobby, plus water fill station, lemon water station, apples, and cookies. Bar is rarely open, but there are lots of places to grab a drink very close by. read more

What a fabulous hotel! Rory was so helpful with booking my room, and my mother-in-law's room. He made sure all went smooth upon checking in, as well as having us right next to each other. I am beyond impressed with the exceptional hospitality. The hotel is centrally located, steps away from restaurants, bars and Union Square. Rooms were small, but very cozy and comfortable .One thing I loved was how fluffy and comfortable the pillows were. The bathroom was really cute! They have a nice cozy waiting area. During my stay, it was decorated really nice with a Christmas tree up, as well as a great coffee machine with different coffee choices. My favorite was the hot mocha! Chancellor is an older hotel on union square, but inside it hides a hidden charm. A beautiful lady buddah sits on the check in desk and the lobby has an intimate small cocktail bar behind the check in desk. The people at the desk are very helpful and friendly and the rooms are crisp and clean with lots of fluffy pillows so you can rest after your long day is over. This is a solid budget hotel. The staff were friendly and accommodating for an early check in. They don't have a restaurant on premises, but I appreciated having free apples, coffee, water, and cookies. The oatmeal raisin ones were the best. The rooms were a bit dated, so it's not the type of place you would take your wife for an anniversary. Also, the bathroom is a bit small for my average male frame. The caveats aside, the room was relatively inexpensive, clean, and close to many restaurants and shops at Union Square. There's a Walgreens just next door. My room on the 3rd floor was quiet, which I appreciated. Parking was extra, but we found valet parking at the Marriott a block away for half the price. read more

My wife and I recently returned to the Chancellor Hotel after 20 years. We were extremely excited to return. We arrived around 9:30 PM on a Friday night. Check-in was quick and easy. We had a room on the 14th floor facing Union Square. It was great being able to leave the window open each night and listening to the sounds from outside and the fresh air. We had a queen bed room. Hotel is over 100 years old so the rooms are not large. We did have a nice sized closet that was a walk-in and housed both of our suitcases. There was a small refrigerator too.Room was clean, bed was extremely comfortable and we had daily housekeeping while at the hotel. Chancellor has water, tea, coffee, and cookies all day. Alicia at the bar is amazing. Very friendly and knowledgeable. The hotel had a bottle of sparkling wine with an anniversary card waiting for us which was a nice treat. Location is fantastic in regards to mass transit and other key destinations. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again and plan to on my next trip to San Francisco. This is a great hotel. The first time and most definitely not the last time I'll be staying at the Chancellor. This hotel is so very sweet and exceeded my wife and I's expectations. When we arrived it was a stones throw from union square so for the price you cannot find a better location. The staff was all very friendly and helpful. Not to mention when we got to our room it was very clean, old, but in an endearing way, and I cannot understate how clean it really was. On top of everything after checking out of our stay and getting to the airport i discovered I left my airpods lying on the bed in the room. I promptly called them and they offered to taxi them to the airport but I just had them mail them to my home which they so graciously did. Thank you again to the Chancellor for being such a great hotel. I recommend them to anyone, not just those travelling on a budget. read more

Public spaces are the epitome of clean with sharp attention to detail. Stairs were a nightmare unfortunately: steep, thin, tight stairwell. Stick to the elevator (in spite of its slowness). This configuration was equally straightforward as the Double, with the addition of a large walk-in closet! Def worth the rate if on an extended stay. Pictures online were accurate & the dimensions work well for 1 but an intimate couple could also survive it . BED [Queen, Twin] -- good Their Queen mattresses were much better than the Twins. As far as bedding goes, A+ for everything: clean, lightly used, & soft. Specialty pillows provided enough support through the night & stack well. Satisfying sleep experience (when not in a Twin)*. BATH -- ok Small space with a cute aesthetic, thanks to the rubber duck . They don't slouch on cleanliness either. The shower & tub experiences were satisfying: great water pressure & temperatures. Theres just so many fixtures forced in here that it's cramped. The toilet installation especially wasn't comfortable. TV/ENT./ACTIVITIES -- good A 40" flatscreen smart TV with satellite programming. Not a fancy display by any means. It still gets the job done & works for drowning out convos from other rooms. great hotel with great service. they give out cookies, popcorn and many more. they also have a coffee/tea/water station which is very convenient. it's a clean and cozy hotel. it's near to many stores and food places which are all walking distance. the parking garage is close and takes only a few minutes. my only issue is that there were certain employees who work at the parking garage that have an attitude and were rude. he talked to us in a condescending manner and we did not appreciate that. hotel is great but parking garage staff are okay. read more

Our flight to SF was delayed from 11am to 10pm. We made it inside the lobby past 12am. Luckily the night manager was there to greet us and he was kind. The check-in process was smooth and we got 2 key cards for the room. I love that there's fresh lemon and ice water in the lobby. There are designated used and new cups for the water. Before the elevator, there's a station where you can make yourself coffee or tea and also a water station to fill up water bottles. There are 2 elevators and 1 staircase. The staircase is on the narrow side so beware when turning the corner. Had great sleep every night thanks to the fluffy pillow and the comfy bed. The room was warmer than I thought it would be in SF but that's just good insulation. There's a mini fan inside and a ceiling fan if you feel hot. The fridge was great for storing our leftover Little Sweet Winter Gourd drinks. The free wifi was much appreciated. The walk-in closet is big. I love the two luggage holders and the umbrella that you can borrow. If you take the umbrella, they will charge you but if you like it you can also purchase some umbrellas downstairs at the front desk. I was tempted to get one myself if I didn't have to check it in on the way home. We forgot to put the Do Not Disturb in for a day and when we came back the room was nice and tidy with all our things where they were originally. The bathroom is a little small but it's an old building. There was one night where there was a loud group of men partying in the room behind our bed on Friday. We could have called the front desk so not sure what would have happened. I guess that's a risk with any hotel on the weekend though. I don't hold it against the hotel. If I stayed in more I would have taken advantage of the Chancellor library on the floor before the lobby. I enjoyed my stay at the Chancellor and would come back in the future. read more

Historic beautiful hotel in Union Square. Love the large bath tub in each room with complimentary bath salts. The coffee machine in lobby that makes all types of fancy delicious coffees is the ultimate! Worth taking the elevator down in the mornings and not having a coffee bar in the rooms. I loved this place for their service. Firstly, it's post pandemic and this industry was hit pretty hard. I'm giving it 5 stars for the genuine service received given what they have do work with. It's not a 5 star fancy hotel. It's probably a 4 star hotel given it's location, price, and cleanliness. Service is a VERY big deal for me hence the 5 star. David and Deonte and other staff at front desk, and the GM Wes, made sure all things went smoothly for us. It's located about 4 walkable blocks from the Bart, their public train transit. The trolly picks up and drops off right in front of the building. Powel and Post The hotel has an old time feel, which I was fine with as long as it was clean. They offer complimentary coffee, tea, and water. I gotta say the best thing I liked about this Hotel was the WATER! I know it's sounds weird but the water filter machine in the lobby was delicious water. I miss it! They also had cookies and fruit. There is a small bar with a sports TV and bartender. The view from the hotel room was directly to the street. Because it's an old brick building, there are temperature issues in the room that you have to adjust for yourself. There is a space heater located in the closet to adjust if you need it. They do have a/c and heat with an EXTRA space heater. They have a pillow service bar which was different but I didn't try it and now wish I did out of curiosity. Genuine honest service goes way farther in my book than perfection. I think this this was a modest hotel, with people who are trying their best to give great service. It didn't have a corporately run feel which I hate. It had a personal touch feel. I didn't take any pics because I really was just so exhausted whenever I entered the hotel, I just wanted to sleep. This location you can walk to China Town and there are many shopping places from Saks to Macy's in walking distance. The food was great in the area! Make sure to get Custard Tarts from the Golden Gate bakery, it's a long line and worth the wait. Osmanthus for Dim sim - don't even waste your time trying somewhere else. Soup dumplings, spicy green beans, porridge, noodles with numbing spice was really different!! Ha Tea had the best bubble tea I've ever had if you get the passion fruit, with honey lemon. It's really delicious. You can taste real fruit and freshness. The Coffee Movement was an experience lol definitely try that. There was a Matcha tea place that had yummy matcha ice cream, matcha coffee with mocha, and match floats. If you're looking for a place to stay in Union Square that's also center of the city, this is the place! I spent so much time looking for an affordable, safe place to stay while visiting SF and am so happy I found this one. They also don't charge a $35 per night destination fee like some hotels. The hotel is in a safe area. I always felt safe walking back to it at night from the bus stop. There was always plenty of people around at night. You don't have to worry about the noise from outside either. You don't hear any of it from your room. It was very peaceful and quiet for the most part. They have elevators which is nice but we were staying on the fourth floor so we just took the stairs unless we had our luggage. I LOVE that they have free water here! They offer free coffee, fruit infused water and they have a separate water filling station. I wish more hotels also had this. They also offer coffee and popcorn. We checked in at midnight due to our flight being delayed and there was still someone available to check us in. The staff is super friendly and accommodating. Every time I would call to confirm our reservation or to let them know of our late arrival, they were always nice. They also have free Wi-Fi here. The hotel room is smaller than most which is expected for SF but I still think there was plenty of space. Our room had a walk-in closet that had enough space to change in. There was still enough room for a tv, dresser and desk. The room also had a an empty mini fridge. The restroom also had a full size tub/shower. The room was super clean. Housekeeping tidied up room and respected our belongings. Even though the hotel is old, the rooms were still really nice and had contemporary furniture. The pillows were SO FLUFFY. I'm tempted to buy the exact one for myself. I also liked that the restroom had a rubber ducky, cotton balls, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, a hair dryer and shower caps. This hotel felt so cozy and was a nice place to rest after being out in the city all day. I would definitely stay here again the next time I'm in SF. read more

What a gem of a hotel! I am * so * happy we found this. We were already in the city and extended our stay (and needed to check out of where we were) -- so booked the Chancellor. I am definitely going to look into this hotel as our first choice on our next trip. 1) I love the fact that it's independently owned. I love unique properties that have character. 2) They have a great happy hour special and have popcorn available in the lobby during that time. 3) Cookies and apples also available in the lobby. 4) Rooms are well kept and clean. I love the old school big bathtubs. And the little Chancellor rubber ducky is adorable! You're in the heart of Union Square, which is super convenient. The cable car CAN be loud out front, but they do supply ear plugs. I personally love being right in the center of everything. The only thing that was a little frustrating: we arrived early and our room wasn't ready upon arrival. The woman at the front desk said she would call when it was. Well.. the call never came. We ended up going back to the hotel around 4:30 and yep, our room was ready. I guess that's my slight annoyance: if you say you're going to call, call. Nevertheless, HIGHLY recommend. As an evening arrival I was welcomed with all the needs I requested ahead of time, storage for my medicine, top floor quiet room, extra pillow for the snooze time! Tracy at the front was so helpful, letting me know for the start of the day how to walk and maneuver through town if I started early. The bellman took my medicine and stored it safely away. LOVED the view and comfort of the room- WOW! The view is incredible, now for an original hotel 1914 , there is no AC in your room, they have fans, heater to plug in for your needs. The space AWESOME! This tub I can't wait to draw a bath and submerge the day away. They have a full bar 4-10pm come and say hi to Alicia so is fun and a mixologist of the finest! March 14-17th I found clear blue skies , soft winds and beautiful sunny days. This was a dream come true, with the cable car a few feet from the entrance to hop in and out. The chancellor is incredible- a historic gem and wonderful place to stay! Will tell everyone I know about this great place. I had my doubts about booking this hotel because the price was so reasonable for the area but I'm glad we did! The location is perfect, the staff is friendly and most importantly... the room was spotless!! The bar is small but there was always a seat open and the drinks were great. We recently stayed at the Chancellor Hotel for a weekend and were, once again, delighted with our experience there. The location is the best, half a block from Union Square. The front desk was welcoming, friendly, and accomodating. We asked for and received early check-in, as we arrived in the city mid-morning. By noon, they had us and our luggage in the room and we took a much-needed nap, with a cool breeze blowing in the window. Our 2 double bed room was larger than we had had on earlier trips, and very quiet, as we requested a room in the back. The hotel doesn't have air conditioning, but our room was very comfortable with just the breeze blowing in. The room was an unbelieveable bargain at about $150 with taxes. read more

The hotel was ok. Small, no air conditioning, kinda rude staff. HOWEVER this was made a worst night because the parking garage is very suspicious. On our way home our car started having issues ... turns out lugs from our rims were missing ???? We could've got into an accident on the freeway long 2 hour drive home ...And the gas was depleted ... compared to what we had it when we left it overnight. Supposedly the parking garage is open 24/7 and has people up front that check you in / take your keys ???? For what ???? Clearly this is unsafe... Pretty good hotel for a stay, though it is a few years past needing a renovation and lacks modern amenities. Overall, we were satisfied with our stay, especially because it was the cheapest option available during our trip. The pros: + Clean + Comfy bed + Large room with huge closet + Free water and cookies in the lobby + Central location right by Union Square - the Powell Street cable cars literally go right by the front door + Nice staff The cons: + No gym. When we asked at check-in, he smiled and said, "No, but we have a bar." To their credit, they do give you a buy one, get one free drink at their bar. + No on-site parking. They partner with a nearby parking garage if you need to park, but it was $45 a night. I recommend not bringing a car. + No on-site laundry. Again, they partner with a nearby business to offer laundry services, but they are closed weekends, and the prices are outrageous. It was $6 to wash a single shirt. Thankfully, we were able to skip this option, but if you need laundry, you would probably be better offer going somewhere else. + No pool or roof, and at least in our room, no view. read more

3 night stay for hubby's bday. The room was clean and smelled fresh. It had an updated and modern look with a historic feel (can be seen throughout the fixtures and architecture). The bed was comfortable. The bathroom was spotless. They had a rubber duck for company when bathing (cute). We had a view from the back of the building on the 8th floor. No real view but we didn't mind at all. The noise wasn't bad either. The only "real noise" were the room doors slamming, but it didn't happen often enough to be a problem. Location is beyond amazing. It's right on Powell street where the trolley runs. Union Square is visible as soon as you walk outside. The staff was friendly and check-in/out was seamless. We utilized the valet service for our car (cost $49/night; self park $20/night). We received complimentary wine for Hubby's bday (not bad). The hotel offers breakfast for 18.99 per person, but we chose to eat out. It was a better experience for exploring the city. This hotel will forever be my first choice stay when visiting SF city. read more

Convenient hotel location. Located right on Powell Street right next to Union Square, this hotel is quite the value. Westfield Centre is only down the street and you have plenty of dining options all around. I think for the price (hotels are quite expensive in SF!), you can't go wrong. This hotel is convenient and decent enough for a good night's sleep. The staff are also very nice and friendly. They smile and greet you, which is a plus. They are also very helpful in answering questions. The hotel lobby itself is filled with a water dispenser, free coffee, and sometimes even little snacks for guests. When I went to SF, it was pouring almost every single day. The fact that the hotel had hot water and tea readily accessible was so nice as I got to warm up after walking in the rain. The room also includes an umbrella, which actually came in super handy during my trip. Keep in mind... there are some setbacks. The hotel room is just ok. It's cute but don't expect to be wowed. The bathroom is also very compact. The tub is nice and spacious but the toilet is right next to the sink. There's not much wiggle room in the bathroom. Also the walls are thin so you can hear your neighbor. If you have a neighbor slamming their door at 1 am (that happened to me), you will hear it loud and clear. Such a great beautiful hotel, Darryl is such a great employee he went above and beyond to accommodate me with whatever he could in his power. Linda is very nice lady. She was very caring and respectful. This hotel had a great view. They gave me a free high quality expensive champagne for my anniversary reunion. I felt like they really cared about there's customers. SF is a crazy place to my opinion. So going into a business like this and seeing these little things really made me feel better. Times are tough and you can't expect to much that isn't offered the fact that they wrote a card for me was heart melting. God bless everyone in this company. Mr. O' Brien is one of the greatest people I met in this hotel. They take the time to listen to you and they don't just get rid of you. We had a good conversation and I felt all his good intentions towards me as a customer. SF isn't a cheap place to visit. So coming to this place getting the rates I got with the view of the city was crazy to me in such a positive way. God bless the Chancellor Hotel. They been around for over 100 years and the conditions of this place was better than half the new hotels that are around SF honestly. They have free cookies and flavored water. What a wonderful hotel. I purchased a 3 night stay at a charity auction. Always love when businesses give back to charities. It will be our go to hotel in SF in the future. Nice friendly staff. Very accommodating. They let us check in early and would have stored our luggage before our flight home when we left. Covid cleaning practices were top notch. Great location. We had a queen bed room with a view of Union square. Had the window open and loved hearing the sounds of the City. Thank you. read more

This hotel was perfect, great location, walkable area, close public transportation. There's a diner next door and a Walgreens on the corner. The rooms were clean and cozy. But most importantly the staff were great, especially Mike, the concierge. The person I was staying with was picked up in an ambulance and had to be brought to the emergency room. Mike was the only stress less part of that entire night. It meant the world to me during a very scary time. Did I mention that there are free water and cookies in the lobby?
