Dr. Hickson was Internist in Newport Beach, but moved to Texas at the beginning of 2012. Dr. Hickson had met and interacted with Dr. Khorrami through the Hoag Hospital Doctor network and was impressed with her. So impressed, in fact, that Dr. Hickson referred her patients outside of her 8 doctor practice to Dr. Khorrami. In my opinion Dr. Hickson was a tough act to follow, but Dr. Khorrami and her staff have really impressed me. Because I was switching practices I decided to have a full physical and blood work done. I am so glad that I did because Dr. Khorrami observed that my thyroid medication needed to be tweaked. What a difference that made for me! Goodbye chronic headaches and random heart palpitations. You must sign and accept binding arbitration of any dispute. She is asking you to give up your legal right to a trial by jury in exchange for health care. This is a binding agreement you may want your lawyer to review before signing. I'm not an attorney, nor did I have one readily available to ask, so before I signed her agreement at her office, I Googled this procedure on my iPad. I found many articles deploring doctors who make a patient surrender their legal rights before being given care. The New York Times Magazine, for example, said "these agreements should be resisted". The New York Times stated that "It is unconscionable for a doctor to suggest such an arrangement on at least two levels. First, the waiver calls into question whether the doctor is committed to the highest possible quality of care . . . Second, the waiver exploits the patient's lack of bargaining power. A patient comes to a doctor's office in need of medical care. The physician holds that care hostage to the patient's agreement that if the doctor should act in a negligent fashion, there will be no recourse to the courts of law."' Rather than give up my legal rights, I left and found a competent doctor who trusts her ability to provide quality care, more than fear of being sued for malpractice errors. PS: You may be interested in some additional research. 9% of California physicians ask for binding arbitration agreements with their patients according to a study by the Institute for Civil Justice. When I had a health issue on Christmas night several years ago, she returned my call right away, determined what medication I would need, and found a 24-hour pharmacy where my husband could procure the medicine right away. How many doctors do that?? I had my annual physical examination today and when I got home I told my husband, "What a blessing it is that we found Dr. Ahuja. I love her!" She spent as much time as needed to go over all of my medical issues, discussed test results, nutrition, medications, etc. She is always attentive and really listens. Her office staff is always friendly, caring and efficient. They are prompt in answering my calls and emails and when I am in the office, I never feel rushed. During Covid, they have been exceptionally careful and I have always felt safe even though I am at risk for having serious problems. If you need a primary care physician, look no further.
