I was really excited to try this place. I might give it another chance, but the meal I had was not very good, the man who was dishing up rice and serving plates (not the waitress) was also handling the trash cans, and there was no lemon or lime for my water. Overall, I'd say 3 stars is very accurate for my experience. I had a seafood dish with egg. It was more like egg drop soup with seafood dumped on top and rice on the side. I am not a Thai food professional, but I've eaten a LOT of Thai food, there are much better places around town. I'll be back and maybe will update my review. However, if that guy is handling trash and plates again I'll definitely not stay too eat. read more

During a little family outing we all had a craving for Thai food. Our normal choice for Thai was closed so we decided to look around a bit. We stumbled upon Chang Thai, and couldn't be more satisfied with our choice. The food was excellent, very fresh and plentiful. Our group ordered pad Thai, basil fried rice and Kua Kai, as well as some of their soup. So yummy! Please give this place a try the next time you're looking to satisfy your Thai craving! read more

Was a favorite when first opened but now the service is awful! After waiting 15 minutes for a table and another 15 minutes for a server and water....our food took over 1 hour to be brought out. Empty tables in the upstairs dining room were full of dirty dishes and leftover food for the entire 2 hours we were there! It's gross to be eating in an environment that feels dirty and ignored. The issue seems to be they prioritize take out over dine-In customers. Literally saw more food go out the door than being served to diners. There are too many other great Thai restaurants in Charlottesville to tolerate this kind of non-existent customer service. At the very least, tell customers if you are expecting a long wait time instead of just ignoring that people are sitting and waiting for over an hour to get any food!! My recommendation is Monsoon Thai and Pineapples and those are the places I will spend my money for Thai food and recommend to my friends and colleagues. I have been watching this space transform from a furniture store into a Thai restaurant over the past few weeks and was excited to see it open. They are still waiting on their ABC license but that is to be expected with a new restaurant and I'm sure they will have it soon. My friend & I shared the appetizer sampler platter which had a little bit of each appetizer they offer and was very yummy. The dumplings were delicious! I got green curry with chicken & my friend had the red curry. They were large portions and perfectly spicy. Pad Thai with tofu, was really good! It wasn't overly or underly flavored from what other Thai places normally do with their pad Thai. We also ordered the papaya salad, and that was mediocre. Or perhaps their take on the papaya salad isn't what I was hoping for, it seemed more on the extra healthy side. Overall, I would come back here again and try the rest of their menu. read more

Was pleasantly surprised by our experience at Chang Thai. The interior is charming and unique for Charlottesville as there's both upstairs and ground floor seating. We were seated in the upstairs area, surrounded by large windows, overlooking 29. I also noticed how clean and organized the restaurant was. Our waitress was knowledgeable when we asked her for peanut free entree recommendations and our food came out in a timely manner and was flawless and delicious. We got the green curry with chicken and I thought the balance of creaminess from the coconut milk and the spices was perfect. Our server recommendation was the beef pad kapow and it did not disappoint. The beef was tender and I felt like the sauce wasn't too overpowering and paired well with the jasmine rice. FRESH, friendly, and flavorful Thai! Very CLEAN restaurant and CLEAN glassware / dinnerware (this stood out for me after a recent experience with dirty glasses in DC). First time and would definitely comeback! They are still a new place, so please be mindful and have patience if it takes a while. However, you can tell that they are working as fast as possible. With just one person taking orders, the service is actually very quick and amazing! I recommend placing a reservation because it is quite popular. Even if you don't, you get seated within 15-30 minutes depending on the day. Ordering to go is fastest of them all, but I would recommend sitting in at least once. Beautiful decorations, music, and service! Seating on the main floor and upstairs! As for food, delicious! Big servings and seasoned well! The food is awesome. Atmosphere is great too. The restaurant is super popular and brand new, which seems to be putting considerable pressure on the staff. The food might take a little (ok a lot) extra time, but I think it's worth it and it's nice to just chat with friends. But don't arrive starving. I suggest sitting downstairs if you can, but upstairs is cute too. Very reasonably priced and great big portions. read more

My friend and I ordered the appetizer platter, papaya salad, drunken noodles, and kapow crispy pork belly to share. I wish the if you like ordering a lot of small things, I think that getting the appetizer platter as a meal would even work! There's a lot of tofu and other items such as the bikini shrimp, curry puffs and more that could definitely fill you up. The papaya salad was smaller than expected and had a strong fish sauce flavor which we liked a lot. The drunken noodles had a nice kick though not as much protein as I was expecting. I'm not the best with spice and it was manageable for me. Lastly we had the kapow crispy pork belly. I wasn't expecting a thickly battered pork belly but that's what we received. The sauce had already began to soften the fried pork belly so it was not crispy at all by the time it reached out table. I was a little bummed considering this was a special but the sauce had a great spicy flavor and paired well with the rice. Overall the other dishes were great, I was just a bit bummed by the pork belly one. I would come back to try other menu items! read more

Wow, we came from Philly where there are a lot of Thai and other Southeast Asian options. This place has amazing flavors and large portions. We got kanom jeeb, crying tiger, kua kai, pattaya noodle and panang curry, all very good. No misses here. The restaurant is also set up very nice and is nice enough for dates. read more
