We ate here last night. We split a chicken Pad Thai and an appetizer simpler platter, thinking we wouldn't eat too much. It was still too much. The appetizer platter had four spring roles, four deep fried tofu pieces, two dumplings, and what seemed to be a curry samosa (or a Thai equivalent of it). That and the large portion of Pad Thai left us pretty full. The food is good, the service excellent, the staff friendly. I'd definitely eat here again. read more

I came here to dine with my mom and was welcomed with friendly and fast service. The restaurant is super cute and comfy inside. There were a few other people yet it didn't feel crowded and I didn't feel rushed. The food came out quickly and was hot. All the food my mom and I ordered was delicious, they even gave us a spice tray! This is one of my new favorites for sure, I will be back! read more

I think I was harsh in my previous review. I decided to try delivery from here last night to see how they were doing since the place seems generally busy. While not as good as its predecessor restaurant, it was decent, and delivery was really quick. I also had a Thai iced coffee that I enjoyed. It wasn't a massive portion especially for a dinner, and I stand by my comments about somewhat muted flavors (could maybe fix this by ordering spicier but I prefer the flavors to speak for themselves) but I was ultimately satisfied. I'm interested to see if their service issues have improved, but I think this place is fairly dependable if you're hungry but don't need to be wowed. read more

If you miss Tara Thai, make your way over to Chang Thai for some good eating! (Same owners, new name) We dined in on a Friday night and were able to be seated without a wait at 6:30pm - though the restaurant filled up quickly afterwards. For our family of five we ordered the beef num tok (super spicy but awesome), tom yum soup (eh, just ok), crispy duck basil (delicious), and pad thai (always a hit with the kids). Items are on the pricey side but portions at least are sizable! They also do a lot of take out! read more

I would return here in a heat beat. This was a great meal. The flavors were so good and the ingredients very fresh. The the service was polite and attentive. The time that I ate there it was only me and a twosome in the restaurant, so it was quiet and peaceful. Wonderful food, I want to eat this again, but I don't live near here. read more

Typical tasty Thai food. Yes it's a little greasy but so is most thai food, especially the noodle dishes. The taste is on point, i'm taking off a star because service in the restaurant was very slow. Took almost an hour for our food to come out, and also it's very similar to Silk Thai or Monsoon Siam in terms of tastiness but Silk Thai is cheaper. read more

In my memory this is the closest I could get to the tastes of local Bangkok restaurants! Friendly and efficient service. Their Mango curry is unbelievably delicious. Tofu triangles and the sauce are a great high protein start crisp on the outside creamy on the inside. I found myself in town yesterday (2/9) and asked Yelp to help me find some Thai. Now Charlottesville is not hurting for a variety of cuisines. Among them, are several very good restaurants of Asian cuisine. When I came across this restaurant's entry and the several recent five star ratings, I felt challenged because I am one of those people who does not give top ratings for perfection, unless what I am rating is perfect. Long story short, I decided to resist the temptation to try a new dish, and ordered a dish with which I am very familiar -- I have eaten Pad Kee Mao (it's never been an inhibitor so far ) hundreds of times locally, and across the country. Beginning with the wonton soup, led me on a journey of rich broth, fresh wonton, and other goodies in a bowl of pure love. This was not your normal chicken stock and one wonton cup, often used as a vehicle for crispy wonton strips, that just got thawed out kind of soup, this was a soup that has been nurtured and balanced, and, a joy to eat! I was not quite prepared for the beauty and amount of drunken noodles that was served to me in a remarkable timeframe. And again, this is not a plate full of slippery rice noodles in an ambiguous sauce, often masked by overuse of chilies and other flavor enhancers. My protein was chicken, which was beautifully cooked, tender, and flavorful. The noodles tasted fresh and I am curious whether they make their own noodles in-house. Drunken noodles got its name as a late night dish in Thailand whose heat and spice is enough to sober one up enough to get you home. I do like spicy food, but I do not like food that is spiced beyond flavor enhancement. this was perfect and to me, perfect is when my nose begins to loosen up, but does not run. It was incredible. Did this lunchtime delight deserve a five star rating?? No!!! As an homage to the movie, This is Spinal Tap, I would give this dish on that day a SIX-star rating! I can't wait to go back! For a location that changes businesses every 3 years, I hope this one stays! Highly recommend making a reservation because this place was BUSY, so wait times were a little long, especially with one waiter on duty. We ordered mango curry and cashew chicken (both came with rice) and an appetizer of crying tiger. The portions with the rice are definitely enough to share, and for the quality of food and amount we got, we got a bang for our buck. Compared to Pineapple Thai (also in CVille), this place gives you just as much food for half the price. This will probably become our go-to spot for family visits. read more

I do love Thai food, and I was excited to try another local Charlottesville Thai restaurant. The interior decor was very cute and my friend and I were seated immediately. The service was fast and I soon had their mango curry with chicken in front of me. The curry itself was pretty flavorful and the portion size was fantastic - could've been two meals if I wasn't so hungry! I will say that I had ordered it with the maximum spice level (5) and was very underwhelmed as it tasted as if there was no real spice at all which is something I usually appreciate from a Thai place. My friend and I ended up splitting the rice, which was a nice touch to the meal. I would love to try this place again, especially if a little more spice could be added. read more

We decided to try something different while traveling through Charlottesville, and came across Chang Thai in a search result. As of this review, the place is fairly new, and is apparently an off-shoot of a place previously called Tara Thai. First thing we noticed through the windows upon reaching the new location is that it was busy. We took that as a good sign. Stepping inside, we were greeted by an airy, modern, but warm atmosphere. Being new, the place is very clean. Staff was very friendly and helpful. I ordered the Kanom Jeeb as an appetizer, and specialty Mango Curry based on the hostess' recommendation, and was not disappointed! The food was hot, delicious, and came out fairly quickly. Unfortunately, I started inhaling the food before I realized some pictures might be handy. At least I got one of the Fried Banana and Ice Cream dessert. Prices were very reasonable, and while I eat big portions, I think everything I ordered was enough to share with another person. Will definitely visit again! read more

Yes! Chang Thai gets a thumbs up! Tom Kha soup is delicious!! We also had Calamari, chicken satay and Thai Iced Tea. All very good. The restaurant is smaller inside than it appears from the outside, but it is very cozy and nicely decorated. Service was friendly and efficient. Parking in the private parking lot is limited, so keep that in mind if you are visiting at a peak time. read more

We decided to give Chang Thai a try as the reviews and food looked great. Well I have to say the Pho Soup with pork was spot on. My hubby had the pineapple fried rice, he said it was perfect. We had the Kanan-Jeb (sp) dumpling appetizer. The dinner portions were large and came to our table in a reasonable amount of time and nice and hot. Our server Bennie was fantastic along with the gentlemen co-worker. This is now my fav Thai place to dine. read more

We had just gotten to Charlottesville and was hungry from our 2+ hour road trip. Thai food was on my mind and this place was close to our hotel. The building itself looked unique and they had a second floor for seating. We started off with the thai iced teas which were very refreshing. Our appetizer was the Kanom Jeeb which were like shumai dumplings with this AMAZING brown sauce. It was delicious! Our two entrees were the crispy basil duck and pad see eaw noodles. I love duck and this has got to be some of the best duck I've had. Best part about it was that it was boneless! Their pad see eaw was amazing as well, my favorite Thai noodle dish. They did not disappoint, and as you can see we destroyed all of it. The reason why I left out a star was because they did not offer us dessert after our meal. Other than that, this will be one of our to go spots for Thai food in Charlottesville! read more

I have been going here for years now and don't think I will go back. I walked in and the waitress abruptly told me I couldn't sit down (there wasn't anyone else waiting) until I knew how many people were coming with me. I wasn't sure if my friend was bringing their spouse or not. After being able to sit down, it was all downhill from there. They first served me Chicken Satay that was so salty I couldn't eat it. Then, the fried egg I wanted on my Pad Thai, they brought out separately on a plate. Weird. Next, they brought out my friend's dish and not mine. We waited and waited. Food never came as time kept going by. 40 min. later still did not get my main dish. They tried to give me two different dishes that were someone else's dishes. Finally, mine came and my friend was almost done eating. He had to eat really slowly. It was really watered down. I took it home and threw it away. No thanks. There are many Thai Restaurants in town. There was simply just a lack of authenticity in my opinion due to the fact that I thought I could make better pad Thai at home. Phenomenal is an understatement. I've tried plenty of Thai in the area and NONE compare to chang Thai. Never had better food in my life. Chef Joe puts so much into his meals. Small establishment that seats about 28 people at tables and booths with four more seats at the bar. Tried the Crying Tiger appetizer which was delightful. A little heat, bold flavor, nice portion, and great presentation. Flavor was very good. Teriyaki-like but more. Regrettably I did not take a photo of it before I ate it. Had the drunken noodles for an entree. Definitely more heat to it; a medium heat nicely balanced with the flavors of the dish, not overpowering. Very disappointing visit. Our order was taken and no water brought. The two people waiting tables stepped outside and engaged in what appeared to be an argument with arms flailing and angry faces, lots of words. The young male waiter had taken our order. It was delivered later by the female waitress as the male had left. The order was for two orders of Drunken Noodles both with soft / steamed tofu one also with chicken. When the orders arrived one had soft tofu and the other had deep fried tofu. no chicken. No one checked on us. At some point after we had finished eating (we shared the steamed tofu. No one ate the fried tofu) the male waiter returned and brought us our check. We asked about the chicken he said chicken was $3 extra and walked away. Overpriced and underserved. read more

Was a favorite when first opened but now the service is awful! After waiting 15 minutes for a table and another 15 minutes for a server and water....our food took over 1 hour to be brought out. Empty tables in the upstairs dining room were full of dirty dishes and leftover food for the entire 2 hours we were there! It's gross to be eating in an environment that feels dirty and ignored. The issue seems to be they prioritize take out over dine-In customers. Literally saw more food go out the door than being served to diners. There are too many other great Thai restaurants in Charlottesville to tolerate this kind of non-existent customer service. At the very least, tell customers if you are expecting a long wait time instead of just ignoring that people are sitting and waiting for over an hour to get any food!! My recommendation is Monsoon Thai and Pineapples and those are the places I will spend my money for Thai food and recommend to my friends and colleagues. I give this a 2.5. We waited for 55minutes to get our food after having reservations. We used to go the previous restaurant they owned and the food was amazing. Unfortunately this time my pad Thai was bland. My husbands Crispy Chicken special was delicious. We sat by the door and everyone picking up orders was standing next to us. It felt crowded. I'm sad because there old restaurant was my favorite place, and I don't think we will be back again. read more
