An easy to miss, low key vibes (#1) Thai eatery along a stretch in the main strip SE McLaughlin, Chang Thai was not my initial first Thai choice (#2) in this area. But unlike the other spot, it was open, not busy, and provided one of the most stellar experiences I've had in a long time. The interior is surprisingly spacious, in that they could afford many more seating options, but have elected to have the seats spread far apart. The vibe is hardly pretentious and has the feel of a family owned and operated spot. One of the initial recommendations was their red curry with peanut sauce and it didn't disappoint. There was a bit of heat and plenty of flavor with every bite. The pad see yu was excellent, had good texture, and was almost too easy to eat. Another highlight was their wings, which were juicy and very fresh. Their larb salad was refreshing and had just enough sourness from the vinegar for it to be among the favorites in our group. Washing it all down with some excellent Thai iced teas was a perfect capper. So good that I ordered another round. Customer service is very warm and familial. They were excellent about bringing out the food and making fabulous recommendations. While I had another place in my sights, I feel so fortunate to have come across this spot. If you're looking for one of the best Thai restaurants around, Chang Thai is it! Starting with the service, phenomenal! The woman working is always so friendly and has now memorized what my daughter usually get. We usually go for the Woon Sen Soup, my daughter getting a smaller bowl and the gyoza. We also tried the crab fried rice, beef pad see ew and larb salad. Each and everything we have tried has been fantastic and loaded with the perfect amount of flavor and spice. This little gem is hidden off McLoughlin Blvd. My sister and I went here since the other place I wanted to try was closed. The place was open and inviting. We were greeted and told we could sit anywhere. We looked over the menu and everything looked so good! I ordered fresh salad rolls with peanut sauce (made in house, not from a jar) and spring rolls. I've now been here about six times and it's always been impeccable. So delicious, even tho I ordered my food via door dash the last two days I've been stuck at home sick and this place looked yummy because the PHO with the rice noodles sounded good on my throat. That cuisine has some really great shape offerings and dinner last night was a great example. I had the lemon grass chicken salad, requesting 3 on their 0-6 level of heat. The chicken was very tasty - marinating in lemon grass and then serving it with a lime based dressing that is both sweet and spicy was terrific. I relished every bite, making sure that I included some of the dressing every time. The chicken was served hot having just been grilled, playing that off the cool salad was a symphony of flavors, textures, temperatures and tastes that was truly delightful. The wife had their lemongrass chicken Phad Thai, one of the specials for the night. (0 out of 6 for heat). It was also quite tasty even though I felt the chicken wasn't quite as moist or flavorful as mine. It was served with a generous amount of very tasty peanut sauce. I would have preferred it with some more spice however the wife liked it just as it was served. Perhaps because of the lack of heat, the lemongrass didn't come through nearly as it did on mine. We also sampled the egg roll and pot sticker appetizers. Really fresh and hot, the fish sauce was light and sweet. While that was a great sauce for the egg roll I would have preferred a more traditional sauce for the potstickers. This was one of the very few times I've been out to eat and felt the staff was too casually dressed. I don't think sweat pants and a t-shirt (even with their logo) was appropriate. So, during this pandemic, I've ordered delivery twice from here. Each time getting the chang fried rice with pork gluten free. First time I got it, it was delicious. Second time, was ok. There was an odd flavor like fish sauce or something like that to the tomatoes and some of the pork. Not a fan. I still ate it, but would prefer the first time experience over the second. Also on the second experience, I ordered an original milk tea with boba. The tea was amazing. I could have drank a gallon of it. The boba, way under cooked. There were ones that were so hard in the middle that it seemed like I was eating raw boba. I will give this place another try and hope things are more like the first go. Haven't been giving YELP reviews lately as people get bent out of shape if a not-so-favorable review is left. They forget that this a "review" platform. I have ordered food here many times as it's in close proximity to my work. I have also had a work gathering here. Not once, even with our group of 10, have I EVER experienced a friendly greeting or service from any of the staff there. Seem to be a bunch of salty ladies which could use a lesson on good customer service. Their portions are small and, if ordering anything with shrimp, they use the small shrimp (smaller than 16/20) and are stingy with the qty. Gave up with the sour puss customer service and tried THAI SMILE just a couple of blocks down the road. Hands down such a lovely experience EVERY time. THAI SMILE has very friendly staff AND EXTREMELY delicious food with good sized portions and good quality ingredients. THAI SMILE is the best choice in that area. If you're in the SE Hawthorne area, THAI FARMHOUSE KITCHEN is the place to go. Don't pass that one up!! The food is great, it was just annoying when ordering my take out Chicken Pad Thai, I would pay different amounts depending on the cashier. The man always charged Me $15, but the woman would charge me 16-17 to give herself a tip. At first I never noticed, but I did after the man had started working more. The noodles glommed together because it was laden with sauce, missing authentic Pad Thai ingredients . There was no strips of egg, and then! only 8 bean sprouts, 5 small shrimp, a half a leaf of basil and hardly any scallions and a tiny tiny amount of crushed peanuts in a corner. I was charged $17 for this inauthentic, deplorable boring and intentional below the belt stripped down sad & cruel excuse for Pad Thai. If they would have been so kind to make it properly, the variety & right amount of ingredients would have helped to separate the all stuck together noodle mound. I notice way too many Chinese items on the menu. If you know Thai food, this is not your place (and they misspell and don't have a lot of authentic Thai items, so you know it is not authentic. read more

Frog Thai is my local Thai joint, so the quality bar is set pretty high, but with all the great Yelp reviews, I had to check this place out. My husband and I ordered beef with broccoli and a lemon grass chicken salad. While we waited, we observed three other occupied tables on a Friday night. The place is cozy and tidy, with nice booths and attentive service. Our server definitely chatted us up, talking about the business and in inviting us to come back for take-out service. The food was disappointing, though. The salad had all the bright, spicy, citrusy flavors I'd expect, but the chicken wasn't fresh. I suspect it was from a frozen ground chicken patty. That's what the weird texture suggested anyway. The beef and broccoli was just sad. Not bright green as you'd expect, but over cooked and grayish green. And the beef was just tiny shredded bits that looked leftover from something, with no real pieces to speak of. They need to get their proteins together to capture my interest, but I might make a second visit to try them at lunch. And for real humor value, check out the crazy-ass arrows in the parking lot! This one has changed names, changed owners and changed appearance about three times in the past year. So, by the time you're reading this something may have changed already. Call ahead to make sure it's still open and still operating under the same name. This one is called Chang Thai. It has all the usual Thai offerings. The new decor gives it more of a restaurant feeling. Booths are nicely remodeled. The food was more authentic than most. Meaning there is some heat in everything. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and flavor. Then a seemingly Thai elderly woman popped out of the kitchen said something in what sounded like it could be Thai and popped back in. My point being Grand Ma is in the kitchen. Get there while you can because grand mom's don't skimp on flavor. We have gone to Chang Thai for years and we love it. We are nearly a weekly customer. They always say they miss us if we skip a week. Their food is always AWESOME. Talk about large, delicious servings -- TRY THE SALMON FRIED RICE -- it's huge with big pieces of Salmon. We always end up with leftovers for all of the servings - we always get a second meal out of a dish. Their menu is extensive, food is fresh and always GREAT! I read the comment from Kim T about the unfriendly server. The staff there are all great. I think the server she is talking about is not outgoing but not unfriendly. She just tends to her work and she speaks excellent English. Some places make it real oily and salty, but this was neither. My preference is for a lighter fried rice, and the meal I got here tonight was perfect. The staff is always real nice, too. This was a new find for me off Yelp. I am happy to report that the other reviews were spot on, which unfortunately is not always the case. I had the lunch special Pad Kee Mao which was a savory dish as I do not like sweet entrees. Had lots of goodies in it like chicken (although you can specify your protein) bean sprouts, mushrooms onions, wide rice noodles, tomatoes (which were very green ) fresh ground chilies and bell peppers. It really hit the spot! The server was pleasant and the place was nice and clean. Seemed to be a very popular place for takeout. The prices here seemed reasonable until we got our food and realized the quality was poor for the price. The fried squid rings were mostly breading with breaded carrots and just a few pieces of squid. The sashimi was not consistent and did not seem particularly fresh or flavorful. The eel nigiri lacked sauce or flavor. The chicken fried rice didn't have much chicken in it. The eel roll was more avocado than anything. The sushi rice was too sticky and mushy. And sadly the JB roll, a simple standard roll, was the best of anything we ordered. This was made even worse by the fact we'd ordered through GrubHub and the food was 30 minutes late, and arrived with soggy squid rings, lukewarm rice and questionable sushi temps. Perhaps the food is better in the restaurant but considering the lackluster ingredients and minimal amount of key things like actual squid in your squid... I doubt it. read more

The girl behind the counter was a bit direct, terse and unenthusiastic about me waking in. Additionally, the food was adequate, but didn't meet my expectations given the price I paid for it. I ordered Pad-Thai and green curry with chicken and a order of satay chicken. The satay chicken was very over cooked and dry, the Pad-Thai was short on flavor and the green curry was just okay.
