To my knowledge Dr. Chang had moved to a different office on Mendocino Avenue maybe 5 years ago. Then was informed he wasn't there few years later. He performed my foot surgery, small dorsal bunion. Procedure was fine but think finish work could have prevented some scarring. He's not a plastic surgeon but still think technique could have been better. At time of my procedure he was part of an office with other doctors so fully staffed, they were fine. read more

My husband is 3 days post op from an Achilles procedure with Dr. Chang. We love roughly 2 hours away from Santa Rosa, which was a bit nerve wrecking. However the process couldn't have been smoother. The surgery was on time at Healdsburg District Hospital, the post op nurse Debby was a delight and even called the day after to check in. Dr. Chang called us the evening we got home and even today to see how it was going. I've never experienced that level of care from a physician. His bedside manner alone is priceless. #155 I am not sure why I did not write this review sooner, but someone just reminded me of a past foot (or feet) injury and that got me thinking of how grateful I am to Dr. Tom Chang. A few years ago, my mom and aunt were visiting me from Atlanta to accompany me to my Master's graduation. As we pulled into a gas station to refuel, I jumped out of the car to pay for the gas before they could, and my mother saw me limping as I ran. Quite worried, she asked me about my feet. My father is a podiatrist so my parents have always paid attention to my feet. I shared with her that I was having troubles running and wearing heels all of a sudden. She called my dad immediately and they decided to find me the best California had to offer in podiatrists (my dad is not only all the way in the ATL, but also--if needed--he cannot operate on me). Enter Dr. Tom Chang... I remembered Dr. Chang from when I was a tiny little girl. My dad led the surgery team at his hospital and taught all the resident surgeons/podiatrists; therefore, I knew all his "students." When my mother asked if I remembered Dr. Chang, immediately I was like, "Yes!" So that was it, we arranged an appointment and that's where my foot drama began. Interestingly, she shared with me that Dr. Chang was following in my dad's footsteps as the resident teacher and lecturer. #impressive Dr. Chang is so patient and kind. He was gentle and explained everything that was going to happen once we figured out I needed some major surgery to correct my foot (feet). He said I would need several months off work (and school) and could I handle it? He also explained to me that I would have to have multiple surgeries, as I simply could not do both feet at the same time. Well, I am such a busy girl, I knew it would be tough, but I really wanted to get back into running long distance, so I was game for the surgeries--yes, surgeries. Dr. Chang treated me with the utmost kindness and respect. He was super informative and would always tell my partner what to expect and how to take care of me. He would ask me about my dad and make sure I was healing properly. If I was ever in pain, he would make sure to help ease those issues with medicine, physical therapy and simply just listening to me cry and complain. After two feet surgeries, a lot of healing, tons of pain meds and a lot of TLC, Dr. Chang completely rebuilt my terrible feet and made them pretty and functional. Thank you so much Dr. Chang. Hello. If you are facing the prospect of surgery to your foot or ankle, your search should end here with Dr. Thomas Chang. Cutting to the chase, his surgical skills are unparalleled, he is a great listener and gives knowledgeable and wise counsel borne of extensive experience. He has a great support team and my experience at the Sutter Surgery Center in Santa Rosa was excellent. If good patient care means caring for and about the patient, you have found your doctor. I recommend him without reservation. If your problem is a hammertoe severe enough to require surgery (mine was), and you are open to unsolicited advice, you might want to read further. My search for a doctor brought me to Dr. Chang for a second opinion after the first doctor I spoke with made clear, without saying so directly, that the necessary reconstructive procedure was beyond him, and that he could not guarantee a satisfactory result. He suggested removing the toe. Dr. Chang agreed with the complexity of the surgery, promised that he could improve the condition, and gave me three options: 1) Do nothing, or 2) have him reconstruct the toe with a promise of improvement but no assurance of a return to complete normalcy and a rather extended period of recovery, or 3) remove the toe with the promise of a short, easy recovery and complete satisfaction with the outcome. He sent me away to decide. In hindsight, what should have been an easy decision was hard, made hard by some combination of vanity, superstition, a sense that this was an "extreme" intervention, etc. Long story short(er), he removed my toe three days ago, and I'm delighted. I walked out of the surgery center, there has been little discomfort, I'm walking around the house (albeit on the heel of my foot) and expect to return to normal very soon. For me, happily, my health and comfort eclipsed my vanity and superstitions. Best of luck to you read more

I had Dr. Chang do surgery on my left foot and ankle and he did an incredible job. I actually pushed the surgery off as I was nervous with what it entailed. I was fortunate to talk to another patient who had the same procedure done who was extremely helpful on what to expect and by letting me know some of the things that I was going to need to help me get through it. I then set up another appointment and had the surgery done. Dr. Chang and his entire staff are awesome, kind and friendly. They have always made themselves available for all concerns and questions no matter how many I had. They are the best. read more

Once again Dr. Chang is amazing!!! He did surgery on my left ankle 5 years ago and now I just had bunion surgery on my right foot! Dr Chang operated on my foot one week ago. My foot had been bothering me over the past year or more and was causing me to slow down exercising and standing too long due to pain. I was also "rolling" my ankle outward when I was walking unexpectedly causing me to be unsteady and fall. The first Dr that looked at it took a std series of ankle X-rays and told me there was nothing wrong. It continued to hurt and get worse, but the pain was intermittent based on how much I did. I was finally referred to Dr Chang. Within 2 appointments he figured out the source of my problem that no one else could. This man knows feet! Dr. Chang is the surgeon's surgeon. When my highly regarded specialist in Marin County saw that I had ruptured my posterior tibialis tendon and needed a complicated repair which including fusing two bones and lengthening the achilles tendon (gastrocnemius release), he immediately referred me to Dr. Chang. "Dr. Chang is the top guy for hind foot surgery, and he lectures and teaches other doctors around the country his technique. He also has helped develop the hardware used in this procedure. Well, Dr. Chang saw me the next day after my injury and gave me my options. Since I wanted to get back to normal activity and high impact activity, I chose surgery. I was on a very tight schedule and was hoping to get back to work the next week. So he reassured me I would not have much pain from this procedure and could get around with a knee stroller and crutches with my cast on after surgery. He also worked me into his schedule by working late (6:00-9:00pm) so that I could get out of pain and start healing. He did an incredible surgery and I had no real pain and did not need any of the pain meds. I showed up for a scheduled appointment with Dr. Chang, but I cannot review the quality of his medical care because I was not allowed to see him. Although the office accepts my insurance, he refused to see me because I would not sign a binding arbitration agreement stating that I have no right to sue in a court of law should something go wrong with my surgery. I have never sued anyone in my life and hope I never will. However, taking away a person's right to do so when justified is wrong. Corporations will argue that binding arbitration is necessary to prevent frivolous lawsuits, but studies have shown that it actually protects the corporations and reduces individual rights.Thus, I am not receiving needed medical care because Dr. Chang is more interested in protecting his corporation. read more
