I have lived in several large cities over the years, most recently Chicago for 10+ years, and Chan's food is among my wife and my favorite. The family is always very helpful, and kind and their food is really good. Am not sure what would have prompted the negative reviews in the past, because their food is great, from a flavor, portion and consistency stand point. This is hands down the worst Chinese food we have ever eaten. New to the area, we were hoping for delivery but the driver wasn't in for another hour. I picked it up. We ordered four different entries and all were uneatable. The beef and deep fried chicken had all been made ahead of time and then REHEATED!! All the breading was soggy. The only thing we ate was the egg roll with was mostly breading--but at least had been made fresh. We will never eat there again. No one was in the restaurant, regardless of it being located on a busy downtown street--go figure! read more

When it comes to American-Chinese food, Chan's Garden is on high-average end of quality. It is on par with most Chinese food joints you'll find in the midwest. If you've not gotten a taste of proper Chinese food (in a Chinatown restaurant or overseas), this is a good bet. I am a big fan of the honey-garlic chicken from Chan's, and I readily admit craving it regularly. The crab rangoons are nice as well, though I usually shake out most of the filling (not a huge fan of gobs of crab/cream cheese). The rangoons are especially good when dipped in the sauce from the honey-garlic chicken. Altogether a good choice if you're craving American-Chinese food and don't want to drive to Chicago or beyond. ;) read more

No, just no. Don't try it. We went in at 3:30 for a late lunch. Lunch time was over for the restaurant, which is understandable. I asked if they had dinner combos. I was told no, combos at end 3:00. I asked for the bills for our drinks. Suddenly, voila a menu with dinner combos. The portions were tiny, about six small pieces of soggy battered chicken, bland sauce, and maybe a cup of rice. The egg rolls literally dripped oil. Despite the minuscule portion, three of us did not finish the two meals that were swimming in oil. We laughed about it all day yesterday and today too. A pretty standard Chinese spot, conveniently located downtown. It's very cheap and pretty quick, with delivery/take out and decent combos. I'm not sure it's better than China Garden down on Hilltop, but for a 30 minute in/out lunch, it does just fine. read more

Used to be our go to for Chinese cuisine. After tonight's order we'll be looking elsewhere. 75$ with tip, just six months ago it was 50$ with tip and we got twice the food and condiments. Crab Rangoon sucked, wontons were crap, egg rolls ehh, fried shrimp was good. Their Curry beef used to be delightful, tonight however I'd of been better off making it myself. Got takeout last night, I stay very close. Floor was extremely dirty, like beyond belief. I waited about fifteen minutes for kung pao pork and crab Rangoon. Rangoon was fine, but the pork was awesomely seasoned and the array of different veggies was very nice. Great for a late bite, not a date. Food good, atmosphere atrocious. read more

Great food at a great price! We stopped in for lunch while in the area. We really enjoyed the food. Normally boring things were extra good. The fried rice was well spiced and the hot tea was flavorful! Oh, and the fried crab ragoons, wow, very good. They were also very nice and checked on us often, even with a busy lunch crowd. Since moving to Chicago, I really miss this place! Every time I'm visiting my mom in St.Joseph, I'm always sure to make it to Chans. The staff is friendly, it's really quiet in there, and the price is super reasonable for the amount of food. The music is super cheesy, that's my only complaint! read more

How is this place in business? Unsanitary practices and a long wait drove us out even before we got our food.

We've been looking for a decent chinese restaurant in this area for two years and it's been hit or miss. We loved the atmosphere in Chan's and they have a great variety of choices on their menu. We really enjoyed the soups (Won Ton, Hot & Sour and Egg Drop) and the egg rolls were crispy and served with a really delicious sweet & sour sauce. We ordered one of their specialty dishes and asked for pan fried noodles with it instead of rice - most places over cook the noodles or they are soaked in oil but Chan's were perfect! The Mongolian Beef was very good too. The food was served piping hot and with a smile - we really enjoyed our first visit to Chan's and will be regulars if the experience is the same next time. read more

Looks like your typical run of the mill chinese restaurant. The food was really just not very good. We had Mongolian beef and curry chicken and both were rather bland and lacking in any depth of flavor. i guess it was better than the chinese food that I had out of the chun king can that my mom served us as kids way back when, but not dramatically so.... Not a fan of this place. The egg drop soup & wonton soup were good; however, the rest of it was pretty bad. The crab rangoons were very greasy and unflavorful. The general tso's chicken was bland and they tried to spice it up with ground black pepper instead of chili peppers. The house special lo mein had all the right ingredients, but again the flavor was lacking. The beef & broccoli was better than the chicken & lo mein, but still not very good. It had a ton of greasy sauce and the broccoli was not fresh at all. We won't be ordering from this place again. read more

I always love eating there, not that I eat there much, but I still love it. The staff are super friendly! The food is quickly produced and taste pretty good. The prices are reasonable, if I do say so myself. I had Mongolian beef with fried rice, an egg roll, and soda for $6. Everything was very well proportioned that I had more than enough to go home and eat it again for dinner, and when I reheated it, the food's flavor somehow got better. (My microwave just might have magic in it) Overall, I would recommend this restaurant to anyone, especially PGA tourist when they visit again! read more

My husband and I love this place! The food is excellent, the service impeccable, and the atmosphere is cozy. We have tried quite a few items on the menu and haven't had a bad one. I especially love their Won Ton soup, any of the soft noodle dishes, and my husband is a fan of their beef pepper steak. We have eaten at many Chinese restaurants when we travel, but are always glad that our favorite one is located within a reasonable driving distance of our home. Besides the great food, the management and staff are welcoming and efficient. Lastly, unlike many Chinese restaurants, the ambience is conducive to having a relaxed, pleasant conversation with a fantastic meal in the beautiful downtown district of St. Joseph, MI. read more

I got a large order of General Tso's chicken, it was basically just fried chicken covered in brown goop that had no flavor, was not spicy.
