I ordered the beef with broccoli, sweet and sour chicken, pork lo mein, beef fried rice, egg roll, and hot mustard. I liked the fried rice and hot mustard. The beef with broccoli has a good sauce but it was more of a beef with mixed vegetables, not just broccoli. I did not like the sweet and sour sauce, off tasting. The lo mein was ok but I did not like the pork in it. The egg roll was ok. The prices were reasonable. The inside of the place has a weird smell to it, not sure if it is the fish tank or the carpet or something else but it smells like a litterbox in there, something to work on. Per the usual, the Chinese places in this area are fairly average and none of them get it all right. They do take credit cards now. read more

My best friend and I have been loyal customers of Lee's for many, many years! It is truly the most amazing, flavorful Chinese food you'll ever have. We particularly love the egg rolls and pot stickers for appetizers. All the soups are phenomenal & you cannot go wrong with any choice of the meals. As others have mentioned, the building is dated but as you've heard before "you should never judge a book by its cover.." There's something so beautifully nostalgic about walking into a place that has looked the same since the first time ever stepping foot there and being greeted by the same smile on the same owner's face who's putting the same love & energy into what he does day in and day out. Absolute worst food! The white rice was the only thing worth eating. I didn't think you could mess up Orange Chicken and Steamed Dumplings but I was VERY wrong. Picked up the order to go. Owner was rude and the restaurant seating area was filled with old refrigerators and deep chest freezers. I think we counted 16 positioned around the booths. Slightly scary. Ordered dinner Friday. Hot & sour soup, egg rolls, and General Tso (Governor?) Chicken. The hot and sour soup was unlike any other I'd ever had. I think that 80% of ingredients in soup was cabbage. My wife was not happy with me after Flavor was ok, however I do like mushrooms, tofu, and a little meat in my H&S. The egg rolls were standard fare. Don't let the outside fool you - this place is great! [Atmosphere] Plenty seating. Mix of tables and booths. Probably can seat 30-50 people all at once. Very very dated furniture and overall interior. It looks like the same stuff has been used for like decades. So, definitely could benefit from a interior design refresh. By far my fav Chinese restaurant. Looks are far from what's to be expected on the inside. The menu has stayed the same since I was a kid. The prices can not be beat by any means specially at lunch. You get your choice of main, fried rice, egg roll and soup. For about the same as a meal at a fast food restaurant. I have had many of the items in the menu and none have let me down. It's family owned and operated. They are a very sweet couple and very hard working. I have sampled Chinese all over and still prefer lees. The veggie egg rolls are the best. read more

So this was the default Chinese place of my youth, and I hadn't really realized how high it set my standards? Tonight I went back for the first time in a decade. It's really more a takeout place than an eat-in one, these days, despite the availability of seating - you do get some very nice tea eating in, but the service is mostly from the owner, who while very nice is also busy cooking, and it's nothing speedy or elaborate. Set expectations accordingly, or get it as takeout, but the food is worth it anyway. The Governor's/General Tso's chicken (it's listed as both) is the best I've had anywhere, ever - I was sure my memory of it was just nostalgia-tinted, but it wasn't. Rather than the sticky-sweet gloop with some perfunctory broccoli I've gotten used to settling for, it's a thinner sauce (still sweet-hot) with a bit more garlic and vinegar to it, along with a broader range of veggies. The pot stickers are tender with a pan-crisped bottom and excellent sauce - the optimal midpoint between steamed and fried. Don't let the unglamorous setting fool you - this is the best American-Chinese place in southwest MI by a long shot, and better than I've found in bigger Midwest cities as well. read more

Now living in Chicago, meeting EC's family halfway will find us in the St. Joe, MI area every so often. Having grown up here for a bit, EC has raved, RAVED, about the food at Lee's Hunan, particularly the Egg Foo Yung. After a lovely afternoon at the beach, we stopped in here for some reminiscing and dinner. Apparently the menu hasn't changed in over a decade, because the area code is the same as it was pre-universal code change. The entire decor could use an overhaul, but some things of note: It's all in the details: -Great vegetarian options, though in the standard-Chinese-fare way. -Sizeable menu (see point one). -No alcohol. -We fed six people for $55. -Three takeout orders occurred while we were there; only one other sit-down group, and this was on a Saturday night. -Plum sauce for the Moo Shu rocked my world. -Fun sizzling rice soup I haven't seen elsewhere. -Kind wait staff.
