This is a family owned business... We ordered two dishes, all rather flavorful. The orange chicken only had six pieces of chicken in it that were pretty small it was mostly vegetables, which is disappointing. The combo fried rice tasted really good and had a fair amount of meat and shrimp in it. The orange tofu size is very good and they give you the option to either have it fried or grilled, which is an option most other restaurants don't give you. The downsides were that it did take quite a while as they do heat up the grill per customer as to not waste resources, and I did find a very long hair in my food. My husband REALLY loves Chinese Food which is really hard to find in SW Michigan. We really wanted to love this place but were disappointed. The positive is they use fresh ingredients ( no MSG). However, they negative is that the potion of meat in both are dishes ( Mongolian Beef & Orange Chicken) were barely existent. We each had 3 pieces of meat in out dishes. They load the dish sh with veggies to fool ya. They do not take credit cards & no dine in service. Unfortunately, we will not be going again . I ordered the pork soft noodles, beef fried rice, veg with brown sauce, beef with broccoli, an egg roll, almond cookie, and garlic honey chicken. All 4 dishes with meat had almost no meat in them. So, if you just want a ton of vegetables, this is the place for you. I did not like the flavor of the pork soft noodles and the pork was overcooked and dry. Beef was tough. Rice was ok. I did not like the egg roll, thin with almost no filling or flavor, weird. They do make hot mustard. The flavor of most of the food was ok but the meat was basically a garnish, so I was just left with a lot of vegetables. China Garden is not perfect but when you get the bourbon chicken, it is a lot of chicken, enough for 2 days. Cash or check only here still. They do have many flavors of pop in the case. Bland with skimpy protein portions. Grew up eating here as a kid and sad to say, it was the same back then and possibly worse now. Often we order dishes, only to be told when picking up our order that they ran out or aren't serving it anymore. Cannot emphasize how little meat is included, even when the entree is supposed to be just the meat. We only go because it is a 6 minute walk away from our home and we like to support the small business, but especially after this most recent visit, we will try to find another option for American Chinese in this area (though our options are limited regardless.) If it wasn't for Yelp I would never have found this place. There food is delicious, the quality is massive, and the price is very affordable. They have tons of vegetarian options and will ask if you want your tofu fried or not fried. I was surprised that the tofu dishes were mainly vegetables and not just entirely tofu like other restaurants. But their flavors are amazing. I really wanted to like this place, and overall I did: once I got my food. The prices are ok, but there are no combos, which means you need to buy everything a la carte. I got orange chicken which was delicious, and the egg rolls were good. Here's the thing: they are completely under staffed - and sit down customers ALWAYS get first dibs. I placed a take out order, and waited at least 40 minutes while I watched a family of 6 chow down within 10 minutes of getting there. This happened several times. I would also like to point out: CASH ONLY. If there's anything to take away from this review it is that you can only use cash or check. This restaurant is my favorite place to eat in the Stevensville area. They have never let me down as far as quantity or quality goes. The only issue is how long it takes for your food to be ready; often times you order over the phone and are left waiting once you arrive for pickup. However, it has always been worth the wait because the food won't disappoint! If I had to recommend one menu item, I'd recommend ordering the General Tso's here, it's truly unique. read more

did NOT like it here at all. i couldn't even finish my food because it was meh. 1) ordered the "hot and sour soup." i put this in quotes because it is NOT hot and sour soup. it is hot vinegar water with drops of chili oil, shredded carrots, some bamboo shoots, and one shred of chicken. no tofu, no mushroom. did not look anything like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hot_and_sour_soup. i had two spoons' worth and was done. i put it to the side but could still smell the strong vinegar scent wafting about. 2) ordered the spicy hunan tofu dish. the sauce it came in was VERY thick and goopy, and tasted off somehow. in addition to my dish being extremely salty, it had a weird flavor to it. oaky?? it tasted like wood or something. regardless, it was all very soupy, and the portion was meager for the price. came with a side of chewy rice. like others have said, it's cash only. i really wanted to like this place, given the ratings and location, but i was sorely disappointed. so sad. =( oh yeh, and when we came in, all but 2 tables were dirty with used drinking glasses and other undesirables. read more

I love this place. What's so amazing is that they are extremely health conscious. They steam their vegetables instead of frying them in oil. A friend said they don't use any products with GMOs. All the traditional US Chinese items but prepared with care with good fresh ingredients. A family owned and run establishment that has been around as long as I have been in the area (at least 20 years). Without a doubt the best Chinese food in southwestern Michigan. I used to teach ESL in Chicago's Chinatown, so I've had authentic Chinese food quite a bit, and this is on par. Fresh veggies, meals spiced and cooked to order. My family, who lives in Detroit, say that HKK has ruined Chinese food for them, and they always insist on eating at HKK when they visit. My all time favorite (speaking as a gal who loves the combination of savory and sweet) are the Cheese Wontons, with an apricot sweet and sour sauce, or hot (HOT!) mustard if that is your thing. The Peking Pork is amazing. The Roast Pork Appetizer is good for a meal in and of itself, with a helping of steamed rice. The family is from Hong Kong, so their food is more Cantonese than Mandarin, as a few people pointed out, but it is A++. read more

The reviews are accurate, mostly. This is HEALTHY Chinese food, not automat microwave. All veggies are fresh, the meat trimmed, and no artificial anything. They can adjust the spices - ask them - if you want since everything is made fresh and was re-engineered to be low fat. The hot and sour soup is not a dark thick starch soup, but flavorful broth and the required tofu and veggies. Of course the rice dishes are good, but prefer the fresh veggie dishes. Maybe Non Mandarin Entrees The Mo Shu pork I got was more Cantonese taste with plum sauce served aside; was asked served rice or pancakes. The orange beef was sautéed vegetables with few shredded orange skin; vinegary, worst orange beef in my life. The tiny pot stickers were alright. Won ton egg drop soup was sub-par. We had a great meal here tonight. We chose a noodle dish and the chicken with vegetables. Both were very good and tasted homemade, much closer to grandma's comfort food for a cold day than the salt and saturated fat of a stale buffet I often associate with Chinese restaurants. You can still get sweet and sour chicken deep fried, but if you want a meal that leaves you feeling full and well, this is a great choice. While there, several people came in for pick-up orders who knew the owners on a first-name basis. It was nice to see that kind of friendliness in a local restaurant. A father and daughter came in, and after seeing that it was cash-only, said they'd have to go to an ATM.
