I purchased tickets to see a magician/mentalist here and also invited friends who also bought their tickets. The shows were canceled without any notification other than a sign on the door that said that all shows were canceled (Friday and Saturday). We bought tickets for Saturday and the sign was posted for the Friday show. I had folks driving in from Santa Cruz to attend and they were pissed. Checked their website and socials - no notice or announcement. In fact there were posts still promoting the event with a link to buy tickets. We hung outside to figure out alternative plans and saw a ton of people show up who also had no idea that the show was canceled so it wasn't just us. I get that it's a community-led theater but they could at least update us on their socials and website. We were all looking forward to the show because magic shows like this aren't frequent and we wanted to support the theatre. We tried calling the office and got no response. I called about 2 hours after the show was supposed to happen and got someone who was very nice. I was able to get a refund after opting out of the rescheduled show. When I said that I'd rather get a refund because who knows if the rescheduled show will be canceled, the person on the phone kind of chuckled in agreement. I don't plan on purchasing anything here or recommending shows here again. read more

My first introduction to this theater was a few years back when Tickets Bay Area had a free ticket promotion to check out a theater we have never been to and I was lucky enough to get a pair of tickets here. So when I was looking for a play outside of SF this year, I immediately thought of this beautiful and intimate community theater that is only about 15 minutes away from us. It sits about 100 people and is on a first come first served basis. The only issue I had was they almost gave our seats away since we were running 5 minutes late even though we already paid months ago which there was no mention of on the reservation itself. Hopefully that would be something they could avoid doing in the future if it has already been prepaid but luckily, there were still 2 seats left and we were able to catch the play which was Agatha Christie's Unexpected Guest. Very well acted, keeps you guessing until the very end, and the actors even greet you on the way out. Looking forward to seeing another play here soon. read more

After watching the musical version of "The Addams Family", I was surprised how funny and complicated the songs were. Always fun and lively here, it's always a treat to be here. I have watched very serious plays here and a lot of humorous ones. There is a parking lot, the lobby can get very crowded, as you have the snacks during the intermission and both bath rooms. After the intermission, no drinks are allowed back in the seats when you return. After the show, there is a meet and greet just outside the door when you exit. read more

This community theater has been a part of Castrol Valley since 1948 and at its current spot in the park since 1976. The venue is small maybe about 100 seats and the view of the stage seems to be good from all of them I've seen a couple of productions here and was impressed. They were well acted and well staged. The only negative is the bathroom. There are two stalls which is fine. However, only one had a door, the other has a curtain. read more

A musical based on couples and their relationships and their Myers Briggs type indicator inventory types. Charlotte Jacobs and Michael Sally played 5 characters each. They did a great job acting out their characters and epitomizing their MBTI types, Michael has a great, booming voice, Charlotte would project her voice on some of her songs but not on others, the piano overpowered her at times. The theater is older, definately a community theater, 120 seat venue, seats are older and low but decent leg room. Women's bathroom with two stalls was rustic and basic. Around 50 in attendance for this Sunday matinee. They did offer free snacks and drinks at intermission, which was a treat. Located in the suburbs, next to a park and playing field with a small parking lot attached. A ledge to sit on, outside the entrance of the theater and some picnic tables to eat/drink your intermission snacks of juice, coffee and cookies. The staff were all very welcoming and friendly. This is a beautiful, small community theater located in the heart of Castro Valley. They present a full repertoire of five or six productions a year, featuring talent from around the Bay Area. The production values vary depending on the director and the stage crew, but the performances are uniformly entertaining and fun. I love to support local arts and this is one of the most fun and vibrant, because you as an audience member are so close to the stage. They produce comedies, dramas, musicals, and classics. Although I don't have season tickets, I try to get to 2-3 of their performances each year, and have seen some incredible plays here. Among the most memorable were "Brighton Beach Memoirs," "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown," "The Fantasticks," "Deathtrap," "Never Too Late," "You Can't Take it With You," "On Borrowed Time," and "Little Shop of Horrors." Ticket prices can't be beat -- General admission prices range from $13 to $15 (musicals are higher priced), and they offer student/senior discounts that are $2 less. When you attend, they'll give you a $1-off discount coupon for your next show. Dixie Swim Club has'em rolling in the aisles! The Dixes Swim Club opened last night at Chanticleers and was a laugh fest from start to finish. The polished performance from an obviously "together" ensemble cast takes you through the trials and tribulations of five women. From the opening scene to the poignant ending, the laughs just keep coming. A must see show, well worth the price of admission. read more

This is a small theater located in the hills of Castro Valley. It's easy to get to, and parking is close and free. The two times I went were general admission, but I don't know if it is like that for all the plays. There are only about six rows, so you are close to the stage. On the down side, the chairs are not too comfortable. Both plays I saw here were well done. The second time (Death By Design) we saw it opening night, and the actors tended to stumble over some of their lines, but it wasn't bad enough to ruin it. They serve cookies and coffee in the lobby during intermission for donations, so bring a few ones. The volunteers have always been very nice. read more

Just saw the production :The Dixie Swim Club which is a jubilant comedy play about a lifelong friendship of 5 women. The show just opened tonight and for a small theatre I must say they put on quite a fantastic performance. The play chronicals the relationships of 5 women who met during a college swim meet. It covers their relationships over 33 years. I was very impressed by the acting and direction of this small theatre production. One would expect this type of acting professionalism from the Berkeley Rep or ACT. I strongly suggest that people make the trek to this small theatre (seats 100 persons) and view this excellent production. You will not be disappointed!!! PS. It could be compared to the likings of "Same Time Next Year" only with more laughs. Kudo's to the actors, director and crew. It was definietly worth my time. I took a class at Ohlone college where we went to watch plays around the bay area for college credit. Ended up coming here one night and had an exceptional experience. The theatre is very small and personal, but that was a definite plus. I was more drawn into into the play this way! Con: they have an extremely small lobby! What a great little theater hidden in the East Bay! Where else can you drive so little, pay hardly anything, and surround yourself with live music, glorious singing and dancing, and the very me brilliant actors you find on stage in San Jose, Walnut Creek and San Francisco?! It's a little old fashioned, with it's small lobby and inexpensive programs, but the performances are first class and can't be beat. I love this community theatre: great acoustics, every seat is great, parking is no problem, the quality is good, the prices low, and they choose wonderful plays: those that are entertaining to everyone not just theatre afficionados. If you're thinking about going to a movie, you might want to go to a Chanticleers play instead. My favorites to date: Fiddler on the Roof, Brighton Beach Memoirs, I Do I Do, Little Shop of Horrors, Same Time Next Year, and You Can't Take It With You. I'm very excited about what they'll be doing in 2010: Lion in Winter, Arsenic & Old Lace, Broadway Bound (which I believe is Neil Simon's best play and I will be directing) and Gypsy. read more

This is a very cute, teeny-tiny, yet comfortable community theater. I've had mixed experiences attending here. Tonight, I was one of only a few people under the age of 65 in the audience, which was kind of fun. I have previously seen The Spelling Bee, which I loved, Lend Me a Tenor, which I enjoyed, and Jerry's Girls, which I am sorry to say was horrible. Tonight's show was Over the River and Through the Woods. It was cute, funny, and I think I have a crush on Kip Wixson, who played one of the grandfathers. The lead role was over-acted and a little hammy, which unfortunately made it a bit less funny. The oldsters actually played it very well---more genuinely. On a side note, the actress who played the potential love interest wears garish and unflattering make-up which makes her look old and a little scary. It kind of distracted from an otherwise good performance. I noticed a similar make-up issue with her in Jerry's Girls. So, 3/4 good experiences. I'd recommend it. read more

My girlfriend and I went to the opening night Gala of "Moon over Buffalo" last weekend. It was a riot!!! A classic farce with all of its ingredients - mistaken identities, sexual attractions, slamming doors, etc. Although it was opening night and you would expect a stumble or two, the eight cast members were already at the top of their game. The play is by Ken Ludwig who also wrote "Lend Me a Tenor". The Chanticleers did that piece last season - another laugh a minute production and our introduction to this outstanding community theater. The theater is small (no bad seats), they serve punch and cookies at intermission and on opening night, champagne, hot and cold hors d'oeuvres and a terrific sherbert drink. Parking is easy, tickets are affordable. Do yourself a favor and get over there soon. You'll be glad you did. read more

Just saw Dixie Swim Club on Saturday night and was REALLY impressed! The storyline is fabulous-about strong friendships among woman throughout their lives~ with a lot of great humor! The acting is outstanding in this performance at this great little theatre. I very much recommend this production and theatre! Came here to watch "New Wrinkles". It was a bit difficult to see driving at night, but I found the place ok. Very similiar to most community theatres. The musical was lovely, very humorous and entertaining. i would consider returning, except I live a bit far from here. May consider a Sun early show next time. Plenty of parking. read more

Dixie Swim Club -- wonderfully funny show with a great ensemble cast! I went with my family and everyone (men, women, and all ages) found a real connection with the characters and the principal theme of lifelong friendship.
