This is my first review ever. ... I went in around 5pm with my 3yo and we only ordered a side of broccoli and guacamole (and a margarita). The waiter was cold, to say the least. It was as though my presence was inconveniencing him. I had intended to order a side of guacamole, and to be fair, I don't believe I said those words and just ordered "guacamole." But the portions were TINY. The (full size) guac hardly covered the bottom of the plate. When I tried to contest, I was given such a hard time and I even felt that I was being condescended to. I've been coming to this restaurant for four years now. I'd like to say a few words about how clean this place is. Everytime I go there, I can't help but notice how spotless this place is. I'm inlcuding the restrooms (and we all know how nasty public bathrooms can get), as well as the staff. I know a contractor who recently did some work there. He was in and out of the kitchen numerous times. He told me you could "eat off the floor." As a contractor he told me he's been in many restaurant kitchens that were filthy. No so at Chapala, His words were "OVER THE TOP CLEAN." The food speaks for itself. Fresh homemade "real" Mexican food. It is not the garbage you get in those fast food mexican places. Portions are great and the prices are very reasonable. If they have it (this is not on the menu), ask for the Mexican Style Corn-On-The-Cob. This little Mexican restaurant is a small piece of heaven. The atmosphere is casual, but attractive with hand painted frescos gracing the walls. Even of a crowded Saturday night you can still have good dinner conversation without screaming and that is refreshing. What is even better is that the food is out of site. Homemade delicious dishes served fresh and made to order. The guacamole is creamy and flavorful. The chili con carne is out of this world over nachos. The chicken fajitas are resplendent with vegetables and come in a delightful sauce. Everything from the beans, to the rice and everything in between is delicious. The portions are HUGE and you can easily share with a friend. What makes the experience even better is that the staff is so kind and welcoming, always happy to make a recommendation or oblige to special requests. The desserts are even fantastic, my favorite being the fried ice cream I usually bypass this dessert as when I have had it places in the past it was heavy and unapealing. Their take on it is a different story, sweet cream icecrem packed with flaked cereal, fried and then drizzled in honey and topped with whipped cream. It is TO DIE FOR! The drinks here are great as well, strong and well made. Chapala Grill has become a family favorite and we go there at least once a month. The prices are very reasonable, especially since the portions are so large. Came here on a spontaneous date night with my other half. To drink: My boyfriend and I shared a pitcher of margaritas. I've been making margaritas at home for a while now and have become a bit of a snob about it. Tequila, Triple sec, fresh lime juice, Sugar or agave nectar and ice. That's all you need. I assumed a mexican restaurant would follow the same recipe so I was really disappointed when I realized that they use bottled sour mix. That stuff is terrible. We still drank it though because alcohol in any form must not be wasted. Half way through we were pretty toasty so at least I can say they put a decent amount of liquor in there. To eat: He got some sort of combo and I ordered the vegetarian enchiladas. Unfortunately, the waiter and I had some trouble communicating. I thought he was asking me if I wanted beans, cheese, or both so I said both... That's not what he was asking me and lord knows what he thought I meant. I ended up getting 2 ALL cheese enchiladas and one full of steamed vegetables. I almost fell over laughing when I cut into them and saw broccoli and cauliflower florets. I still can't figure out how this happened. Luckily I love cheese and have no problem eating gobs of it as a meal. The food was actually really good considering the situation. I'm sure the tequila and cheap sour mix coursing through my body aided in me enjoying it. Although it was good I have to say that the red sauce reminded me of marinara sauce and I'm almost 100% sure that the cheese was mozzarella. Also, both dishes completely lacked any sort of spice or kick. Maybe they thought cause we were a pair of blancos that we couldn't take it? We eat jalapeños like carrot sticks and bathe most things in hot sauce. I'll keep this in mind if we decide to go back. I think the server knew that my dish didn't come out as i'd expected because he seemed a bit anxious and brought us two shots for free. I have no idea what it was. I was bracing for tequila due to it's golden hue but it tasted more like syrup. Nice gesture though. Boyfriend said his dish was very good as well. All in all we had a pretty good time.
