Lived in town for a few years but only now stopped in for a visit. I came for coffee and to test out the baristas. Two younger guys were working the bar and they proved to be talented baristas and very well informed about their coffee. I arrived shortly after opening and the place was slow, so the guys took the time make an extremely well balanced latte, and engage in intelligent conversation about their different coffees. Today they were serving Coava which I've tried in the past at other places and wasn't particularly impressed with, but these guys pulled some quality shots and had the right milk balance. I'm kind of a fan now that I've seen it can be used well. They also appear to have a large seating area, more than most shops. I'd say this place is 70% coffee shop and 30% book store. Definitely a good place to stop in for enjoyable coffee and a chill environment, with interesting things to read if you stay long enough. read more

After living in Newberg over six months I have decided to commit to Chapters as my favorite coffee shop. The baristas all know what they are doing and take their coffee seriously. You won't get an espresso made as well at any other Newberg coffee shop. Chapters serves Stumptown espresso as well as Coava and Caravan drip coffees. They also have a ton of loose tea options. The space is large and has the best amount of seating available in town. The high ceilings make it feel like less people are on top of you. One of my favorite Sunday afternoon activities is drinking a cortado while reading one of the books from the bookstore side of the shop. While it is the better option in town here are a few things I wish they would do. - Serve pour overs. Loved this place! The baristos were completely entertaining and also make a damn good coffee. According to my husband, my order sounds "high-maintenance." I'll let you be the judge: Nonfat vanilla latte with half the vanilla normally used. Seems pretty easy to me. The baristos assured me that it wasn't high maintenance. Good answer. Extra tips for you both. They also had a good selection of both used and new books, and my husband and I carted off two more for our library . Books, coffee, teas, pastries.... One would think by driving by or walking by and seeing how busy they are all the time, that hey, this must be a good local spot, maybe they have that book I've been looking for or a hot cup of joe on a cool fall day?? I've been in a handful of times, and always left disappointed. The book selection is lame and over priced! The coffee is not up to par, just average, does not leave me wanting to come back for more. I always looked forward to relaxing here with a chai and doing a little reading. Chapters is very much community based and I am sure that is how they are still in business while other shops have come and gone. Chapters is a family-run bookstore that invests a lot of care in its staff, store and customers. The owner cares a lot about the youth in the community, too. This bookstore/coffee house is popular amongst the university crowd, but continues to stay busy even when school is not in session. It is a popular meeting place and a good place to study or just relax on one of the plush sofas. It's also cool to go in and see see artwork displayed from local talent. There's something wonderful that happens when you marry coffee and books. This small, but well stocked bookstore is fantastic. It's quaint and a bit tight, but I have to say that it beats any of the megawannabebookstores. Chapter's may not have the broadest selection, but have friendly helpful staff and an espresso machine that the barista has to work (grind, tamp, brew, steam). The musty smell of books intermingled with the warm aroma of fresh ground espresso is intoxicating. I can get lost in this small and mighty literary world. Although, the people on computers to people reading books ratio is a little heavy on the digital side. Who am I to stop progress? All in all a great stop in town. I never thought that I would be one of THOSE people...you know, the coffee snobs. But I am. It happen slowly through for work-related purposes...then I began to avoid other coffee places b/c I'm snooty now. If you want coffee - hello Stumptown - go to Chapters. My addictive go-to drink is a blended skim 1-shot dirty chai (love love LOVE those small icees all smooth in their secret concoction). One time I went twice in a day b/c I love it so much). It you want loose leaf tea, go to Chapters. Tea sits in lovely containers and they have these special contraptions where you pour your own amount into the tea cup and the rest stays hot in a plastic container. Bonus is that you can ask them them for hot water refills. Don't and I mean don't be stupid - they will say to not push on the bottom contraption so you don't get burned but I've seen my friends (me?...no, not me) listen but then not listen to the master-tea-experts. Pros: - Coffee b/c it's Stumptown, duh - Teas - Independently owned local shop - love that! They will order any books they don't have in-stock for you. - Little bookstore and nicknacks - Free wifi - Friendly staff - Ask for a punch card so that you can eventually get a free drink Cons: - No meals, simple bagels & pastries made from another store, not a huge selection - The few outdoor seats they have are on a busy 99W roadway and can be loud with trucks going past - Books are more expensive than other places (but you are supporting a small business) Newberg has a few sit-down coffee shops but they all have a different twist to make each unique. Different coffee roasters available in drip. Wi-if access. Espresso drinks are consistently good. They have a small selection of pastries (donuts!!!!!), and health/nutrition bars. The environment is inviting. There are lots of outlets to give your laptop juice. Inviting because there are books! I like their selection, so I must be vibing with their buyer. Spacious. A few nooks. Lots of natural light from floor to ceiling windows at the front of the store. A couple of couches but mostly black cafe style round and square tables and chairs. This place is great and has excellent coffee. The books are a little pricey, but the lattes are really good. When you go make sure you have allotted a good amount of time because they can be very slow. I love this place as a good spot to sit and chat with a friend or do homework for long periods of time. Pro: 4 stars is NOT because they offer Stumptown, but because they offer 2 or 3 alternatives to Stumptown as well. One is from a local roaster, another is from Intelligentsia, which is what Stumptown aspires to be. The bookstore is a plus, no one is saying they are a Powell's, but it is nice to browse through books that are general interest and not just Christian, even though they are Christian owned and operated like the majority of coffee shops in Newberg. Con: They close way too early, giving all the evening business to the Coffee Cottage, which is a good place as well, but it'd be nice to have an alternative, ya know? read more

There are many great cozy coffee spots in Newberg, but this one takes the cake. I'm a big fan of their steamers, but more importantly I'm a fan of the superb customer service, awesome selection of books, free wi-fi, and perfect space to connect with others and share a laugh. If the owners are going to hire hippie hipsters who looks partly miserable and gives you an attitude, then at least train them to be decent and civilized. I love Chapters. I studied there in college, and now I work from there occasionally to get out of the office. The coffee is terrific. Every time it's consistent, and they are skilled at creating espresso in the traditional Italian style. They don't have large food selection, so don't come for lunch. The books they offer seem to stay current with the trends, and while seem a little expensive, who isn't these days compared to amazon. The baristas take their time here, don't expect your drink right away. Having managed specialty coffee shops that use the same machine and even coffee, I think they could increase speed of service a little, but I believe they're more concerned with getting a consistent, superior product out. Love coming here to study, especially on a rainy day. The ambiance is warm and comforting. The perfect place to relax and get coffee with a friend or just catch up on school work. Their drinks are great and they have a very large tea selection. Their chai lattes are phenomenal, instead of the Oregon chai concentrate that many other coffee places use they use a blend with very tasty spices.
