This is the only walk you'll ever do that you'll gain weight from! It was a 5 mile walk from Ala Moana to almost The end of Waikiki and back to Ala Moana! The walk has several checkpoints where you can pick up some kind of snack or freebie along the way and at the end you'll be rewarded with more food! Registration was done online - $50 per adult. You may get a tshirt depending on where you register under. The monies raised go to many different non profits on Oahu. We liked that a bunch of other doggies came out. But do keep in mind that it's hot and it's a long walk, so make sure they get to take breaks and get plenty of water too before they overheat. My dog did the walk in a stroller the entire time. Charity Walk was awesome. Great participation lots of support from well known vendors and the weather was perfect. The walk starts from Ala Moana Park to the edge of Waikiki and back to Ala Moana Park. Lots of energy along the route with lots of tasty goodies to keep your walk interesting. The route was safe for all ages, pets and even wagons and stroller's. Every group had a different color shirt to represent their organization or company and it was a sight to see the rainbow of colors which made the walls look so pretty. I work for a nonprofit so I understand how important events such as this is crucial to providing much needed services on all levels. Thank you to all who was instrumental in organizing such a big event, kept all the walkers safe, all the volunteers who passed out goodies and cheered the walker on and of course God for the perfect weather. read more

Fundraiser, Food, and Fun in the sun (walking), the 2019 Oahu Charity Walk was a great experience! As a first timer, it felt like Halloween in May. Serious trick-or-treating for adults (all ages are welcome though)!! A $40 donation to your choice Hawaii Non-Profit 501(c)(3) Organization Statewide (Monies raised on each island stay on that island) included a T-shirt + Breakfast + quality food & giveaways along the 15 Checkpoints + Lunch. The walking route from Magic Island to Waikiki was approximately 5.20 miles round trip. A great way to spend a Saturday morning in May! All of the proceeds go to organizations geared towards helping the homeless, the keiki, the aging, and more! Each Checkpoint provided a giveaway or treat and the quality of these snacks were quite impressive, with volunteers serving up a few thousand participants! Kauai Shrimp from Prince Waikiki, Fried Rice and POG Juice from Hilton Hawaiian Village, Spam Musubi from The Kahala, Canadian Bacon from Wolfgang Puck, Melona bars from Waikiki Beach, fresh baked cookies by Doubletree, and so much more. We also received reusable straws by Aqua Aston and Ala Moana Hotel - great idea (less plastic in the ocean!)! And fresh, single plumeria were handed to the ladies to wear behind the ear. Parking was easy-breezy. Choose either Ala Moana Beach Park or across the street at Ala Moana Shopping Center at no charge. Wear a light backpack to carry all of your treats and giveaways. Slather on the sunscreen. Comfy shoes, hats and sunglasses are a must as the event begins at 8am and ends around noon. Mark your calendar for next years event! All for a great cause. :-) read more

Who wakes up this early on a Saturday morning? Cray people who love to walk 6miles from Ala Moana RegionalPark through Waikiki, down the AlaWai and back to the park. While walking through Waikiki you're stopping at check points and get a stamped on your card for what? For a lunch ticket at the end !! Auryte!.... There are 18 Check Points, at everyone of those check points you get goodies and some kind of refreshment. Then rewarded with more food at the end of the walk. It's literally amazing how big hearts can expand when coming together to help out those less fortunate. Even more so when those hearts are from the Hawaii visitor industry. These amazing people from various hotels, rental car agencies, restaurants, airlines, and more come together once a year to pull together this charity walk and have been doing so since 1978. Monies raised go to various organizations, kind of like Aloha United Way. This year, across all the Hawaiian Islands, a record breaking $2 million was raised. Yep, that's right, I said $ 2 million...all to benefit over 300 charities in Hawaii nei. Great job Hawaii! This is a walk for all ages and groups. What a fun and great way to spend a Saturday morning. And when many hands, and feet, come together what a great way of helping others. This year was no exception. I love doing the Charity Walk. It's my sixth year doing this walk. It usually takes place on a Saturday in May. Registration used to be $35 for adults, but has gone up to $40 since last year. I don't have a problem with it since it benefits our tourism industry. You get a shirt with your donation, as well as getting to sample a ton of different foods along the walk. At the end of the walk, they provide you with a plate lunch, after getting all the stamps along the route. The first few years, I walked for Double Tree. The past two years, I had a friend who hooked it up with Aulani. I love the Aulani shirts because they have such cute designs every year. The route starts off at Ala Moana Beach Park, goes into Waikiki, and back to Ala Moana Beach Park. The first few years, it was a six mile walk. Last year, it was four. This year it was five. They keep switching the routes and miles every year. I wish that they would keep it consistent. Some of the foods we got this year were the cookie from Double Tree, spam musubi, chocolate covered strawberry, rice cake, thai tea, cookies from the Honolulu Cookie Company, cornbread, fried rice, and pulled pork on taro bun. The plate lunch consisted of green salad, kim chee, hot dog, fried rice, boneless fried chicken, and cream puff. My favorite was definitely the chocolate covered strawberry. It was naturally sweet and huge. The chocolate wasn't overly sweet. The only thing I don't like about these walks is that it's so early in the morning. 7 am is too early for me to get up on a Saturday morning. I guess it's ok if it's once a year. There's a saying that goes: "Friends are God's way of taking really good care of you." That's how I felt when I participated in the Hawaii Lodging & Tourism Association Charity Walk. I have heard of this benefit, but had never been involved. When my friend, Li mentioned it, I was hoping that she wasn't including me because 6 miles sounded like a far distance. Somehow, she got me to sign the form; and give her a check for $35; AND wake up early on a Saturday morning! WHAT was I thinking?? How did she trick me AGAIN? That girl has some kind of power over me - I even ended up giving her a ride! Li has a mesmerizing voice - I listened to her talking about food & entertainment along the way that would lessen our pain. Her eyes hypnotized me into believing that we would have fun... boy did we! I believe it was meant to be... all the pieces fell into place like a jigsaw puzzle. Yes, Wayne, we did have a killer party the night before with Li, and yes, I did not hear the alarm clock ring at 5am, even though I woke up at 4am and went back to bed. We did have a challenging time finding parking - ended up on Queen Street on some white coral rocks. But - we didn't have to fight the crowds! Yeah - they were gone by the time we met up at the Starting Point. We had good intentions, but I forgot my stamp card that I had taped to my phone. (There's ample supply at the Start Point.) I think I threw it somewhere when I looked at my clock & realized I WAS REALLY, REALLY LATE!! I scrambled to locate my shoes, wallet, keys, and visor that I had put away because I had visitiors over at my house the night before... yikes!! Luckily, the pace is very casual and the booths along the way have live entertainment, cheerleaders, dancers, fanners & misters - all encouraging you and thanking you for helping out! We were disappointed that some booths had run out of cookies and we had missed the bananas and yogurt at the Start - but we made up for it at our detour to Maui Tacos! (Thank you, Wayne for breakfast!) Good thing, because I was feeling light-headed... We also got our fill of Milk Tea from Curry House. They were pouring the small cups of tea back into the pitcher. I asked if I could help and had about 20 shots of tea! YUM!! Woo hoo! That gave me energy to bounce along at the Enterprise Check Point as they played "Wild Thing" although we were perspiring and conspiring to catch the bus...even the ones going in the wrong direction -- just to sit down and have some air conditioning! Yes, we laughed so hard that I almost had accidents and yes, we had thoughts of taking the bananas and cookies that walkers had left in front of some sleeping homeless people... We brain-stormed about our Halloween costumes and plotted out how we would get the other hotels' t-shirts... We cracked up about Li's phone's spell check turning us "old farts" into "one farts"... Haha! The "gas" jokes - don't get me started! ...good distraction techniques... like the cute panda from Panda Express and the fun penguin from the Hilton - they let us take photos with them! Li was an excellent navigator as she figured out how to catch up to the rest of the group when we hit the wall at Kuhio Beach. That check point had closed up and we were not able to get a stamp on our card. By that time I was delirious and just followed whatever she said. Li is a good map reader and guided us to the real food... We did enjoy the awesome Carrot Cake & fresh strawberry & iced tea from the Halekulani. The Fried Rice from the Hilton was delicious! The Kim Chee Kalua Pork on Taro Roll at the Prince Hotel was ono! The lunch at the End Point from Starwood Hotels & Resorts was fabulous: Polish dog with or without stuffing; Asian Chicken Salad; Chicken Katsu; cupcake with pink butter cream frosting; and more - I was too tired to eat. Took the plate home, covered with the foil they provided and the ziplock bag that Li suggested I bring. Fortunately, she advised me to carry a backpack for all of the goodies we collected along the way: Capri Sun, granola bar, bottled water, luggage tags with first aid kit inside; lanyard that holds a water bottle; candy; more cookies; apple slices from McDonalds; canned soft drinks; etc. There was a hilarious emcee under the tent where we sat on the ground - worried that we wouldn't be able to get back up... The door prizes were fantastic trips to neighbor islands, vacations to Turtle Bay, cruises to Sand Island, and the like! By that time, we were looking forward to a nice shower and resting at home with our happy memories and full tummies! I thank God every day for my friend, Li, and my new friends Wayne & Lien. Eat, drink, talk, stroll, eat, drink, talk, and walk. Wanna get your grub on and help Hawaii charities as well? You gotta participate in this years Charity Walk! It usually happens the 3rd Saturday in May. The walk is a mere 6 miles, starting from Ala Moana beach park, then you sight see around Waikiki, and end back at the park. There are 16 spots all over Waikiki where walkers are treated to drinks, treats, and trinkets. At the end of the walk you celebrate with an AWESOME bento, entertainment, and prize drawings. This will be my fourth time participating. The walk begins at 7 am and they usually treat you with a healthy pick me upper before you start the race. Last year they gave bananas, granola bar, and juice or water. Two stops later you are handed freshly baked Doubletree chocolate chip cookies and milk. I quickly devour it and I'm immediately handed another one. I'm not sure if there is a limit. But if someone shoves a chocolate chip cookie in my face, I would be crazy to say no. When I start to see the beautiful waters of Waikiki Beach, I know I will soon be greeted with chocolate dipped strawberries. For the keikis, there is usually a bouncer, shave ice, and cold refreshing watermelon awaiting you after you pass Jefferson Elementary. Some of the checkpoints have changed on what they give you, but the chocolate chip cookies, shave ice and chocolate dipped strawberries have been offered every year. Beside the other islands, I don't believe there is another walk like this on the island. Most of the walk is shaded except the stretch next to the Ala Wai. I usually register with Ihilani, because you get a free shirt with the minimum registration fee. I also live on the Leeward side. You can call around for hotels near you that are participating and ask how much the minimum is to get a shirt. If you don't want a shirt you can register that day before the race. read more

Seriously, this is the only walk in Hawaii where you gain weight! The Visitor Industry Charity Walk is 6 miles of food and fun with Hawaii's leaders in tourism. The walk begins and ends at Ala Moana Beach Park. The route goes from Ala Moana Boulevard to Kalakaua Avenue, down Kapahulu Avenue, up Ala Wai Boulevard, down Kalia Road and then back to Ala Moana Boulevard. 6 miles may sound like a long walk but there are a lot of distractions (good ones) along the way. The walk has a total of 18 checkpoints that offer some type of refreshment, freebie and entertainment. The food has included the Double Tree's signature chocolate chip cookies, spam musubi, shave ice, chocolate covered strawberries, fried rice, Kalua pork sliders and a few other delectable treats. The walk also includes a free lunch at the end, back at Ala Moana Beach Park's McCoy Pavilion. In order to get this lunch, you must have each checkpoint stamp your card that you get with your registration form. At the end of the 6 mile walk, you get lunch, which is provided by various Waikiki hotels. Each hotel provides a different food to make a complete lunch but good luck finishing you lunch because by the time you've completed going through 18 checkpoints, you will probably be too full for lunch. All in all, this is such a great event put together by the Hawaii Lodging and Tourism Association and the local hotels. It's a ton of fun for the entire family and such a great way to raise money for location charities. This is one walk that I will continue to do every year. read more

Today I participated in the Visitor Industry Charity Walk for the first time, and I'm glad I did. When all the pain of the walk disappeared -- facilitated by a few bottles of really cold beer -- I realized I had taken part in a wonderful event. The Visitor Industry has raised over $25 million dollars for charities since this event began 36 years ago. I'm happy I could play a small part in this undertaking. I'm also thankful that Yelp brought the event to my attention. Yelp did not sponsor this event, but I would have never participated were it not for the encouragement of my Yelp friends, Li Y, Lien V, and Nandine C. Of couse, they told me absolutely horrible lies about how the 6 mile trek really wouldn't feel like 6 miles because you stop frequently for refreshments. Ok, the refreshment part was true (or as we shall see, partially true), but the part about not feeling the 6 miles was absolute rubbish. Yet encouragement is encouragement, right? Now, we didn't walk the entire distance (more about that later), but by the time we dragged our butts back to Finish Line, it felt like we walked to China. Some people in Yelp do things like run marathons, race up Diamond Head and walk to Makapuu Lighthouse backwards. You know who they are. They check-in at gyms at 2 a.m and sign up for strange events like Yelp Kicks Butt. But you also know I am not one of them. I mean, bless their hearts, I love them all, but this is just not my lifestyle. Ok, the gig goes as follows. You get a map and a list of check points along the route (from Ala Moana Park, through Waikiki, and back again). At each checkpoint volunteers give you things like cookies, water and 9 course Chinese meals (I wish!). They stamp your list and you trudge to the next checkpoint. Shortcuts? We thought about it, but HPD stations their finest along the route to prevent this. These guys are serious! At the finish line, you show your list with all the stamps and get a ticket for lunch. At least this is how it works for most walkers (not us, by the way). The day didn't begin too well. Nadine threw a wicked pool party at her house the night before. I stayed late because I drank too much beer and got trapped in a marathon Mahjong game. Li Y, ever the sensible one, left early, but that did her absolutely no good the next day. Nadine, poor Nadine, had to clean up all evidence of her orgy, so she stayed up well past midnight. The plan called for Nadine to drive from Kaneohe and pick up Li and the two of them were to meet Lien, myself and a few others at the Start Line around 6:30 am. Because I wanted to find parking close by, I staggered out of the house at five. But even then, the closest parking place was at Magic Island which is about 35 miles from the Start (ok, so I exaggerate a little). I caught 30 minutes of extra Z's in my car then sent a text to Li: "What's Up?" Nadine had gone MIA! She didn't respond to texts and an aerial search by the Coast Guard proved fruitless (exaggeration). Li decided to bike to the park, but then Nadine called to say she was on her way, please wait. Well, long story short, I waited for L and N, while Lien began the walk with others in our group. We three finally began around 7:30. This isn't quite as bad as it looks. There were about a million walkers ahead of so it took a while for everyone to get started. True, we marched at the tail end of the mob, but hey, we did make a legal beginning. Things got worse right away. NO FOOD! The million maniacs marching ahead gobbled it all up. We trudged on, but our spirits sank as fast as our blood sugar.. Finally at the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center we detoured to Maui Tacos and devoured three of their delicious specialties. Yum! Twenty minutes later, spirits revived, we began our quest again. However, the hard, cold reality of our situation sank in. The next check point at Kuhio Beach had closed. NO FOOD! NO WATER! And no stamps for our check list. It was there we saw the futility of completing the lower third of the race. What's the point, right? YELPERS MUST HAVE FOOD! So we turned around and passed through the remaining check points back to the park. We even finished ahead of other walkers (they were really slow!). What about the missing stamps? No problem! A Halekulani volunteer stamped all of the checkpoints we had missed. Yay, Halekulani! And this is how we got out lunch, and this is how we finished the great Visitor Charity Walk of 2014. All kidding aside, a thousand mahalos to the hundreds of volunteers who supplied everyone with food, water and encouraging cheers. And a special thanks to HPD for stopping traffic (and no, they didn't care if we took short cuts). Will I walk next year? Absolutely! You see, no one really cares if you walk six miles or just six feet. You still get your meal at the end of the course, so there is no excuse for you not to join us next year. Walk to eat? Sounds like the story of my life but it should be run to eat since I love food. This is a fun walk for the whole family! It starts at 7am at McCoy Pavilion at alas Moana Beach Park and you walk 9.6 km (6 miles) but it totally doesn't feel like it as you make stops and chat with your coworkers. At each stop you need to get your card stamped and make sure you get all stamps and don't lose the card...or no lunch for you at the end. There's entertainment along the way too! Make sure you wear sunscreen and wear a hat, one parts of the walk are really sunny and get hot. The walk takes about 2 - 2 1/2 hours depending on if you take breaks (we take a potty break at a secret undisclosed location every year and breaks for the slow pokes to catch up). Each spot has a treat too...you will get a lot of cookies and be very hydrated along the way. Chocolate covered strawberry is my favorite...the strawberry is huge and sweet! I have done this walk a few times with my company and we always have a good time. It's a great team building event for us. And really all the food and calories don't count. Leave it to the hotel industry to come up with a fun event to help local charities. Having arrived half an hour before the official 7 AM start time, I had time to grab a quick bite of yogurt and bananas from the breakfast booth but I opted not eat so I wouldn't waste my tummy space with bananas. There were 8 of us ready to conquer that 6-mile course. After the 3rd checkpoint, we started to see some good snacks after getting our bottled water. The water came in handy as you started walking in the hot sun, it was already humid because my T-shirt was beginning to feel sticky. Once we got to the strawberries dipped in chocolates, I knew some good eats were about to be had and there were quite a few delicious snacks at the various checkpoints just like last year's walk. Eating and walking...eating and walking, it just doesn't get any better than that! The entire walk is a decent course and it's "do-able". It's very nice to see all the early risers pitching in to help raise monies for the community and especially, the volunteers. They also kept encouraging the walkers along the way. When we made it to the finish line, we were already full from all those wonderful snacks provided by the sponsors but we still traded in our completed walk-form for our lunch tickets. Who can turn down good food? We found a place to "hunker" down inside the big tent after the volunteer crew loaded up our lunch plates. I really enjoyed the kimchi served on top of the polish dog. That combo was tasty as was the Chinese chicken salad. Chicken katsu pieces were big but I thought the accompanying sauce was overly sweet. Entertainment from the emcee and singer was awesome and things got more exciting when they started announcing the winning numbers. There were some great gift cards but an astounding number of prizes to the neighbor islands were given out this year! There were at least 6-8 trip packages and the rules were fair since you've to be present to win. No Vegas trip this year though but that's okay because neighbor island trips are so fun. I'd have loved to win a trip but it was not to be so. I was so close but no cigar; I was only 1 digit off. Maybe next year...crossing my fingers early. read more
