He charges a yearly membership 'Fee' to see a patient..... above and beyond what he gouges the insurance company for your visit! What... is that even legal? What a sham! He pretends to read your lab results and you've got to wonder if he really knows HOW to read them! Since there's never a plan for your health discussed, as he pushes you out the door for another cigarette brake...but they make sure to rope you into the next visit! $$ They do not remind you about the office visit, but then if you miss your visit, you get a rude call from the receptionist belittling you and scolding you! I formerly lived in Prescott, AZ and had Dr Heikkenen as my primary care Dr for a brief period of time. I went to him with swollen, painful feet, ankles and hands. He DID NOT order any lab work and immediately told me that I was wearing the WRONG SHOES. He told me to buy a pair of Doc Martens shoes ($100+). I did and there was no change. He then sent me to get physical therapy in a pool where I waded with hip and knee replacement patients - no result. Out of frustration, I went to the Mayo clinic in Scottsdale, AZ. They did a complete work up and diagnosed that I had Chronic Kidney Disease. This would have been obvious if Dr H had ordered routine lab work like a renal function panel. I wasted months being his patient. I regret this delay in my getting proper treatment for my kidney disease. Please do not go to this doctor. read more

This was by far the worst experience I have EVER had with a doctor in all of my 64 years. I sat & filled out tons of paperwork. He finally came out in the lobby to see me. He looked at my prescription bottles and flew into a rage about anti-anxiety medication that I was taking. Then he went into a tirade about Doug Ducey and opioids (which my medication was not anyway) and that he can't prescribe it (which I hadn't even asked him to do). Then he told the girl behind the glass (which you are not supposed to touch) that he wasn't accepting me as a patient. I feel I really lucked out. He's pompous, rude & obnoxious like so many others have said. He looks unkempt and very unprofessional. The real kicker is that I was asked on the phone before my appointment if I took anything for anxiety and I said yes. The supposed exam room is set up as his office with paperwork every where. no exam or vitals taken. He just orders numerouse tests and demands to be completed immediately. Rude, unprofessional, and arguably fraudulent. I went to him for a physical. I waited 50 minutes in his office. After spending *FOUR* minutes with me, during which he did no examinations such as looking in my ears or listening to my breathing, he showed me to the door. I said I had questions I wanted to ask. He said No, he was on the next patient, that he has 4,000 patients he needs to handle. He billed Medicare $280 for what he claimed was a 40-minute visit. There are good doctors out there. My husband is a veteran and Dr. Heikkenen treated him like absolute garbage, not treating him for what he needed care for but just sending him to get x-rays and other useless test. He talks down to you as a client and makes you feel as though you know nothing about your own health. I personally don't like to take a bunch of medication and prefer other alternative ways to get better and he has made me feel like a horrible person for my medical decisions as an adult. I have been a patient of Dr. H. since 2014 when I had a stroke and then Dr. John Mackenzie, my neurologist, sent me to Dr. H. All has been as good as possible since. He knows what meds I should take and no opioids!!!! We are from same area of midwest Me from Notre Dame born in South Bend, IND and Dr. from Michigan. We talk alot of our upbringings.... faith and positve thinking. I now face a lumpectomy and he has prepared me before that coming Oct. 6th. september 23, 2020 to: anybody looking for a g.p. doctor office. we (my wife & i) retired here in the prescott area 5 years ago. we sought out a new g.p. doctor's office, to coordinate our medicare needs. we were referred to "rocky mountain" medical, at 1003 division st. 1 suite# 1, prescott 1 az 86301 doctor charles heikkenen, m.d. ... by our new neighbors. dr. heikkenen, has always been courteous, and very helpful. he actually was helpful in counseling me to have the strength to quit smoking. you see, last year in june, dr. heikkenen said he had the thought that it should be time for me to have a "upper body ct scan". immediately after having the ct scan, dr. heikkenen called us, for both my wife and i to come into his office, immediately ! he, bowed his head, and took a breath, and looked me in the eye, and told me the ct scan showed a spot on my lung. he at that moment was more than my doctor, he really cared !!! he immediately referred me to a specialist, and ultimately the specialist rushed me into "cyberknife" radiation in phoenix. today, after treatment, and follow ups, i am grateful to say that my tumor is in "check", and i feel lucky to have a doctor like dr. heikkenen who immediately got me connected, and his continued follow ups, being concerned about my progress. oh, yea, my wife has also been extremely pleased with dr. heikkenen, and his staff, even thou her needs have been minor compared to mine, she is thankful for them. charles and velma shank read more

Like Paula D's review, If I could give negative stars I would. For anyone thinking about choosing this guy as your Dr...I STRONGLY ADVISE AGAINST IT!. I just moved to Prescott and not knowing any Dr I found him via Yavapai County Hospital listing. Since I am new, the only thing I had to go by was location and if they were accepting new patients. I called and made a 1:30PM appt for two weeks out. When I showed up early at 1PM for my 1:30 appt (thinking there would be much paperwork to fill out..there was) reception said my appt was for 2:45PM. Then they said there was only 1 person in front of me and they would see me after. That person spent about 15 minutes with the Dr and about 1/2 hour after that after waiting for 1 hour they asked if I wanted to reschedule as someone who just walked in the door would be seen 1st! Then they said do I realize that they would not be looking at my history, but would be doing full blood work and xrays and would decide after that if they would take me as a patient. When I was expressing my frustration with having to reschedule, the dr came out and said they were experiencing technical difficulties and maybe I should find another Dr! I took one look at him, disheveled, dirty hair and generally looking unclean, I said that I think I will and left. This is the most bizzare Dr experience in my 65 years on this earth. I wouldn't trust this guy to walk my dog let alone be my dr. So, buyer beware and go somewhere else where they might actually care about you as a patient and not just billing for services. read more

If I could, I would give Dr. Heikkenen a minus 100 stars. My mom is a former patient. He is rude, arrogant, and has a very bad bedside manner. He rushes his patients out of the office and doesn't allow time for questions. His office is filthy and not sanitary. In the midst of a CoVID 19, he continued to have her come in the office when she didn't need to therefore costing her money. She had a rash under her breast and asked him what the cause was and he said "because you are fat", which by the way is NOT true. Even if she were obese, you don't say such things. He has consistently displayed the highest standard of care over the past twenty years within both an emergency care facility and presently in private practice. He is also greatly respected by specialist colleagues as frequently indicated through top notch referrals. His always thorough insights and impeccable analyses have provided continuing excellent health results. On two occasions Dr. Heikkenen saved the life of my wife. An enlarged heart was discovered, then thankfully returned to normal; further, breast cancer was found and fully resolved. He even went above and beyond when he got into the ambulance when she fractured her sacrum. His diagnosis of my sudden hernia was quickly resolved. ******DO NOT GO TO THIS DOCTOR***** I am very shocked and in awe of how horribly my spouse and I were treated by Dr. Heikkenen. He was very rude and unprofessional to the both of us. Not only was he discussing our medical history in front of other patients that made us feel uncomfortable, he also told us that he would "fire" us as clients if we didn't get our EKG done within the next week. He has a very aggressive tone of voice and is very unprofessional as a doctor. I would highly caution anyone if they thought to see him. When I told him his behavior was inappropriate towards my spouse and I he not only told me to "get the f*** out of my practice" but he also threatened to "beat my ass" A police report was filed due him making a physical threat. This was very very ridiculous coming out of the mouth of not only a doctor but a 60+ year old man. The case did not go far due to the fact that it was made out to be a "he said/ she said" scenario and he lied about the whole situation. Less than zero. My relationship with Dr. Heikkenen was good at first. He'd ask me about my work and seemed genuinely interested. Later however, things changed. Dr. Heikkenen's use of profanity began to bother me to the extent that I stopped taking my young son with me for my appointments. Also, during appointments, Dr. Heikkenen continually leaves the exam room door open which allows the office staff and anyone in the waiting room to hear the conversations during the appointment and the Doctor's use of his voice recognition software to record patient notes. With this much said, my appointment with Dr. Heikkenen just this morning, made an entirely new level of his character quite obvious. I went in to his office for his annual evaluation of my recent blood tests. I've been a patient of his for 3 or 4 years. Before seeing Dr. Heikkenen this morning, I asked his receptionist about the availability of allergy shots, mentioning to her that I would like to get one if available. I won't go into all the details of my visit with Dr. Heikkenen although he did refer me to two individual specialists. Before I left the exam room, I asked him about the availability of allergy shots. He said: "She's gone!" meaning that his receptionist had left the office. I asked him if he could give me a shot and he said that he had another patient waiting and to come back in an hour and his receptionist would be back then. About an hour and a half later, after placing calls to the specialists who he wanted me to see, I went back to his office. I opened the exterior door to the waiting room and met Dr. Heikkenen coming out with two people. I stepped out of the way and asked him about getting an allergy shot. He said his secretary had not returned and that he was "...tired of my crap." And that he had to get someone to the emergency room. I was very surprised at his comment toward me. He uttered more profanity and told me if I didn't like it, that I should find another doctor. I expressed my opinion of his actions toward me without the use of profanity and headed to my vehicle to leave the parking lot. I was parked in a standard painted parking stall. The police came to my home a short while later. They said that Dr. Heikkenen had told them I was somehow blocking his patient's access to their truck. I explained to the police that this was not true and that I had done no such thing. I also explained that I had been invited back to his office for an allergy shot although Dr. Heikkenen did not tell this important fact to the police. He did, however, mention to the police, at least some details of my visit with him which I thought were private. I did nothing illegal and the police know this. They are just doing their job, they told me. Needless to say, when your trusted physician turns on you and reports you to the police for simply returning to the office as instructed, it's time to find a new doctor and let other people know about his behavior. We have been seeing Dr. Heikkenen for over 5 years. He sticks to the recommended Medicare guidelines as to what tests and procedures that Medicare patients should have. Thanks to doing this our records and tests were current and when he suspected cancer he sent us to a specialist. One of us was seen the next day and the day after that was in surgery for a biopsy. The diagnosis was cancer. The treatment started immediately and a life was saved. We pay for results and not for a Doctor's personality. He is insistent because he cares. We want to enjoy the last one third of our life in good or reasonable health. read more

I have only been to this doctor twice. At each visit I asked him about his professional opinion regarding a health issue I had been experiencing - he told me his "crystal ball was broken". How is that helpful? When he felt he had spent enough time with me he stood up and said, "Well it's a nice day outside - let's get you out of here". 12/18/2015: I was referred to Dr. Heikkenen's practice and arrived for an appointment 12/18/2015. Though I arrived on time I was kept waiting for about 50 minutes. The intake was typical in that I filled out a bunch of forms, was weighed and blood pressure was taken. Upon noting that I was over 65 and type 2 diabetic he ordered a number of blood and urine tests. During most of the time he was speaking into his computer using software to translate his words into a type written record. This is a bit annoying as I could not tell if he was talking to me or the computer. After a whirlwind of activity, he said 'I do things by the book. Do you have any questions?' I said 'Yes, while all these tests are well and good, they don't address the reason why I came here and it is about my right knee.' At which point he referred me to a local group for x-rays of my knees and made another appointment to review the results of those tests. When I got to my car I checked my phone for messages and found two voice mails from his office reminding me that I had an appointment that day. The calls to me were made while I was in his office. I then went to the lab for a blood draw that day as it was just down the hall. 12/22/2015: Arrived on time for a review of my blood work. Because my blood sugar was high he recommended another blood test just to be sure, which I got. After reviewing everything, he referred me to three specialists and gave me their cards from a rack of about 20 or so. He also gave me a prescription for a controversial statin drug to lower my cholesterol. On the way out I was reminded by the staff to make sure I called the referrals before the next appointment because if I didn't they charge the doctor's office $35.00. I told them I would call them. 12/29/2015: Arrived on time and was seen in about 20 minutes. During this visit my blood work was reviewed and I was asked if I had made appointment with the referrals. I said I had postponed them into January as I wanted to get an idea as to the cost to me at this point given the doctor's office visits, lab work and Christmas expenses before I spent more money. He then spoke into his computer stating that I had refused to use insulin that he was prescribing, that I wanted to see if I would get it and the other drugs that he was prescribing "free" from my insurance. That is not what I said. Just as a point of reference, the previous prescription was $90.00 by its self. He then wrote a prescription for three other drugs and said; '...this is a two way relationship. So far you have done nothing.' I pointed out that I had done all the lab work and x-rays that he recommended. He then said 'These girls work very hard making those appointments for you.' They were referrals, not appointments that entail either a single phone call or fax. I had to make the calls to set up the appointments. At this point I am rather confused. I did not say that I would not see them, only postpone them and in one case I specifically said that I would see him in January. He continues; 'Here is what we will do. I will be your doctor for the next 30 days at which time we will part company. So, you have 30 days to find another doctor if things don't go well. Is that okay with you?' I said that that was fine. Again I am confused as I don't know what I have done that is so bad as to warrant this. But as I wanted to correct something that he said into his computer I said: 'I would like to correct something. You said that I refused to take insulin that you would have prescribed today. That is not what I said. What I said was that I didn't understand why you would prescribe insulin for me as I am a type 2 diabetic.' 'You didn't say that,' he said. 'Yes I did. It is in your records.' Actually it is on his intake forms that I filled out on the first day. His reply to this was: "That's it, were done. GET OUT OF MY OFFICE!" So, I got up, placed the prescription form that he had given me on the examining table in front of him and said, "You can keep this." To which he replied "GET OUT." One of his assistant's was following me out the door and to her I said; "Tell him not to bother sending the bill." He heard me and said; "I'll send a bill all right!" Summary: I have never had such a situation with anyone such as the one I have had with this individual. At no time did I ever raise my voice to him. In fact I rarely had a chance to say anything. I was totally perplexed by his behavior. When I got home after that encounter I visited several websites that rate doctors in my area and I find that I am not alone in my experiences and observations. Also I am beginning to be of the opinion that anyone who behaves this way may well have mental issues that should be looked into. Given my experience with him I would not recommend him for anything. He is a very gruff and arrogant individual to begin with. His "bed side manner" if you will, is nonexistent. read more

I made my appointment 1 month in advance and arrived early, the office is located in a strip-plaza "like" area behind the hospital which looked old and almost empty. The office smelled musty and old. The paperwork was questionable for example: He requests you to sign a document stating you will return every 6 months. Why??? The receptionist was eating at the front window and BOTH of them were very rude (unprofessional) I waited for almost 2 hours I was the only person there for almost 1 hour , when two others arrived I asked the lady next to me if she liked the doctor. She told me although he followed through with tests etc his bed-side manners needed much improvement. The receptionist came out and called the lady in before me even to her surprise she turned to me and said isn't she next?? The receptionist loudly stated "she's a new patient so she can wait" even though my appointment was over an hour ago. No consideration and she degraded me in front of others. I complained to the older lady and she started to actually laugh at me, I then decided to request my paperwork and copy of my driver's license back and walked out. This was the worst experience in a medical office I have ever had. I was a patient here&saw the doctor 1 time previously.Other than having asthma I am a healthy young adult.Not realizing this"doctor"demands full blood work done every 6 mos whether you are sick or not,I didn't go in for the 6 month unnecessary($revenue$ collecting)labwork.Because of this (unbeknownst to me)when I needed to refill my asthma inhaler the pharmacist told me the RX was not valid because my "doctor" had dropped me.When I called the office,they matter of fact told me,yes I was dropped,offered no apologies&acted like they could care less that I needed asthma RX.The rude recept'ist said the doctor & office manager would have to decide whether to take me back.They never called,so I had to,they told me that they were not taking me back because I missed my 6 month lab work. If I could give a lower score I would. Our experience was very similiar to the gentleman who was thrown out of Dr. Heikkenen's office - only it happened to us after a 5 year relationship. First he doesn't doctor - just orders blood tests and records the results into his computer. I also had the experience of him mistating some of the info he recorded. He is abrupt, crude, rude, sarcastic and looks and dresses like a bad plumber. But he certainly can't handle any sarcasm or joking aimed at him. My husband made an inappropriate remark two visits ago about whether or not he was a real Dr - which anyone would question if they saw him - as we were leaving. I heard the Dr. loudly defending his medical training to the entire waiting room and I found that strange. While it wasn't a good thing for my husband to say, he has some early dementia (which the Dr. knows about) and has lost some of his social filters. It was certainly nothing to get upset about - a Dr. secure in his practice would have laughed it off - but not this guy. He informed my husband this morning that he would not be disrespected like that and would no longer treat him. At first I thought he was kidding - this from the king of sarcasm???? But no - he proceeded to get very nasty and hateful and accuse my husband of all sorts of things while his voice kept getting louder and louder. And it's pretty loud to start with.
