There is no shortage of carriage ride here in downtown Charleston, and we got lucky. We left our hotel and just decided to walk towards where all of the carriages were at. A nice man asked if we were interested in a carriage ride, perfect, yes. Okay, paid, got a receipt, showed us where to go, right around the corner, we are on the next ride in just over 30 minutes. Did a little walking around and showed up. Got to meet Buster, the horse while he was getting ready. Then we were loaded into the carriage. Nice and comfortable. I believe our guide is name is Will, sorry if I got that wrong. He did a great job, super personable. The tours are regulated through the city, so it's a lottery on which tour you get, somewhat unfortunate, but that decision is in bigger hands. It's still a great time. We had a great time, informative and funny. Couldn't ask for anything more. I highly recommend it. Almost forgot, they horses are treated extremely well, they are living a great life.

a miserable, over worked horse that deserves to be in some grass.

It is inhumane to force horses to haul around heavy a** , too lazy to walk a** individuals. they spend all day in the hot outside. they use the bathroom in literal bags. it is so sad to see. these animals don't know a better life and likely don't even know what it's like to run in a field. I would never ever go on one of these i rather let a horse kick me. I don't know how this is still allowed. do better

I wanted to show a friend what a great place Charleston is, but we didn't have much time. So, we opted for a carriage ride between appointments. I've been on a carriage ride before in Charleston and it was great fun. This time, not so much... The guy who led our ride went out of his way to be be unkind and sexist. He started out asking each group where they are visiting from. He was very jovial and kind to all of the others in our group. When he heard that we were from DC, he immediately insulted us. He apparently has a chip on his shoulder about where we live and went on to tell us that we must be, of course, be "government-working." He didn't even try to hide his contempt. We tried to downplay it and we got into the carriage. The guide was having difficulty with a somewhat spirited horse, but he did a great job with that. The guide spinned folksy yarns about the architecture and past residents (we Googled some on our phones during the ride and the stories were a mixture on accuracy). However, he also interjected digs toward women along the way. For example, as we were traveling through an area with shops, he yelled out that the men should safeguard their wallets so that the "little ladies" don't spend all of their (men's) hard earned money...yikes. At the end of the ride, he made a brazen plug for a tip. My colleague gave him a tip for us because she's an extremely nice person and believes in karma. Although guide is an older guy, I don't think that this was a generational issue. This was bad manners. There are many older men that would never treat others (men or women) like this, particularly if they want a tip. What started of badly turned out to be mediocre. There are other Charleston Carriage tours.

Took a horse carriage tour on our last morning in Charleston. Our guide Eric was awesome. He was extremely knowledgeable and funny. The horse Rocky was gorgeous and strong. He is a retired Amish draft horse saved at auction. Evidently a lot of people must be worried about how the horses are treated because he explained they are rotated out to the fields every few weeks. We had a great time! Thank you Eric.

I have always wanted to learn more about Charleston and taking a carriage tour around the town is the way to do this. Our tour started off a little bumpy as one of the tires/wheels basically had a flat and we had to return and start again with a different horse and carriage. Our tour guide didn't shorten the tour and we all ended up having a great time. The history and old houses/mansions are really special and so nice to see while riding on a carriage pulled by a huge horse. Your route is decided by a ping pong ball!

They are funny and kind as well. My daughter was visiting from NYC to help me unload these reproductive boxes( feels like that anyway) and I decided to take her on a carriage tour. She was adamant that I investigate what company treats their horses the best., Here we landed! What a lovely place. The barn I mean. I so enjoyed hearing about the horses, their history and work schedules and requirements. Made us feel like we made a great decision. Dick ( Richard) and Dutch ( horse) were great! Very informative and loved hearing about the history and homes of Charleston. My kids were both born in North Charleston , but it's been a long journey to get back. It was really an exceptional tour and I felt completely safe and confident that these horses were treated beautifully. Do it! I didn't feel like anyone was sitting on my lap and I did like that even though they knew who lived in those crazy gorgeous homes, they did not divulge the names of their occupants., I could go again tomorrow. There are four different routes and it's by lottery which tour you go on , so you can really be a repeater!

During my first visit to Charleston a few years ago, I took one of their daytime carriage tours and left feeling... underwhelmed. I didn't learn all that much, the tour wasn't especially memorable, and I wrote that I'd rather have explored the city on foot. Fast forward to my most recent visit when one of my friends wanted to do the Haunted Carriage Tour. Since it was something different, I happily went along and I'm glad I did. Our horse, Ron, was a 2,000 pound French Percheron and wow.... talk about a workhorse! From what I observed, the horses seemed well cared for despite the small stable. It was fun learning a little about Ron before we set off. Our guide, Matt, was informative, engaging, and did a great job mixing Charleston history with the haunted stories. While I'm not really into ghost tours, I still learned quite a bit. In fact, my favorite takeaway wasn't haunted at all - it was learning the difference between a graveyard and a cemetery. This tour also had a digital component as we were prompted to scan the QR code to see photos of the individuals/"ghosts" he was talking about. The tour also gave us another opportunity to see Charleston from a different perspective and this time around I enjoyed riding through the historic streets by carriage. Overall, this experience was much more enjoyable than my first. The company clearly has these tours down to a science and if you're deciding between a daytime tour and the haunted evening tour, I'd surprisingly recommend the latter. I'm glad I gave Old South another chance.
