Great tour of historic Charleston, SC with our tour guide Dick and his trusted friend Boeing the Horse :) The tour was both informative and entertaining. We arrived at the barn early to purchase our tickets and had time to visit the Marketplace just a few blocks away before departing. Although it started to rain about midway during the tour (and we did get quite wet) it was absolutely worth it! I would highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to learn about the city and see many of the beautiful churches and homes in the area. read more

We didn't use them for our tour, but I almost got run over by one of their tours at a street crossing (where pedestrians always have ROW). The guy handling the horse/leading the tour stopped like he was acknowledging our crossing and that of two more people. We all started to cross but then he clicked at the horse who started moving. So we stopped. He stopped again as if to yield right of way but as we started to cross in front, he clicked at the horse again. I had on a boot for a foot injury and ended up having to scamper across the street because the horse wasn't stopping. When in doubt, motion to peds, please, so we know your plans! read more

There is no shortage of carriage ride here in downtown Charleston, and we got lucky. We left our hotel and just decided to walk towards where all of the carriages were at. A nice man asked if we were interested in a carriage ride, perfect, yes. Okay, paid, got a receipt, showed us where to go, right around the corner, we are on the next ride in just over 30 minutes. Did a little walking around and showed up. Got to meet Buster, the horse while he was getting ready. Then we were loaded into the carriage. Nice and comfortable. I believe our guide is name is Will, sorry if I got that wrong. He did a great job, super personable. The tours are regulated through the city, so it's a lottery on which tour you get, somewhat unfortunate, but that decision is in bigger hands. It's still a great time. We had a great time, informative and funny. Couldn't ask for anything more. I highly recommend it. Almost forgot, they horses are treated extremely well, they are living a great life. read more

I wanted to show a friend what a great place Charleston is, but we didn't have much time. So, we opted for a carriage ride between appointments. I've been on a carriage ride before in Charleston and it was great fun. This time, not so much... The guy who led our ride went out of his way to be be unkind and sexist. He started out asking each group where they are visiting from. He was very jovial and kind to all of the others in our group. When he heard that we were from DC, he immediately insulted us. He apparently has a chip on his shoulder about where we live and went on to tell us that we must be, of course, be "government-working." He didn't even try to hide his contempt. We tried to downplay it and we got into the carriage. The guide was having difficulty with a somewhat spirited horse, but he did a great job with that. The guide spinned folksy yarns about the architecture and past residents (we Googled some on our phones during the ride and the stories were a mixture on accuracy). However, he also interjected digs toward women along the way. For example, as we were traveling through an area with shops, he yelled out that the men should safeguard their wallets so that the "little ladies" don't spend all of their (men's) hard earned money...yikes. At the end of the ride, he made a brazen plug for a tip. My colleague gave him a tip for us because she's an extremely nice person and believes in karma. Although guide is an older guy, I don't think that this was a generational issue. This was bad manners. There are many older men that would never treat others (men or women) like this, particularly if they want a tip. What started of badly turned out to be mediocre. He is a retired Amish draft horse saved at auction. Evidently a lot of people must be worried about how the horses are treated because he explained they are rotated out to the fields every few weeks. I have always wanted to learn more about Charleston and taking a carriage tour around the town is the way to do this. Our tour started off a little bumpy as one of the tires/wheels basically had a flat and we had to return and start again with a different horse and carriage. Our tour guide didn't shorten the tour and we all ended up having a great time. With a few hours to kill before my flight left, my sister and I decided to take a carriage ride since it's been years since my last ride. Of course I am blanking on our guide's name, but the horse was Chief. The tour itself was 5 stars. We went down to the Battery and back, learning about the Charleston earthquake, building designs, current home values, and the backgrounds of those who built, commissioned, or live(d) in the homes. Every time I take one of these tours, I learn more about the city; after coming here for 10 years I thought I knew it all, so it's a pleasant surprise. I can't give our guide 5 stars, though. He talked a LOT about himself, giving us a pretty detailed history about his previous employment and even where he goes to church now. I'm sure this would be interesting to some people, but he skipped over some parts of the tour or had to cut some explanations short when there would have been plenty of time without his autobiography. Charleston Carriage Works is still my favorite carriage tour and I'll continue to use them and refer them, but I hope this guide spends more time on Charleston history and less time on personal history for his other tours. read more

We had a terrific tour around historic Charleston today with Jeff as our guide and Rodney for our horse. Jeff is a high school history teacher and was born & raised in Charleston. He gave us an amazing understanding of the history of this beautiful city as he expertly helped Rodney steer us through the historic areas. We stopped and he explained so many important homes and other buildings to us and we truly felt like we got the info. from someone who really understood it rather than someone reading from a script they were given. This was the highlight of our trip. I was planing on using another carriage company, but didn't realize there was so many and stopped at this one first not realizing. Our horse the rock was huge and awesome. Had a little personality. Our guide Blake was awesome. Comedian and a great historian. We did 5 different tours in 3 days and this was the most informative. The only down side ... it's a lottery of where you get to tour. You get a random color and that's the quadrant of the city you get do through. Felt like the area we covered wasn't too exciting but our awesome guide made the best of it. Would do again. I googled carriage tours and Charleston Carriage Works came up. Without looking at reviews, I booked it after reading through their website on their website. I am SO happy that I did! Blake, our tour guide, with his horse Jake, were fantastic. Blake is a local himself , and you can tell that he is passionate in what he does. This was one of the first touristy things we did in Charleston when we arrived. It was a good decision because it gave us an idea of where we wanted to explore further as well as a history lesson. We had a nice leisurely one hour tour with a guide who had a great sense of humor and knew how to add it to history at the right moment. Jake was our horse and he too had a great personality. The tour took us through downtown, the historic home area, Rainbow Row, as well as the waterfront. Worth the price of admission. We were also told how well the horses were treated and cared for which was great to hear. The horses all seemed happy and healthy. I was hesitant in taking a carriage tour of Charleston, but man I'm glad my wife talked me in to it! We had been walking around Charleston for a few days and saw a lot of these things on the tour, but being informed about the history of the city, the beautiful homes on King St, the battery, and many churches/historical buildings was really neat. Our tour guide was Matt and he was hilarious and very informative. He answered all of our questions during and after the tour. The horse we got was Gary and he killed it with the directions and safety! The tour took an hour and I thought that was the perfect length of time! They do tours every 30 minutes and fit about 16 in a carriage. We called at 2:20 and got on a tour for 3:10. I paid over the phone with a credit card. Very easy process! It was worth the $26/person! Also, they make sure to tell people about how they take care of the horses with breaks between rides, how they have a farm where the spend 3 weeks on the farm for every 6 weeks giving tours. This is the worst uninformative tour i have ever been on. Do not get Patrick as your guide. All he does is yell at the horse continuously and if you ask a question he gets cocky. By the time the ride is over you cannot stand the sound of his voice.. He has an insecurity issue by the manner he must constantly yell at the horse and respond to people, All he talks about is prohibition and the illegal drinking and activities in the bars. We were told that all the carriage rides in Charleston were regulated as far as price and the route they take through downtown. We bought our tickets at their stand and choose this company because the carriage was leaving in 5 minutes and there would not be a wait. We enjoyed our ride. Our guide was informative and had a pleasant voice. We learned alot about the history of the city and also ejoyed hearing some of his stories. There are several carriage rides in Charleston and I'm sure they're all good (and all pretty much the same price for the same length tour), but I wanted to recommend Charleston Carriage Works specifically because of how they treat their horses! The horses are retired Amish draught horses; they rotate them from pasture to the city every 6 weeks so they always get a break and end up working about 7 months out of the year. When they're working, they work 5 days on, 2 off. Again, I suspect the other companies are also humane but this one really seemed sensitive about their care. We initially planned to walk all the way from the landmark 4-block city market to the White Point Gardens and back using two parallel streets. It was chilly and windy and saw a better way to see the historic area: taking a carriage ride with Charleston Carriage Works. Our guide and driver, Will, was fantastic as was his faithful horse, Dale. We were able to see much more and learn much more in an hour than we would have had we spent three hours walking. Tried a different carriage company when we had family in town last month. I have to say, being a lover of carriage rides and having frequented the other companies, I wasn't a fan of this particular ride. The guide didn't really do much talking about history, but rather made jokes about Charlestonians and the south. Something I didn't really appreciate. I got the feeling they try to make a reputation for being a more lighthearted and fun Carriage company. In the end, the $1-$2 cheaper fare wasn't worth it for me. Was walking through the market with a coupon for another carriage ride when this company approached my mom and I. They gladly accepted the coupon (all the carriages are in the same price range FYI), and got us on the next ride at 11. It was a chillier Saturday morning, but they had blankets ready for us all and we were off. There's a lottery system of which tour route you get to take (there's three) so you don't know what you'll get, but we lucked out with the battery park/residential one. Which was perfect, because my mom couldn't walk all that. Our tour guide was a younger girl (can't remember her name but she was very informative) and our horse was Prince. He was very well taken care of, and you could see they cared about their horses! Overall it was a good tour and an excellent way to see Charleston if you're not in town for a long time. read more
