We were looking for some grilling equipment and baking items, and found a whole array of things we wanted and could use! They had something for every budget and all good sturdy items. Also they had a lot of fun and quirky items like foldable blankets for hiking (packed into a tiny sack) and sayings for your wall. It was a fun shop to browse and discover some new items. The store was clean and staff were friendly and helpful. I found the aisles to be open and easy to navigate, and shelves were not overly packed. Great store to find what is needed!

We have loved watching it grow and expand its offerings over the years. my husband being in the maintenance and carpentry fields at times found himself needing things and North Woods hardware has always been there to assist with a cheerful smile. Service has always been friendly and helpful. I love perusing the HomeGoods and I've enjoyed exploring the expanded garden areas no stop to Glen. Arbor is complete without a pop into our favorite northern hardware store.

She went to the front of the store and started chatting with a coworker. I waited. And waited. Finally, I went up to the front of the store, and on my way out the door I said "Thanks for your help." She replied very contemptuously, "You're so very welcome." I don't know, maybe they feel they have too many customers. If that's the case, I'm happy to help alleviate that situation.

The smaller places have people that are friendlier and more knowledgeable than the big box stores. They let us bring our dog in there when we're doing errands and walking around downtown. There was one Valentine's Day celebration when the downtown merchants were giving out prizes to the kids, and Boyne City Hardware gave our dog a nicely wrapped mini-baggie of dog biscuits. Hopefully, they help boost commerce here in East Jordan. I'm putting a spin on this write up. Looking at it from a different perspective... While at Gill-Roys I see a much needed tool for $20 that I know I can get at Sam Walton's place in Petoskey for $12. It's important to remember you can't fairly compare a 40 store hardware company in Michigan to a chain of 4,700 outlets across the US. The buying power differences alone make it impossible to compete in price. Next, the tool at Gill-Roys is top quality and made strong in the US of A. The knock-off at Sam's was made overseas and I question the durability. Then there's the availability of a knowledgeable individual to answer questions or guide me in the right direction. Most of the big box stores don't offer it, Gill-Roys has several friendly, qualified and experienced people to point me straight. Finally, I have to drive 40 minutes and wait in a long line at the major retailers. If I need that tool immediately, it's in my hands at work on the project in 20 minutes time. To sum it up, it's more frugal to make the drive to the city and pay less (sometimes), if you know what you need, can settle for a lesser product or are in no hurry. The advantages of local hardware, such as Gill-Roys, are convenience of location, experienced staff to draw upon and a better selection. Wasted my time picking one out only to have the clerk tell me that there was a delivery and set up charge unless I live within 5 miles of the store. (I happen to live about 10 miles away.). I asked the clerk to check with the manager or owner as the published ad had no restrictions. She declined. I left. I was not the amount of the charge. It was the bait and switch that offended me.
