Food was OK, we wouldn't recommend this restaurant. We went there today after a day on the beach for a late lunch. Drunken clams were good, bread they give with it is very soft; doesn't work for dipping. Hubby ordered the chicken sandwich that is supposed to come with mozzarella cheese and I ordered the lobster tacos that is supposed to come with chipotle Mayo and old bay fries. When we received our food; his chicken sandwich had yellow American and my lobster had regular Mayo and regular fries. Not worth the $20.00 for 2 tacos. Very little lobster mostly Mayo and cabbage and a small slice on each taco of avocado. The waitress tried but didn't seem to know what their restaurant offered; we asked what type of oysters they had since the charge 3.50 per piece figured they had to be good. She didn't know and when she asked she came back telling us they were from Maryland; we have no idea what type of oysters as she didn't share the actual name so we skipped on them. I had ordered a Sauvignon Blanc; I think I got a Chardonnay as it was very yellow and sweet. I asked if I can exchange it as it was to sweet and asked if they have Hendricks gin. She of course didn't know and said I can check so you want a "shot". I immediately said no, just want to know if you have Hendricks. She came back with a rock glass with Hendricks straight. I said I didn't order this, you walked away so fast I couldn't tell you that I wanted a Hendricks Martini with cucumbers, please. Finally got that but it was warm not shaken; so I had to ask for ice. Now let's talk about the cleanliness of the bathrooms. We are still fighting COVID and most people are concerned and want to know when they go out to eat that the place is clean. Well; I think the below pictures speak as to how clean their bathrooms are. I wish I went to the bathroom before we ordered and ate. We would have left before we sat down. There is a post on the front door about disinfecting protocols; We don't believe they are following that. We would not recommend this place and will never be back. read more

Had a wonderful Mother's Day dinner at Charlie's Ocean Grill. We started off with cocktails. I had the dirty which is a traditional dirty martini however it had jalapeño peppers for that extra spice. We had king crab legs which were delicious and they came split so we did not have to fight to get out the sweet meat that was inside. My daughter had the grilled octopus salad which had the delicious charcoal Taste on the octopus.I then had the surf and turf which was delicious. The filet mignon was cooked to perfection and had that charcoal taste. I also tasted the rack of lamb which again was cooked well.For dessert we had the chocolate lava cake which was delicious and had enough vanilla ice cream for all of us to share I would definitely recommend Charlies ocean grill it was a wonderful choice for Mother's Day dinner and hope to return again soon read more

This spot offered take out menus during the Covid closure. I was so happy they remained in business because it was our GoTo place for our entire family. We live locally and often have guests and always find them accommodating groups indoors or outside on their 2 decks. I ventured out this weekend for a dinner with my hubby and happy to find them Covid safe. We are seniors and especially appreciated the dIstance seatng and efficent servIce. Most guests were seated outdoors, but several tables were offered indoors and placed far apart. Charleys is two blocks from the ocean, so you can not only see the ocean, but feel it. We got the shrimp scampi. Worst shrimp scampi I've ever had. The shrimp was not fresh and the pasta was drowning in a sour sauce. We also ordered lamb chops which were lacking in flavor. Went here for lunch to celebrate a birthday. Our waiter was horrible. The place was somewhat busy but they had enough staff to not be overwhelmed. Our waiter barely came by to check on us. Meanwhile, we noticed the other wait staff constantly checking on their tables. Especially the female waiter with short blonde hair. I wish we had her. On top of that, we asked our waiter to put a candle on the dessert so we can sing happy birthday to our aunt. Did he do that for us? Absolutely not. He just kept walking around, singing, acting like he owns the place. One of the managers came by to ask how everything was and after we complained she didn't even apologize, just told us she'll take the desserts off the bill. Safe to say next time we're in Long Branch we'll be dining at Rooney's or McLoone's. read more

Sunday afternoon and I wanted to watch the giants game. So, we took our bikes to come to Charlie's. Left the house at the end of the 1st half and arrived just at the beginning of the 2nd half (little over a mile away). We asked to be seated at the bar so I could watch the game and they accommodated us. Good choice because bar filled up very quickly. I had a bar pie and Darlene had tacos. She kept on raving about the size of the plate and how many tacos they gave us. My pie was on flat bread and a good size. We couldn't get any discounts and that was ok. We both drank soda and our bill was $25. Finished my pie just as the game ended. Btw, I also ordered their apple cake to go. Darlene are the ice cream and whipped cream while I took the dessert home. Everything came up smelling like roses. Bar food was great, service was great too and nothing was out of place. I'll go back! read more

Set your expectations correctly and you will have enjoyable meal here. Lamb, Drunken Clams. Fish N Chips specifically the fish was done correctly. Only complaints here were the fries and onion rings were overly done as you can see here. Hard and lacking seasoning which is why there salt and pepper on the table. Otherwise outside of "fries and rings", everything was cooked well. This place is better than any seafood chains and chain restaurants in general. My only tip of advice is you're just looking to snack on things and drink, the fried items might leaving you desiring other things. I dont recommend the fries or onion rings here unless what I had was a one off bad batch? Good service and attention overall. read more

A medium burger came out well done (likely was precooked); fish and chips were soggy, gross and inedible; fish sandwich was served on a stale roll; and shrimp scampi was drowned in lemon juice. So I'm here in NJ for work. Sorry didn't take pictures of the food. We had the Calamari the lemon sauce was to die for. The Calamari was cooked to perfection. (Best I've ever had). The Voodoo shrimp was a little spicy but very yummy. My husband ordered the Stuffed porkchop and was in heaven. I ordered the grilled Salmon and veggies. The salmon was grilled just right . I can't say enough about the food, atmosphere and waiterss. Everyone has been very nice. If we come back to Long Branch we will definitely be coming back here. read more

Had not been here in years- since before the renovations Brought a friend from California who just moved here. Told him how great the food was and how they specialized (used to) in prime rib. So, of course, he ordered it- was brown all the way through for mid rare not right. Had zero flavor. My scallops were delicious but the side dish of Brussels sprouts were awful and I did not pay for them. Drinks were good but expensive. Our waiter, was brutally honest. While appreciated, is never a good sign when you're told not to order certain things!! He said he was hungover and that he needed sleep. Again, funny but not great quality in a server. I can give stars for the service only. Our waiter was pleasant and attentive. The food was another story... We went for dinner on a Saturday night. Very disappointing. The sauce which was prepared for the "Fish Francaise" tasted and texture as if they used corn starch to thicken, and made with some kind of lemon flavoring- couldn't be real lemons. The other dinners were... "so- so". Not even "pretty good". It's a shame. It's obvious that they care about the service... a manager spent plenty of time on the floor observing. Kudos for that! Went here for a dinner party July 2014. Nice location near the water and the atmosphere was rather pleasant. The food was decent - noting to write home about. The big thing was the service. We have a group of about 15 people and the waitress was not able to keep up with us at all. Empty glasses and plates remained in the table for 90 minutes. They forgot appetizers and we didn't even get a chance to say anything. Just drop plates and run! That seemed too be the theme of the evening. What might have been a great dining experience just didn't pan out that way. There are plenty of other places around the shore area with better food and better service. Update Feb 2018: Recently had dinner here for a friends birthday. The service again was horrendous! We had two older ladies take care of us. I couldn't tell you their names because they never bothered to introduce themselves. I requested water for the table and we received 4 glasses for 15 people. It took forever to get a drink and our plates/empty glasses stayed on the table the entire time we were there. Food- the octopus salad was actually delicious. The tuna was not. Definitely wasn't cooked rare and was a step above canned tuna. Do yourselves a favor and try another place nearby. Management should really train their staff better. I'm glad the lone bus boy was able to clear off the two tops instead of our crowded table though. read more

The lady seemed annoyed when she answered (not sure) I ordered the Mahi Mahi tacos which were overcooked. Chewy fish. The taco shells mediocre which I expected. To begin, they brought the wrong drink. They corrected that which was fine. We ordered the Bermuda chowder and we are regular travelers to Bermuda. We love Bermuda chowder. This was not Bermuda chowder. It was very bland. They skipped our appetizer and completely forgot. Our dinners arrived. My husband and I ordered the same thing. However,I ordered mine spicy and my husband ordered his mild. They switched our orders which we did not realize until the end when I mentioned that mine was not spicy at all. After my son sampled both of ours, he said "daddy's was way spicier". In addition, the bus boy rammed into my chair not once but twice with no apologies. Then he went on to debate with the server about switching our orders in front of us. Food was bland and boring . Service was much like that you would see in a low end diner or Applebee's. Go to Beach Tavern instead. Their food is amazing and service impeccable . read more

An April update to a previous review ... we went on a Friday night for a family dinner and the evening started perfect sitting right by the fireplace and enjoying a few drinks while deciding dinner. As the evening progressed the bar became very lively with the local crowd but unfortunately got out of control with loud cursing and all sorts of semi-drunk folks. Something out of a B movie and definitely not a family environment. We made a quick exit when it became evident it will only get worse, and now we know Friday nights going into spring/summer may not be the right place for us. The service was still very good and prompt and most of our food was well prepared, fresh and tasty. Oysters, fries, onion rings, mussels, scallops, seafood pappardelle all very very good with generous pours on the wine. One dish that spoiled it was a crab stuffed flounder which was both expensive and uneatable. Our server was very nice offering alternatives and dessert to go but at that point we just wanted to get out of the loudness of the bar that was spilling into the dinning area. We don't recommend Charley's anymore but we'll get better oriented into the shore season and will keep trying it on other evenings. read more

Past this place a couple of times and figured we would try it. We sat at the bar and ordered drinks and food. First the waiter took my order then walked away and didn't take my husbands order. We had to call him back to get my husbands order in. We had raw clams as an appy. They were clean but a few weren't shucked well. I order the ahi tuna, seared, rare, with lemon sauce. It came out medium well. Not good at all. The sauce was good though. My husband ordered the prime rib medium rare, baked potato with butter cheese and bacon, his came out medium, well not butter on his potato completely dry. Drink were ok. Not consistent among the bartenders. Probably will not return. read more

Went yesterday for a nice dinner and I have to say I was so impressed with how this place handled things. As you enter they have hand sanitizer you must use before entering, only wear face masks going in and out of the building, all servers wore masks and were super friendly and attentive, paper menus, and plenty of outdoor seating. The only suggestion I would make is to maybe have rocks or seashells to hold down the menus on the table on windy days. The food was delicious! Got the appetizer mussels and the salmon special and it was perfect!! Definitely would go back again!! read more

The seating area was ripped and the upholstery needed to be cleaned. The food was ok, I had the seafood paradelle ( spelling) and it was supposed to have pieces of lobster in it which was very minimal and the mussels tasted fishy. For $32 it wasn't worth it. To top it off I was given grated cheese but the cheese was stuck in the holes and wouldn't come out. I had to unscrew the top and it was disturbing to see it so caked up. My boyfriend had the special menu which was halibut. His dish was good. Not impressed at all with food and will not be returning. read more

So google had decent reviews for this place and yelp said avoid it. We shoulda listened to yelp. We were in the area and starving- (ya know how everything tastes better when you're starving? Not here) and found Charley's. I gave the two stars bc the view of the sunset was pretty and the people were nice enough. It was not busy at all when we came and yet the service was soooo slow. At one point, after waiting 15 min for the server to come out again after our meals were done-I had to literally hunt her down coz I just wanted the check and to leave so bad. For $60, we got shrimp drowned in BBQ sauce, the most tasteless fish and chips ever, and dry mahi mahi tacos. Such an unsatisfying dinner. There was literally no seasoning on anything-not even salt! 35 of us who graduated high school together decided to mingle for a drink and maybe something to eat. Charley's was decided on. I didn't make the decision but hoped it was better than the 3 stars it apparently earned. There's a large oval shaped bar so we pretty much took over the whole thing. The wait staff was harried, I assume because of the unexpected crowd on a Wednesday night so getting a drink wasn't easy. The tap selection was mediocre but I got a Carton Boat Beer and a Harpoon Nitro Stout that weren't too bad. One of us got the calamari and said it was pretty good but no one else seemed to want to eat. After asking a few people if they were going to eat, they said the food was pretty bad. I didn't eat so I can't comment on the food so all of us decided to go across the street for pizza. Although it wasn't a bad experience, and you may just enjoy it more but it's just that there are too many, I feel, better places nearby so I wouldn't be compelled to return. read more

My family lives next door so I frequent because of location. However, the way I was treated by the staff tonight was beyond unprofessional, rude and I'm appalled by their behavior. Not only was the waitress rude but the "manager" was surprisingly so. I had some dinner plans for tonight and wasn't finding it easy to make reservations during this Covid 19 summer. I thought of Charley's and they were able to accommodate me at 5:30. It was early but it worked for us. All I can say is it was superb from start to finish. The tables on the deck, with the ocean breezes, we had a sense of privacy, we were able to talk, the food was excellent, from the potato blintzes, to the Yellowfin Tuna, to a chocolate Lava Cake with ice cream for desserts, and nicest of all were the man who answered the phone call and the waitperson, Beth, who made the night a very special and memorable one. Kind, personable and professional. Charley's has always been great, and they are now even greater with restaurants only able to serve at outdoor tables. Thanks! read more

It was the Fourth of July weekend and I should've known. Charley's Ocean Grill was not too crowded. We waited for an outdoor table patiently(we had stopped by and requested it earlier that day). When the table finally opened up, the rude hostess purposely gave it to another group. She had such a sour miserable face from the moment we got there. Just super nasty! As a representative of the restaurant , she is a poor choice! We decided to leave. We planned on ordering 2 seafood towers and 5 entrees plus drinks and dessert. Probably would have spent $500! I'm glad we left because the food that went by looked like it was just thrown on the plate. I would never recommend this place to anyone!!! My sister booked us at this restaurant to celebrate a family birthday, so we had a table of 8. There is ample parking, although it's the off-season, so I don't know how full it gets in the summer. While I saw handicapped parking spots, I didn't see a wheelchair ramp, so I'm not certain how someone with a wheelchair would get in there. We were seated on the first floor level, so no view, which was fine. The interior is attractive and airy and the bathrooms were clean. The waitstaff is decent, but not great. There was a bit of derision because I have allergies, and they don't seem to know what's in their food, which leads me to believe it's mostly pre-made or frozen and then heated. The timing of the appetizers and then the entrees was good, though. The chicken wings were excellent, as was the garlic sauce that came with them. I had a shrimp cocktail with 3 jumbo shrimp, which were fine, but their cocktail sauce was so awful, I just used the sauce from the chicken wings for dipping my shrimp. My spouse's lobster roll was watery and tasteless, but the french fries that came with it were excellent. The fried calamari appetizer was fine, and the banana pepper sauce was amazing and had a nice kick to it. The Mahi Mahi tacos were huge, as were the Fish and Chips. The turkey paninis were passable. The prime rib sandwich was good, and came with a nice au jus. read more

The pierogis as an appetizer hit the spot (crumbled bacon and onion on top with a light crispness on the outside just like my mom makes them). I also had the crab dip. A perfect blend of lump crab meat, cream cheese and spinach. The chips were fresh too (always a plus). Their burgers are off the chart. They are big enough to share between two people and it was made just the way I asked. I hear the seafood is to die for, definitely on my list to try on my next stop in. We headed to Long Branch for the afternoon to check out the beach and a couple happy hour spots. Once waking into Charley's I fell in love with the bright and sleek atmosphere. We arrived around 2:30pm so we arrived too early for happy hour but we still enjoyed ourselves. This place is located near the beach but not on the beach. You can see the water but it's nowhere near oceanfront dining like some of the other eateries in the area. We sat at the bar which had a good number of people around it. There is also an outside seating area but we opted to sit at the bar. There were plenty of televisions for your viewing pleasure. I'm sure it's a great place to watch any sports games. The bartender seemed a little cold and unfriendly but she did her job. We ordered the crackling calamari which was absolutely delicious! We were even talking about it the next morning. I actually wish I had some right now as I'm writing this review. YES! It was that good. It was served in a light pepper sauce that was absolutely mouth watering. I'd definitely return and would recommend it as well as the calamari to others. read more
