OH. MY. GOD. I was there a little over a week ago with my Mom; She ordered a cheeseburger and I ordered a breakfast burrito. Walking in, this place was bright and cheery with large windows and BEYOND helpful staff. We were seated and served quickly, which was incredible. I don't think the serving staff allowed for my drink to even get 1/2 done before it was refilled again (awesome!!). My Mom and I split some onion rings and when I tell you that they were excellent? Believe me. They were absolutely exceptional. We STILL talk about our fabulous meal as well, as the cheeseburger was cooked perfectly and my burrito was stuffed full with a bunch of breakfast goodness. this is a MUST-STOP PLACE IN GALENA!! read more

Charlie's is a restaurant located in a busy touristy area in Galena, IL. We enjoyed our breakfast and it came with plenty of food! I had the country fried steak with hash browns and couldn't finish it. But I tried! Loved the Sourdough Toast. My wife had the Irish Benedict which was okay, but the eggs were a little over done. When it's -5 degrees out and you want to warm up, this is the place to be. This is my favorite place to eat in Galena. Everything is good here. Last week I had the Catfish for breakfast (recommended by my server Jim). I forgot to take a pic of it. It was outstanding. We walked in and were sat quickly. We were asked as we were sitting for our drink order. This place is very bright and cheery with beautiful pictures on the wall. We order our breakfast which came out very quickly. I ordered a biscuit and gravy omelette which was huge, hot and very tasty. I usually don't like the potatoes that come with it, but I got the home fries and they were so good I ate them all. The omelette itself had some of the best sausage gravy I have ever tasted. The place was pretty packed when we walked in, but we were seated almost instantly. It was Saturday brunch so the place was Hoppin with lots of locals and visitors. Everyone was dressed up for Saint Patty's day to give it a fun vibe for the ambience. We ordered Irish coffees and bloody Mary's to start. Our waitress was quick and we ordered right away. And in a short amount of time, our food was already out. There were many things to choose from, and everything was delicious. Portion sizes were huge so you could definitely split. We had a nice visit to Charlie's Place Eatery on the Saturday before Easter. While the food and table service were great... For some reason the host chose to seat our party of four at a large table with another party. The choice to seat us with another party was kind of confusing. There were multiple four person tables open that we could see (Charlie's isn't that big). If they needed wiped and reset it should have only taken a couple minutes. The host made it sound like if we wanted to wait for an open table there would be an extended wait when I asked. Not sure why... So anyway... We were seated at the 10 person table with another party of four. Our server presented us with menus and our drink order was taken. Two of our party ordered burgers, one ordered a corned beef reuben, and I ordered the catfish strips. The onion rings looked epic so two of us went with those as our side. There is a $3 upcharge for the onion rings...totally worth it! Our female companions thought their burgers were good. Nothing special though... I would HIGHLY recommend the catfish strips and onion rings! Without the deal with our seating this would have easily been a five star review based solely on my meal. We had not been in Charlie's Place yet, and after some libations at the Blaum Bros, we were hungry! We stopped in at a not-so-busy time, given it was between lunch and dinner, so there were not many people inside. Service was fast and very friendly, and the food was so delicious. If you're looking for a nice diner experience with excellent food and service, stop here. There were plenty of seats, so even on a busy day or time, you're likely to get in and get something to satisfy your hunger. I know it's a quick review, but it's definitely to the point. We experienced great people and great food and had a great time inside, and we will be back to share other things on the menu in the future. Charlie's place is new to Galena as of yesterday but apparently had another location that had been in business for 20 years 10 miles away in Hanover, Illinois that had fantastic Yelp reviews ( same name ). Place presents like a diner with 20 tables. Casual feel. Breakfast/ Brunch menu is extensive and lots of options available from a variety of omelettes, skillets, waffles, etc. Service was small town friendly. They are working on the kinks of getting the right amount of kitchen staff and servers so owner warned us might take 30-40 minutes at this time to get our food We weren't in a hurry so fine with it and appreciated the heads up ( it really didn't end up taking that long). I ordered the big omelette with ham and veggies and requested half eggs/ half egg whites. It was perfect. My husband ordered the polish skillet and thought it was really good as well . Highly recommend this spot for a sit down hearty casual breakfast while in the Galena area. Most people will recommend the Galena Bakeshop around here for breakfast and while that is adorable, they have no seating. Otto's ( also in Galena ) is where to go for a more quaint, upscale, creative breakfast or brunch in my opinion but this is your best bet for a tradicional diner like place with an extensive menu in the best location ( right on main street) in Galena. Drip coffee was not good and I saw they had a cappuccino machine instead of making them fresh. I think prices were high for a diner. Ambiance was loud. It was not a relaxing breakfast at all, with people hustling everywhere, large groups chatting, and a long line of people standing waiting to be seated. With that said service was good and they were very attentive. They 'absolutely do not allow strollers', so I had to eat holding my sleeping newborn. Another thing that bothered me was that I ordered a meal for my two toddlers to split and saw that I was charged a plate splitting fee upon paying. They are toddlers, they barely eat anything which is why I get them something WE would eat (and always end up eating).
