I feel pretty lukewarm about this place. If you are a true foodie, you might want to check out other options. I had the sausage supreme skillet and it was okay. When I ordered rye toast they charged extra and then ruined it by saturating it with a liquid margarine....very oily. The place could definitely use some updating to the decor. My daughter and I were in Dubuque for the weekend. We ate twice at this location, and both times were extremely pleased! All staff were super friendly, and helpful. (They all wore masks, if you are concerned about COVID.) It was pretty full, obviously the locals know the place is great. If you're used to American diner fare, it's what you would expect, except everything is extremely fresh! (E.g., the eggs tasted like local farm-fresh eggs, etc.) Sitting by the kitchen, you could hear someone scrambling the eggs by hand every few minutes! Skillet breakfasts are perfectly sized (large, but not wastefully so), pancakes were rich and fluffy, bacon was perfectly cooked, and coffee was fresh, hot, and plentiful! "Down home cooking that sticks to your ribs," as they say on the farm. I had the southern sunrise breakfast: bacon, sausage, eggs, and biscuits and gravy. Plus coffee, of course. Watch out for the little creamer cups: you don't wanna accidentally add French vanilla to your coffee like I did this morning. I've also had the meat lovers skillet, which was tasty and filling as well. Friendly, but not intrusive service. Good place to sit and read or visit with friends and family. read more

The food is not good. My daughter got the French toast with strawberries and whipped cream. The strawberries were not fresh. The strawberries looked like "mushed" strawberries. Our waitress was not friendly. The restaurant was dirty inside. read more

Personally, I was not a fan. Service: Our waitress was very distant, she spilled coffee on our table, and didn't offer to clean it up. She left the check on the table without saying anything. Even my boyfriend said she wasn't the friendliest and he is usually oblivious to most things. Food: I got a pancake with hash browns. I asked for cheddar cheese on my hash browns, and came with American, figure it's not worth the fight to get it changed. The pancakes tasted like pancakes, my boyfriends omelet was average. if you want to take your chances, the restaurant is just dirty, fRon the glasses to the tables, we sat next to the waitress station which smelled like a dirty dish rag. the food came out one plate at a time, over 20 minutes; my order came out twice and the kids pancake last 15 minutes after and was cold. never brought toast til the bill cam. I am seldom motivated to write reviews, good or bad. But today was so frustrating I felt it was my duty. My wife and I were in Dubuque for a short vacation and wanted to grab a good, local breakfast. Reviews here were solid so we decided to give it a try. We visited several restaurants in Dubuque (first time we have attended any in person since COVID 19 hit), and every one did a great job with social distancing, wearing masks, etc. Until we got to Sunshine. We were greeted and seated immediately by a young lady wearing no mask. There were no closed tables, and we were surrounded by other customers on three sides, not more than 3-4 feet away. Our waitress, also wearing no mask, came by quickly and gave us menus and water, and said she would return shortly for our orders. 7-8 minutes later she had not returned. During this time we realized that no employees and no customers were wearing masks. I was also staring at cobwebs on the back of my wife's booth seat. We decided we were not comfortable or happy with the service and left. Nobody said a word. It's very strange to write a bad review about lack of COVID planning, but in today's world I feel it is appropriate. read more

My husband politely asked the waitress if she was glad to be back to work, mostly just making small talk. "No, she snapped, " for this? It's not worth my time or the owner's time for this."
