Just go to Joe's in Penn Hills which is close by. Much more friendly and without the attitude. Seems like they expect and almost demand giving a tip. Handing you an arctic swirl with melty drippy ice cream and dirty fingertips on the cup is just rude. I hope the owner realizes that this poor experience ends my patronage as I'm sure it has and will for many others. read more

While the ice cream is not that bad, lately it has been terrible in terms of quality and service. We enjoy the sugar free Butter Pecan however the last time I purchased it the pecans were soft as if they were stale. This time the ice cream was not packed into the cone causing the ice cream to literally fall off the cone. My wife's did the exact same thing. I was sitting in my car and attempting to catch pieces falling off the cone when most of it fell onto the drivers side floor of my vehicle. My wife entered the vehicle and sa sh was getting in the car half of hers fell off her cone. I understandably became upset and threw mine out my window onto the parking lot where's my wife threw the portion that fell of her cone out the window as well. The attendant just watched not even offering to make it right. Late last year my wife ordered a banana split. The man behind the counter advised her that he had eaten the last banana and could not make her a banana split. Then he proceeded to tell my wife of his love for bananas! Who cares? Service and product has been deteriorating for some time now. Great place for a refreshing summer dessert! They have so many unique soft serve flavors available, along with hard scoop ice cream, milkshakes, and artic swirls. It's hard to choose what to get because everything sounds delicious. I got a medium peppermint soft serve on cone. The ice cream was creamy, light, and not overly sugary. The peppermint flavor was tasty and not over powerful. It was the perfect size treat and very refreshing on a hot summer day. There are picnic tables outside for you to sit and enjoy your dessert, with and without umbrellas to stay cool from the sun. I've known about Charlie's ice cream since a child. It was one of the places my dad used to take me as a wee one and Ii very much enjoyed the last minute trips. We'd always get a soft serve with sprinkles or a crunch coat..mmmh!! Now that i'm older I know a lot more about ice cream and good toppings for that matter. I love the selection of soft serve flavors. I believe they listed about 54 different kinds. WOW so many to choose from the combinations of items you make is endless and variable. I love fruit and and nut flavored ice cream.. Sorry im not big on chocolate as so many others are.... Boo to me lol. Anywho, the last item i ordered was a mango soft serve in a waffle bowl with the crunch coat, pineapples, and a cherry shell coat. unfortunately, i was eating it halfway through when i realized that it didn't have the crunch coat on it. I went to the window and told the yound lady that they forgot my coating and she was happy to fix the order. While i waited in line a man had ordered a root beer frosty and instead they handed him a large root beer soft serve. He replied that he didn't order that and the woman said the cashier had wrote it down as a soft serve. The clerk and lady actually delivering the ice cream were two different people. Not only did the clerk mess up my order but she she did the same to another customer. The only benefit was there was no charge and he walked away with a free soft serve cone. It's a shame that customer service can bring down a review but hey it has to count towards the business itself. Some more informed clerks who can take an order properly wouldn't hurt, especially if they wrote it down. I still go here but not as often as when i was a child. They have those quarter horse riding machines outside but only one works. A woman had to ask for her money back when one horse didn't operate. Shame shame...:( read more

Our Family has been frequenting Charlie's for over 20 years and today will be the last as we will take our business elsewhere due to the utter disrespect and ignorance displayed by one of the female Employees. Upon coming up to the serving window, I was starred at without any greeting or even a "How can I help you". When I asked to order she slammed her phone down and acted annoyed when I inquired about what comes on the sundaes I was ordering as my child has an allergy to nuts. After placing my order I asked for lids informing they were to go items and she grabbed them from my hand and made several rude comments and then packaged them without the lids being sturdy causing a spill in my car. Not to mention throwing the bag out the window at me. Turns out her mother was there giving her lunch and simply stated her child must be "hangry". This young woman needs taught proper customer service and etiquette. Charlie's- maybe work on training your staff to be at bare minimum respectful to your customers as you lost another here! read more

Used to be the place to go in Monroeville, but now it's just ok. They have jumped on the "everything to everyone", with 55 flavors available in either yogurt or ice cream. And they'll tell you that the yogurt is available cup only because it's too soft for a cone. Nor sure how it works, but I imagine an ice cream Keurig style machine that makes your choice. Teaberry is a favorite and it was good. Friend had Amaretto, also good. I haven't been here in years (since the true DoleWhip went out). I probably won't go back unless its with a child. He turned to me and said it was the first time in his life he actually didn't like ice cream. Too many nuts, the ice cream was bland, and the Carmel flavor sauce weird. First visit and definitely our last. They had no chocolate ice cream!!! Seriously? I like hard and was thinking peanut butter but since they didn't have choc. then why get PB? So I decided on the Moose tracks. Vanilla with chocolate mini cups. They need to learn how to make ice cream that has flavor. I don't know what I was eating but it didn't taste like ice cream. And it was definitely old! It had crystals all thru it! Yuck! It was not smooth and creamy.... instead it was very gritty. They don't use a good high quality milk fat cream. I'm not sure if Charlie's has changed hands of ownership but the ice cream I was served tonight there is literally nothing like the ice cream I've had there in previous years. I always get the German chocolate soft serve and and it's been very good and consistent for years, but tonight, my ice cream literally ended up in the trash. The flavoring was SO SO blatantly and disgustingly artificial with a strange after taste- nothing like I've had there before. The ice cream itself wasn't even remotely good soft serve - had a weird taste and watery texture (maybe this was some sort of bad frozen yogurt?!) and skimpy on the serving sizes. My German chocolate cone was a very weird dark brown artificial color (have never seen it look that way before in all the years I've been there - maybe this was some sort of fake chocolate?) and had a very overwhelming fake coconut taste. I took two bites of it and threw it away. The other flavor we tried was the "chocolate fudge brownie" which literally tasted like flavorless vanilla ice cream, and two of the three cones we bought ended up in the trash, as well as the arctic swirl which was also a disappointment. The "mediums" here have also turned into smalls and apparently it's ok to serve an arctic swirl cup that is literally half filled. So disappointing for a place that used to be a go-to for great soft serve in the area. We won't be back - Charlie's, you have gone severely downhill in the consistency and quality of what you are serving - WHAT HAPPENED?! read more

Good place for a quick bite of flavorful ice cream. The mediums and smalls were very close in size (maybe even the same?!) but the soft serve's creamy texture was amazing. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their ice cream, and our favorite soft serve was German chocolate. The hard ice cream had an average texture (not the creamiest), but the flavor was delicious. The service was fantastic, and the people working the shop were most likely students. Overall, this ice cream shop is great for the creamy soft serve's wonderful flavors! read more

Gross! I'm so disappointed! I got an arctic blast (supposed to be like a blizzard). They asked me if I wanted whipped cream and a cherry... it was literally more runny than a milkshake-even the whipped cream! It was dripping all over the place as she was handing it to me. I've only lived in Monroeville for two years so this is my second summer with Charlie's. Last summer I always ordered the same thing: one scoop of cookie dough in a waffle cone. The ice cream was delicious and they were always generous with cookie dough pieces. This summer has unfortunately been a different story. On the occasions when they actually have hard cookie dough ice cream, (I visited three different times when they were out,) the ice cream I was served had little to no cookie dough pieces of speak of. This sounds petty but I keep returning hoping for the experience I had last summer! They put lots of pieces in the artic swirl, so I can't imagine it would be too difficult to mix some more in to the hard ice cream. I may not return until next summer, hoping for a return to form. read more

Awful service!! Me and my boyfriend literally are boycotting this place since new pre teens have apparently taken over this place. My heart is torn since I have gone to Charlie's since I was a little girl and my mom would take me here for a long time! I wanted to show my boyfriend this place since they usually have great tasting smooth ice cream and a little back balcony. I don't know if it is under new management but it is completely flipped upside down! New awful off red paint jobs to the benches and they removed the back patio. Cheaper bland ice cream flavors and unfixed kids rides in the front!! Most of the time the flavors are not available, This red head teen is about fifteen years old asks me what I want. I haven't been here in some years I look at there new sharpie written menus ( I don't mind I like vintage ma and pa places) I order the German chocolate and two of them with jimmies it is about eight bucks some how and now they include a mandated tip on my card What the f??!!This is an ice cream joint not a bar!?!? Her and her friends are laughing taking there good old time to make two ice creams!! We are told to wait to the side waiting and waiting. We wait for the giggling teens to make two ice creams about twenty minutes ! She gives them to us and they are not chocolate at al! This line is forming and it is almost mid parking lot! They are screwing around really! I am like this is not chocolate at all!
