Charlie's Jeans is a nice, clean, stylish boutique at 2nd and Market in Olde City. Their specialty, of course, is designer jeans. They've got Sevens, Joe's Jeans, and many more. They've also got some pretty cool tops and accessories, the displays are well-done, and the sales clerks are friendly and helpful. The only downside of this place is that designer jeans are very expensive. Sevens, I was told by the sales dude, run from about $140-200 each, and I can imagine that the other brands are similarly priced. Needless to say, I browsed the day I was there and didn't buy anything, but I hope to return someday when I have some cash to buy the perfect pair of jeans. Of course, I might be 40 by then and will be too old to be able to pull those cool jeans off anymore... I have one major gripe: I went in while they were having a sale. Everything was on sale EXCEPT FOR JEANS. Since they really are a jeans store, I think that sucks. I'd be more likely to buy a pair of jeans there if they were on sale because you can find the same designer jeans (although not as many styles) on sale at places like Off Fifth or Last Call Neiman Marcus. And I don't think it would kill Charlie's to knock $20 bucks off their jeans now and then. Otherwise, though, this store is really cool. read more

I have to say, I'm incredibly disappointed with my experience at Charlie's a couple of weeks ago. I was in the market for some new jeans and happened to be in the area on business so I stopped in during a free afternoon. I was immediately accosted by a salesperson--I was not allowed to browse by myself, but then of course not, because the styles aren't even marked in a way that would allow me to identify what I might want to try on. I reluctantly let her give me a style to try. Fast forward 40 minutes and about a dozen styles, and we'd finally found something decent. The jeans were so long I needn't have worn shoes, but she assured me that they could alter them and reattach the original hem. I told her I needed to think about it given the cost (after alterations it would have been over $200 for a single pair) and asked for some space to do so. The amount of space I received was about 10 feet--she stayed right outside the dressing room, waiting for me. I decided against it and got ready to leave, but she went for the hard sell--offered me a huge discount (and puppy dog eyes)--and I relented. She'd worn me down, and I figured these would be an investment piece. I picked up my jeans the next day, but didn't try them on until I got home. When I did, I immediately realized two things: (1) They most certainly did not reattach the original hem, so the alterations were just the same I would have been able to do on a home sewing machine. (2) The length they assured me would work for both heels and flats is actually too long even for many of my heels. Now I need to either roll them up in the back so they don't drag on the ground and have me stepping on them, or pay even more to have them re-hemmed. Now, two weeks later, I've worn them several times, hoping for the best. And guess what--the more I wear them, the more they turn into mom jeans! Tight at the waist, loose in the hip, saggy at the crotch. So much for an investment piece. Too bad there aren't any returns--I could have used that money to buy two or three pairs of better fitting jeans somewhere else, and without the pushy sales tactics. read more

I'm super picky about stores and I hate being helped... especially by men. I prefer to be left alone. Sebastian was the first man I let help me pick clothing for me - ever. And... years later, he still picks jeans for me better than I can do it for myself. If you go into Charlie's... he'll indulge you. He'll let you try all the ones you choose... supportively... but he'll sneak in a few others... and you'll buy one of those... or two. I never buy one of the ones I pick. I've stopped bothering. These days when I go to Charlie's, I pick up a few T-shirts and if I want jeans, I just ask. It's faster and more efficient. If I like something, I just ask him if it will fit me. He knows. Been in the store 3 times and each time I am bombarded by 3 sales people. There is a fine line between good customer service and up your ass. Nobody needs it. If they are a type of person who want a personal shopping experience they will pull a sales person and ask for help. All I went in for was to browse and see what they have and I have sales people coming at me left and right with shirts and jeans saying these will look cute on me. Considering I haven't even picked up one thing to try on-It feels desperate. This is the only place I'll shop for jeans. I started coming to Charlie's years ago, and they'd always hook me up with the perfect 7 For All Mankind jeans. Fast forward a few years later and I'm hooked on the Sebastian McCall. They're not cheap at $179 a pair (+ $20 if you want them hemmed), but these are jeans you'll wear for years. Charlie's excels at customer service. Within minutes they fit me with the perfect jeans. A few months ago I walked in and was immediately assisted. I stated that I wanted a darker wash, straight leg, medium rise jean and within about 30 seconds, I was handed some Sebastian McCalls to try on. At first I thought oh great, they're hawking their own brand of jeans...I'll politely try them on and then ask for a better brand. I was WRONG. These jeans are perfect. I told them that I wanted them hemmed to wear with flats. They did this SAME DAY on a Saturday! I recently went in again and said 'I want these exact jeans that I'm wearing but in a different wash'. The sales associate didn't even ask questions. She said 'ok so those are the Sebastian McCall straight leg, here are our other washes'. Smooth & efficient. Ten minutes later and I'm walking out with exactly what I wanted. I have a slim waist. but there's some junk in this trunk, so sometimes jeans/pants shopping is frustrating. Not at Charlie's. I went here because so many of my coworkers raved about the service. My first experience was nothing to talk about, but that was only because I didn't talk to Sebastian. With the girls who work here are quite nice, it's Sebastian who can take one look at you and pull a pair of jeans that will be perfect for you, no matter what your jean dilemma might be. The pair I left with were a cream-colored corduroy Citizens pant, hemmed. I don't shop here regularly due to my lack of excess cash to spend on clothes -- this makes me sad. I love Charlie's... not really because of the adorable clothes that fill the store, but more so because of Sebastian. I bought my first pair of "expensive jeans", as I called them back in the day, at Charlie's and Sebastian helped me pick them out. I believe this was back in 2002. I have gone years between visits... and every time I walk into the store, Sebastian remembers me and says hi, as if I'm his most frequent customer. A few weeks ago, I walked into the store. I'm pretty sure I hadn't been there in over three years. Sebastian said hi and asked how I was. So... this may be a review of the guy who runs the place... but that's ok with me. Terrible. Went in at night and extremely pushy salesperson. I ended up buying jeans against my better judgment as they were pricey for a random self-created self-promoted brand (these are not designer jeans and not jeans that are similar to designer jeans at a lower price). The salesperson said they would stretch and were the right size. I wore them around at home and they did not stretch in the right places, but stretched in the wrong places. I tried to return the jeans for refund within 24 hours of purchase, and was told a lie - that their system was unable to refund money. That cannot be true - no credit card processor can do that. Now I have a huge credit to a store that I never want to shop at. All because I was made a promise that did not stand up. Terrible customer service. I wish they would stand behind their product and make a customer happy by doing a refund, instead of lying about some credit card processing issue. read more

As a 5'1 tall girl with curves, finding denim is a nightmare. On the suggestion of other fashion friends, I took myself to Charlies and just said, I am willing to pay $200, please show me what you think would be most flattering and not require complete surgery in order to fit me in the length. After trying on 5 or 6 pairs, they found them! Hemming wasn't needed. I walked out feeling like a supermodel in my Citizens for Humanity. So, sure, it costs a pretty penny. You can buy 5 pairs of jeans that do all the wrong things, or one pair of jeans that does everything right. After doing the former for most of my life, I'd like to recommend the latter. After all, the know their denim! My only reason for not getting to 5 stars, items go on sale constantly and I wish I would have followed that more before buying my very expensive stuff. Anyone who knows me, knows I shop at Charlie's Jeans religiously, and bring my friends shopping there too. Charlie's has all the styles and brands I love, and must have! I rarely write reviews about retail stores, but HOLY JEANS, Charlie's knows what they're doing. In the weeks leading up to my engagement photo shoot, I spent many moons planning what outfits I wanted to wear. Of course, one option was to go for a classic skinny jeans/boots combo, but alas, all of my skinny jeans looked gross and just weren't going to make the cut. In the interest of spending even more money (because I had obviously already dropped hundreds of dollars on possible ensembles), I decided to see if Charlie's could live up to the hype and help me find my perfect pair of denims. I walked into the store and was immediately greeted by a friendly and helpful saleswoman. She asked what I was looking for, I told her a pair of skinnies, and after looking me up and down, she walked over to the wall of pants, pulled down a pair and told me to try them on. She described how they should fit and how I should feel in them - mentally, physically and emotionally - and sure enough, these jeans were magical. I have never looked this good in a pair of pants. I didn't give her any indication of my size, and I was actually wearing what could have very well been a potato sack, so I continue to be amazed at how she even knew what my body looked like to get her measurements so spot on. Over the next 20 minutes, I tried on one other size of skinnies and one pair of flares, and actually also put on a few different tops and shirts so I could get a sense of how the pants would look in a variety of outfits. The saleswoman explained the store's alteration and return policy, but I never felt any pressure to make a purchase. I really got the sense that she understood dropping $200 on a pair of jeans is a bit daunting, and might not be in everyone's "impulse buy" wheelhouse, which I truly appreciated. Despite having such a positive experience, I didn't buy any jeans that day...but you better believe every time I put on my regular ol' dungarees, I have pangs of longing for those Charlie's jeans. read more

I bought a pair of jeans today at Charlie's Jeans...and I must say, I had a good experience! I knew I was going to spend an arm and a leg, so it's good to have that expectation in mind before you walk into the store. I said I wanted a dark, super skinny jean. She could tell just by looking at me what my size was. The first pair I tried on I ended up buying! Fit me like a glove. I also got a 10% discount for signing up for their mailing list, which was a huge perk. I have a feeling I wont be buying my next pair of jeans elsewhere! UPDATE: About a week after I bought my jeans, I found a rip in the upper thigh area. I have NO IDEA how it got there, and nearly burst out in tears! I know Charlie's has a strict return policy and was so nervous they couldnt do anything for me. I called and explained, and they had me come into the store. When i got there, they had the exact same pair of jeans ready for me and exchanged them on the spot. No questions asked. I love Charlie's!! Sebastian McCall is truly the only man who knows how to fit a woman's body! I LIVE in his jeans, shirts, and dresses and am so thankful for this Philly gem's goodies :) I have to knock off a star purely for customer service. Every time I go into the store, unless the owner or manager are helping me, I feel extremely suffocated by overeager salespeople shoving clothing in my face. I'm short and curvy, which makes finding jeans that fit nearly impossible. I went to Charlie's with one pair of jeans that I needed to have hemmed and figured I'd pick out a few more. Liz helped me to find three additional pairs that fit well and looked good. Two pairs were Sebastian McCall's, which are SO COMFY, and one pair was JBrand. I definitely paid a pretty penny for my jeans, but know they look great and will stand up over the long run. The only reason I'm not giving Charlie's five stars is because I ran into some problems with alterations. It took THREE rounds of alterations for all four pairs of my jeans to be the correct length. The store employees were apologetic and made the multiple rounds of alterations as smooth as possible. Talk about GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE! Overall, I am very happy with my purchase. I would normally feel bad about spending as much as I did on my jeans, but I don't because I got exactly what I wanted. I agree with the other reviewers who say you can spend $$$$ on one pair of jeans and look great or spend $$ on five pairs and look like crap. read more

I walk by this store everyday and finally decided to go in one day just to browse. When I say the sale associate was literally following us and standing behind us the entire time I am NOT EVEN KIDDING. We told her multiple times that we're just looking but she literally was right behind us the entire time and wouldn't leave our side. Made us so uncomfortable so we left. Will never go back. So I'll admit, I'm a very picky shopper. My body type is size 10 jeans, 34d on top, but otherwise pretty slim. I wear small/medium tops, so proportionately it's pretty difficult to find clothes that aren't too baggy, too tight, too short, etc. That being said, Charlie's jeans is my favorite place to go for tops. I haven't tried the jeans, I'm an American eagle girl and not much is going to change that. Im generally shop for most of my things about once a year. I'm a 'capsule' dresser before the term became cool, and buy stuff I can wear all seasons. I spent three and a half hours in forever 21 on tuesday and left with pretty much nothing because their clothes don't fit me correctly. I remembered having luck with Charlie's last year so I decided to try it again. I usually don't like when people pick out clothes for me because they never get the right size, but the woman at the store was so helpful and picked out great pieces that look amazing on me. Yes, it's pricy, but as someone who shops so little and gets the most out of my items, I know it was a good purchase and I can't wait to add these staples to my closet! read more

This store was amazing. I'm really tall and lanky, so it's near impossible for me to find clothes, especially jeans, that fit me and are long enough. My friend told me to try out this store, and even though I was hesitant, I gave it a try. After looking at me for 5 seconds, the girls on the floor collected some jeans for me to try on. They all fit perfectly. I was shocked. The clothing there is a bit pricey, but totally worth it. Very good customer service, too. I will definitely be a return customer. . read more

I'd like to apologize to my Seven's, Citizen's, and JBrands for neglecting them since I purchased my Sebastian McCall's. I LOVE jeans and these are by far the best fitting pair I have ever owned. The sales girls weren't lying when they said they would keep their shape either. I've worn them all week and they still fit and feel like I just washed them. Plus the girls were super nice and patient with me when I wanted to try on every brand in the store (thanks again!). Came in to browse. I was the only one in the store with the two saleswomen. I kid you not, it seemed every time I touched an article of clothing one of them would comment. I smiled and let them know I was browsing. As I walked further into the store I felt like they were staring at me and they were following me. I began to think they thought i was going to steal something. It felt so uncomfortable that I lost my interest in purchasing a blouse. What an awkward experience! To be fair, this is not exactly my type of store. I tend to get my jeans through my younger sister who works at American Eagle and thus receives 40% discount. I would need the combination of two younger sister's discounts to be able to afford the stuff at Charlie's. What drew me in was a pair of shoes in the window. With no price tag to be found, I asked "how much?" "$195." "Are they lined in gold!?" I returned. At that point the clerk knew I was not buying anything and quickly ignored me. Great service but jeans last for less than a month. I bought a super expensive pair of jeans and had great service! Sebastian helped me find a pair of jeans I could wear out on the town and to casual Friday. I had a little sticker shock, but I looked great and figured I would wear the jeans for two years (you know, like my Levi's or even a few pairs I bought at Target). I was wrong. In the last two months, I have returned two pairs of the jeans I was fitted for because the thighs have worn through. Each time, the clerk has looked me up and down and said, that happens to some women. I'm not the thinnest girl, but I am not obese. If you fit me for jeans, I should be able to walk to work in them with out fear they will wear out. The reason I am writing today because I am looking at the third pair and it is going to happen again. They said they would patch them, but seriously these are jeans! They shouldn't require monthly maintenance trips to the shop. I have never ventured into a boutique before. J Crew jeans and Banana Republic jeans on sale were the extent of my jean shopping. Going in, I figured I would just try on jeans and once I found a style (or two or three) I liked, I would save up for them (starving artists do like wearing nice things, too) and have attractive jeans accentuating my positive qualities. I found the associate amazingly helpful and everyone else there made me feel comfortable. I've only got one pair :( but I plan on getting plenty more once I save more money. This store has fantastic clothes but you can only look at them while enduring an onslaught of pushy sales tactics. It's crazy that you'll be looking at jeans or a shirt and the salesperson will bring you something completely not what you're interested in, at all, and try to sell it to you. Wouldn't it make more sense to let customers look, figure out what they're interested in, and then suggest something that remotely resembles that? I lost some weight recently and was in desperate need of some new jeans for the spring. I've walked by the store front in Old City many times but didn't know what it was about. So, when I did a search on Yelp for a good place to by jeans and Charlies popped up, I decided it was finally time to go into this store. I went during my lunch break from work and there was no one else in the store so I had the sales people/designer all to myself. There was a younger woman working who started to help me find jeans but then a man took over. I didn't find out until the very end that this was The Sebastian. He asked me a few questions about what I was looking for and I gave him some of my preferences and he picked up a pair and asked me to try them on. Without sizing me. No tape measure, no nothing. So I put them on and they were almost a perfect fit. He's like the Jean Whisperer. I came out of the dressing room and he took a quick glance, realized what was "wrong" with that pair, handed me another and I ended up buying the second pair I tried on (which just happened to be a pair of Sebastian McCalls...). Now, I had some reservations about the jeans that I ended up buying. Namely, they are a slightly lower rise than I am used to and I was worried about a muffin top. However, Sebastian insisted they would stretch out and form to my shape. He told me to give it a little time. Well, it's about 3-4 weeks later and, while they are not at perfection quite yet, they have gotten roomier and more comfortable. I just hope they continue to stretch a little. *Advice- if you go to the website and sign up for their email list, you get 10% off your first purchase. I miss this storeS shopped here a lot when I lived in Philly. I have more than five jeans from them. I only buy jeans I never tried the other clothes and not interested. But jeans they fit real well and great quality plus the price of made in USA. I also love that they offer to return the old jeans and give you credit towards a new pair. So it is a good way to feel environmentally friendly zero waste and recycling mindset. About the reviews I read about salespeople being too close. Actually they do that because this brand is known for fitting so they are trying to help explain how things work and in my experience I don't find them annoying like some other stores because they actually do help ! I always have them figure out the hem because they get it right every time and hassle free. I moved from Philly and I am going for a quick visit this week and I called them to check if they still do the return jeans for a credit and I am happy I can bring back my first pair from a couple years ago which I cannot fit in anymore and they offered to bring it back and get the credit. So awesome! The jeans quality is great. Unique cut and fit real nice. I had nothing but positive experience with this store. If a salesperson is too pushy why one doesn't just politely express how they feel and ask for even more space. I can say " I am an independent shopper and would appreciate some space so that I focus and decide without any distraction. I don't feel comfortable when a sales person is near me" honestly I think if one says this, they would give space. Say what you mean. :) read more

Charlie's is the place to go for your (traditional designer) denim in Philli. Their new women's space @ 233 Market is especially enticing. It is much larger then the previous space with a nicer design, look & feel in general. In my opinion it is actually a HUGE improvement on the previous space, for as often as I went into the original Charlie's I could never really shop as I felt it was so very uncomfortable & cluttered in there. The crew here really seems to know their denim & are always ready to help fit you into a new flattering pair. Denim isn't the only thing you'll find here however - to name a couple you'll also find some Custo Barcelona & Ed Hardy. Now, as fellow yelper Kelly S mentioned below - the boutique was advertising a 20% off sale. Great! Well...its 20% off everything BUT the denim. Which of course, is about 80% of the store. Note that this is apparently not set in stone as I was randomly offered (by Sebastian, I assume?) a 20% discount on a denim 7 For All Mankind jumper I had tried on which I was specifically told earlier was definitely NOT on sale. Nothing but excellent customer service at this store. The quality and selection of jeans are unparalleled and they tailor them quickly. The salespeople are a little pushy in up selling you but they're just trying to do their job so it doesn't offend me. I definitely recommend Charlie's! I used to shop at Charlie's Jeans when I was a student at Penn. Ten years later, I don't get to Philly much, but I recently placed a phone order with the store manager. She was very helpful - she was able to provide me with the right size in a brand that no one else in the country carries. She shipped it to me in CT, and I received the jeans two days later. Excellent selection of designer denim and great salespeople. Like many other reviewers, I was helped by Sebastian, who definitely lives up to his reputation. He looked at me, asked me what I was looking for, and found me several pairs of jeans that fit great, including the perfect pair, which I bought. He knew what size I was without even asking. Their clothing selection (aside from jeans) is also pretty good and includes some interesting brands, but denim should be your focus at Charlie's. The prices are average for the designer denim market and no more expensive than they are at other boutiques. read more

I stopped by this store after a nice day of lunch and going with my cousin to try on wedding dresses. The customer service was great, the young woman helped me within minutes trying on the perfect pair and size. Also, the heels in the fitting room were a great touch. I'm a pretty frugal person and didn't realize how pricey these would be. However, I ended up buying two pairs because I could tell these would last me years.
