Never would I have thought I would be writing a bad review regarding Charlottesville Veterinary Hospital, but due to a recent situation I feel it is important that other pet owners are made aware of the incident regarding a needless extensive surgery for our dog. Our "Frenchie" Pablo had a growth on his right side, the rotating Doctor Dr. Christopher Middleton, DVM, diagnosed Pablo with cancer (mast cell tumor) on 10/5/23 at an office visit doing just a "smear" sample of cells from the surface that he scraped off and then looking under microscope. He also stated that we needed to get it removed right away as well as getting an abdominal ultrasound (which we would have had we been able to get an appointment. We were also told to take Pablo to an oncologist, which again, we were unable to get an appointment within the month. With all that in mind and also the insistence that Pablo have the growth removed ASAP to prevent the possible spreading of cancer, we had the surgeon perform the operation. A week later, the pathology results came back stating that Pablo never had any form of cancer. We were also then informed by the full-time Vet/owner that the growth would have just dried up and fallen off had we done nothing. After hearing this, I called the administrator (Jennifer) and expressed my displeasure that my dog just had a completely unnecessary x-ray and extensive procedure. She tried to defend Dr. Middleton instead of apologizing and offering me a partial refund. Jennifer stated that Pablo had a "benign cancerous tumor." I explained to her that is not correct because benign means "non-cancerous", so clearly, she did not understand that it couldn't be benign and cancer at the same time. Over a week passed, and I was still waiting for my refund. We finally received a letter that we needed to find another vet due to our "displeasure of the care provided," and they would give me a good faith partial refund of $350. We asked for the records and found out that Jennifer fabricated notes in the records that stated that I "demanded potential outcomes." We will miss Doctors Carlson and Luziach, but it is not the "displeasure of the care provided"; it is the honesty and the inability of management to admit to a mistake that involved an expensive misdiagnosis.

Big thank you to vet assistant Bridget and Dr. Luzaich! Took our Lancer in to get his shots and wellness examination. Both of them were extremely friendly, transparent, and knowledgeable for all of my questions and concerns. Our dog is very wary around strangers, but the staff here are able to handle him well and be very kind with him. Of note-they offer a curbside pick up for appointments, which we use. Make sure to park in the numbered spots and let them know where you are.

We know she is dying... CVH staff was completely rude and condescending. We were not allow to speak to a vet or a vet or a vet tech!

AVOID THIS VET... They are MONEY hungry... And the front desk staff is very RUDE... I simply asked to speak with a Vet or a Vet Technician about my dying dog to see whether or not I could get an Amoxcillin prescription refill ($20 max for the refill). I was NOT allowed to talk to one... I asked multiple times to please speak to one of the vets or techs at their convenience over the phone. And at every instance I was completely blocked by this front desk person on the phone. She instead spoke to me in a condescending mannerism... without any compassion. In essence the she said that I would need to pay again for an office visit ($80) (for my paralyzed, demented, and non-responsive elderly dog) - to get full evaluation for her eye infection. When they fully understood that she is on her death bed... all we wanted to do was keep her eye from hurting too badly... My husband and I NEVER got to even speak with a vet or tech!

Pretty good place. They let you come in the building with your pet. A lot of places still don't allow that.

I am very pleased to say that we get the same great treatment with this team. Dr. Cain is amazing with both of our dogs, Ruka and Chico. I love how friendly and caring the assistants and technicians are with our dogs. Ashley is very friendly, especially when it comes to our dogs. Staesha is also friendly and caring! Makes us happy when she pops in to say hi to our dog Ruka. He's a Ridgeback, which she shared she grew up with :) Cherish always welcomes our dogs and makes their tails wag! One thing we hate is when we feel rushed with our appointments, and Dr. Cain has never made us feel that way. He always explains things thoroughly and never makes us feel like any questions we ask are not good ones. Our little dog recently had oral surgery with dental extractions and we were very worried. Dr. Cain and his team assured us everything would be alright and kept us updated throughout the process. Our dogs love going to the vet now because of their amazing treatment, but it also could be because of the treats they spoil them with. Their customer service is great and am always able to schedule an appointment with no problem, even same day appointments. I either always speak to Jessie or Shane, they are always able to squeeze us in, especially for their nail trimming appointments! Their kindness and overall expertise is the reason why we always recommend VCA Albemarle to our friends.

I liked the first doctor we saw, which is why I went back the 2nd day when she was still sick. From visit #2 on, things got sketchy. I was charged twice as much to do bloodwork on Day #2 as I was quoted on Day # 1. Dr. #2 advised treatments that dr. #3 said he didn't recommend. Dr. #2 said Ginger wouldn't need to see a doctor when she came the next day for those treatments but Dr. #3 sent a tech out to tell me that since we'd had quality of life discussions with Dr. #2, Ginger should be reevaluated and that earned Dr. #3 a recheck fee. There was zero continuity of care and my guess is that the vets are paid a commission on visit totals. It seemed very obvious that both Dr. # 2 and Dr. #3 were trying to bill as much as possible. There is a very corporate feel. As a pet owner, I'm wanting advice. I don't want to be offered multiple options and not told what possible outcomes there are to any of them. I left with very few concrete details except for the lab values that I had to request a copy of. I used google to find out what exactly they mean because I couldn't trust the doctors at Vetss to tell me anything except what things would cost. I'll never go back. I'd recommend the same for anyone else with a sick pet. You'll spend a lot and get very little information. I'd recommend just asking for pain medicine and waiting for your regular doctor.

She gave them so much love while doing their wellness check and really broke things down for us making all the information very accessible and easy to understand. I appreciate that because we didn't all study to be incredible dog doctors, and sometimes it is hard to understand medical terminology and treatment information. We'll definitely come back; our rescue beagles Lola and Mara loved her!
