Been going to cat care for years. Recently had a bad experience. My cat had a urinary blockage. I call the practice first thing in the morning and was told the Dr. was too busy to see him. To go over to Greenbrier Emergency Veterinarian. No warning about how expense Greenbrier would be. The cat got good care at Greenbrier but was not prepared for how expense it would be. Payment needed to be made in advance before any care was given. Had to run home and get another CC that I don't normally carry with be. The practice is open late Friday - Monday 7:30 AM. Had to pick the cat up Monday morning doing a snow storm still with catheter sticking out his rear. Then take him to properly only vet open doing the snow storm. They keep him while I waited half a day in the lobby. Was told best to keep the catheter in for 48 hours. Cost at Greenbrier $2,900 and another $350 at Meadow Creek. I ask them if I came to them first what the charge would be for the same procedure. Was told $700. At Greenbrier I was also told that my cat may need to go next store to the specially surgical veterinarians for a future procedure . That they were the only ones that did that procedure in our area. Cost would be about $5,000. At Meadow Creek they told me that they could do the same procedure and cost would be about $2,000. They put the cat on a special diet and medicine so hopeful he will not need to have it done. Can not say enough nice thinks about Mesdow Creek and staff. I expect that they will be my new veterinarian. Finale thought my father was a veterinarian and I use to help him out at his practice. I know a few things about the business. read more

Our elderly cat was deaf, suddenly blind, and in great distress. When we sought compassionate end-of-life care, the vet pushed additional tests, suggesting we weren't doing all we could when we asked for euthanasia. Instead of support, we felt judged and pressured, which made an already heartbreaking decision even harder. Families deserve empathy at such moments, not guilt. Will not return and do not recommend. read more

I can't say enough about how wonderful the people at Cat Care Clinic are! Everyone is always friendly when I call, and Stacy (Head Technician) is the absolute best! Whenever I email with one of my (many) questions, she writes back that day and is always knowledgeable, optimistic, and good-humored (despite the fact that my cat has been VERY badly behaved at her visits). She recently had surgery with Dr. Mahanes to remove a lump, and Stacy was with me every step of the way, answering all of my questions before surgery and checking in daily during recovery. It was a very stressful time, and Stacy made everything so much easier. She is truly committed and devoted to her work. As for the surgery, Dr. Mahanes did a wonderful job, and my cat is fine now. Knowing that I have both of these woman to count on during the life of my cat eases my mind and heart. read more

These guys have done a fantastic job taking care of our two cats. We started with annual vet appointments in January, had one of our guys get his teeth cleaned under anethstesia in February, and recently had to bring him back for a suspicious spot on his face. Dr. Egan and her team have taken wonderful care of him. They were communicative through a difficult time, offered sounds advice, timely appointments and genuinely cared for our guys. Thankfully, our incident ended up being nothing to worry about, but we only know that due to their excellent advice and service. We'll keep going here for as long as we're in Charlottesville. My rescues have a difficult time with vets usually so I dread taking them. I recently moved back to Charlottesville and started taking them here, and I cannot believe how incredible they are. I have brought my two brother cats to Cat Care for a decade. I could never ask for a more compassionate and efficient veterinary staff. I took my cats for grooming as well as regular checkups. Stacy is wonderful when grooming and has listened when I described to her the best way to handle each based on their personalities. Last year, one of my cats was diagnosed with cancer. At first, Dr. Mahanes was certain it would be diabetes based on symptoms but she ran tests and they were fine. But I still knew something was wrong so I video taped him and emailed it to her and she responded 'he's definitely in pain, bring him back.' We learned what was wrong through an X-ray. She thought the cancer may be inoperable but sent me to a specialist and he had successful surgery. I won't bore with details, but I did lose him within a year, but that year was so beautiful. I spent every moment I could with him. I adored this cat and I felt I had a whole team backing me up. Cat Care checked in frequently and always wanted to know his status. When he did pass, their staff sent a card with hand written notes from the staff. Note: they can be expensive. But I've never felt pressured to do something I could not afford. I can't recommend Cat Care more for cat moms and dads. read more

Very kind, friendly competent care for cats. Also we have boarded our cat here several times when we travel. They have always been very accommodating. When our older cat was dying, they were very kind to her and gave us all of our options. We euthanized her. We got a nice condolence card in the mail. Then we received a note from the Virginia Tech vet school that a donation had been made in Fluff's memory. So thoughtful and comforting to our kids. I only wish I had found them sooner. read more

Still wonderful. I've been coming to Charlottesville Cat Care with Hobbes for several years now, for both "sick" and "well" visits, and we have always had excellent experiences. They hired another veterinarian a couple years ago, Dr. Egan, and I've found her to be just as capable, gentle, and reassuring a practitioner as Dr. Mahanes. Honestly, I think Hobbes secretly loves coming to the vet because they treat him so well! Everyone I've interacted with in the practice has been warm and welcoming, and they're very responsive to both email and phone requests for appointments. I was new to the area about a year ago and with four cats, knew I wanted a cats only place. It's definitely more serene and catered to felines here which makes visits less stressful. Dr Anderson and Dr Mahane and all their staff are so great with the cats, and very caring. I used to bring my kitty to the Banfield clinic in Charlottesville, which wasn't bad, but I always felt like I was being forced into extra, sometimes unnecessary purchases. Although the Cat Care Clinic isn't cheap by any means, I feel that their prices are reasonable (especially when you aren't conned into buying this and that or paying for unnecessary services). The staff is nice, friendly, and accommodating. They also caught signs of a past respiratory infection that had somewhat altered the shape and condition of my kitty's ear drums...something Banfield failed to discover over the course of several visits. I have no doubt that my cat is well cared for here. Expensive, but highly recommended. read more

Whenever I move somewhere I'm always on the look out for a vet that focuses on cats. I've had very good experiences with them where ever i go! I really enjoy this place, the staff are all very welcoming and helpful and they talk to my kitties like they are their babies! I feel like they love my kitties at least a fraction of how much I love them. I'm a first time cat owner, so I don't have a ton of experience with vets or clinics. But the 2 visits I've had at the Cat Care Clinic have been excellent, and very reasurring. Everyone who works there fawned over my kitties and was very nice. Additionally, everyone I've spoken to (I've called a few times) has always been patient and helpful with my numerous questions. I usually have about a 15 minute wait before we're seen by the vet, but that's not a big deal to me. Prices seem reasonable, and they haven't forced anything that felt unnecessary on me. So far I've only interacted with women who work there--no men, as far as I can tell--and they have all been professional and energetic. It's always a relief to go there and have them interact with my cats. I am definitely a fan, and am sad to be moving soon. Hope I find something as good for my kitties up north! read more

I love this place, they took very good care of my cat(s) and I used them for many years before moving out of the area. The Vets are exceptional, Dr. Andersen truly cares about cats and my cats truly liked her as well. For me they have set the standard in what a vet clinic should be like and I do not understand the reason for any negative reviews, these are people who take care of your cat(s) which for me is a part of my family, if they have egos I didn't notice nor do I care as long as they care for and do everything possible for my cat that's the bottom line. read more

I don't know what is worse, their avarice or their egos here. Having been in the military, we've lived a lot of places and experienced a wide range of veterinary services. Never in my life have I ever seen a Vet clinic that does not have sinks in the room for cleanliness. Their prices are way out of line for the rest of the area. After multiple visits where they had to make multiple tries on all 3 of my cats to get veins, and a pronouncement that if I didn't treat my diabetic cat "she would be dead in a year" (She lived a very happy 3 more years before succumbing to cancer) I finally moved over to another more competent vet practice that, while not an exclusive cat vet, is much more progressive and up to date and a lot less expensive. And, much less egotistical and has much more accessible hours. Do yourself a favor. There are several great vets in this town. This isn't one of them. read more

I agree with the negative reviews this clinic has received. First: their timing is extremely bad. I was made to wait between 30 and 45 minutes every time I visited. Second: The lack of sinks in the waiting room is a HUGE problem if you have cats who mess themselves in the car, as my cat does. The staff never offered to clean the cat up or expressed any concern whatsoever about his discomfort. I've been dealing with the car problem for 14 years and never had a clinic demonstrate such lack of concern. Third: the note about their egos and avarice is spot on. I was lectured to, even as the clinic's behavior put my cat's health and well-being at risk. I was put off by the entire staff my first visit, but went against my gut and kept going back. I wish I hadn't. Finally: During my first visit my cat, a frail 14 year old, was put in a muzzle and physically restrained in a manner that escalated his anxiety, causing him to lash out. His anger was a result of the technician's and doctor's behavior and yet he was labeled problematic from then on. I have NEVER had my cat put in a muzzle by a clinic before, but it's obviously a preferred practice at this clinic: They have several muzzles at hand in every visiting room. These muzzles are cloth and it's unclear whether they're clean. read more

We bring both of our cats here since they were kittens and the staff and vets are great with both of them! They can handle my scared kitty and my high energy kitty. They are very honest about what is needed per cat and what can wait or doesn't have to be done. I never feel like they are trying to "sell" me on more tests or products than my cats need. I love that they take time to listen to your questions and concerns and I never feel rushed. read more

Cat Care Clinic is the best! They have cared for my cats since 1995 with a perfect blend of cutting edge veterinary knowledge, excellent diagnostic skills, and kindness and compassion. They have been incredibly compassionate when dealing with aging and dying pets and they have shared in the joys of new kittens. The cats are much less stressed in a clinic that is devoted to only cats without loud and scary barking dogs. This is the best vet practice I've ever had the pleasure to use. read more

I've taken four of my cats to Cat Care since moving to Charlottesville 9 years ago. In that time, I've had to say goodbye to two kitties. They provided excellent care during the last couple months of the oldest one's life, as he had cancer. And when it came time to let him pass, they were very supportive. My other kitty died unexpectedly at home, but they were no less caring. I'm now there with two younger kitties, one who has urinary tract issues. Again, the treatment has been professional but warm. It feels like family being there, that; everyone truly cares about the wellbeing of my cats and has the knowledge to do so! They have been helpful in navigating thru changing his diet, having two cats eating two different diets, and have been happy to answer all my neurotic questions! Lol! I'm not sure about the review stating a lack of sink in the exam room, but there is a sink in both. The waiting area has couches, and no barking dogs nor other small creatures to distract a cat. They have also been wonderful when I've had an emergency and needed to come in quickly. I wouldn't trust my fur-babies anywhere else! read more

Not crazy about this place. The staff is stiff and without any personality, it's quiet as a mouse and there's something off putting about the veterinarian herself. I get the sense that the animals are just appointment times to them. I could be wrong but I've never gotten a sincere impression. From anyone in this office really. Dr. Mahanes, owner & chief vet at Cat Care, is a brilliant vet, AND she will go to the ends of the earth for her patients and their humans. The facilities are clean, organized, professional, and free of dogs, their prices are more than fair. I love the entire team; their commitment, expertise, and willingness to do whatever necessary gives me the comfort level I need for my (currently) 5 cats. For this veterinary office, it's really all about the cat ~ plus helping the family do their best for the cat. I tried 4 other vets when I first moved to the area 10 years ago, but once at Cat Care, I could not be moved with a tractor. I am lucky indeed to have access to such a valuable resource. read more

This review is for their boarding service only. I've boarded my cat there on a couple of occasions. The good things are that they seem to have treated her well and always gave me a detailed report of how she was doing when I called. I also felt comforted that there were vets on-site should she need care, which she fortunately did not. The bad things, and why I will not be using this service again, are that the cages are pretty small. My cat is by no means large but she had very little room to move around. They also claim that cats really are happier in their cages, and so they do not take the cats out of the cages at all for stimulation etc, except when the cages are being cleaned, in which case the cats are put in their carriers. This, especially because the cages are small, seems draconian to me. Ultimately the reason I will not be using their boarding service again is because of the report I was given when I picked my cat up the last time. Mind you I had called a few times while she was being boarded to check on her and no one mentioned anything about this until I picked her up, which I found extremely odd. When I picked her up, I was told that she had made their watch list (or some sort of list) because she hissed when she was initially put in her cage. Now I had told them to expect something like this because she simply doesn't like other cats, and of course all the cat kennels are in one confined location, so cats are going to see each other. The person who talked to me told me that she soon improved and didn't scratch or bite anyone (which I wouldn't have expected; she's a sweet cat and has never scratched or bit a person, even when she has been stressed). But repeatedly (at least four times), I was told she had been put on this list, and if I brought her back and she bit or scratched someone (which I was told in the same breath that she hadn't done), she would be put in a "condo" kennel, essentially two cages connected by a tunnel, so that they could get in her cage without fear of her harming them. And of course, twice the price. I felt very much like this was a prelude to a set up, and that if I were to take her back, they would find a reason, to put her in this condo deal, whether or not it was warranted (and given all indications, there was no need for me to think it should be, other than the fact that I was given the impression it would happen one way or the other since I was warned about it at least four times in five minutes). So, they lost a customer. I've boarded my cat elsewhere in Charlottesville and have never received such a report, so despite the seemingly good care and medical staff on premises, I will be going somewhere else in the future. read more

Moved here from Alexandria, VA 13 years ago. My husband retired from the military, we have lived many different places and always have had animals. We now have four cats and they range in age from 7 years old to 22 years old. Dr. Mahanes, Stacy, Shawn and the staff are the most caring, responsive, professional group of people and I would not trust my kitties to anyone I didn't trust. Nothing is cheap but an example of what I paid to have my cats claws cut in Alexandria was $7.00, 13 years ago and Cat Care doesn't charge anything.....they just automatically cut them before the exam. read more

I can't say enough good things about Charlottesville Cat Care. I've seen Dr. Spearin, Dr. Andersen and Dr. Mahanes and every one of them is thorough and compassionate (not to mention their veterinary assistants who are also wonderful). When my beloved cat was diagnosed with cancer and eventually had to be euthanized, they treated him (and me) with such care and genuine loving kindness, I'll never forget that. As another poster said, I also received a card with personal notes from everyone in the office, and a letter that a donation had been made to the VA Tech vet school - so thoughtful.Their routine exams are thorough, and they explain things in detail and never make me feel rushed. I'll never take my cats anywhere else - I only wish I could find a comparable vet for my dog! read more
