CHaRM is our go-to place for recycling. It's a first-rate operation and so easy to use. An excellent resource for the community!

This is my go to place for recycling in the city. I come from all the way outside of the perimeter to recycle my hard to recycle items here. Everyone here is very friendly and very helpful. The place is very organized, so it flows really well. You do need to make an appointment on their website and get a QR code for check-in. This just helps keep the flow going. It helps keep the place from overcrowding, which I really appreciate. read more

I make the hour drive to The Center For Hard to Recycle Materials because I care about the environment. They accept materials that may not be acceptable in most curbside recycling. We don't have any type of recycling options where I now live, so I get to make a monthly trip to CHARM. I bring mostly plastics & glass (shoutout to the purple Ripple Glass bins) but I've also brought chemicals like paint, electronics & fabrics that get broken down into fibers. The volunteers are also pretty helpful if you're in person and have questions. You don't have to be a perfectionist, all that matters is that we try! Most of the services are free. One time I had to pay like $2 to recycle several gallons of old motor oil (we change all of our cars oil ourselves) which is a pretty good deal. This is great place to come and recycle items that are for you to recycle. And when your local pickup can't take something, this place does. As a resident, I can recycle most items for FREE (there are exceptions). To recycle here, you do have to sign up for a time slot on their website. And they will ask to scam your registration or look up your name upon arrival. I believe this ensures they have enough people volunteering this day when you drop off. So just don't show up to recycle. Then you go around to different stations to recycle what you need. Styrofoam, cardboard, glass, electronics, fabrics, etc can all be recycled here! What a great place! They receive many hard to recycle items like electronics, styrofoam, and about seven types of plastics. I've been going to their pick up events and Buckhead, but when they stopped doing that, I was happy to drive to Hill Street to drop off my collected recycling once every two months or so. There are many places to drop off plastic bags, 1/2 plastics, cardboard, and glass but this place is a one stop drop. I usually try to drop a few dollars for donation to keep running, but it's not necessary. I think that paint and televisions with vacuum tubes are things you pay to drop off, but you should check their website to make sure what you're bringing in is accepted and what the fees might be if there is one. What a handy place to have in my own neighborhood. I always feel so bad for not recycling items that have been incurring in my house so I finally took the jump and brought them in Charm. They require you to make an appointment prior to arriving. I would say make an appointment at least a week prior to the day you want to drop off your items since they do get very busy. I opted for Saturday at noon drop off and shortly after we arrived, more cars came. The place is well organized and really know their stuff. Their staff is super helpful and friendly. I had clothes, textile, helium tank and paper shredding needed. The tank and paper shredding did cost money to drop off but if all the work goes to something good, then I don't mind paying one bit. read more

I can't believe I have yet to review CHaRM! This is seriously the best place in the city to drop off your recycling. Also you can drop things here that you never imagined recyclable! Plastic straws? Styrofoam? No prob, there's a bin for that. They also accept chemicals which is the most convenient thing. I spend most of my visits dropping off glass, film plastic and styrofoam from packaging, but there is a long list of what they take on their website and any associated fees. Yes some things do cost to drop off, but it's worth it just to know your materials are being recycled! For covid measure, you have to make an appointment, wear a mask and follow a one way traffic flow, but I like this process even better than before. It just flows better. read more

Great place to be eco responsible. I needed to get rid of an old dryer and TV my mom had. I found out about this place from my girlfriend. I took the dryer, TV, and some card board boxes to be recycled. The process was very simple. The layout was divided into sections depending on what you were recycling. They had volunteers to assist with the separation of various products. An employee came to my truck with a folk lift removed the dryer and the TV. My son and I threw away several card board boxes. It was refreshing to see so many people recycling. I was very impressed. I strongly recommend this place and I strongly recommend everyone to start recycling if you're not doing so already!! read more

So grateful to have these guys in our neighborhood and as a free much-needed resource for the city. We've been coming here for a few years since city council member Carla Smith helped get it started. It is an all-volunteer-run non-profit and considering that the city of Atlanta doesn't accept glass, it's extremely helpful having this nearby. Furthermore, there's not many places you can take batteries, lightbulbs, printer ink cartridges, electronics, computers, metal, plastic bags, and so much more to reduce waste around the city. The center is organized and easy to navigate. The labels help you figure out where to put stuff as well as the friendly volunteers on site. I only wish they were open on Sunday's and for longer hours, but given that it's volunteer run I'm thankful they are there at any time. read more

This place is awesome for recycling and disposing of items not recommended to be willy-nilly thrown in the garbage. I'd had a bunch of old clothes and other crap that we'd "discovered" after moving earlier this year, and AT was antsy for me to dispose of them to clear up space. I'm not sure about you, but I keep things I don't need because of fear of adding to landfills. I know they'd end up there eventually if I don't deal with them, but I had analysis paralysis. Anyway, CHaRM changed everything once I became aware of its existence (thanks Nextdoor neighbors--I knew there was just more than gossip and complaints on there! Haha). You must made an appointment. The place is a well oiled machine and you must respects you the process. We got there and there were people who work (or volunteer? I'm not entirely sure) who checked us in and guided us to the right areas based on what we wanted to get rid of. I wish there were more of these places, to make it easier for people to throw things away in a more environmentally conscious way. But since it's not even a half hour's drive from home, I'm just glad to have CHaRM within driving distance. This place is fantastic. Bring (almost) all of your recyclable materials here! Make an appointment online (it's easy and you can even do it same-day) and separate all of your items in advance to make it easy once you're there. The staff are all saints. Wonderful and helpful people, passionate about helping the community and the environment. You can bring batteries and electronics. No alkaline batteries BUT your rechargeable batteries, lithium ion batteries, watch batteries, and other electronics. I think it's free up to 25lbs then they might charge beyond that. Hard to recycle styrofoam is also welcome here. Even recently they started accepting styrofoam peanuts and plastic ware. They have their own orange "Energy" bags they can provide to you, to package these special items in. Very pleasant and helpful staff. High fees for paint returns! I was just over the 100 pound limit and so paid $.50 per pound including the first hundred pounds. Otherwise the first 100lbs is .25 per pound. My bill for recycling and not throwing it in the landfill was $62.00. I don't see this encouraging people to recycle. read more

I looked at the 6 large garbage bags we had loaded in the trunk and was horrified to imagine this needlessly in a landfill or dumped in a water source, such as a lake or river. To be honest, I was prepared to give CHaRM five stars no matter my experience given their mission. But now that I've dropped off some recyclables, I'd say this is the best recycling center I've used. Located five or six blocks southeast of Grant Park on Hill St., CHaRM is a large property fully capable of supporting a recycling drive, if they choose to have one. When you drive in, head left into the open lot area (following the sign) and park near whichever type of recycling you're doing. The bins and dropoffs are clearly labeled - metal, plastics, etc. I was dropping off batteries and CFLs, which are collected in the 'Chemicals' area. That might not be intuitive, but no matter - a CHaRM staff member came out to help me. They're open three days a week - Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. When I arrived just after 10AM on a Thursday, I was the only one dropping stuff off. And I stayed to take a few photos. Still no one else. I hope the people of Atlanta take advantage of this great service, particularly since their mission is to accept hard to recycle materials. Their website explains everything. read more

Each Saturday morning I have rolled up here after moving into my new home with a truckload full of boxes and styrofoam. you'll be met with friendly volunteers who are there to help assist you in sorting. There are lots of different stations and it can be a little overwhelming at first as to where you should take what. They have people standing by to help you break things down if you need it. And it feels like everyone is out there really for the right reasons. I'm so glad something like this exist in Atlanta and is easily available to be able to get out 2 with great hours. my only gripe would be they need to have a dedicated container for various debris that does not fit into their recycling categories. no matter how well you sort things there's always going to be something especially when you are moving in that just does not fit. Having it all purpose rubbish bin would be a great help at this facility. read more

We are so grateful to have a facility such as Charm that can take almost anything that is not accepted by weekly recycling service pickup. Their website is super informative - inc directions, what items they accept, hours, closures (Holidays), etc. When you arrive the volunteers are so helpful - there are signs at each station to let you know what to drop off. You can park your car in the middle and walk around with ease to each different station. Everyone is very friendly. Considering they are open Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, everyone is able to make a trip to Charm. I typically go about once/quarter - I put aside the hard to recycle items as I come across them or replace them (ie batteries and lightbulbs) and then make a trip. Thank you, Charm!! read more

CHaRM is a site that we've visited regularly for the last several years. They do a great job making it easy to drop off one's recycling. During the pandemic, they've asked folks to make an appointment in order to "space out" their visitors. It's worked beautifully. It is so nice to have this in our neighborhood. Yes, I pay a good bit in taxes and recycling to be picked up is part of that. However, I do not feel what we put in our bins actually gets recycled (especially when you see what others put in their bins). When you go to CHaRM, you feel like everything that you bring is actually going to be diverted from the landfill and actually recycled. On top of that, they recycle a wide variety of other materials like paint, electronics, styrofoam, plastic film, cigarette butts, corks, etc. If you haven't been, you need to load up your car with your recyclables and go. read more

CHaRM is a wonderful resource, a place to give new life to materials that are not accepted by your municipal or county curbside recycling program. CHaRM accepts a number of difficult to recycle materials, including paint, electronics, styrofoam. Here are my reservations: People are going out of their way and at their own expense to prevent materials from winding up in a landfill and leeching into the soil and water. CHaRM necessarily has rules, but there's no need to act as scolds when a well-meaning recycler overlooks one and brings materials not accepted or fails to make an appointment. CHaRM, if it's truly committed to saving the environment, should be completely supportive of those trying to do the right thing. Everytime I visit CHaRM, I'm scolded -- "Well, [sniff], it's very clear on our Website." -- the most recent visit, twice. Much of what CHaRM recycles is, in fact, recyclable in most local municipal and county curbside programs. Maybe CHaRM needs to consider focusing its efforts and becoming the Center for Really, Really Hard to Recycle Materials. Finally, why doesn't someone recycle textiles, old clothing not fit for donation, for example? Textiles are probably among the oldest type of recycled materials, just think of Medieval rag pickers. read more

Not gonna lie, I was little intimidated upon arrival. I've never seen so many recycling options. I brought antifreeze, paint, a television, batteries of different types, a whole bunch of boxes and some floor tile. They took all of it. Funny thing is, if I were to take that stuff to the City dump, they would charge me. Truthfully, I'm nowhere near a tree hugger, but as a resident of Atlanta, it's my responsibility to make sure I dispose of things properly. I want to preserve the future home of the kids and neighbors that populate the area. Charm's mission is awesome and I can appreciate it because it's not just rhetoric. They're out there talking the talk and walking the walk. They proactively show us how to help the environment rather than shame us for harming the environment. I spoke with one of the mission members for a while at Dogwood Festival. He mentioned they'd be giving away a free BMW electric car. I've committed myself to volunteer with Charm and suggest you follow suit. read more

If you care about the planet as much as I do, you recycle. Unfortunately, the reality of recycling is is that most of the things you WANT to recycle, you CAN'T in most communities. I'm talking glass, mattresses, (mercury filled light bulbs, Styrofoam, paint, and even electronics. I recycle: glass, CFLs, electronics, styrofoam, plastic bags, plastic, metal, and on and on. Every time I come to this facility I find something else they will recycle. This place, Center for hard to recycle materials lives up to their name. I love love love this place and the dedicated people that volunteer here to truly make a difference. Almost everything is free to recycle with the exception of TVs and CFLs (first few are free). Next time you have trash that will only clog up our landfills, consider taking it to CHaRM instead and putting a smile on Mother Nature's face for a change. Spring cleaning was a snap with CHaRM! The Center for Hard to Recycle Materials (located about a mile from Zoo Atlanta) turned out to be the final resting place for all the random junk lying around the house. They accepted many items that the City of Atlanta wouldn't pick up if I put them out on the curb: Old-school, box TV ($15 charge) Half-empty paint cans (the first five one-gallon cans were free) Old tires (two were free) They also recycle things like CFL bulbs, batteries, plastic grocery store bags, printer cartridges, carpet & padding and mattresses. You can recycle almost all your harmful waste! And the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. And even if the city doesn't recycle glass from the curbside pickup, They DO recycle it here. Although they don't do alkaline batteries. Only lithium and other special ones. It's easy in and out. Definitely try it. If you live in town and your building doesn't have city recycling pick up like mine, this place is great gem of a find! Aside from your every day glass/plastic bags/styrofoam products they take all sorts of hard to recycle items like electronics and chemicals. Hours are convenient, including Saturdays for weekend errand runners. This place is THE BEST! They've helped me recycle so many things that most people don't even realize are recyclable, like styrofoam, all types of plastic, paint containers, etc. They're also a great take to place your glass as a lot of complexes have stopped accepting glass in their recycling. The volunteers are so helpful and kind and we are so lucky to have this place in Atlanta. (As a comparison, other cities I've lived in charge you to dump - not even recycle - a lot of the things they take, like mattresses, porcelain, etc). They also take donations of both good, usable clothes (which goes to support The Kidney Foundation) as well as unusable clothes and other cloth items (tattered or otherwise ruined clothes, backpacks, etc). CHaRM always offers an easy and quick way to recycle all of your household waste. My favorite part is plasticville, where they accept most plastics and even plastic film! Nearly anything you can't recycle in your curbside bin, they happily accept. I live about 30 mins away but I make visits about once per week and always feel better when I know my recyclables are getting used for good and not going to a landfill. read more

I've used their service frequently and overall pleased however: if you want to encourage more recycling I wish they would enhance their service. As it is now you have to make an appointment to drop items off a week ahead of time. This is super inconvenient. I literally had few items that would take me about 2 minutes to drop off.
