This is clearly the place the locals go, we were there about 1230 on Sunday and must have caught the "post-church" crowd. Fresh homemade soup everyday and the breakfasts look good. We opted for lunch, my husband got the BLT and I got a chicken tender salad, we both got the soup of the day - Potato soup that had veggies in it - loved that take on it! My tender salad had obvious food service prepared tenders, BUT they were real chicken and I like that the owners put fruit and nuts in the salad to make it something different. Friendly service, lots of parking. Definitely will go back as we're driving through again. read more

Stopped here for lunch today while traveling thru. It wasn't busy when we got there but then it was very busy. Sunday after church crowd. They serve breakfast all day as well as sandwiches and salads. They are only open till 3:00. I got Eggs with Ham, toast and fruit. Was good my husband got the French Toast with sausage links. We rolled in with our family of 6 kids early on a Sunday morning after several days of camping and felt totally welcome. We were seated quickly and several staff members came over to admire the baby which was really nice. The menu was a nice balance of standard family restaurant and a couple fun unique dishes, with something for everyone and generous portions. My partner absolutely loves the omelets here but I tend to love the burger and sandwiches. I ordered a Reuben, the corned was all chopped up like canned corned beef that you use for corned beef hash when you are in a pinch. Not should NOT be used in a Rueben. Was looking for a lunch place while in Havre and after a little google and research thought I would check out Char Family Dining. Wow. This was one of the best corn beef hashes I have had in a long long time. The hash was cooked just right and o had two over easy eggs and let the yolks run in to make a sauce and the hash browns were cooked just the way I like them. The rye toast was toasted and buttered just right to be able to clean the plate. If it wasn't inappropriate I may have just licked the plate. Highly recommend those family owned and down to earth restaurant. I for one will now be a regular here whenever I am in Havre. read more

Staff when they interacted was friendly enough but the food was just not good. We ordered breakfast items and it was all very bland. The biscuits and sausage gravy was cooked gravy with sausage added later as an after thought, my guess is to use the gravy for multiple dishes, which made it tasteless. Her breakfast is honestly exactly the way my grandma used to cook it and the atmosphere there is cozy and family oriented. She know exactly what I want to drink when I go and is the only decent Indian Taco you can get in town. Best breakfast in Havre. Period. There's not much to dislike about this place. Maybe the photos on the wall are a little meh. And the lighting isn't very good. But the food (especially the breakfast) is exceptional. Biscuits and gravy are very good, as are the omelettes, and bacon is cooked very well. Hash browns are also very good. I have a theory...if a place can't cook breakfast then the rest of their meals will suck. Well, Char's cooks a GREAT BREAKFAST and their dinner entrees are good too. We ate at Char's for lunch and it was delicious. I had my typical patty melt. This is what I order to see if cooks know what they are doing in the kitchen. They really do at Char's. The service was good and with the kidding around with the customers, you know they are locals and know where to get the best in town. I had the corned beef hash with eggs and toast, don't know what brand of coffee they serve but it was good too. I noticed from eating breakfast at road hotels and fast-food joints I feel nauseated after but felt great after breakfast at Char's. Everything is home-made and not out of a giant feed-bag and then heated up. It was the best breakfast I had on a 4000 mile trip from Montana to California back to Saskatchewan. Well up on the Hi Line in Havre is a dying type of Americana-- the family run diner. They had me at Breakfast all day. Good quality fare at a reasonable price. Kid had a two egg omelet with hash browns-- nice price savings on the Lite section. The rest are big portions. Hash with eggs is a winner served with two eggs your way -- no fuss substitution for pancakes over toast. The hot roast beef sandwich had an in house savory cut of thin sliced beef over bread in a brown gravy with mashed potatoes-- old fashioned goodness. Great food and service. Wife and I were driving across Montana after visiting Glacier National Park heading back east. While traveling we try and focus on using local eateries and hotels, when possible. We were not disappointed in Char's Family Dining. The menu has plenty of options and we particularly liked the lite fare options. The portions were perfect for us. The service was phenomenal and the coffee kept coming.
