Our pet fit right in from the start with a little patience and training they all need after being homeless for so long in a shelter. There are so many homeless pets waiting for their "forever home", I hope more people will realize the need for so many of them who are waiting for love and care and a place they can finally call home. Such comfort, love and joy this little guy has given us. If you are looking for your new fur family member, this is a great place to start at the Action for Animals in Latrobe.

Horrible experience -- truly at a loss for words…read more Our application was initially denied because our cat wasn't spayed. Fine. We immediately scheduled the spay for the very next morning. Then suddenly, they claimed our landlord said there was a two-cat maximum. When we called our landlord ourselves, he not only denied this to them but confirmed the lease says no such thing. So why lie? What should've taken one simple call turned into a series of frustrating and unnecessary hoops caused entirely by their disorganization and lack of communication. Their condescending, "we know best" attitude creates more barriers than bridges -- and ultimately prevents animals from finding loving homes. Despite knowing we lived an hour and a half away, they waited until 30 minutes before our cat was done with surgery -- meaning she would've waited over an hour for us to get there-- just to tell us the cat we'd applied for was adopted by someone else. Luckily, we were only 15 minutes away at that point. They insisted they "don't hold applications," yet somehow ours remained active during this whole process. And their excuse? "We couldn't guarantee you'd come back." While our 9-year-old cat was in their surgical suite. None of it makes sense. None of it felt fair. The lack of logic, empathy, or even basic organization was astounding. Save your time, money, and emotional energy. Go with Save Our Strays or literally any other rescue that's actually focused on matching animals with loving families -- not gatekeeping adoption with made-up rules and callous behavior.

However, I recently adopted a cat from White Oak Animal Safe Haven, and if I knew then what I know now, I never would have adopted from here. We took our new cat to the vet after about a week of having her home, and she tested positive for Giardia and Coccidia, two types of parasites. If you don't know anything about this, a quick google search will show you what a process it is to get rid of these parasites in cats. It is really difficult to get rid of and has been an emotional roller coaster. We have spent hundreds of dollars in vet bills and cleaning supplies. We had to treat and quarantine our resident cat. We have a carpeted apartment which makes this so much harder to get rid of. We spent hundreds on carpet cleaning alone. It is also highly contagious, so it is very likely all of their cats and possibly dogs could have this as well. I find it very hard to believe the shelter had no idea their cats have this, and if they didn't, they are not properly vetting their animals (which is funny because they told us they denied someone's application because they said they wouldn't take their cat to the vet). Giardia and coccidia cause the cat to have really bad diarrhea and gas, so if they really did not know their cats were infected with the parasites, they were knowingly not seeking care for their animals. We noticed the smell on the drive home after picking her up, so there's no way they didn't know something was up. They never once mentioned to us that this is something they were dealing with, and they knew we had another cat at home. So they risked my current cats health as well. The adoption process is quite intense and very thorough, which I don't think is a bad thing necessarily; however, to have that type of adoption process and then give me a sick animal is crazy to me. After we got the results, I called the shelter to inform them in case there's some possible way they didn't know, and the woman I spoke to was kind of rude and very dismissive. No apology or anything. I will say, we had a good adoption otherwise. The cat coordinator was very kind when we went to meet the cats and when we picked up the cat we adopted. I just can't believe they gave us a sick cat and never felt the need to mention anything. All of this being said, be aware that if you have recently adopted a cat or plan to, there is almost a 100% chance they will also have Giardia and Coccidia because it sometimes takes multiple rounds of medication and cleaning to fully get rid of this. Our cat has been on one cycle of meds already, and there has yet to be improvement. I don't know how long this has been going on, but if you want to adopt from here, please do some research so you can get it right from the beginning and help the sick cats. It is treatable but it requires a lot of time, money, and consistency.

I was going to another vet in the city and getting charged $95 just for being seen for 10 minutes. The tech fee is half of that here. There's a large parking lot. And they're quick. My dog has come here for her regular vaccines, the vaccine clinics, her annuals, and when she's not feeling well. I've had a few administrative issues with email/contact information so that could use a little work. Otherwise, I love coming here. I can't say the same for my dog, because every time she comes she has to step on a scary scale and/or get poked. But this is to be expected!

This location in the East Side of Pittsburgh has a veterinary center and a shelter and also offers obedience training classes. In the past several years, I have visited this HARP many times. In 2015, I adopted two cats from the shelter (for details, please see my previous review below). These two cats still happily live with my family and me. Most recently, I donated several bags of pet supplies to this shelter. HARP collects new and gently used pet supplies for Ellie's Attic, which then gives the supplies to families who have pets and are financially struggling. I dropped off dog beds, cat beds, dog bowls, disposable diapers, a sweater, a training bell, etcetera. I placed the bags near the entrance inside the building. An employee at the front desk kindly thanked me for my donation and asked if I needed a donation receipt. Next, I asked the employee if I could visit the dogs who are available for adoption. Unfortunately, the dogs could not be visited on that day, but I was allowed to view a binder that contained printed descriptions of the dogs. I did visit the cats, and I felt pleased with the size and cleanliness of their cages.

In mid-December, my husband found an English bulldog named Olive on the Petfinder website. On…read moreFoster Farm's website, I filled out an application to adopt Olive. The application asked questions about our employment, housing, any fences, how we would give the dog exercise and other necessary things, our current pets and their veterinarian records, any experience that we have with this dog breed, if we have ever given up any past pet, etcetera. I spent time to write many thoughtful paragraphs of text. Two days later, the Foster Farm contacted me and said that they wanted me to adopt Olive, pending my answer about an invisible fence (which they do NOT allow). (I read other Yelpers' 1-star reviews about filling out applications and never hearing back. The Foster Farm is run by volunteers who have jobs or are in school, so they are low on time, but they should get back to you.) On that same day, they approved my application for Olive, and they scheduled my husband's and my first meet-and-greet/adoption with Olive for a few days later at our request to fit our schedule. In the meantime, the Foster Farm answered our questions via email about what size of collar and carrier to buy, what type of food to buy, etc., so we could shop in advance. They also emailed me photos of Olive. The adoption fee was $325, which was supposed to include vaccinations (DAPP and rabies), a microchip, deworming, and a future spay. Payment options were PayPal, Venmo, or a check. On December 22, a Foster Farm employee drove out to our house with Olive. She wore a face mask as a COVID-19 precaution. She allowed us to spend time with Olive on our couch, and she spent time to answer our questions before she left. I am deducting one star from my review, because the Foster Farm gave us *NO MEDICAL RECORDS.* I asked for medical records multiple times, particularly for the vaccines, and they said that they did not have them. The Foster Farm had told me that they would pay for a clinic to do Olive's rabies vaccine, which was included in the adoption fee, but the clinic for some reason did not do the rabies vaccine. With ZERO medical records for Olive other than for the spaying, I paid my veterinarian to do ALL vaccinations from scratch. The clinic did scan a microchip and give me the number at my request. In addition, the Foster Farm had told me that they had dewormed Olive, but when I took Olive to my veterinarian for a fecal test, the test came back positive for intestinal parasites, and I paid my vet to deworm Olive. Maybe the Foster Farm had dewormed the dog, but she contracted parasites again from other dogs in different foster homes or when she was adopted by another family? Olive is a very nervous dog who needs to be housetrained, but she has a very sweet personality, and she gets along with our cats (yay!). I think that the Foster Farm placed her into the right home, and their fee of $325 for a bulldog was very reasonable. For those reasons, I will award 4 stars. But I do recommend that the Foster Farm pass along vaccination records.
