3.5 stars. For several years, I have occasionally shopped at this Petland store…read more For all of my visits, an employee has courteously greeted me. Years ago, when I had different cats with different dietary needs and preferences, this Petland had their preferred types of wet foods in stock. However, during my most recent visit, I did not see my current cat's preferred types of foods on the shelves. I did see a decent selection of beds, collars, leashes, jackets, toys, dog foods, aquarium supplies, some cat trees, hygiene products, bowls, and some cat litters. The prices, though, were higher than what online retailers charge. This store had a few dogs and cats up for adoption through their Animal Shelter Adoption Program (ASAP). It also had some birds, fish, a guinea pig, etcetera. Furthermore, their website says that they offer dog grooming.

2/5 -- Great Selection, Poor Care and Customer Experience…read more First off, this pet store does have the most extensive selection of pet products and animals in the East Liberty/Highland Park/Shadyside/Bloomfield area. You'll find more items here than even the PetSmart on Centre Ave. In terms of stock and variety, I'd rate them 5/5 -- impressive range, shelves are full, and there's something for every type of pet owner. That said, the animal care is concerning. I went specifically for fish, and while the selection looked solid at first glance, the conditions told another story. The tanks and enclosures are far too small, and the animals don't appear to be cared for as they should be. Sadly, it reminded me of a chain store setup -- another pet shop driven by sales, not welfare. 1/5 Pricing is on the higher end. Most items are about the same or slightly more than PetSmart. (I found several identical products cheaper on Chewy with free 1-3 day shipping). The rewards program at this location is a small plus -- you can save around 10-15%, which helps a little -- but overall, the costs don't justify shopping in person. 1/5 The staff interaction was what really cemented my experience. I was helped by the owner, Eric Caplan. While knowledgeable, he came across as condescending and unprofessional. During checkout, I witnessed him respond to another customer -- who appeared to have a developmental disability and was accompanied by caregivers -- with the words, "Get out of here, b***." It was shocking, deeply inappropriate, and visibly confusing to the individual he spoke to. Even if it was meant jokingly, it was shocking. He also made unsolicited remarks about my own aquarium setup, calling it a "waste of electricity," and followed up with more unasked-for advice. Not his money, not his tank, not his business. 1/5 Overall: Huge selection High prices Neglected animals Poor professionalism Final Rating: 2/5 If you're looking for a better alternative, I highly recommend Salty Paws Pittsburgh at 4126 Butler St, Pittsburgh, PA 15201. I'm not affiliated with them, but I've done business there -- they're compassionate, clean, and professional. 5/5.

The rabbits and guinea pigs here are kept in terrible condition. I attached photos of the rabbits…read more They're kept in way too small of cages. The one rabbit didn't even really have any food. Rabbits are prone to digestion issues and need to be able to be constantly eating. There weren't any hideaways provided for them, or any toys for enrichment or to chew on and keep their teeth down. I didn't get pictures of the guinea pigs. Their cage was literally just stacked on top of the rabbits'. But they also didn't have any toys and no hideaways. Because of this, they were visibly super stressed out because they were kept front and center of the store and didn't have any place to hide and get away from the stressors. The top of their cage was also just open and I saw little kids reaching their hands in without any employees around to facilitate customers interacting with the animals like that. Honestly terrible for everyone involved because A.) The kids could get bit B.) It stresses out the animals C.) The animals are learning to be afraid of people are going to be difficult to socialize with anyone that takes them home and D.) Any germs on the kids' hands could easily be transmitted to the animals and make them sick. This store should just stick with fish honestly. I'm not as knowledgeable about the other kinds of animals they have as I am about guinea pigs and rabbits, but the owners definitely either don't care about the animals or are just really uneducated about the animals they're selling.
