I felt compelled to write this 5 star review after my recent few experiences at Chase, even though I am not a current customer. I used to keep all my money at Chase, and actually closed my accounts earlier this year to go to Ally because they offer interest on your checking and savings that is much better than Chase's rates. That said, the big pro of Chase of Ally is that there are physical branches you can use. My reasoning for closing was entirely outside of the local branch which had always been friendly and helpful (and they are dog friendly, complete with treats!). I needed to access information from my closed accounts and had to visit the Hawthorne branch twice, and called it once. All three times I had 5-star experiences, which would have been great as a customer, but to receive this same treatment as a former customer was an absolute WOW moment. Their tellers are proactive, competent, and kind. They never made me feel bad for leaving chase and were able to thoroughly help me each time. If I were to ever return to an in-person bank again, I would consider Chase, because of this stellar service. read more

If you are even thinking of doing business with this bank, let alone this branch, then think again. If you like seeing fellow customers cry while they're being mistreated, making appointments and showing up to find out they aren't going to make it again, or being gaslighted by finance bros who don't like the "tone of voice" you use when you tell them that you would like your time respected, then be my guest and do business with this train wreck of an organization. Recently I have had to deal with the Social Security Administration and Medicare, and they have both been delightful. If you think that toxic bureaucracies are the sole affliction of large state and federal organizations, then I offer as exhibit A the splendid counterexample of Chase Bank which is clearly run for the convenience of its bureaucrats at the expense of its customers. They will of course apologize when they abuse you, but they don't mean it, and they clearly don't care about anything but themselves. You are forewarned. I've been a member with Chase since 2009. I had been with B of A for 5 (awful) years, Wells Fargo (ten mostly good, then mismanaged) years prior joining Chase. I have experienced good, to very good experiences with Chase locations. This particular location is STELLAR. Namely two individuals, Branch Manager Jaime, and personal banker- Mitch! Both these gents, have- on more than a few occasions, demonstrated ABOVE and BEYOND professionalism, intelligence, and banking knowledge. To Hell With Chase! I first joined Chase when WaMu got "acquired" and I had no problems. My free checking was the same, they had a ton of ATMs and locations, no problems, right? Then 2 months ago I get this letter that says their free checking now has stipulations that require you to have an average of thousands of dollars in the account, and have a minimum balance, otherwise they charge a monthly fee just for having the account! In addition to the ridiculous fees that others have mentioned, I no longer consider this a viable option. I still have my credit union account and consider that the most socially-responsible banking option. read more

I guess I got lucky. I just moved here a few weeks ago and with my welcome to the city mail, I got an offer from Chase. Open a checking account, get $125.00. Can one pass up free money? Nope. I dealt with a good guy, even though the branch was having computer issues that day. Long lines for the teller, but he had me in and out fairly quickly and now I have a new checking and savings account here in Portland. Most all of the review on here are fairly out of date. As for the overdraft, they only charge $10 vs $35 if you don't have it. read more

A billion dollar company and you can't afford to pay for enough employees to answer the phone or for a voicemail?

Just opened an account and had the best bank experience I've ever had. I've been with three banks prior to chase but they really took the cake. My banker Michael was outrageously kind and made the process so quick and easy. My first time leaving a bank with a smile on my face and pep in my step! Michael explained everything I needed to know helped me with the issues I was having and made me feel like a valued customer. Thank you chase bank and Michael L. This is not the place to be on Friday afternoon during lunch time in the first of the month. The bee line was really long and all types of Portland peeps are there. From hippies, Abercrombie dudes, Chinese grandmas, Russian peeps, Moms with crying kiddos, Chicks who could be possibly be are strippers (based on the strippers shoes), Freaks and Geeks (Not the tv show) are all in this WAMU. Two stars because they are open on Saturday. Besides that, maybe best to come after 5 or right before they are open... We all learn from our mistakes...so that's what I'll do next time... read more

A bank with a ridiculous and rigid policies that don't allow you to pay a spouse's credit card bill with cash. The bill was only $9.83 but they would only accept a check, not cash, even through I have two Chase credit cards. They said it was a policy against money laundering. If a bank has such absurd policies and it's employees can't even make exceptions for $9.83 they don't deserve any ones business. read more

I was a WaMu customer and while I was promised things would stay the same with the switch over to CHASE, it didn't quite happen that way. Slowly I started seeing changes happening to the regular "rules" of banking and now we are at the point where nothing about the WaMu rules still stand for us veterans. This branch has actually been pretty good to me. If you are going to go with Chase, make sure to decline the over draft "protection". All it does is over draw your account and then charges you an extra $35 each time you overdraft. They make it sound like it will help you because you won't be declined but the fact of the matter is that your purchases will go through and you will be charged an additional $35 per charge, even if you go over by a few cents! To specifically address this branch, the employees have always been helpful to me, friendly and I have never had to wait for very long in any lines. read more

Oddly enough the male employees who work here have been helpful. But the one female teller who has helped me was really....cold (white woman with brown hair and thick thighs). Not sure why. She just looked at me like she was annoyed to be there. She had to be told by a coworker that there was someone (be) in line waiting to be helped. There was only one other teller there I guess and they were already helping someone else. I don't know what it is but she seemed as if she was already annoyed before she even saw me. Maybe her day was off to a bad start? But it was just weird how angry she seemed. Yikes! Hope their day got better! It was seriously angry barista behavior....but without the good coffee and them knowing how much money I have in my account! read more

This piece of crap bank will charge you interest on a balance that has already been paid off and than try to tell you that that is the interest from the previous month. Don't use this bank if you don't have too. read more

For well over five years, this particular branch of Chase Bank has helped me with some very difficult situations involving automatic payments, incorrect charges and overall banking woes. They are always professional. The lobby is not crowded and when you call, you actually talk to a banker. I am not a fan of big banks overall, but this particular Chase branch on Hawthorne has always provided exceptional service. Thank you to the people who truly seem to care about my needs. read more

Chase bank teller machine stole my daughter's money and now they won't give it back! Do not put cash in their machines!!!! As of today, 5/31/16 she is getting her money back. Only because she filed with BBB and she had made these type of deposits before and a long time customer. Still I would not put cash in those machines. read more

I love this bank! They give incredible customer service. I recently made a math error and incurred some overdraft fees, and they happily refunded them even though it was my mistake. They also explained things like online bill pay that will help me avoid the same problem in the future. I've never been so happy with a bank! read more

Excellent service! The way banking should be. I came in to deposit a check to cover moving costs, realized that my checks were in storage out of state and the teller offered to print me checks on the spot. In and out in 5 minutes. Amazing!!! read more

I was a long term Wamu customer forced into Chase. Other than having so many additional branches, they absolutely stink. Their fees are outrageous. They have a perennially sick, sniffing, coughing employee at their Burnside branch who always HAS to shake our hands.They can't manage the simplest of transactions without throwing a host of options, incentives, complicated rules at you. I am happy they will start charging a checking account fee in February, because it gave us the incentive to finally close all 4 of our accounts. We've moved to Unitus credit union. We're happy. My last step is to close my Chase credit card,,, which I like because of the points, but I just have to put my money where my mouth is. It was a NIGHTMARE to close the accounts. Real statement by them: "You can't close your account because you would be withdrawing your balance and that is considered a transaction. An account can't be closed if there is a transaction." Another account took me 4 tries - 2 phone calls, there was a pending 10.00 debit that took forever to clear, they suggested I could close it by e-mail, after it cleared. When I tried that they sent me an e-mail back, oh, no, you can't close an account through e-mail. Then, just this morning, I called again and had to go through 3 account specialists before they finally did what I asked them to; they asked me weird garbled security questions that between my cell phone connection and their fast Hispanic-accented English game out like nonsense. I was screaming and cursing on the phone, I haven't broken down like that in years. This is for an account with .39 cents in it! (my son's) I swear their business plan is to create so many barriers you'll give up trying to close an account, they then can charge the fee, with any luck it will cause you to overdraft, so you get hit with more fees, and you can't close it because of the negative balance due to their fees. I will say they always stay calm and collected, they probably give their employees Prozac injections every hour to be able to enforce their corporate policies and fees. I've NEVER used Yelp until this. I just had to let out my steam in some fashion. GO TO A CREDIT UNION !! There is a large ATM network, I can deposit and go to other credit union branches even. Their fees are less and they have a great interest rate on car loans right now too. read more

I started to refinance my mortgage here and they made a complete mess of it from beginning to end. The documents were sent out with incorrect figures, the mortgage rep was unavailable for over a week at a time, the passwords to access their website with all of the mortgage info were not set correctly, etc. I was surprised how unprofessional they were. read more
