For the last 14 years, we have utilized the services of Teraoka & Company to do our yearly taxes…read more This year was actually the first year that we opted to do our own taxes and purchased the H&R Block online software at WalMart, but for the 14 years leading up to 2015, we were very happy customers of Teraoka and Company. The business is the true definition of a small, family owned, business. The owner, Tom Teraoka, has been a CPA for many, many years, and understands every aspect of tax reporting. For many of the years that he did our taxes, we also owned a business and lived out of state from where he worked. Despite these two complications, he always prepared our taxes professionally and accurately and we were never audited in the 14 years that he prepared them. Usually, though, we would end up owing money at the end of the year, so he would also deliver the bad news of how much we owed and when. He would also file the extensions where necessary to make it as smooth and easy as possible for us. His daughter, Jenny, also works at Teraoka and Company and she handles most of the communication with clients and the billing. A typical bill for services is around $275 and it includes a professionally bound and printed copy of your prepared return. My only criticism came about in the past couple of years when it seemed like the amount we owed in taxes just seemed unnecessarily high. Perhaps a bit more time could have been spent evaluating possible deduction opportunities or perhaps some advice could have been given to avoid the high bills. This year, after preparing the taxes myself using the H&R software, we still had to pay, but significantly less than previous years, possibly due to the way that the software suggests various deductions. Overall, Teraoka and Company is a truly family owned, professional, and friendly company that I am happy to recommend to all that need and want a personal CPA for their tax preparation.
