BOTH MY WIFE AND I HAD A LOT OF TROUBLE WITH HEATHER--AVOID THIS ERROR-PRONE AND RUDE TAX PREPARER AT ALL COSTS! We used Heather for 3 years during which she continually made hasty mistakes and regularly treated us with disrespect. This year she made several errors requiring several rounds of correction. And when I inquired about the nature of the increase in her bill this year relative to previous years, she exclaimed "don't ask any more or I'll raise it more." Well, that didn't set well with me so I finally decided to confront her on her rudeness, at which point her assistant, who Heather admitted was her "lovely cousin" (I believe this was Tracey Halter-Balin), came in and tried to kick me out of the office. So, well, it looks like the nepotism isn't working for them, because this bad review is caused by the both of these totally unprofessional people. I told Heather that she would have one more chance with us by dealing with my wife, who later that week reviewed the returns Heather had prepared, and had found that she had omitted an entire section of our income. Heather is consistently in a hurry when she works, which is why she misses a lot of things. It was always very stressful to sit down with her and watch her get confused, ask a bunch of questions, and get confused about things. I was always very polite, friendly and careful to answer her questions, whereas she would always reply with a very rude tone. For example, she would always laugh at me when I would make reference to an "interest free loan to the government" stating that interest rates are so low why should that matter? Of course, she was missing the point, as she often did, and then treated you with disrespect on top of it all. Never again. THE ONLY reason she is getting two stars is because she answered a lot of my emails last year, but even with that she would make errors as can be determined by doing your own internet searches on your questions. In retrospect, I wish I had just answered my own questions via Internet searches to start with. In all likelihood, you are probably better off doing your own taxes than you are using Heather as an accountant. read more

This last year I began earning the majority of my income through self-employment. I moved to the Long Beach area just after last tax season, and had heard from a bunch of people at work to take a crack at turbo tax because they had a really comprehensive algorithm. I work in tech, figured I'd check it out. So this year probably a month ago I did them using turbo tax and got all the way to the end just to see what it would say( never filed with them ) and it was 2453 - I just got home and checked again to confirm the number. Honestly though- that's about around exactly what I expected, so no problem right? But I wasn't 100% sure how accurate all their algorithms are ( especially since I work in tech... and have algorithms.. haha ) and figured I'd go to a real person ONE LAST time and cross-reference the amount - make sure I got the best deal and prove that computers finally won, you know? I googled "best honest taxes long beach " for I am smart yet simple man. I clicked the link titled "best taxes long beach" and Heather R Chambers was the #1 on the chart, maximum stars, and reviews boasting honesty and friendliness. What a coincidence... I called Melody but was disappointed to hear she was extraordinarily busy this season and might not have time to take on new clients. I explained my situation and that I had my paperwork in a folder and ready to go and lived 5 minutes away. She said if I headed over right away she'd love to help me out. ON A SATURDAY. How nice. So I show up 25 minutes later after lying about how close I lived and how long I needed to throw on some clothes, forget 2 key pieces of student loan related paper on my interest paid this year like a jerk (after promising I was 100% prepared), yet she was a gem the whole time. Melody treated me with such respect despite my young arrogance, let me use a computer to print out the 2 missing pieces of paperwork off the loan websites ( it took a long time, I KNOW it had to be inconvenient ), and was just the nicest person to work with ever, no exaggeration. We get to the end and she tells me it'll cost me 2268 for everything, including her fee. Hot damn - to top it all off she saved me 185 bucks on the dot. If I hadn't wasted that 5-10 minutes I'd say it would have taken about 10-15 minutes for me to be in and out on my way. Needless to say... I am small business owner and hired Heather to do my book keeping and prepare my taxes. I never had to pay year end taxes in my life until I moved over to Heather Chambers. When I asked questions as to how I needed to make changes to my spending and reporting to avoid future problems, I was met with cynicism and attitude by the staff. No help was ever offered in regards to how I might better manage my taxable income, K1 income, and draws and so now after 2 years with this firm, I owe $68k in back taxes. Looking back, I can't ever remember walking out of that office feeling good about anything. I highly recommend looking else where for a CPA. Services rendered: 2015 tax return preparation. Pros: 1) The staff whom I encountered there were all very friendly with me and with each other. I can tell that these are people who have worked here for awhile; this is important since it says a lot about how they feel about being part of that company. 2) As Melody prepared my return, she gave me tips on things that she noticed along the way. The best tip she provided was a simple one-page sheet of approximate values of used clothing; I will use this to determine the value of clothing that I donate to Goodwill for future tax returns. No other CPA ever made such an effort for me before! 3) My return was straightforward so Melody was done in about 20-30 minutes. She's fast and efficient with her work. 4) The $200 preparation fee was absolutely reasonable. 5) I gladly took a free Peppermint Patty on my way out the door. 6) I took the morning off from work and parked my car right out front. I imagine parking is not really an issue here since there's ample parking around the corner. 7) There were no problems with my tax return; I got my state refund in 7 calendar days. Cons: 1) It would be more convenient if they were open on Saturdays; I took time off from work for the appointment, but this was not a deal-breaker. 2) Melody works in the open area of the office. I was a bit uncomfortable having her ask me questions that others could hear, but I got over it. I have nothing bad to hide! However, Melody and every CPA there should have some semblance of privacy for their clients. Summary: After being so badly burned by H&R Block, I am so relieved and happy to have found Heather R. Chambers, CPA, Inc. on Yelp.
