We found Newburyport to be a cute little fishing village, which is not too far from the Mass/New Hamsphire border and is well worth a day trip. Very nice. We took in quite a few historic sights, did a bit of wandering around shops, visited a couple of local restaurants and very much enjoyed ourselves. Parking is in paid municipal lots around the outer edges of the downtown area. The streets are too narrow (historic) to allow parking on street. We did hear a couple of tradesmen working on a restoration project talking about parking. One of them had not paid for parking and his companion said the ticket for not paying was 'only $35' which was about what he'd pay for a day of parking anyhow so he should 'just let it ride'. So yeah, parking. Even our waitress had to pay to park. Ouch. That's a big chunk out of your daily wages. One of the comments we often hear is Portsmouth is a city that feels like a small town. I agree. Everyone we encountered was very community focused. They all seem to know each other and are happy to make suggestions of places to try or hacks to know navigating the city.
