LI Pulse Island 8th Annual Tasting Charity Event: H2O
    Mike S.

On November 17, 2016 I attended the LI Pulse 8th Annual Island Tasting charity event to raise money for Island Harvest that combats hunger on Long Island. There are two levels of tickets VIP and General Admission. VIP gave you 1 hour earlier access and a special VIP room at the event. Due to work I went with the GA ticket since I was not able to arrive early. The event was well worth the $40 admission ($60 for the VIP access) The main downside to the event was having valet parking which backed up cars. I waited a half hour to park. Perhaps a better way to handle this have attendants direct people to parking spots and have golf carts to bring attendees to the entrance? I don't know, but it was not a good start. Thankfully everything else was excellent... So many great vendors donating their food and time to this event. I really enjoyed the Frisky Oysters with samples of Oyster Rockerfeller. Limani offered some excellent Octopus. Spiros is always one of the best tables at any LI event - so generous with stacks of delicious baby lamb chops and a tray of salmon. Brewology was handing out little beaker cups for their beer which was a whimsical little touch added to their samples. Their was one of two of the largest paellas I ever seen, but don't recall the restaurant at the moment (My friend, tablemate and fellow Elite Lisa told me this was Sangra71 in Williston Park. It was fantastically thing of beauty!). Coindre Hall has probably seen better days. I attended with Steph M. and she recalled the windows used to have the original leaded glass up until recently where it looks like they were replaced with plexiglass. Some of the original charm is evident, but some of the decor looks like it was updated in the 80s or 90s and looks very dated and anachronistic. Overall though a very beautiful Gold Coast mansion which made a perfect host for this event! Many of the attendees were dressed to impress and there were many attendees, especially during the first hour then it slowly emptied from being on the verge of overcrowding. I even saw some of our very own Elites from the community (Renee B, the infamous Lisa and Lee), which made me proud! A very popular event for sure and for an excellent cause!

Wiki says this medieval French château has 40 rooms (80k sq ft/7,400 sq m), was built for pharmaceutical magnate George McKesson Brown in 1912; he lost it to the stock market crushed in 1929. It's on the Huntington Harbor. It's named after Father André Coindre. Now used for events and weddings. Pro: the many rooms, give the cater the opportunity to place drinks and finger food in a few rooms on the second floor - thoughtful and intimate. However, the con is, main hall on the ground floor is small and adjacent to the dancing room, which is inconvenient. The food is above average for such event. Catering is by Lessing - they do a lot of business in New York, such as golf courses etc. All the event I attended, would have more than enough food. This one is no exception. I wish both sides would consider the wastefulness of the food and do something about it - like, putting out less food? The wedding ceremony is at 6pm, followed by reception then full sit down dinner. Maybe they could serve less food during the reception? Drinks and finger food are enough. No need to have chefs cooking up pasta, roasted pig ... Less is more?

Very nice venue with very detailed interior design. Everything is so clean and well kept. I'd have to say that the outside makes it look like a princess' magic castle but the inside is beautiful. High ceilings and they set up tables and the stations so that you have an idea of what it'll look like on the actual day. You get an incredible view of Huntington Harbor while you are seated in the dining room. I really like how you have the entire upstairs to yourself with a glass room where you can watch the guests arriving. The back of the castle is a bit strange though because it's a public dog park so you'll see a bunch of people with their dogs. There's no way to prevent them from being there on your big day but we were told that they're very accommodating when you're trying to take pictures. Just hope you don't step on any dog poo. Just kidding! Overall it's a beautiful place. I didn't like the photos that the photographers took. When you look at the photo albums of previous events held there, you'll notice that the images come up kind of washed out and dim. So I'd suggest hiring a different photographer than the ones they suggest. Go check it out for yourself!

Coindre Hall is absolutely beautiful. It is the perfect place to have a picnic, play some Kan Jam, washers, have a catch, sit on the docks by the water, take pictures, play with your dog, meet other friendly people and their dog, roll down the big grassy hill, sit on a bench and be a spectator, swim, kayak or watch the sunset. My dog is 10 and we have never thought to bring him here. Recently my family and I were having professional photos taken and we wanted to choose a space that allowed us to bring our dog. Caumsett was not pet friendly, so somebody there suggested we try Coindre Hall. There is a big parking lot, plenty of space. The building is old and rustic, which contributes so many opportunities for a great photo. Brick walls, beautiful flower beds, ivy along the walls and great big trees. There is a small little barn house at the bottom of the big hill which, for whatever reason, people thought it was smart to completely vandalize it with graffiti. The water view is fantastic, there are docks to sit on and a little beach area to get into the water. Don't come here if you don't appreciate dogs coming up and loving on you because they're everywhere and not leashed. Make sure if you do bring your dog, you bring a glove and a bag for their bathroom needs. It isn't fun stepping into another dog's business when you're in flip flops, or kneeling into it with your jeans when you're posing for a family photo. My only real issue with Coindre Hall that I found distasteful was the amount of smoking that was going on, and I don't mean cigarettes or cigars. It wasn't enjoyable walking past streams, stopping to take photos and having the stench of marijuana coming out from people hiding in the bushes or behind trees. We were surprised when we saw people who worked there come out of the building wreaking of the same substance as well. Unprofessional and like I said earlier, a bit distasteful. Kind of kills the whole family day vibe.

Very cool 80,000 square foot mansion (wow), built in 1912 (w/ indoor swimming pool and walk-in refrigerator) that you can now rent for weddings and events. The grounds are beautiful too, w/ big grassy dog park, that extends all the way down the hill to the bay. The mansion used to sit on 135 acres, but portions were sold off, and it is now 34 acres.

Had my Daughter wedding there this Saturday. I was beyond pleased with the food, how well John and George took care of the whole evening. If you are looking for a small classy, intimate, wedding, this is the best place for it.

I am so, so happy we found Coindre Hall when we started planning our wedding. From the moment we drove up the driveway and first saw the Chateau, we knew we wanted to have our wedding here. Getting married at Coindre Hall was like a fairytale. The grounds are absolutely breathtaking and we LOVED how the venue took place in different rooms - and how our guests had access to the whole mansion (inside and outside) throughout the night. We did not want to have our wedding in a typical one-room catering hall like most of the Long Island weddings. Our wedding was the best day of our lives, and we can't imagine having it anywhere else other than Coindre Hall. John, the Catering Director and Maitre' D was amazing throughout the entire process. Kind, professional, flexible, and reliable... he was always there to answer all of our questions and accommodate to all of our request. On the wedding day, I completely trusted him to oversee everything and he did an amazing job. To John and Lessings, thank you SO much for making our wedding a dream come true!

Great for a lazy day. Yes, no one follows the rule about all dogs on a leash, but why the heck do you want to bring you dog to a park when he's on a leash?!? Just walk your dog then! After reading some of the nutso reviews about people being mad that dogs run around sans leash I was shaking my head. Of course do not be mad if my dog snaps if he is on a leash and your dog is running around free and comes too close.

    GSB always a winner!

100th REVIEW CONDRIE HALL TRIP BACK IN TIME Beautiful DOG PARK, WEDDING Venue Named For André Condrie But IT'S NOT the ORIGINAL name ! This CASTLE ORIGINALLY was WEST NECK FARMS . Built by architect George Luce as a SUMMER Home for George McKesson Brown & wife Pearl as respite from New York City. Huntington's NEWEST Castle a SPRAWLING ,135 acre multiple structure. self-sufficient Town Farm /summer home & French Castle built by George McKesson Brown of The McKesson PHARMACEUTICAL / chemical Empire. West Neck Farms ,was a self-sufficient facility which included a functional Farm with PRIZED chickens,Boathouse,.Ice House, Stables, Garage , SERVANT'S quarters, water tower, electrical house, Superintendents Cottage And , THE GRAND MAIN HOUSE.. The west side property Has 4 Rows of lined trees. To to create Lanes that horse-drawn carriages would Gallop up and down the hill. one LANE went up with the huge blocks of ice and the other LANE. BACK Down for another block of ice . AT the bottom of the hill was the ICE House. where the blocks of ice were stored the ice was drawn from the manmade pond at the base of the giant lawn next to the boat house. When the ice was exhausted, blocks of ice from GLACIERS were brought in through Huntington Harbor to the private dock at The Boathouse. The Old caretaker would tell me stories how the HORSES would Gallop up and down the HILL, at a FURIOUS Pace, In the Heat of the summer with fresh blocks of ice. ICE would slide down chutes on the side of the house into the basement where there was a storage Ice House and HUGE FANS on GIANT pulleys. SAW them myself in my youth. DESIGNED to WOW ,IMPRESS The High Society of Great Gatsby Legends and luminaries of 1920s, 1930s, Greta Garbo, Charlie Chaplin, made a film here. ALL THE FAMOUS FOLKS, politicians Business people and High Society of The Day. Who wouldn't want to chill in a air conditioned Castle? The OLD CARETAKER told me, HOW the HORSES, their ornate carriages would unload the GUESTS at the Front Portico, The horses would be taken to the Stables now Unitarian Church Upon the Advent of cars They would overheat the wait was so long MANY GUESTS would Come to be entertained The Cars would backup for miles. George Brown Lost his fortunes in the market crash of 1929. As Maintenance costs of West Neck Farm were HUGE, he was forced to sell to the Christian Brotherhood, move in the Supers HOUSE. The Christian Brotherhood renamed the Castle After Departed founder André COINDRE. This Christian School operated 20 years or so until closing. Then The EAGLE school.. opened .. and operated for some years .but unfortunately became insolvent closed THE castle fell into neglect until the 70s in which, a caretaker & security were hired. I WAS the SECURITY. Here.! The old Caretaker kept the ESTATE meticulously groomed ,none of the overgrowth around the pond seen today. THE forest of trees in the lower lawn 40 years ago was Just grassland. REAR of Building between the two sections there...Used to be a catwalk that stretched between the two sections. I would stand there and watch the Sun go down.. Back in the day We were concerned that the building would be sold off and demolished ... all the other buildings except the main house have been sold off. THE garage & Stables ,Unitarian Church COINDRE Hall ..32 Acres Still survives I'm SO HAPPY. to see COINDRE Hall is NOW a Beautiful Park. Here's the Scoop: The Long Island Tasting event was crowded but great. Plenty of delicious bites from local restaurants. Saw many fellow Yelpers here enjoying the food as well. Saw Mike S. there and forgot to take a pic. Aaah! The atmosphere was pleasant but very crowded. Jazz playing in the background as you pilfered through the rooms looking to see what is next to delight your palate. Many wines, liquors, and specialty drinks are being served as well. There's a VIP section for those who bought $65 tickets. An armband is placed on your wrist as you enter. This allows you to sample from each restaurant serving. The menu included: seared salmon, fried octopus, sea scallops, paella, clams, risotto with pork belly, pork tacos, eggplant sautéed, deviled eggs, braised beef over sweet potato soufflé, baby lamb chops, tomato squash salad to name a few. So many aromas as you walked about. The event started at 5:30 and ended at 9. The bathrooms downstairs were one stall but upstairs the bathrooms had multiple stalls. Parking was valet only and the guys were careful, manner able and friendly. Multiple seating arrangements were available throughout the hall also outdoor seating. The second floor had seating and standing rooms. I'm so glad I could attend because it was for a great cause. This hall reminded me of an old castle. Large spacious rooms, lots of nooks an crannies. Check this affair out next year Yelpers if you missed it this time.

this place is so dreamy!! I LOVE IT! I went to a yelp event here. this place looks like a castle. winding staircases, beautiful chandeliers, huge windows, multiple balconies, fireplaces, gorgeous mantels am this place is perfect! Its on a super large property and am sure its acres and acres of land. they had valet parking for this event to so we drove right up to the front, looked like something out of a story book, two cylinder castle towers on each side. I was reading about it online and its described as "renaissance, french chateauesque" and i would totally agree. It was built in the early 1900s and it def takes you back to a classy elegant time. Service was great. staff was friendly and prompt in cleaning up miscellaneous plates and cups (as it was a tasting event). Valet was super polite and friendly. other than that everyone else was Yelp staff (which are quite fabulous themselves). We were using the space on the first floor which consisted of about 6 or more rooms, some where large rooms where several tables were for the tasting, and some were smaller rooms which had one thing in them, like photo taking or messages. They had single restrooms which caused a bit of a wait, but had larger restrooms upstairs with multiple stalls, both were super clean (i always mention the restroom because that's important to me....lol) I cant wait to go back and visit The Chateau at Coindre Hall!!

Took my dog to the park there for the first time. She loves the wide open spaces. All the other per owners were very conscientious and protective of my dog because she is a puppy. She went swimming for the first time in Long Island Sound with a beautiful Newfoundland. They even had a hose to wash all the salt, sand and dirt.

Still as beautiful as it was back in the 70's at Summer Camp.

Summer hours begin Saturday, June 27: Tuesday through Sunday, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm with last admission 4:30 pm. When I arrived on Sunday around 11:00 am, there were already a good amount of cars in the parking lot but there is still plenty of spots. We walked over to Planetarium/Admissions and showed our digital pass. The staff were very friendly and gave us a map to show us what we have access to with general admission yellow wristbands. General Admission includes access to the Vanderbilt Mansion (including the Habitat and Stoll Wing animal dioramas, and natural-history and cultural-artifact galleries in the Memorial Wing), The Hall of Fishes marine museum, Planetarium exhibits, and the grounds and gardens. It was really cool to walk around and check out the mansion. The main entrance is a cobble-stone driveway and a bell-tower looms above. This leads you to the central courtyard and I felt transported to a different country. With its ironwork, red tile roof and central courtyard, the mansion's Spanish architectural style stands out. Mr. William Vanderbilt spent over thirty years on scientific expeditions aboard his 250-foot yacht, the Alva, bringing back over 17,000 varieties of marine specimens. The marine and natural history museum is filled with the figurines of underwater creatures. We also met and spoke with the staff inside the mansion. They were very informative and friendly. The Vanderbilt Museum is definitely worth visiting.

I thought everyone lived in these mansions with manicured gardens. Now add rock music and a laser show? Yes, sharks with freakin' laser beams shows! I remember coming here on a date with my girlfriend (now wife) in the 90s and seeing a Pink Floyd laser show. I was a little perturbed because they only played New Pink Floyd. Brah, I wanna rock out to MONEY! My wife, bless her heart, bought us two tickets to see the Van Halen laser show. All these years later, we're back. And trust me, I'm still impressed with the beauty of the property. We walk down the hill to the actual planetarium. There's a couple of stoners on line, if they keep quiet during the performance then no one is gonna have problems. The theater is shaped like a circle, there's no bad seats. The doors close and for an hour, I had Van Halen music crankin'! The actual show, the lasers seem a little dated. I went to The Sphere in Vegas a few months ago, this is old technology. But, it's on Long Island and people still enjoyed the shows. 3.5 Yelp stars
