Very nice location to stay, the Hotel lobby is very comfortable, nice warm fireplace at night. Beer and Wine available in the afternoon in the lobby, played cards at a window table. We enjoyed our room, it was a good sized room, floor a little squeeky but what do you expect from an old Hotel. Dinner was oustanding, the seafood pasta was flavorful and a very large portion. My wife's salad was excellent. Pricing was a little high but the wine pours very generous. It was nice and quiet as only 2 other tables were occupied. Had a nice evening stroll after dinner and because you are so remote, was amazing to see so many stars in the sky. Will definitely stay here again! read more

I have not personally stayed on site. My experience with venturing over before/after the Caves tour is what I will go off of. The gift shop employees are always helpful and are often locals of the town at the bottom of the mountain and will offer up other interesting spots in the area to go to as well as a restaurant to visit before you head out of town. The small diner has a delicious very fresh blueberry bagels and English muffins. Often times I have had them not taste so fresh when visiting a place that is not in town. The fine dinning experience in the evening is gorgeous! it over looks the trees. and being able to take a glass of wine with you up to the main lobby to sit by the massive stone double sided fireplace and take in the scenery is a very simple and relaxing experience. Because the road to the Caves and Chateau is so mountainous- it does not get plowed in the winter so aim for late spring- mid/late fall to visit. Always check their website. The staff will also entertain you with ghost stories of Elizabeth- nothing too gruesomely haunting. read more

We stayed here on a visit to the Oregon Caves, and it wasn't bad. Unfortunately, we were driving in after work on a Friday, so we didn't show up to the hotel until around 9 PM. By the time we were actually in the room, we were ready to pass out, and we didn't get to spend much time hanging out in the lobby. When we checked in, we were given an actual key (not a swipe card). Our room was spacious (Standard 2x Double), and everything was very clean - the most important part of a hotel room! The floors of the hotel were a little crooked, and you could tell the whole building had settled as the bathroom door wasn't squared up as well. The mattress could definitely use replacing, but it wasn't too terrible. After we went to bed, it seemed like the people above us decided to go to their room at the same time, which prompted the "this place sure is Historic..." comments between me and my significant other due to the extremely loud footstep noises from normal walking. So, lack of noise insulation was a bit of a bummer, just be aware. The hotel did give me a tiny bottle of sparkling cider + cookies along with a birthday card due to the fact that I told them I was celebrating a birthday when making my online reservation. That was a nice touch. No fans in the bathroom - we realized why the window had been left open when we first came in the room after we showered and the entire bathroom got super steamy. The big bonus for staying at the chateau is the fact that it is within walking distance of the cave tours, and both buildings are 20 miles (30-40 minute drive via an extremely twisty road) out of Cave Junction. Staying at the hotel allowed us to easily get an early tour. We had breakfast in the cafe, and it was reasonably priced. I later came back for an (extremely overpriced at $7 but very delicious) milkshake. Service was a little slow and there were only about 3 groups there while we were, so if it is crowded it probably will be a while to get your food. Also they made multiple mistakes with our food (eggs over easy instead of over hard, regular bun instead of gluten free), so that wasn't super impressive. I was really interested in getting more historical details on the Chateau, so I asked for the tour that is advertised on the website. Unfortunately, the woman who gave us our tour made it clear that she didn't usually do it, so our tour consisted more of "this is the basement" than actual information on the building's construction and past. That was a bummer, but it wasn't really the focus of our trip. The hotel gift shop has a penny smusher machine, so if you're a collector like me, get excited! Overall, I enjoyed my stay here. It wasn't AMAZING, but the fact that everything was in good repair and clean along with the location and room price contributed to my 4 star rating. Location 5 stars. In the middle of nowhere in a mountain forest right across from the cave entrance. Hotel Atmosphere 5 Stars. Built in the 1930's with lots of big beams, 2 huge fireplaces, lots of lounge comfortable seating. Rooms 3 stars. They are true to the history of the place but everything is simple and a bit worn. There is no tv or wireless service. No ATT cell cover here. If you are looking to get unhooked from the world..... this is a great place. Rooms are large and looked right on to a little pond/waterfall and beyond that the cave entrance. The Cave tour....5 stars +++++. A real adventure. But make sure you are not clostraphobic and can climb a few hundred steps, some uneven and without railings. But really glad we did it. Did I mention that the Chateau is Haunted????? The gift shop is has lots of good stuff. Not much practical stuff though. The restaurants (there are two) were great on atmosphere and were just ok on quality. Prices were high. The grill is like a 30 bar seat area that wides back and forth. Very 1930-1950's. Milkshakes were 5 stars everything else was just ok. Dining is nice and romantic with great views but prices were high and the food was again just ok. Most of the service was very good. So we will probably return. After 2018 they are down a 2 year refurbishment..... so maybe return in 2 years! read more

Very cool old chateau. We all had rooms here-interesting shapes with some having shower only, some bathtubs only. No internet, no tv and no phone connections up there. Big lodge like area downstairs with a piano, writing desks and games. It was great seeing families in chairs reading, playing chess or other games or just socializing. The service is ok. The beds are decent but not great. Very quiet and serene. There are two restaurants-one the coffee shop/deli and one their "fancy restaurant". Service is not refined and the food reflects this as well. The coffee shop is barely passable. No substitutions for anything and not very diet friendly. It must be hard to get regular fresh deliveries up there, but they try. The dining room for the "fancy" dinner is better. I had a decent New York Steak but everything else was mediocre. The bison meatloaf 2 in the party had was deemed okay, the special curry ordered by 2 others was deemed okay, so I guess it was "okay" for around $22 per person. I would come back here someday-with a different room requested and my own food. Visa/MC only. read more

Bad food and worst of all, BAD SERVICE. Came here to visit the caves and afterwards we came here to eat something quick before heading back to Portland. Sat down. It was not until I flagged one of the servers. Then once I placed the order, it took an eternity to ge the food. Now, mind you, this place wasn't busy and it looked like they had enough servers. My husband and I had a trip planned for our anniversary, and were so excited to come here to celebrate. My husband is in the Navy, and his squadron just received orders to leave and assist the disaster relief efforts in Texas from the hurricane. When we explained this to cancel our reservation, the person on the phone said we would not receive our cancellation fee back, and that is was nonrefundable. He asked to speak with a manager, who also confirmed that this cancellation fee would not be returned. When he explained again that this is out of our control, and due to the Navy's help with a natural disaster, the manager responded "Well, the situation in Texas has been going on for a few days already". REALLY?! They should be ashamed- we will be taking our trip at another time and will absolutely NOT be rebooking here- we are disgusted. When I wrote an email explaining this situation and how disappointed we were, we received the following response: "The 10% booking fee is non-refudable to all guest however I did tell your husband if I could rent the room I would refund it. This is going over and above our cancelation policy. Keep in mind we get all kinds of stories and since we do only have 23 rooms in this Beautiful Historic hotel it doesnt give other visitors a chance to book. This being said I will do my best to rent the room and if I can will refund your 10% deposit. Thank You". I can't believe this place is still in business. read more

Yes, this place is rustic but that's part of its charm. The rooms are clean and comfortable and the grand lobby is a great place to hang out and relax. It's not fancy or luxurious so if you are looking for a 5star experience, this place is not for you. But if you want to experience a bygone era in travel and have a unique experience, here it is. The restaurant downstairs offers lovely views and I like that they feature locally made wines. The food is good but not great and expensive for what you get. A mid-May Sunday after rain: one of those crystal clear days when the trees stood out on the hillsides and patches of snow still clung to the mountain tops. A day to be outside. I fired up the bumble bee HOG and headed to Oregon Caves National Monument some 80 miles away for lunch. Of the 19 mile road from Cave Junction, eight miles will test the abilities of driver and vehicle on easy and tight curves. Clouds floated overhead as they formed and dissolved. The hot sun on the firs and cedars produced a sweet fragrances. Perched in a ravine on the mountainside, the Chateau Coffee Shop was not busy even though it was noon. Two lucky couple had the two tables outside next to the pool and waterfall. I was alone inside with the staff. I ordered the buffalo chili that came with jalapeño cornbread. The chili tasted good while the cornbread's sweetness was offset by the hot peppers; it tasted a bit "doughy." The menu had some great sounding entrees and maybe the food should be rated higher: I got a tasty hamburger here some years ago. The ambience is worth 5 stars. Inside is counter seating in a mid-20th century setting. Outside is a courtyard with a waterfall and pool surrounded by mature fragrant cedars. read more

This is definitely an interesting place. It's an old lodge that is also a historic landmark. The rooms have been retrofitted with indoor plumbing, so their are pipes running above your head in some rooms. We had a double room, basically 2 rooms (3 queen beds total) and 1 tiny tiny bathroom. It worked for us for one night and the price was right. My parents and my family of four stayed in this room and it was only $182 (and that included tax!). The restaurant was only ok. The food was good but not great. The restaurant and the gift shop kind of overlap, which is weird because while you are sitting there eating there are people walking right next to you who are browsing in the gift shop. read more

The Chateau Lodge: we stayed for two nights in late may and loved it. however...the radiator heating our room wasn't very effective. it came on sometime early, maybe around 7-ish or so. then went off about 90 minutes later. in the evening, when it got cold, it didn't come back on. we asked at the front desk and the gal said she would turn it on, but it didn't give much heat. all in all, though, a lovely stay. the dining room was not bad, the cafe was pretty good. the surroundings were absolutely lovely The Dining Room: our first meal in the dining room was amazing, simply amazing. connie w was our server and she was out-of-this-world wonderful. hubby and i ordered the flatiron steak which came with greenbeans. hubby had the baked potato, and i opted for fruit. may plated boasted a double serving of veggies, and the fruit platter was plentiful and tasty. we ordered apple pie alamode for dessert - it took so long, my husband cracked a joke abt perhaps they had to go down to cave junction for ice cream. well, connie realized we waited too long as well, as she comped us the dessert. wonderful meal all around. the second dinner we had was good but nothing to write home about. hubby had pasta w/marinara sauce and shrimp - pasta and sauce was good, shrimp was excellent. i ordered the chicken as a petite entre with veggies (5 brussel sprouts), and a a side of fruit instead of rice or potato. the petite chicken breast with the 5 sprouts rolling around on the plate looked quite anemic. the 'fruit' consisted of a tiny little bowl filled with perhaps a half-dozen pieces of cut melon and grapes. what a difference from the night before. had we had this meal first, we would not have returned. read more

Well...where do I start? First of all, the chateau is amazing. You really do feel like you stepped back into time. The views are beautiful, the chateau itself looks original and is cozy, and there is old music playing as you hang out in the main lodge. The staff is very friendly, and the room was dated, but clean. We enjoyed the cave cool cave tour offered, and had a delicious dinner at the restaurant. There is no tv, no wifi, and no cell service. That being said, I am not a ghost hunting fanatic, just a regular girl, and I had read somewhere online that room 310 was haunted-so I absolutely did not want that room. Well, they won't give it to you anyway, unless at capacity because there are too many "incidents" that occur in and around that room. So we got room 301 directly across the hall. From the get-go, I didn't like the vibe. There was large windows that we kept open all night to keep it cool, and a closet door that seemed random. Ok, here are the weird things that happened- yes, you hear footsteps in the hall late at night, like when everyone is asleep and you think, "who the heck is walking around?" Also, the lights in the hall went off and on when we came up the stairs- there was nobody around. Lastly, we slept with those darn windows open all night, and we boiled in that bed! The room was cold, yet were sweating like crazy. No blankets, a thin sheet, and we were scalding hot! We couldn't figure out why. We didn't see any ghost, or hear voices, but it was just an odd experience. Well, we had also discovered the "binder" downstairs. If you ask for it, they will let you read the numerous accounts of scary and unexplained occurrences at the chateau. After reading it, it was clear that 301 had its share of weird happenings including hearing crying in that closet to being very hot in the bed, and much more. Sigh. I really was freaked out the whole time I was there. Ask any staff member what they have experienced and they will give you lots of personal accounts. No thanks, I don't want to hear anymore! If you're not spooked easily, and want to stay at and visit a beautiful, historical chateau, go for it! If you're like me- expect no sleep. We stayed overnight and were pleased with everything. This is a rustic hotel in the mountains of Cave Junction. So I was not expecting a 5-star retreat. On the day we were to leave for OR a surprise snow storm had hit the CJ area. I called the hotel before leaving home and asked if the roads to the chateau were passable. Yes, they were. Beautiful drive up. The hotel is 3 stories. No internet or cell phone connections, and no TV. No refrigerator or microwave in the room. But the family had a nice time anyway. The food is OK in both the dining room and the cafe. The prices probably reflect the price of having supplies delivered up the mountain (windy road). We had brought snacks and drinks in a cooler so we weren't starving for anything. After dinner we stayed busy by playing board games in the lodge area, reading, and listening to the guitar player [who showed up at the last minute because the schedule musicians couldn't make it thru the snow (?).] Our room was large, 2 full beds, plenty of space for the kids to play. The bathroom had a tub/shower. Lighting was dim but it added to the mystique of the hotel. We had a good night's sleep. The tour of the cave was great. Very knowledgeable and enthusiastic Rangers lead the tours. If you have young kids, they can take a short exam on the natural surroundings of the caves (in the Ranger's store) and earn a Junior Ranger badge and certificate. I would recommend the Chateau and the cave tour to friends and family (who can survive without their technological tools for a day). read more

My husband and I were thrilled to stay in this beautiful location for our anniversary. The surrounding caves and nature is really amazing and should be enjoyed. The common areas inside and outside this Chateau are undeniably beautiful, but the rooms themselves are cramped, outdated, and so "rustic" that it just wasn't comfortable. But, the reason I'm giving a low review isn't about the caves or the nature or even the rooms so much as it is about that cafe. Do not eat there if you can help it. Everything we ordered tasted so frozen and processed and I got food poisoning basically right away while staying in the Chateau that night. The staff was understanding enough to comp a part of our meal but it was still an over-priced, disappointing and uncomfortable night. read more

The Chateau is wonderful, if you like historic lodges, which we do. The other reviewers criticisms of the Chateau are accurate, but it felt like the staff makes a good effort. Our room was clean and attractive, and the beds had lovely quilted bedspreads. The lobby is a beautiful place to hang out and relax. Wanted to comment on the restaurant in the Chateau, where we had dinner. They have a captive audience in the Chateau, so the restaurant does not HAVE to be good, but they did a really great job (at least the night we ate there). Our waitress was wonderful, and very helpful in accommodating our vegan and gluten-free diets. The entrees are huge, but they offer to "split" an entree for a split fee of $7.50, where you split the main dish (in our case, the portobello steak on a bed of beans and kale) and we each get our own side dishes (we each had a baked potato, I had a salad, and my wife had a delicious vegetarian tortilla soup). The chef must have felt sorry for us, because he gave us each a small portobello steak of our own. Even the "splits" ended up being more food than we could eat. All of the dishes were excellent. I don't usually like portobello mushroom dishes, and ordered it only because it was the only vegan entree, but it was really good. The food choices in cafe (where we had breakfast and lunch the next day) are limited, but it is a very cute place, and we managed (oatmeal for breakfast, tortilla soup again for lunch). The cave tour is wonderful -- it made the whole stay worthwhile. Although a bit strenuous/scary/claustrophobic at times, it felt like a real adventure. read more

Bed bugsss! I believe I have gotten a bed bug infestation here! I woke up in the morning with 19 red bites in a cluster on my right hip. The hip I was sleeping on. Good thing I noticed before I got home. But now I will have to wash and quarantine all my clothes and throw away my luggage and pray I do not infect my home. Oh please don't infect my house!!! My kids loved the hotel. Staff was super friendly. They liked the old fashioned feel of it. No tv. Had a game room with lots of board games. Lots to explore outside. Great views. It was really cool. The breakfast/lunch counter was great- food and shakes were great. Slow service but they were nice- kind of expect slower service- no biggie. The "fine dining" was not good for the price- The cod I ordered was overlooked and dry. The only reason for losing a star is the horrendous plumbing. The shower pressure was so high, my kids couldn't take a shower because it would make them scream in pain. I could take a shower but only with back facing shower head. It sprayed my face and hurt a lot. I suppose the pressure is high in order to get hot water more quickly, because it takes a while to warm up. This chateau is rustic and has its charms. The place does not have tvs nor wifi which is fine with us. We reserved the family suite which is an adjoining of two rooms (206 & 207). The rooms were stifling hot. With the fans going and opening up windows didn't help at all. Read on trip advisor that there are no other restaurants around so made reservations for their dining room in advanced. The restaurant is connected to the gift shop. My husband ordered a Caesar salad with sides of 4 slices of iron steak, my son had the bison meatloaf and my other son had chicken alfredo. I ordered the shrimp pesto linguine. Caesar salad: was drenched with dressing, the lettuce was warm. Flat iron steak was good. Bison meatloaf: came with mashed potatoes and 3 slices of meat. The meat tasted more like Italian sausage. Linguine: the few shrimps that came with it was grilled, to the point its charred and very dry and no flavor. The pasta was drenched with pesto sauce. The chicken alfredo: was also drenched and the boiled chicken was flavorless. With 4 entrees and no drinks and before gratuity came to $107.00. I would gladly pay that price if the dinner was good but it was very disappointing to say the least. After dinner went on a hike which was very nice and we were the only people on the trail. The room was still very hot, tried to make the best of it. The water temperature to the showers Is inconsistent, if someone in the next room or upstairs flush or use their sink your water temperature can get very hot or cold. Hard to sleep with the floors creaking around you. The bed isn't comfortable. The cave tour was wonderful. Our ranger Neil was very knowledgeable and funny. No stars for the restaurant. Will definitely return for the cave tour but won't be dining there. read more

We stayed here one night on Aug. 14, 2015. The communication from the hotel prior to our visit was a nice welcome - I asked a couple of questions and they were answered promptly and politely. The hotel itself is wonderful - very old lodge style. We had a large room - myself and my fiancee had a room to ourselves, and the kids had a very large adjoining room with two single beds. We enjoyed a ranger talk in the evening and a night walk to look at the meteor shower. Breakfast in the 50s style diner in the morning was very enjoyable. The hotel does not have modern amenities like WiFi, however, it is nice to escape the modern world sometimes. We thoroughly enjoyed the Oregon Caves, which are located right by the lodge - if we are ever in the area, we wouldn't hesitate to stay there again. I took off a star as the check in when we got the hotel was not a great experience - no one was at the desk apart from a trainee - at first she saw us, and then quickly exited through a door behind reception - when she poked her head out - she explained that she was a trainee and that someone would come to help us as she wasn't able - not her fault, perhaps she should not have been left on her own. read more

we did a pit stop' to the oregon caves and 'oregon caves chateau' in the middle of our road trip from sj to portland. (the tour was very cool and) everyone who worked there was so enthusiastic and really into the caves which was nice. we reserved and got the last room. the happy desk clerk said to go up the stairs... go up another set of spooky stairs and our room was on the 3rd floor. he wasn't joking- they were spooky. it would almost be a dump if it weren't so quaint and sparkley clean. our sink was about 3 ft from the bed. (this room had the bathtub only, no shower) the pipes ran across the room's roof. the painted pressboard walls and ceiling gave you sort of the illusion that you were in a gingerbread house. you could hear and feel every movement from your neighbors. but it is what it is... a quaint, nostalgic, old lodge...where families gather in the common rooms to play board games and read. (my husband almost had a heart attack when he didn't see a tv ;)...) fun to be there next to the caves and hike around too. *warning on directions: thanks to google maps and confirmation from our car gps.... we attempted to cut across west through jacksonville from I5. after driving quite a bit on windy roads... it told us to go up a very steep coarse gravel road that was probably a fire road. we had to go back out all the way and around... adding a few hours to our drive. UGH!!! yeah that also put us in after any food was available (like 9 i think...?) so we ate our car snacks for dinner... it's maybe more like 2 stars... but for the service and overall ambiance/experience of it all w/the caves i had to put 3 stars--it was fun... read more

The caves are amazing - it really makes you realize what beauty is hidden underneath you. The rangers are very knowledgeable and make the tour fun and educational. Few places have inspired in me that feeling of romantic melancholy that only occurs in a place with an abundant amount of history and the added intimate use of the bedroom. Hotel Del Coronado comes to mind; as does Hotel Figueroa. The Chateau at Oregon Caves is definitely one of those places. Only a few miles but several minutes from Cave Junction (the two-way roads give way to turns that are barely enough room to fit one car), Oregon Caves just might make you think you've crossed the threshold of time. Located literally across the road from the opening of the caves, you cannot beat the proximity. Certainly, if like us you have spent the day driving, it is a relief to know that after your cave tour, you will have a comfortable (if not air-conditioned) place to rest your weary little wandering feet for the night. There is a separate parking lot for hotel guests, and no ramps or elevators, so accessibility is not a feature of the place. But fortunately for us, steps are not an issue and we were able to hoist our suitcases to our room on the first level, really the best place to stay. Heat rises, and it was a hot day in Oregon (well in the 90s). We visited the upper floors and they were significantly warmer. Even so, the windows in the rooms are true to their time in history and don't have screens, so the room is something like a greenhouse in hot weather if you want to avoid the buggies. But the lobby area is not, and this place is made for communal living. The rooms are charming, with no televisions and no phones. It is a perfect opportunity to spend quality time with the kiddies playing board games, which are plentiful in the game room off the lobby. We played Sorry and had a blast. The lobby sound system plays music from the big band era and from the folk era of the '70s. You'll definitely feel the time loop! We also took advantage of the dining room and enjoyed a good bit of home-cooking. Expensive but worth it to not have to drive back into town. My son's leftover grilled cheese was wrapped in a large piece of foil to look like a swan! After dinner, you can lounge on the bench swing just outside, read about how the View-Master was conceived here, recline in the lobby, or write a diary entry in the journal in your room (which is kept on the cool little wooden vanity). It all feels just a little closer to those essentials that invigorate the soul. Despite the lack of ADA, AC, TV, or Wi-Fi, I have to say that The Chateau at Oregon Caves is as good as it gets for just a little piece of nostalgia and getting back to basics. Wish I Could Give it 5 Stars We had visited Oregon Caves NM several years ago. At that point we were traveling in a motorhome and didn't have use for the lodge. This year we returned and made a plan to spend 4 days at the Chateau. I love the historic lodges in the western national parks and this was my chance to stay in one. Love for hotels with character, however, also means putting up with some of the less comfortable quirks of an old hotel. Since it is a registered historic landmark, the hotel is curtailed from making certain improvements. Nevertheless, the hotel could do more, considering the rates charged. The rooms have very, very squeaky floors. Heat is from a radiator and the system is turned on and off based on the comments by guests. So another guest may feel hot and ask for the heat to be reduced while, at the same time, my wife (who really hates the cold) is freezing. Bathrooms are very basic. Practically no hooks or towel racks in the bathroom means almost no place to put things down. The top of the toilet tank is an option, but there's no toilet lid, thus making that a dangerous choice! There are no hair dryers. The furniture is very heavy and not exactly comfortable. Cell phones don't work in this rather remote location. There is no wifi and there are no TVs. In spite of the negatives, there are lots of positives. The lobby area is beautiful with a huge fireplace, comfy on a cold and wet day. The staff is extremely friendly and they do their best to meet guests' needs. The atmosphere is peaceful and the views into the trees are very nice. And, of course, you are right next to the cave as well as several nice hiking trails. The cafe is open for breakfast and lunch and the dining room for dinner. Both are very pleasant, but rather expensive. If you want a different option, it's about a 40 minute drive to Cave Junction where there are a few good options for a meal. The Chateau is only open from early May to early October. And, for what you get, the room rates are pretty high. They seem to run some good deals in May and we utilized a "pay one night and get a second night for half price" deal which helped a bit. Overall, I really enjoyed my stay. read more

Pleasant smallish old 1930's lodge set near the caves that you can tour and explore, nice 50's style dining setup in basement, great public areas, smallish and basic (but comfy) rooms, overall much nicer than being in a motel, which is about the only competition this place has...a word of warning, dont stay on the 3rd floor unless you like spooks for company....this place truly is haunted, I heard them myself and I'm (or rather was) a total nonbeliever in ghosts....but here they do indeed walk in the night. read more

Had burgers after our cave tour . They have bison as well as grass fed beef. Awesome !! Rehydrated with beer n vanilla coke:) yummy

Have you seen that episode of The Office where Pam and Jim stay at Shrute Farms and get the "Irrigation Room"? Yep, that is exactly what staying here was like: surreal, fun, and full of good stories - we even met a Nixon (as in Richard). The room was small but manageable and the staff was very nice. The only negative is that the food is entirely overpriced and underwhelming so I recommend looking for dinner somewhere down the mountain. read more

The rooms need to be redone horribly. the price is crazy high for a room where we laid in bed at night looking at the pipes. I felt like I was in my grand dads attic. With that being said.... We had the best dinner EVER that evening. The dinning is very nice with candles on the tables and the food was super yummy. They serve a lot of local grown produce and I was impressed with the dinner service. Lunch in the café .... not so great. read more

This is a review of dinner at the Chateau restaurant. Wow, what a beautiful place. Located far away from anywhere in the Oregon Cave National Monument, this is not somewhere to just drop in. We stopped at the Chateau as part of a road trip from Sonoma to Portland and made the dinner part of the occasion. Prior to our reservation time, we stopped by the restaurant and picked up a bottle of wine and two glasses to drink upstairs in front of their lovely picturesque windows. The staff encouraged us to make ourselves at home and enjoy our pre-dinner time. The menu was filled with attractive choices but the Chateau deserves special merit for having a group of entrees listed under Petite Entrees. Both my wife and I ordered from this list and found amounts generous enough and for once didn't feel guilty for leaving too much or bloated from eating too much. I ordered the bison meatloaf made with sausage from the nearby superb Taylor Meats. Accompanied by a generous sized baked potato and nicely cooked vegetables, this was a satisfying meal. My wife had the hanger steak with a mushroom reduction; perfectly cooked and very tasty. The staff was very attentive at every level. If you happen to have an opportunity to stop here, you will not regret it. read more

Stayed one night at the chateau. The staff is amazing friendly. The lodge is gorgeous. We stayed in room 204 and went down for dinner first thing. The food is amazing! We had meatloaf and the flat iron garlic butter steak, plus wedding soup and the tiramisu torte. We were wowed. There was also a dessert wine called foris vineyard moscato that tasted like pear heaven. If nothing else you have to try the food! Our server was super friendly and even recommend some things to do locally during our visit. The room stay itself was okay. It's an old lodge full of history which I loved, but you also have to remember it's an old building. Old pipes, no cell reception or internet, no tv, the hot water takes a good while to warm up. Floors are super squeaky and they warm you not to let water get on the floor to avoid water damage. It's very cute and quaint but once I found out there was a ghost about I had a hard time sleeping!!!! (They have a ghost blog which some pretty active ghost stuff) anyway, definitely would come back to eat :) read more

What a find! I am a fan of historical lodges in the national parks but I had not heard of this one until I started doing some research while I was planning a trip to Oregon. This is definitely a "destination" spot as you have to drive a ways from the main highway, but worth it! The cave tour was super.....interesting, adventurous, and informative. But the best part was walking a few steps after touring the caves and checking into this great old hotel! Nice room with a view of the pond, comfortable, clean and well managed and maintained. The food at the restaurant was good, great service, and we sat by a huge picture window watching the sun set through the forest. It's an old place so everything is a little creaky, and there is no internet, phone or TV, which added to the charm as far as I was concerned. You can sit by the fireplace in the main lobby on a chilly night and read while watching the fire, or sit and relax even when there isn't a fire. Quiet, peaceful.....loved it! Great retreat. It was completely by accident we found this Gem in the woods. After a wonderful tour of the cave. And hearing about the History of the Chateau we were lucky enough that they had a room available. Now if you are looking for the bells and whistles this would not be the place for you but if you are willing to shut off your electronically devices I highly recommend it. The Café was playing some oldies but goodies on the radio setting the feel of walking back in time. The servers were very friendly and let us know if we wanted a quick meal that we should grab sandwiches to go in the Gift Gallery. We didn't mind the wait why hurry while your on vacation? They have the best Old fashion Milk Shakes that I have ever had. We spent the rest of the day walking the many trails that they have around the area following the babbling brook down the No Name Trail. In the evening we had a wonderful dinner and there again no issues with service or food quality other then fairly large portions, which they saved for us till we checked out to go. The Gift Gallery has the best selection of local art work that we have seen visiting other National Parks. You can tell that the Chateau is all about the local community and how they try to support one another, I guess back to the term it takes a village. We enjoyed local music in the lobby after dinner while playing board games with the kids. What a place to unwind and remember the simple times. Our room was clean and affordable and set the tone for the ambiance of the entire stay. Kidos to the Staff at the Oregon Caves Chateau and I would highly recommend the adventure. read more

I was prepared for the rustic feel of this old chateau, but when you step up to the top floor in summer it is oppressively hot and humid. Rooms are not only surprisingly small but the walls are so thin you feel like you can't lean up against them with out breaking them. We took the cave tour and unfortunately had a very rude tour guide that treated everyone like they were children or criminals. She rushed us through and seemed annoyed anytime anyone wanted to stop and actually look at the cave. Yet we held on to hope and ate at the "fine dining" restaurant and were severely disappointed. The soup was disgusting, the steak was served barely warm and cut in to slices, and everything was horribly bland. It did not taste homemade or fresh. Best of all, after a night of twisting and turning on a thin uncomfortable mattress in the heat I awoke with the worst food poisoning I have ever had. Full blown fever, vomiting, all the great stuff you associate with eating unsanitary food. If you had a good experience, you were very lucky. But if you are thinking about staying here and you have any dietary sensitivities, stay far away from that kitchen. read more

We really enjoyed our rustic stay at the Chateau! It is not a modern 5 star experience, but a charming step back in time to the 1930's when this treasure was crafted. Friendly service and real keys. We really enjoyed falling asleep to the sound of the waterfall and waking up to the view of the trees. Unfortunately our 4 year old was 2 inches shy of the 42" requirement to take the cave tour- next time! The trails in the area are well maintained. Wildlife is abundant and we got a close up view of some deer that were happily snacking on the sides of the visitor center. My boys (husband included) managed to survive a night without that modern day conveniences of tv, cell service, and air conditioning (it stays refreshingly cool and is a great excuse to keep the windows open to smell the pines). Live piano music in the evenings, books, games, and puzzles to keep brains and fingers busy. We had a fabulous dinner in the restaurant (worth the extra $$ - we highly recommend the buffalo meatloaf with mashed potatoes and bean and bacon soup!) Kid menus available. We had a light breakfast in the cafe- generously portioned and reasonably priced. It's worth the experience to dine in this classic counter-style establishment. We hope to return someday. read more
