Very skeptical at first since there seemed to be almost no one eating there, but we gave it a shot and were completely surprised. The service was awesome and the ambiance was good. I had the chile relleno and it was great. The rice is on point and the salsa for the chips as-well. Their habanero salsa is fire. I'm gonna go out on a limb here, and say that these are the best tacos we've had in the entire Austin, Manchaca, Kyle, San Marcos area. My husband is the biggest taco freak on the planet, so he literally made it his job in life to try every taco joint in the entire area. As you can imagine, this took quite some time. But it was our mission to find the best taco....and this is where it lives. My husband loves the picadillo & potato, the pastor, the chicken fajita, and the brisket tacos. My favorite? The chicken fajita taco! Big, flavorful, perfectly-grilled white meat chicken. But I gotta say that the brisket tacos are pretty legendary, too. Oh yes...I have to mention their breakfast, too. Welp, I'll start by saying the patio is great during Covid times, they have a fan out there and the tables are shaded. The food left a lot to be desired. My husband and father in law both had the enchiladas with red sauce, which was not red at all. The sauce was a bland brown gravy, and the chicken itself was under seasoned. I got the chicken fajita plate and I've never been so underwhelmed by chicken fajitas. They didn't come out in a sizzling pan, and the chicken looked like it was just defrosted and reheated in a pan. Nothing special here. It's just typical Mexican food. We liked the open patio and being able to sit outside with our dog. Our server was very friendly and attentive. The complimentary chips and salsa were good. They serve breakfast all day, which is what drew me here. I'm a sucker for breakfast foods. However, the omelet I ordered was just okay. There wasn't much chicken fajita meat in it and the broccoli wasn't cut small enough for the size omelet. I'm glad we went off the beaten path of chain restaurants to try Chavelos. Service was awful, we went inside and asked if we could sit on the patio and they approved. So we found a table and sat out there for 10 minutes before anyone greeted us and they weren't happy we were there. I got the beef enchiladas with queso on top and the queso was basically plain velveeta. It even hardened on the top like velveeta does, absolutely flavorless and cheap. Just moved to this area and was looking for good Mexican food. This unfortunately was not the place . The tortillas were terrible if you are use to store bought package ones then you'll be ok. They were papery and with that plastic taste. The fajitas were charred remains of what was once meat, the rice was far from authentic kinda like orange sticky rice. We took several bites trying to give it the benefit of the doubt but we were not able to eat the food. I know this is a harsh review but it is a true review from our experience. The guacamole was bright green as though frozen. Not terrible but not as good as grocery guacamole. I've read the reviews for Chavelos - either I came on a bad night or the standard for Mexican food is low in Buda. First off, the parking is insane! If you can't get a parking space, you'll be parking elsewhere (I parked by City Hall). No big deal, but just a heads up for others. Walking in I wasn't sure if I seat myself or wait to be seated, but eventually a guy came over and told me to sit anywhere. That's cool. Got my table and was ready for some amazing Mexican food based on all the great reviews. The chips and salsa came and the salsa was really bland. A friend and I both ordered chicken fajitas but for some reason, instead of the bell peppers and onions, we got shredded lettuce and tomatoes. That was ok but then we realized we got two small tortillas between the two of us. Of course, I know I could ask for more, BUT just two for two people to start off?! Anyhoo, the food was 'meh'. Not terrible, but decent Tex-Mex. They have "gravy" carne guisada which should piss me off, but the beef was nice and tender. Their rice and beans need some major tweaking. That shit was too bland. Props for having breakfast all day so if my drunk ass wants eggs, rice, beans, carne guisada, one crispy taco and pancakes at 11:00 a.m., I can always count on Chavelos. I've lived in Kyle for a year now but I still drive to Buda to get me some Chavelos. I've tried a few things but have finally settled on the #3, no rice with charro beans. Great charro beans, great salsa (especially the spicy), great tortillas, guacamole, fajitas, regular tacos, great migas... GUESS WHAT EVERYONE? They have picadillo even though it's not on the menu!... and it's pretty freaking good. Really love it's simplicity and the great service I get every time. In Buda looking at homes and getting hungry. We wanted to have the local feel will try this place. Some locals we're regulars and seem to have good experiences. We ordered and got our food. The chicken was dry in the enchiladas but overall the beans had to be the best. Made with bacon that you can taste was the highlight of the meal. Servers looked a tad mad not to many smiles.l No Fresh Tortilla or in-house made chips. Those kind of things make a difference when it comes to authentic Mexican food. The absolute best breakfast tacos I've found. They have a fairly large menu and everything is priced well, but I can't help but get breakfast tacos every time I go no matter what time of day it is. You get a lot for your money. Waitresses are usually pretty friendly. They keep their eyes on your drink level, while keeping their distance (which is what I prefer). The one and only drawback to this place is the parking, which can easily be a nightmare more often than not. However, it is a very small price to pay for the great food. read more

Fantastic food today! I ordered the lunch barbacoa plate, and I was genuinely surprised at how good it was. I'm a San Antonio girl, so I am super picky about Mexican food. They surpassed my expectations. The salsa was great, the barbacoa just greasy enough to be moist and soft. (Sorry to all the people who hate the word moist.) The avocado, lettuce, and pico were nice and fresh. Now, the beans...WOW! So awesome! And I actually ate my rice (not usually a fan).
