I haven't gone to any other U-pick cherry farms so I can't compare Chavez with other farms. I can only talk about my experience at this farm. I go pick cherries at Chavez once a year for 7-8 years now. I wake up very early and try to get there right when they open so that I don't get stuck in traffic. It can get crowded. Also, this can help you get a parking spot for sure. They do have a big parking lot though so it's probably okay. Price this year: $4/lb. They accept credit card now too. I love cherries here. They are quite big, sweet and a little tangi. Yummy!! Just make sure to be patient and don't pick the ones that are not that dark yet. Keep going until you find a good tree. Then you can commit to picking them. I've seen people that pick too many of the light pink color ones and then ended up threw them away so they don't have to pay. So bad. It's cherry season so the gals and I decided to drive up from the South Bay to pick some cherries. The two girls working the stand were so sweet and gave us advice on which cherries were their favorites. We grabbed a couple buckets and we were off. There were so many cherries and we were more than happy to have our fill of samples. So sweet! At $4 a lb these were on the pricier side but worth it for how much fun we had. Cherry season began this weekend, with Chavez and another farm being the earliest to open this season. We went on Sunday @ 8:30 and there were so many cherries on the trees! We didn't even make it past the 6th tree from the beginning of the row! There were that many cherries! Cherries were plump and juicy. Of course, the higher up the tree, the redder and bigger the cherries. Not too sure if this farm allows it, but next time, I plan to bring a step ladder. Another tip, go early. It gets hot in Brentwood. I also notice that u-pick farms tend to get crowded as the morning progresses- so another reason to go early! As far as Covid protocol, masks required. I noticed everyone was respectful, kept their masks on and kept their distance. read more

So we decided to stop by here this weekend since we love cherries. The prices are fair at $4/pound but I was expecting sweeter cherries. You would want to really come here with your kids for the cherry picking experience, not so much for the value. They were firm and crisp, but just not sweet... at least in the area where we went in which is to the left "after you pass the cone" they would tell you as you walk in. We kept trying different cherries on various trees, but still no sweet ones. You'll also notice some cherries that we're either yellow or a green color... don't eat those because they are super tart and you'll just spit them out. So the atmosphere was busy... when you see the lines for those in the payment line, you'll reconsider even going in, but you should. When you approach the entrance booth you'll get a big orange bucket and told where to go when you walk inside. It was just weird when you get to certain areas how families have just laid out blankets and hanging out under the trees inside, but oh well. There were very few ladders available unlike other orchards in the area that have many more ladders to use for customers. This would of helped because if you look, the sweeter and darker cherries are way on top of each tree, which you won't be able to reach and would need a ladder. Some tips... It's very dusty, so don't wear your best shoes or pants if your going somewhere important afterwards. It was sunny, so I would bring some type of headwear. Park wherever you see a spot, because most of the spots closer to the booths will be full. Bring cash, since the cash line is much shorter than the credit/debit line when it's time to pay. There is an ice cream stand near the payment lines, so bring more cash if your bringing kids, because they will want ice cream. And you might want to bring some water if it's a hot day. Although our experience was ok, I would probably want to explore another orchard next time... maybe one in that area that has more fruits to pick or even a fruit stand with local fruit and vegetables. The drive here was ok, but everyone was out... I knew that going in because of the traffic getting here. We still had a good time. read more

I went here with my family this morning and it was a fun trip. Took us roughly 1 hour to get there but it was totally worth it. We had to get up early to get ready and left home around 7:30 am to 8:30 am. There are a couple reasons that we needed to get there early: First of all, to avoid crazy traffic on the way there (you know, this is the cherry season and picking cherries is one of the most popular outdoor activities in this area around this time of the year); Secondly, it is the best time of the day to be under the sun: getting natural vitamin D, cool air ( not too hot when it gets closer to noon time) Finally, the lines for chẹck out is not crazy long when it is the time for us to get ready to go home Here, you can pay by credit card or cash. read more

I was not planning on visiting Chavez U-Pick Cherries, but a last minute option opened up and I headed to Brentwood. Living in Sacramento, the trip is a bit long although nice through the delta. Their location is very large nestled between all the other u pick orchards. Parking is generous, but they fill up fast. The process is pretty simple. Sign a waiver, grab a bag, pick cherries, and pay by the pound. There was a long line to enter and to pay. Facilities are sparse with portable toilets and cash only. Expect sun and dust and bring water! Fortunately the experience is pretty easy. The trees are very accessible with big and juicy cherries at every height for the whole family. They charged $3.50/lb with no parking or entry fees. Contra Costa still has some strict COVID requirements but it's pretty easy in the orchard. It's not worth a trip from Sacramento, but it's a nice trip from the East Bay or Stockton. Highway 4 isn't the best and there isn't much else other than picking cherries. Your local farmers market may be cheaper overall but the experience is worth at least one visit. read more

My best friend and her family and I visited this orchard sometime in May and they have very huge and sweet coral cherries . The cherry trees were nice but it took a LONG time before we could find a cherry tree. It's not the companies fault for the lack of cherries but if you decide to come here be prepared to hunt for them. There is also a scarce amount of ladders which makes it difficult to pick cherries as some of the best ones are at the top. Without the ladders, they're impossible to reach. Best farm for fresh cherries! The cherries are unbelievably sweet and it cannot get any better than that. This year it is $3.50 per pounds. Which I think is a pretty good price considering you're basically eating all you can eat cherries! This is an awesome place to pack a picnic basket and enjoy the warmth of the sun! I would recommend bringing some water or a cool treat to cool down since they don't really sell anything here other than cherries. Lots of parking and there's also port a potties. read more

We came on a Saturday, knowing it was going to be crazy packed, but couldn't resist, lol. When driving in, the "parking lot" is just dirt where more trees could be planted on, so you make up your parking spot. There's a guy guiding you in. The porta potties are right next to the parking area. Further up is where you get a 2 gallon bucket, one per person for your cherries. Also the area where you pay. Once you have your bucket, it's go time! Oh the person giving you the bucket tells you where the good spots are too. Ours was way in the back. Getting to the trees, sadly it looked like it was all already picked. This was the first weekend they opened too. They just opened on Thursday and we went two days after. For me I didn't get to pick much, since I'm short and all the cherries were way above my head. I'm 5 feet. I was the one looking for the good cherries and yelling "over here" or "found some." Which wasn't as fun, but it worked. My boyfriend however was lucky enough to reach some, but then had to stand on the bucket to pick the rest. He's 5'11. We started off slow, but later on managed to get 12 1/2lbs. I'm picky too. I like the dark red cherries. Below is a pic of my friends bucket too. She got 9lbs. We were there over three hours. The sun was out! Towards the end of our picking I noticed there weren't any people around us. I didn't even hear other voices besides my friends. When we got back to the paying area, the parking lot had about 12 cars in it, compared to when we arrived, it was completely full. We asked the workers, if it gets like that during the that time which was around 2:30 and they said no. Noone knew where the people were at. Everyone was kinda weirded out by it, lol. It was nice tho, no line. They were friendly people. I paid $21 for 6lbs. My Bf paid $22.75 for 6 1/2lbs. It's $3.50 for a pound. CASH ONLY! Overall, I like this place. They don't charge for parking (free parking), they don't have an entrance fee (it's a nice welcoming feeling), and I think they're the cheapest for the pound; $3.50. Other places are $4 for a pound. So few things to remember: bring a HAT or wear SUNGLASSES, wear SUNSCREEN, bring WATER, bring CASH. Happy picking!!! read more

I have been to several cherry orchards, but Chavez U-Pick Cherries is kind of like a factory for cherry-picking. 1 star off: There are giant tour buses that come here that dump giant loads of tourists. The parking attendant is very strict about cars parking in a certain way, even though the parking lot is really a dirt lot without any markings. In fact, I witnessed them yelling at two cars to re-park. 1 star off: The man handing out buckets is also very strict with the buckets. I asked for an extra bucket for a friend, and he refused to give me an extra one. I don't know what the big deal is...he had plenty of buckets and they are free for customers. 1 star off: There were lines to pay for cherries after you pick them. The trees here are low, so you can pick some cherries without ladders. If you walk further from the entrance, there are more fruit to be picked. My family spent about an hour here and picked about 4 lb. total. Overall, I think Chavez U-Pick is fine for a quick, factory-like experience, but I would not come here to actually *enjoy* cherry-picking or be treated like a unique human being. read more

Went cherry picking on Saturday 5/20/23. Lots of ripe red cherries on the trees. Orchards maintained very well. Cherries reasonably priced. 1 star taken off because not enough ladders to pick the cherries near the tops of the trees. We had to wait 20 minutes for a ladder. read more

Since it was a long weekend, I decided to go cherry picking for the first time and let me tell you -- it was hot but rewarding! Due to the hot weather, we decided to arrive early (at 10:30 AM), and there was already a long line. Just a tip, if you want to speed up your queue time, you can print out your own waiver at home to bring with you. Once your waiver has been signed, someone will direct you to the cherry trees and you can begin picking! The heat picks up rather quickly when you are in the orchard, so I would advise you to bring a hat and a bottle sunscreen. Also, it is best to arrive early in the morning to have first access to ripe cherries. Oftentimes, they run out of ripe cherries by midday. When you've picked your fair share of cherries, you pay for them at the exit ($3.50/pound). Overall, my experience here was fun and I can see myself coming back here again next year! read more

I will warn you to go here early. We thought we were early but there were already so many people by the time we arrived at 9:30 AM on a Sunday. I suppose everybody is trying to get cherries before they run out of them due to the drought. When we left about half and hour later, the parking lot was completely full and they had run out of buckets to give people. We had never been to this particular farm before for cherry picking and I was a bit worried. Our usual place has never let us down and the one time we went somewhere else, the cherries were disappointing. At first, I thought we were going to be disappointed again as we went by tree after tree absolutely stripped bare (by hordes of people I presume). However, many rows back and over the trees had plenty of cherries. The cherries were a bit less sweet and ripe than in previous years (we were there a week earlier than usual), but they were still very good quality. We picked about 10 pounds. Because of the drought and lack of cherries, prices are $3.50 a pound this year. Still worth every penny especially when I think about how these wonderful trees are supporting these farmers. read more

2011 prices were $2.50/pound, which is super-reasonable. Cherries at the supermarket are often $3 or $4/pound, but you never get to pick the individual cherries you are bringing home. The cherries at the market or store are often pre-packaged in bags, containers, or boxes. Lame. They have two kinds of cherries here, according to the person we asked in front: Corals and Rainiers. Not sure on the spelling. The place is a little hard to find at first, because there is no physical address, so just get to the area, and it should be easy to find, since there are Chavez employees standing in front wearing bright green shirts waving buckets. The shirts have "Chavez" on them, so that should help clear things up, even though there are tons of orchards and farms in the vicinity. Try to come earlier in the day, because it does get crowded later in the day, they only have so many buckets, and it tends to get very hot in Brentwood as the day goes on. There are tons of cherries everywhere, and they are all the perfect stage of ripeness right now. I just went this past weekend, and there were tons of trees and myriad fruit on the trees. There are still quite a few unripe cherries, so hopefully, the season will last another few weeks. Fun! We came home with three buckets. I want to come back for more soon. CASH ONLY. read more

Wasn't really impressed with Chavez. Pease Ranch is the way to go! But unfortunately they were closed yesterday for Memorial's Day. I know...wha?!?!?! sad face. $2.50/lb. Lots of trees but barely any fruits. You will have to go towards the front and end sections where not a lot of people go to. No picnic areas and you can't bring food/ animals inside the ranch (although I saw some people doing it anyway). Cherries were sweet but ripe (I like them crunchy). No ladders available. Pease Ranch has a picnic area, ladders, and different types of cherry trees. They only had 2 different type of cherries at Chavez. read more

Season opened on 13 May 2017. Other nearby farms in brentwood also open as of 20 May. This farm opens at 8 am and has ample parking area. Come as early as possible to get best cherry for pick up and to avoid long queues (for parking, buckets and payments). Ripe cherries but less produce compared to last year (in my opinion). As usual, the best tip is to go till the last rows and sideways from main path as possible to get more easier picking choices. read more

Drove to Brentwood to pick cherries for the first time. I open my yelp and pull the first one with decent reviews. We got there around 9:30am, and it was already busy. They have people directing traffic. Grabbed my buckets and started looking for the best trees to pick my cherries. A bucket can fit around 12 pounds, at 3.50 per pound I ended up with 130 bucks in cherries. Than you have to get in line to pay (long line) it took us around 30min to pay. Place is really muddy, so wear hiking shoes. And extra one if you don't wanna get your car all dirty. I'll be back next year. read more

I came here for the last 3 years and they have the largest cherries. The trees are short and if you bring a tall person you can get most of the cherries. It can get very busy here so I like to come early Saturday morning before the crowd gets there. It can get very muddy after the rain and/or be very hot so dress according.
