We were there to celebrate my brother's 40th birthday. Brought a big group, spent good money, and wanted to have a fun night. Instead, we left angry and honestly just sick to our stomachs. It started with a woman swinging around a fake gun during karaoke. Nobody batted an eye. No staff said anything. How is that even remotely okay in this day and age? But the worst part? A white guy gets on the mic and just starts singing the N-word like it was nothing. Over and over. And the DJ didn't stop it--instead, he defended it. Literally said, "He can say whatever he wants, whether it's the N-word or not. He's singing a song." Are you serious? I don't care if it's in the lyrics. I don't care if you're drunk. You don't say that word. And it's even worse when the DJ--the person running the mic--backs it up like it's no big deal. That moment made it really clear: they don't care who feels uncomfortable, disrespected, or unsafe. As long as people keep drinking, they'll let anything slide. And yeah--I get it. We live in a mostly white area. But that doesn't make this okay. That actually makes it even more important to speak up when this kind of thing happens. And Cheapskates didn't. The drinks might be cheap, but the values here are cheaper. The vibe? Trash. And the silence around blatant racism? Loud as hell. We won't be back. And I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone who expects even the bare minimum of respect. read more

Cheapskates is a casual sports bar that is right in the heart of Old Town Arvada and across from the G-line Light Rail Station. They serve traditional bar food, have beer on tap (bottles and cans, too) and plenty of hard liquor, if you prefer something stronger. This has become my go-to lunch spot in Arvada. Their burgers, tater tots, salads and chicken wings are all very good and better than you'd expect for a sports bar. They have some of the best food in that part of town and all of it is very reasonably priced. The staff is, for the most part, very friendly and attentive. There is the occasional bartender who is having an off day or who doesn't seem to notice when you walk in and sit down. I think part of the issue is they are often overworked/short-staffed. Little bars like this can go from empty to packed in ten minutes, appearing to sometimes catch the servers and kitchen staff off-guard. Frequently, the bartender also has to provide table service, which means they're constantly moving between the bar and dining area. After about five or six p.m., they usually bring in an additional server and have a bouncer checking IDs. The crowd here is definitely a mixed bag. During the day, you have older folks and working professionals coming in for lunch, a quick beer/shot or to catch a ballgame. At night, the place turns a bit more rowdy, young and loud. There's also usually at least a few people outside smoking cigarettes / weed, which can turn people off and make the place look seedier than it is. I've heard about fights breaking out here, but never actually seen one. There's also, unfortunately, a fair number of homeless people nearby - who mostly congregate across the street near the light rail station. It's disappointing this part of town is attracting more and more of these types. All in all, worth checking out if you're in the area and looking for a bite to eat or a cold drink. read more

I am not giving this bar 1 star because of the food, chef or delightful blonde lady bartender. The chef presented our food wearing a mask on and was extremely hospitable as he has been every visit in the past. I genuinely love coming to this place, sitting in the "ski lift" seat and watching "chive tv". Unfortunately my visit today was a DANGER TO MY HEALTH, PERSONAL SAFETY AND SPACE. In March 2020 our city was been affected by the Covid 19 pandemic, restaurants have barely reopened and I feel extremely guilty writing a negative review during this time. While eating our food one of their door men (white male, blonde hair, grey hat, blue eyes) who was off duty was playing the video game machine with 3 males and one female friend in the immediate entry. My review is regarding his and one friend (orange shirt) disturbing and disgusting behavior only. Orange shirt rubbed up against our table and hovered over my plate while waiting his turn. The door man at TWO points in our 45 min meal sneezed without covering his face, wasn't wearing a face covering and blew a snot rocket proudly in front of his buddies onto the floor (who began to high five and laugh with him) This behavior is not expected or accepted by a patron LET ALONE A MEMBER OF STAFF. This man is a public health risk and danger to society who should be reprimanded, required to wear a mask at all time working or not working or fired for his behavior. First off, I didn't find the bartenders to be leathery at all. In fact, they seemed quite pleasant and were quick to be of service, despite a fairly dense crowd of patrons. Just a friendly little bar & grill in Old Towne Arvada. We dropped in with a Groupon on a Saturday afternoon. They have several tasty beers on tap. I enjoyed the Sierra Nevada. And, I love that they serve their beers in two sizes, pint & large. Unfortunately, they only do Pitchers for birthday parties. But, they have a deal where you can get 20 pitchers for $25 on your birthday. So, we may have to come back and take advantage of that. I had the anti-vegan burger and it was tasty. Their fries are phenominal! There is a small patio area. But, if the weather is nice, expect it to be packed. Inside wasn't bad, there was a nice, big bank of windows for us to people watch through. It seemed like the only staff when we were there were the bartender and the cook who brought out the food. So, service seemed slow. They could use a cocktail server. Absolutely disgusted! I frequent this place and do so to follow Sera the karaoke d.j. Unfortunately I will never return to this establishment after the poor service on New Year's Eve. Let's start with the bartenders, who may appear pretty but their attitudes quickly make them ugly. They move at a turtle speed and have zero care that they have numerous people to help. I pay cash and to have a $13 tab, give a $20 for payment, and to have my change kept... not cool! As a bartender myself I know it is never okay to assume you can keep the change unless you're told to do so. The place ran out of bottled beer, on a holiday they should've been more prepared. A friend of mine came in, driving, and only planned to partake in a beer and a pickle shot to bring in the new year. He was far from buzzed, but dropped his phone in between the bar stools, after finding it in the crowd of people he was tagged by the bouncer and told he was too drunk and escorted out. He is an older gentleman that doesn't exactly fit their "crowd," and I strongly feel he was discriminated for his attire and age. What a crock! This place is going in the dumpster and I am so glad there are several other options in the area. Go somewhere that you can feel like a wanted customer with the option to tip at your discretion. I went there with some friends on Saturday, December 15, 2018. We opened a tab, bought several drinks, then when we received the itemized bill, they had overcharged us by 2 drinks. When we approached them about it, they gave us attitude and said they have security cameras to prove we order those drinks. When we suggested to look at the cameras they said they didn't want to....very rudely. THEN!!! When we tried to leave, they stopped us saying we never closed our tab when we clearly had a receipt to prove we had. I've been frequenting this nice little bar with my wife for the past 5 years... We met at this wonderful hole in the wall, while waiting in the bathroom line one night. We don't come as often as we once did, due to the little rascals.... But when we do get a sitter we always stop by Skates. We went last week for taco Tuesday... can't beat $1.50 tacos! But Noel, who usually worked days was working the night shift. We always avoided her because of her attitude and how rude she was to my wife. It's like she hates other women, weird. Anyway we still went in with her working and there wasn't a cook so Noel was extremely overwhelmed. We weren't able to get food which wasn't her fault. But then she decided to show us her true colors and treated us like dirt. Passive aggressive, fake smiles, just very unprofessional. I talked to some regulars I know from back in the day and they tell me she's scaring a lot of folks off. And she's the GM?!?! I don't know how that happened. She is no Sydney that's for darn sure! Very cramped space, extremely aggresive and rude personnel at the door who have instigated with memebers of my party both time I went there and worst of all the staff changes their tips on their copy of the receipt. I will not patronize this establishment as long as they refuse to abide by the Colorado Clean Indoor Air Act, and the City Code of the City of Arvada. In Colorado, it is illegal to smoke within 15 of the entrance of a building. In Arvada, the same is illegal within 25 feet. This establishment, however, not only refuses to abide by that law, they leave a butt can outside their front door to encourage civil disobedience. What's worse is that the City of Arvada refuses to enforce either the state or the local law in regard to smoking. This is a big bonanza to smokers because you can smoke freely at this establishment, and not worry about being hassled either by the ownership or the city. More power to you. I, however, value my health and my lungs, and choose to take my business where I can ruin my liver without ruining my lungs. As long as this business does not abide by the CCIAA, I will never step foot inside, and, if you are a non-smoker, I suggest you follow my lead. Additionally, in order to keep the kitchen cool on hot days, they open the back door which has a screen in need of repair. Insects can easily pass through the large holes in that screen. If you dine at this establishment, just know that you may be exposing yourself to insect infestation, and eating fly eggs. Drink the drinks, but avoid the food. read more
