stopped by for a simple slice and walked away seeing red - not red form the pizza sauce, but red with mild rage - When I walked up, there were no slices in the case, so I politely asked how long it would take to get one. The owner's response: "I won't give you a time, I don't have any slices." Not "it'll be a few minutes," not "we're done with slices for the night," just attitude. When I tried to clarify--"So are you saying you're not selling slices anymore tonight?"--he snapped back, "You won't order a slice, don't you see I don't have any slices," - condescending? More than a little bit- a tone I've not heard from a food business since before they were all struggling to survive through covid- maybe he still thinks that a customer doesn't have an option - The wild part is that the pizza itself is basic/mediocre on a good day: meh sauce, forgettable crust, and nothing that would make you go out of your way to eat here if it wasn't sitting in a busy food cart pod. This place is absolutely coasting entirely on location, not quality - definitely not hospitality. Meanwhile, there's another pizza spot - Lolo's - literally a block away with better pies and staff who actually seem to like having customers. Same neighborhood, totally different experience: they manage to be friendly, clear, and respectful while serving significantly better pizza. If you want great pizza and human courtesy, walk the extra block. This crack in the wall made it very clear they don't care whether you order or come back, and after this interaction, I won't be doing either. Edit: After the owner comment: Don't come on here and try to gaslight me with the "sorry you felt this way" you're only sorry I posted a review - your bad attitude and continues with your follow up and "tell me where to go cause I want to learn from them" learning what a good pizza is sadly won't teach you humility or respect for customers - but here is a list (and yes different styles of pizza - but what they all do have in common is good and most times great customer service) Lolo's, Otto's, Pizza Thief, Dimo's Apizza, Ken's Artison Pizza, Paladin, Life of Pie, Red Sauce Pizza, Grana Pizza Napoletana, The turning peel... All worth the drive if you're specifically looking for good pizza... I was rather disappointed after reading the previous reviews, I thought it was going to be much better. Location: I was originally going to stop by on Tuesday, but they're closed, which is a bit odd. The location is a bit confusing to find since there's only 1 sign at the very back of the plaza that tells you where the door is at, I accidentally walked into the bar thinking it was inside and connected, a sign near the sidewalk would be helpful. It's near the very back for anyone wondering. It actually smelled pretty good when I walked in and looked fairly clean. There was no real dirt or dust that I could make out. Pizza: I got the 12 inch sausage which comes with "House sausage, fresh mozzarella, basil & pecorino Romano" and at first glance, it looks very nice. I ordered around noon and picked up about 20 min later, the pizza was cold, not even warm, just cold. The sauce was disappointing, low viscosity, very runny and had a watery consistency. It says "house sauce" so they either didn't reduce it by simmering which allows solids to concentrate because the low heat evaporates water and/or they didn't strain it properly. I wouldn't order it again. Girl at counter was nice. I will give credit for the under carriage (photo included), it was very nice. However, when the under carriage is the best part of the pizza, that's not a good sign. I didn't see any crushed red peppers that you normally see at most pizza places, instead they had "FOUR PEPPER BLEND and HATCH CHILI BLEND." Breadsticks: "Garlic, Herbs, Parmigiano Reggiano, EVOO." I only noticed the olive oil. I could not taste the garlic or herbs at all. The dough was very dense (not tough), which is not a bad thing. They were okay. Price: This is the biggest contradiction, the pizza was $22 and the breadsticks were $8 (4 pieces), so $31 in total. I could understand these prices inside of Portland, but the quality did not justify spending this much. This is a $11-$13 pizza at best. Parking: It's not their fault that parking is bad, it's really just the layout of the vicinity. If it's busy, you may struggle to find parking or be forced to park on the very steep hill. read more

I'm pretty picky when it comes to pizza. I can't stand thick breadstick like crust with half cooked toppings piled high which is what most places do. This is legit NY style. They are thin slices so don't feel bad when you eat 3. Friggin delicious. This is my new go to pizza joint. Wish they had garlic knots and/or zeppolis but the pizza is spot on legit. Service was great. Wait was reasonable. Heck they even had some cupcakes for dessert. The guava one is amazing. Treat yo self! read more

Simply put, Checkerboard Pizza, hands-down, makes the best pizza in the Gresham, Wood Village, Fairview, Troutdale area. It is on par with the best pizzas in Portland and Portland is a food town. Also, a shout out to the ice cream store next-door, which is owned by his wife. When you go there, you have to try the vanilla ice cream which they make themselves and it is pretty incredible. read more

When I went to Seattle for work, I found an incredible little pizza place called Big Mario's. Since then, I've been trying to find some pizza in Oregon that matches the quality and style. Good pizza terrible service. I love the tropical pizza. Unfortunately the service is and always has been unfriendly. After many times getting a slice of tropical, we were told they won't do it by the slice. We had to get a whole pizza. They were out of 12 inch dough so we had to do the 18 inch. Then we were told they would only do half tropical and either cheese or Pepperoni, no other pizza "matched". Very rude. read more

The food is soooo good. I'm very picky about genuinely good pizza. And this place HITS THE SPOT! It's perfect crispy and always tastes fresh. The only downside is that it's pretty expensive. The service from the cashier wasn't great but the chef/pizza maker was incredibly sweet. It's super cute out side too and a great place to go in the summer. They also have a great rotation of pizzas you can buy by the slice! read more

Great New York style pizza made with high quality ingredients. It's our go-to pizza cafe now even though it's a bit of a drive. Clint and his helpers always provide excellent service. We've had many pizzas from here and have never been disappointed. Nothing in Troutdale or Gresham even comes close. Definitely worth a try. Grab a beer at Wayfinder brew pub next door to go with the pizza. read more
