If you want Wisconsin Cheese, you've come to the right place. This mom and pop shop, run by an awesome and inviting mom and pop, will treat you to a nice tour of cheeses crafted with Wisconsin pride. Only one cheese was from out of state, and that was their Iowa Maytag Bleu; their "one import," they joked. Still, there were a variety of cheeses to enjoy, most of which could be sampled. They also offer smoked salmon, sandwiches, and apparently a baller pea soup. We know this because another customer rolled in for some after calling ahead... for what was apparently the second day in a row. This little cheese bar that could, certainly does. By the time we left with our dairy treasures we barely made a dent in what they had to offer. We'll be back for sure. read more

The store is a hole in the wall, which can be a great sign of being a local spot and not touristy. The guy at the counter was very friendly, but the prices are way too high. We stopped in yesterday while in Lake Geneva. I saw it pop up on yelp and then we happened to drive by. I had to stop! There's ample parking right in front, so easy to pop on in real quick. The inside isn't very big, but they really pack in lots of stuff in there. The staff is so nice! They of course have a ton of assorted cheeses. They do have a variety of cheeses that they make. They also offer free samples but the place is pretty small so not much room to have more than a few people. The staff is very friendly and helpful and are always willing to educate you on the different cheeses. read more

I stayed at the Grand Spa resort while visiting Lake Geneva. We did a little beer and cheese tasting. Someone asked a question about where to get cheese and this place (cheese box) was recommended. Well, a day later this Chicago gal was on the search for New Glarus Beer to take back across the state boarder.... and who would have known.. the Cheese box was RIGHT next door to the liquor store we chose. The outside gives you small town home vibes... like off the movies. lol The staff inside was SUPER kind and welcoming. A very nice lady helped me pick out the BEST smoked Monterrey jack I've ever had. Kind of sad I only purchased a smaller block... AND they sell some New Glarus beer as well in the shop! two for one! It's not gold and diamond jewelry. You eat it. Then, your bowels bind up and you deliver deer nugget-sized balls of fecal matter to the toilet bowl. Like a liquor store, vape shop or coffee house, the ADDICTION QUOTIENT is high. Research shows cheese is addictive in a way similar to drugs because of a chemical called "casein," and can trigger the brain's opioid receptors. The only product at this store that's worth considering is it's brick butter--NOT brick cheese--butter. The name should be changed to BUTTER BOX. Cheese Box sounds like a divisive euphemism for female yeast infections. Spent $28 on 19oz of constipation-inducing dairy dalliances with no Lactaid in sight. Samples are prevalent elsewhere, but not here. It's not called The Lunch Box, so don't expect big samples for free. read more

This place is a hidden gem. Ordered delicious build-your-own sandwiches to-go (mine had turkey, swiss, and mayo on super fresh cranberry bread). Regretting only ordering one of their toffee fudge brownies, but looking forward to the brick of havarti and of cheddar cheese we picked up for later. Interesting little shop. They have a bunch of tasty treats inside, and you can go in and pick out what you want then call in the order for your sandwich and they'll bring it all out to you together. We got two sandwiches one with roast beef and braunschweiger, the other with turkey and roast beef. On both accounts they were solid components, but like pretty standard sandwiches. You pick your ingredients and they just make it up for you. They have a really good system for Covid though, limiting the amount of people in the store and you just call in your order and they bring it out to a table. read more

HELLO, I LOVED THIS PLACE. A friend of mine showed a group of us Chicago girls around the Fontana/Lake Geneva area recently, because she grew up in Wisconsin. A week before we hit the road, she sent us the sandwich menu from the Cheese Box, because we were going to place a pick-up order for our first day. Just from looking at the menu, I knew I'd love this spot! We arrived right around the time we said we would, and our sandwich boxes were cold and ready. I love how they packaged each box with a little sheet that checked off exactly what we ordered, so we could see that everything we asked for was indeed perfectly placed inside. As for the shop, it is adorable inside and out! There are tons of local cheeses and other foods to purchase, along with Wisconsin beer and souvenirs. On the counter is a plate with cheeses and sausage to sample! The staff is very sweet, too. This is a cute cheese shop about 5 minutes outside of the town of Lake Geneva. They have a great variety of cheeses, in addition to crackers, chips, condiments, beer and soft drinks. The staff were very friendly and eager to offer samples. They had many on display so it was hard to choose, but I decided on some smoked Gouda and a spicy mustard. I am a Lake Geneva native, who has recently returned after a 27 year absence. I can not tell you how delighted I was to see the historic Cheese Box still alive and kickin in its same timeless location. I went to have a box lunch on a friends recommendation, and I have to say that my expectations were far exceeded! Their smoked brisket bbq sandwich on a pretzel roll was good enough to smack the lone star straight outta the Texas sky. My husband asked me to pick up cheese curds as a souvenir since he didn't come with on our weekend. This store looks like a hole in the wall, but is a charming step in the past...the staff there was very helpful since I did not have a clue what to buy! They gave us recommendations on their personal favorites. They were all very welcoming and nice... even when my 85-year old Mom accidentally picked up the whole cup of samples and started eating it without using the toothpicks!!! OOPS LOL! The 8 oz beef summer sausage was excellent. I should've gotten the larger option! I haven't tried the horseradish Jack cheese or the Swiss smoky cheddar 1/2 lb blocks yet. We're currently working our way through the 2 cheese spreads; port wine & horseradish...recommended by the lady behind the counter & they are delicious. Wish they had a few more samples and knowledge of the cheeses, however, the people working the counter were very helpful and kind in explaining the cheeses. I passed through as were were only in Lake Geneva for the weekend. My only Complaint would be the place is so small and there is no where to move. The owners and staff were so friendly and accommodating! They helped me find the perfect cheese that I was looking for.
