Huge selection of books and nicely organized. It was clean and quiet, which is perfect for browsing. The lady at the reception greeted me cordially, as I entered. The prices were a bit high in my estimation. I miss the Cheever Books of old, with more accessibly priced books. But it did have many first editions and collectors books, which is big plus. Wonderful selection of quality used books in great shape. A really nice mix of popular and eclectic and niche titles. The books are all in really great shape, many with covers or in sleeves. This is a store to people who are looking to add to their own collection, as opposed to looking for a cheap stack of books that they will then get rid of (no judgment, both practices have their place). Some negative reviews have claimed poor customer treatment, but my experience was the opposite. I bought a really nice autographed copy of "Baa Baa Blacksheep" and also a memoir by Eisenhower's speechwriter (see "eclectic and niche" above). This copy had no price written in it and had a goodwill sticker on it. I asked the lady at the counter how much the book was, and she looked it over and expressed her horror that the old sticker had not been removed. So she gave me the book at no charge and we had a great conversation about a unique picture of JFK's motorcade in San Antonio on the wall. Just a really nice experience. read more

LOVED this place. Stumbled on this gem by accident while passing through town and boy I'm sure glad we stopped in. This place is a treasure trove for book lovers. I could have stayed all day looking for buried treasure; hopefully another time! This is an actual house that is filled to the brim with SO MANY BOOKS. The popular titles are still hard to keep in stock but but I still found a lot of great books to add to my collection. Pricing is very fair and reasonable based on market so if you are looking for "vintage looking" .50 - $1.00 old books just to decorate your house; well this is not the place. This is a place for someone that actually wants to purchase and read or collect books. I didn't get the name of the wonderful woman that was running the store while I was there but she was amazing!!!! She knows the inventory like the back of her hand and was so helpful and personable! I will definitely be returning when I visit San Antonio again. read more

You cannot take a single step without being within arm's length of a book here. Cheever Books smells like heaven. And heaven smells like old, musky books. When the store is empty, it is a veritable paradise to get lost in, especially if you just let your fingertips glide across the book spines, shelf after shelf, aisle after aisle. To be honest, I've yet to make a purchase here, but just being in the presence of all those books calms me down after running about all day. The clutter is forgivable because that clutter is comprised of books; However, when the store gets a little busier, it's easy to get a bit clumsy avoiding people and forgetting about the uneven flooring (I've nearly fallen a couple of times.) You are left completely alone and to your own devices. I... honestly don't even remember seeing anyone working there. Which means they're very well hidden, and they understand and respect the average introvert's desire to just be left alone. When I do have enough money, I plan to make a purchase. Deciding WHAT kind of book though, is going to be challenging as there's a book from every genre I'd like to purchase at Cheever Books. read more

They have a very good selection of used books and the lady working there was very friendly and helpful, and a delight to visit with. We looked at a lot of books and bought a few, we wanted to trade a bag of books and found out they don't take books in trade, and one guy can buy books but he wasn't there that day...if you want to sell some books...call ahead to see if he's available. This is a great area for used books, we found 3 in the immediate area, and if you are a bookworm....you know they're getting harder and harder to find. read more

This is a charming and stuffed-to-the-gills bookstore. It's best to browse here and not come looking for anything particular, methinks. Of course books are going to be jammed here and there at a store like this, but I found this one to have books woefully out of order, and facing many directions, including at a 90° angle, so you find yourself removing books to see what's in the second layer behind, and sometimes giving up because you're afraid to knock them all over. No matter, this is a wonderful store to browse, especially if you're looking for older books, and there are lots of happy surprises to be found. I'll definitely stop by my next time in San Antonio. read more

Impressive store. An incredible amount, and very well organized, packed into a small space, but still with comfortable corners to sit and read in. (Is it possible to have more corners than walls in a place?) lots of nice leather bound editions and first editions but all priced at value. They know what they have and you're unlikely to find a particular deal here. That said if you're looking for a good book, you're likely to find what you're looking for here. read more

I wanted to give this place the best review possible--it's interior is cozy and inviting, and when I walked in I was nothing less than delighted by the sight of book upon wonderful book. They have the complete set of Waverley novels! Leather bound this, leather bound that, and lighting that invites you to lean in closer as you browse the shelves--I couldn't wipe the smile off of my face. Then, I went to check out: Me: this place is so delightful! I've never been here before, and my goodness, I'm just so impressed! Old man cashier: *steely silence* Me: *handing him my credit card* here you go! Old man: *silence* *hands me back receipt.* Me: thanks! Old man: *silence* Me: alright, I hope you have a nice day! Old man: *silence* What a d-bag. He didn't welcome us into the store when we walked in, but I found the interior so captivating, I didn't notice. As we checked out, he was as cold as he could be. It made for an unpleasant ending to what otherwise was a nice visit. I'm not sure I'd visit this place again--customer service counts for much, and this place utterly lacked it. Cheever is my favorite used bookstore in San Antonio. It isn't large, but has very good fiction sections, lots of non-fiction and a lovely collection of rare stuff to admire and drool over. Their prices are reasonable and I always walk out of here with a book or two. Watch for the cat! read more

Don't think about going to this store if you have a pet. NOT PET FRIENDLY as the employee there does not know his facts about certain animals. Maybe he should read more with all the books in the store. Plenty of other great book stores around the area. Understandable if they don't want pets inside but post a VISIBLE sign where customers can see it before entering and also no need to go into your own facts about animals you know nothing about. Simply say nicely, we appreciate not having pets of any kind in here and most decent people will have no problem understanding. read more

I loved this bookstore! Being from the South Side of Chicago it reminded me a lot of my hometown bookstores in the Hyde Park Neighborhood. I love a bookstore you can just get lost in. Also they have a great Texana section that I really found fascinating. I would have given this place 5 stars but the employee or owner wasn't too talkative. This is exactly what I'm looking for when I walk into a used bookstore. Shelves near to bursting with books of every genre. The cashier is friendly and informative and you can tell without needing to ask that she shares your love of books. I've been to other used book shops in the area. They may as well have been relegated to the back corner of a Goodwill or other thrift shop. Not that I have anything against thrift shops! I've found great stuff in the ones I've visited. But when I walk into a used book store it's nice to know it's staffed by fellow bibliophiles! read more

This is not a Half Priced Bookstore kind of place. I'm doing genealogy work on my Texas relations 7 generations back and this place has a huge Texana section of rare and used books. I've search Houston, Dallas and San Antonio and have not seen this large a selection. Books floor to ceiling and NOT a place for toddlers! The art book selection is also amazing. Plan to spend some time and even grab an arm chair. The only thing missing is a cup of hot tea...oops, no food or drink allowed! read more

Though the selection here is excellent, the positive shopping experience is ruined by the unpleasant owner, who keeps a graphic photo of a bullet-riddled dead body hanging in the lobby as a "clever" way of dissuading shoplifters. He was also rude towards my wife, who dared to try and make a purchase with a debit card; if he'd have had a sign posted, we wouldn't have tried, which also would have saved the owner the trouble of having to flip out on us. Judging by the way he spoke to my wife, he seems to simply have a problem with women in general. There's a Half Price Books just down the block... Their selection isn't as great, but you'll save yourself a lot of grief. read more

On the suggestion of a friend, my wife and I went to Cheever Books. Let me start by saying that my wife is handicapped and in a wheelchair. The first thing we noticed was that there is no wheelchair ramp in the front of the building. It's an older building with a set of stairs up to the main entrance. We drove around the back, and noticed what looked like a ramp to the back door, but there was a big sign on the door that said "Not An Entrance". I parked, left my wife in the car, and went around the front and went inside. The store was dark, cluttered, and even if I could get my wife's wheelchair inside, there was no room to push her in it. The place had disorganized piles of books stacked along the sides of every aisle, if you could call them aisles, and very little walking room, let alone wheelchair room. There was only one other customer in the store, at least I assume it was a customer, she was standing off to the side looking through some books. There was one woman behind the counter. I began to ask about the ramp in the back. I stated that my wife was handicapped and in a wheelchair, and wanted to know if the ramp in the back was a wheelchair entrance. The woman behind the counter told me that it wasn't an entrance, and that their store is not wheelchair friendly. I promptly told her, in that case, you do not want my business. And I left. I have no idea what kind of a bookstore they actually are, but I can tell you one thing, with that kind of customer "service", I have no intention of ever going back there to find out. There are a lot of bookstores in San Antonio, and we frequent many of them, but Cheever won't be on that list. read more
