I got the opportunity to check out Chef Deon's while I was on the island and it was so good, my friend and I went back the next day! It's a quaint restaurant with a homey feeling. As I walked in I felt like I was dining in my Jamaican Uncle's living room. The menu and daily specials are written on a dry erase board as you walk in. My recommendations are the jerk chicken, oxtail, or curry goat. The food is delicious and authentic - it was one of the best meals I had on the island. Late post: I tried this restaurant back in June when I was on the island. The food was really good. I got the Jerk chicken. I wanted the Ox tail dinner but they had just run out. My friend got the last order, so I was still able to sample the Ox tails and they were excellent. The Jerk chicken was good but the Ox tails stole the show. Chef Deon's needs wait staff. The lady waiting on customers on Sunday, 9/21 shouldn't be allowed anywhere near customers. I ordered the clam chowder and sea bass. Neither of the dishes were fresh. The chowder was dated and salty. The sea bass had so many bones in the small filets I could not take a bit without pulling out many bones each time. It was frustrating to eat, and I was afraid I might choke off the bones so I gave up trying to eat it. The mashed potatoes and broccoli was cold. When I tried to tell the waitress about my concerns, she waved her hands as she walked away, and said she didn't have anything to do with it It's a hard pass for me. read more

When we told the owners of the B&B where we had dinner, they were shocked and commented that it is more of a locals place. That's the kind of place we look for! It is located at the VFW. The prices are fair, portions are very nice and the flavor and heat are the stars of the show! The jerk chicken was easily the most flavorful I've ever had. Great Caribbean food with a few soul food appetizers. Friendly staff including Chef Deon. Goat curry has a nice moderate heat to it and was tender while the jerk chicken was flavorful with a mild heat. Everyone who got a fish dish loved it. Overall a great experience and highly recommend. I came with family one evening for a quick take out order as we were all on the island together for a short period of time. Chef Deon's was accommodating for a large last minute take out order & my family loved it so much that we decided to come back the next evening for dine in. I was surprised that Chef Deon's was able to accommodate a party of 10 last minute on a Sunday for dine in (this can be difficult on the island). Two dishes did come out late, however the chef personally came out and brought additional mini plates for those 2 family members. The Dine in Experience : It was on the warmer if you were not by the AC. The food does take a while for larger dine in parties, but it is worth it (you can call ahead). There is a walk to bar in restaurant- cash only, but very reasonably priced. Music is by the bar- I was not there, but by word of mouth it's great & popular with locals. All are welcome. Personable opinion: Great spot in Oak Bluffs Area. Its's not only, the good food but all staff being so attentive that make this a great spot. Really disappointed. Food was sub par. We ordered the jerk wings ($12) and pork chop ($26). The wings were way too spicy and the pork chop was overly breaded and bland. One server for the entire restaurant who happened to be the person taking the orders. She did her best, but they need more people. Not a great experience. Deon is a great chef. I love what he does with his Conch Soups! His fries plantains are right up my ally, skin on! Jerked chicken is properly spiced! His rum cake is deadly in the best way. I wanted to like this restaurant. We saw the sign out front for Prime Rib. Called to ask if they had rare cuts. Was told yes so we ordered two dinners. Arrived at the designated time and the restaurant was empty and our dinner wasn't even started. I could see the kitchen from where I was standing . Two pieces of previously cooked meat was removed from the frig as was the potatoes and broccoli. He took the meat and dipped it into broth and then placed it in a styrofoam container lined with wax paper. Poured the hot broth over it and places a scoop of old mashed potatoes and the broccoli in. So disappointing. The wax paper was melted and the food was Luke warm. Two stars because the price was good. Never again. read more

I didn't have a good experience whatsoever. The place was stuffy and smelled damp. I think the carpet may have been the cause of that so those with allergies may have a difficult time in their. The ambiance was not a good feel either. I am so disappointed as I really wanted to like the place. The menu options were plenty, but the food was just not good. The spare ribs and jerk chicken and fried chicken was not prepared to my liking. It's like a make believe jerk/Caribbean place. They bake the food and put sauce on it and call it bar b q and jerk chicken. The fried chicken appeared to have been boiled in salt first, then battered and fried. It was a total mess and not edible. When we informed the order taker/hostess she was discourteous and didn't offer any succession. We left the full plates of food there and paid full price for it all. It was a total waste of money and time. Our tour driver recommended the place. We trusted that he knew what was good on the island. It was subpar. I should've known this when we walked in and had the whole place to ourselves. I wish it was a better experience for me, however I'm sharing how it went for my group so that you can save yourselves the trouble. If you decide to try it, good luck. read more

One of the Vineyard's best kept secrets, this low-key spot serves up delicious, perfectly seasoned food, thanks to Chef Deon Thomas, right next door to the friendly VFW bar, which is stocked up with regulars and run by Ms Tiffany. Chef Deon used to run several restaurants on the island but now focuses on summer catering. We were on our way to lunch on Oak Bluffs' crowded shore when the 'jerk chicken' sign grabbed our attention. The menu is varied but centers on West Indian comfort food. They even serve conch fritters -- the best you can get north of The Bahamas, in my opinion -- and the cooks hooked me up with homemade scotch bonnet pepper sauce. Not to worry if you don't like your food spicy hot. To us West Indians, food should be well SEASONED, and that has nothing to do with (also) making it piquant, if so desired. The jerk chicken was served mild, for example, but perfectly seasoned, and then we added pepper to our taste. We topped off the meal with rum cake and key lime pie -- both among the best I've ever had, after years living and traveling in the Caribbean and Miami and visiting the Florida Keys too. We were here during a slow week in early summer, but still, I have to underscore the ultra friendly welcome, plus the laid-back atmosphere and delicious food. Decor: Bric-a-brac, with plaques and wall signs honoring our veterans are interspersed with posters of Bob Marley and Miles Davis and a few photos taken with celeb visitors. After the manufactured sameness of other eateries on the island, this was a homey oasis. We try to make it to the Vineyard every summer, and we'll definitely be back to see what Chef Deon, originally from Jamaica and trained at several high-end spots in NY, is serving up. read more

As a black man, I am an unswerving supporter of businesses like Chef Deon's Kitchen. I wondered if I should write anything negative about this place but decided to do so because I want this place to do better and prosper. First problem: couldn't get through via phone because the mailbox was full or the number couldn't accommodate calls. I went to the restaurant, photographed the menu, took it back to my rental home and showed it to the 3 friends who chose entrees and sides to order. Second problem: I returned to the restaurant to place my order as telephone service was non existent. It took 25 minutes before I could place an order. When told that it would be at least an hour before the order would be ready, I left in a rage, vowing never to return. I can't comment on the food because I didn't have any. Service was deplorable. Monday 8/1/2022 may have been unusual, but this place should be able to do better with enhanced communication and effective planning. I went to another popular restaurant in an adjoining town and got my large order in 20 minutes. What a pity. read more

Our AirBnB was about a quarter mile from this VFW so we stopped by when we decided to walk back from Lola's after brunch. I ordered salmon over rice b/c jerk is too spicy for me but my lady ordered jerk chicken and went through it like General Grant went through Richmond. This was the other restaurant (besides Fat Ronnie's) that we went back to during our stay. I ordered a draft beer and hennessey and it was only $10! This is the resurrected Chef Dion's Kitchen! Dion Lewis, the acclaimed Caribbean Chef, previously had locations in Chilmark and on Circuit Avenue in Oak Bluffs. We were delighted to discover his kitchen in the VFW, a low key but functional location off New York Avenue. . We did takeout jerk chicken, BBQ ribs and curried goat dinners. All were excellent and tasty comfort foods--sides included red beans and rice, mac n cheese, broccoli, collards and plantains. They are not fancy and not hi tech--limited internet presence, no special takeout menu, no substitutions--but the meals are authentic, bountiful and very satisfying. read more

We enjoyed the jerk chicken and BBQ ribs, nicely spiced (jerk is fairly hot); generous portions; and reasonable prices. And then there was the rum cake! Knock your socks off.
